One of my all time favorite shows. There are two scenes from two episodes. They feature Sally Struthers and Carroll O'Connor, one when she had the miscarriage and the other during the flashback to the wedding. That was the father/daughter talk when Archie tells Gloria about how she thought she would love the summer camp but it turned out that she hated it and he brought her home because "you were my little girl and anything you wanted was okay by me." He was telling her in his own way that she's still his "little girl", that she's thinking she'll love marriage but that may not be the case. I'm almost 70 and I was my father's "little girl". Those scenes always make me cry. Apparently Carroll O'Connor was a father figure to Sally Struthers. A wonderful series and worthy of all the accolades it received.
That brought a tear to me eye~!!
@@Forgoneconclusion. I love the one-on-one scenes with Carroll O'Connor and Sally Struthers. I seem to identify with those moments. I encourage all fans of this fabulous series to watch the episodes I mentioned. You will see the range of Carroll O'Connor's dramatic and comedic skills. Such a versatile actor. There is also a youtube posting of the last interview with him and Jean Stapleton on the Donny & Marie show.
@@lovesmusic36 Comedy is not like that now...
@@Forgoneconclusion. You are absolutely correct! Most if not all of the writers from that era are no longer here. In my opinion, it all comes down to taking pride in their work, not only the writers but also the actors.
I love that
Jean Stapleton is in my top ten list of actors I've had the pleasure of working with on the stage. She was genuine, smart, funny, and when she went off book she could spin a serious amount of BS to get her back on it and no one (the audience) would ever know the difference. She was one class act and continues to be through her work as Edith.
I am 63 years old now and I remember this show. The one thing I liked about this particular show is that it got people talking about issues of the day and it also let people see just how stupid racism and bigotry really are. I think it opened some people's eyes and made them do some serious soul searching. Carroll O'Conner did America a great service by taking the role of Archie Bunker. I think some people might have even seen the stupidity of their own actions. Just my opinion.
I agree it made Archie look like an idiot most of the time
Patricia Santillanes Well said and couldn’t agree more, was a risky show of the time . Don’t forget also of the “Women’s rights” to speak out against violence against them. We saw a empathetic Archie towards Edith
in my dad who is 63 almost he loved the racism in it and still does he has grown up in that way and that is how he was taught to look at views
Carroll O'Conner was on the blacklist as a commie for years.
A fine opinion indeed
As a 24-year-old man who was introduced to this show by my dad I'm proud to say not only is it my favorite show of all time it is also the greatest show of all time. You know a show is beyond great when even its countless spin offs were great and iconic. Thank God for Norman the genius Lear.
One of the greatest shows ever. Lessons still relevant.
I met Carroll O'Connor when he was shooting "In the Heat of the Night" He and a lot of the crew would come into my restaurant after work and sit and unwind. He was truly a nice man. He was on a restricted diet at the time and really couldn't eat much that we served. He wanted to just hang out with his coworkers and have a few laughs. Bubba was really nice too.
I once saw him on EWTN being interviewed by Raymond Arroyo.
Nice!
Why Carroll was cast as the lead character in a serious police drama was beyond me. With all his comedic talent,,, just seemed odd. my .02
@@danielhucklebridge5006 He was an actor and the scripts were comedic... He was not a comedian... In fact he was a professor at a college too
I loved the guys on the show! Bubba Jamison and Parker together was awesome!
I still watch this show and no matter how many times I watch it I crack up everytime.
One of the best shows ever on TV
Sammy and Archie's kiss, the look on his face!
Archie: I know you can't help being colored but what the hell ever made you become a Jew?
My absolute favorite scene in my absolute favorite episode!
@Lawrence Rodriguez; I forgot about that one or should I say a 2- parter, I thank you !
Fact 11- Archie was the first person to flush the terlit on live TV.
The kiss with Sammy was the first male/male inter racial kiss, or something like that. I remember it being on the news at the time some people flipped out, and others pointed out that Kirk kissed Uhura on Star Trek (first inter racial kiss on TV) but society didn"t have a problem with that because Kirk was under Alien control. lol I guess you had to be an Alien to want a black woman back then.
All in the family wasn't a live show.
What a loud terlit it was!!!
@Matt Beeman HaHa! Have you never heard of I Love Lucy? It was a 1950's show filmed before a live studio audience. It was the first multi-camera TV show filmed before a live studio audience. How old are you?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I still love that show
The show wouldn't been the same without Carrol O Connor & Jean Stapleton
That's for sure Janada! 😆
I watched it every week. Great show.
This show could never be done today.
Too much PC BS, now!!!
Long live all in the family! Norman Lear was a freaking genius! Can you say back and watch these episodes and not laugh your ass off. You can watch them again and again and again and always find something different that you didn’t see the first time. I do have to say that the Sammy Davis Junior episode was a freaking classic. Back in the day nobody thought twice about how rude a joke was or how it was going to offend somebody if it was funny it was just plain funny and they used it. Anyway it is too bad that you cannot find great TV like this anymore. Everybody take care, take it easy and be safe out there. Thanks for posting the video it was awesome
I always got a laugh out of Archie's facial expressions
And those times Edith was babbling on and on, and he’d pretend to “off” himself!
He was great at physical comedy like that time he got trapped in the basement and another time when he camped out in the kitchen with the cockroach.
He "borrowed"a lot from Jackie Gleason.
@@garylobo348 no doubt..
He only took a small bit of Gleason, he mainly liked to use alot of James Cagney the most. He was good friends with James.
I'm 54 years old and it's 2022 now and I still watch this show. It really makes me feel young again, makes me laugh, and takes my mind off things that are happening today. A lot of the issues back then are the same issues as today but it's presented in a comical way. To my suprise I didn't know Jean Stapleton turned down a part in willy Wonker and the Chocolate factory. All in the family is my favorate show for lifetime
They all fit the cast and i always felt like they were a real family even the neighbors and friends, all perfect combinations 💜🌹❤️ . The thing that surprised me most was sally and carroll going to court i never heard that beforehand.
I always watched the show( next to I love Lucy)
All in the family was always good for laughs and hugs and arguments just very well written for that time era. I still cant get enough of it today! 😂
All in the Family was one of the best shows of all time, along with M.A.S.H.!
I LOVE All in the Family!! Archie was my favorite because he and my grandfather are so much alike. Look alike, talked alike, likes and dislike were the same...lol
I feel the same way with Al Swearegin in Deadwood. So I definitely get it.
I feel the same with Quint and me favourite uncle.. even their laughs were alike.
I was always a fan because Edit was just like my mom and Archive was just like my dad. Funny thing was when I was a teen ager and started dating my now husband my dad never called him by his name Joe he always called him Yoyo until the day my dad died. Always reminder dedicated me of the way Archive would call Mike Meathead. So I can totally relate to all the characters.
@@wcjasmine Archie was never a true "racist" in my mind. He was just uncultured and uneducated.
@@wcjasmine When Archie finally did call Mike by his name, it was precious and revealed he really had loved him all the time.
Those were the days when we all had a good laugh without picking an argument over every single thing, those days are forever gone
"Those were the days" literally, with all of the unforgettable and strong views of our American family. Stay safe everyone!
I'm one of the biggest fans of All in the Family, it never gets old... My brother and I still quote Archie's stuff and we're in our fifties...
My favorite show of all time. The four actors have a magic chemistry about them. I simply adore Edith. Can’t imagine anyone else playing any of their parts.
Everyone was cast very well.
Sally Struthers is very underrated as an actress. They let her have lead part in a couple of shows and she was outstanding.
I agree. She was a great actress. MUCH better than the first Gloria who was God awful.
I know this show was VERY popular with Black Americans back in the day. Archie was bigoted, but he was just ignorant, not evil.
He believed everything he heard.
George was also just as much a bigot..Let's not forget that either
George Jefferson proved that blacks can be just as prejudiced as whites.
@@garymattscheck9066 I loved it when Archie & George had scenes together. Wish they would've had more together they were truly hilarious, the banter back & forth very well written
@@jcbulldog533 That's true.
That's funny that Mickey Rooney was offended, when he played an Asian man in Breakfast At Tiffany's. :p
He later said he regretted the latter, though.
Mr. Nobody that guy was an arrogant spoiled POS
1st thing I thought of.
And you knew who you were then " GIRLS WERE GIRLS " and "MEN WERE MEN" "THOSE WERE THE DAYS"👌✌😎🇷🇺
These days, that theme is practically an anthem for me. I have ZERO clue what's going on in the world.
There is a clip of a skit the cast did , and they ALL sang a new version of the song, "These ARE the Days." It's hilarious!

@@frankpaya690 There are 2.
I still love to watch all in the family! U watch them for so long, u feel attached to the characters, sorta as family
The salary dispute that Carroll O'Connor battled occurred right before Season 5, not Season 3. Episodes from that season were shown out of order of being filmed to accommodate the dispute. In fact, there were 4 episodes from that season that O'Connor was absent from due to the contract dispute: "Where's Archie?", "Archie is Missing", "The Longest Kiss (when Archie returns at the end of the episode)" and "Mike's Friend". These episodes were filmed early but shown in the middle of Season 5.
I was born in late 71 I remember growing up with my mom watching this and thinking it sucked now as an adult I see what genius it was
This was one of the BEST programs I have watched!! I am 72 years old!!!
there will never be a great show like this ever again! we watch them over and over .
People are way too overly sensitive, whiny and PC today. Plus great tv writers don't exist anymore.
@@trawlins396 Sadly, those that do exist seldom get their chance.
That was one of my favorite sitcoms back then in the 70's and the spinoff the jeffersons..... and Sammy's kiss took the cake... even the home fans like me laughed forever it was so funny that look on Archie's face...
The show with Sammy Davis JR was magnificent.....
Carroll O’Connor (Archie Bunker) won 2 NAACP awards in real life. His personality couldn’t have been more different than the character he played.
also in "real life" Archie (Carroll O'Connor) was a Democrat and pretty much what we call today a "progressive" liberal.
THE BEST SHOW IN THE HISTORY OF TELEVISION.
I’m in my thirties and I bought the box set at Walmart for 50 bucks a while back, popped a DVD in last night after a particularly crappy day and laughed my ass off, however it’s spooky how relevant it still is and how little some things have changed like the episode where Archie defends guns.
Sorry, Star Trek holds that rank as no. 1 but All in the Family is definitely #2
MysticBlue 02 Guns are good.
I will amend that to best in commercial television. "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" was best though an entirely different audience.
Um.....no.@@kathymain578
I still love that show. Its funny because it hit every racial nerve and everyone still watched. Archie was one in a million, literally. Maybe because it touched everything and left no one out.
Yes although blacks were mostly his focal point he pretty much had something to say about EVERYONE SMH LoL
Well if you like All in The Family! What about Archie and his son in Heat of the Night! as Chief of Police, who married a black women on the city staff, So they fired him and he became head of the county police, Oh him and his wife moved in town then!
Marilyn Reyes I loved Archie Bunker, Jefferson’s, Maude, Golden Girls, Sanford & Son, etc, they were all classics, but nowadays Archie, Jefferson’s, Sanford & Sons would be redone as lukewarm pc or be too afraid to air. Archie generically insulted everybody, but he never used the N word or specific insults for various races from what I remember.
I wouldn't say Archie was one in a million, he was more like a million others, but Archie wasn't afraid to show it.
Constitutional Republic actually, he did use it a couple of times, although I don’t think he specifically called someone that.
I knew all of them except #10. I love this show and have a the DVD box set which shows the few minutes that got cut from every episode when shown of local TV stations. It wasn't just great writing and great comedy, their facial expressions were priceless!
One of the best shows to ever appear on television . Brilliant acting by all.💖 I still watch the reruns.
Glad you like the video! What other types of videos would you like to see?
And the two principal actors played parts that were so opposite of who they really were. That is absolutely genius acting to consistently play a character so unlike who you really are!!!
I remember the show well. I think the reason there was little to no blowback was that people realized that Archie was the butt of most of the humour.
Exactly. The show wasn't promoting his questionable ideas, he was pretty much being used as an example of what NOT to do and say.
Such a great show. Perfect casting of characters. RIP all who passed.
The Good old days laughter and the 70s
One thing is for sure about All in the Family that is Carroll O'Connor was born to play Archie Bunker and he was phenomenal at it. And Jean Stapleton played and incredible subservient Edith Bunker also. They said it was the fourth-ranked show highest-ranked show ever I would like to know what is top three were? Norman Lear shurgot all-in-the-family right , some of his best work ever!!!
Absolutely!!!
The reason it hits home for people of age is that you meet AND deal with people like this in real life.
The Strech Cunningham drama suprised me. Archie was always very fond of Strech and how funny he was. Would of been odd to see Archie gone. I still watch every night on freevee.
I just loved and enjoyed All in the Family, never get tired of watching it, it's takes you back in time like it should be nowadays, but it makes you forget about the days we have to endure, NOWADAYS. Also, if anyone knows, did Jean Stapleton pass away, recently? I hope not, Beautiful and Gracious Lady and Actor.
Luv the show still watching n 2020 I luv all the cast but Edith is my favorite
I enjoyed this show a lot too but I really enjoyed his role as Chief Gillespie in The Heat Of The Night. He was still kind of bigoted in that series but confronting that reality with his co-star Howard Rollins as Detective Tibbs was such an interesting dynamic. It ended up being one of my favorite TV series.
I think the prejudice was played in the beginning for a "softer" transition from his Archie Bunker role. When seeing him, one almost expected him to be Archie-like and, of course, he was not.
You can never replicate a show like this
I remember watching the Xmas episode regarding the draft dodger---wow! Such an incredible episode. But the thing that shocked me the most was when they are all eating dinner around the table and they get into a big argument about the Vietnam war. Then Archie yells that he didn't want to hear anything else about that "goddamn war!" I'm not sure if he went off script and said goddamn instead of damn, but I remember it vividly. From then on, that episode has been edited to death and he no longer says that. But in some edits, you can clearly see that he says it. He's red in the face and sweating like crazy. That was a major no-no back then!!
He said gd in another episode, but I can't remember which one. Edith even commented on it, "gd this and gd that". And of course used the initials. She only said damn one time in the entire series
TheHoffy59 It’s the episode called “We’re having a heat wave”
TheHoffy59 Mike was taunting Archie about Nixon and Watergate when Archie blew up and told him to shut up 🤬 it! That’s when Edith I told him that he shouldn’t speak like that.
Dwight R He was against the draft dodger, for he himself had served in World War II, and he was right about that. I mean, if the people had the choice they’d want to stay home. Not fighting in some war. But you have to do what you have to do. I mean if the people stayed home most of us would be literal lampshades right now.
@@TheHoffy59 I just saw that, recently!!
The Best 1/2 hr. of Comedy I enjoyed growing up in the 70's, Carroll O Conner made that show what it was supposed to be, can't get away with that these days.
Great show - Great commentary.
Thanks.
Before this show came along some of the sitcoms were so ridiculous. All In The Family was a breath of fresh air.
Much closer to how most people lived. Dads whose profession you seldom knew and moms who always smiled and had clean aprons (if any aprons) and children who finished their meals and actually came to dinner in clean clothes and had perfect manners. A little imperfection goes a long way to most people relating.
In an episode after Jimmy Carter won the Presidency, Archie in an argument with Meathead said "You're gonna get Reagan in '80!" The audience laughed hysterically, as if this was the most absurd thing in the world. Who got the last laugh.
Yes, and the conspirators gave the heads up to...Norman Lear?
Yeah it felt the same when people didn't think trump would win
Last laugh? Probably the Iranian govt who were paid by the Reagan campaign to keep the U.S. hostages longer than necessary so Reagan could announce their release at his inauguration.
@@douglaslally156 the hostages should not have even been there in the first place Smooth Move Jimmy he should have stuck to growing peanuts

I loved Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker, in All in the Family. Because he evolved right before America's eyes. And gate the world hope.🇺🇸
I to am 63 I remember watching All in the Family. My Dad wouldn't miss it. My Mom liked it too. It brings back memories of watching it with my family. It truly was a great show. I don't think it would even be considered for T.V today.
Thanks for watching!
beautiful! thank you, sir.
I don't care what anyone says the episodes where Archie clashed with Henry or George Jefferson were some of the best TV moments ever, the battle was cousin Maude was epic as well.
I find the best RUclips channel “Edith Bunker” to have many many full episodes to keep you laughing 😂
I use to watch this show on over air antenna tv in the early 2000s and enjoyed the show as a teen and still do. Just found out about Archies Place this past summer. Great video.

I saw Carroll O'Connor on a talk show in the 1970s....I was very surprised to learn he was a former high school English teacher!
I even loved this show as a kid!!! Watching ot now on Prime, like I've almost never seen it, before!!!
Loved the show!
My favorite fact is the tussle Carroll would get into with writers & codes of conduct. He was insistent on keeping themes he felt of social importance at the forefront (as you said in your intro), on occasion I read arguing long & hard for a less safe script for the episode. As teens WE LOVED THE SHOW. It stopped us cold whatever monkey biz we were up to (as would SNL 5 years later) to SIT & watch. AITF perfectly captured our parents, authority figures etc all brilliantly rolled into one. The show in a way helped us deal with the crust of racist patriarchy that sadly settled on all but one friends folks who gardened, camped & read extensively unlike my folks and the same with my peer’s parents. A god send for sure. We loved the Sammy smacker‼️😷
Wasn't Archie off camera flushing the commode before Gloria's wedding the longest laugh ever on the show? Pretty sure it was?
Most surprising fact ? Edith was able to sing in real life . 🎵🎼
Every time I hear the opening, I wonder how it must have grated on her nerves to "sing" like that when she was a trained singer and had sung opera.
Cool 😎 job thanks
I have it on dvd and whenever I need to watch some all in the family I go through all the seasons.

Facts Verse I enjoyed most sitcoms - Taxi, Newhart are a few. Thank you so much. You are providing me with a much needed laugh😁
Got lucky on Jean Stapleton ... I doubt the show would have worked without Edith being a really great character as the diplomat at the center of all the chaos from Archie and the kids. She also made Archie more likable. You saw Edith and you thought, "If Edith loves Archie that much, he can't be all bad."
You are 100 percent correct!
Loveeee this show!
The only fact that I wasn't aware of was the situation involving O'Connor wanting James Cromwell ( an excellent actor) off the show. I would think that O'Connor would support the talent of other actors.
I loved All in the Family!
I've heard a lot about it but never saw it. I now know more about it than I ever thought I would. I was five years old when it went off the air.
Very good
Don't have anything to add as far as facts, but all I can say is my favorite episode is "Battle Of The Month" where Mike & Gloria are arguing in the middle of the night in their bedroom and Archie has a glass pressed against the wall in him and Edith's room to listen in on the argument. The entire episode was funny from beginning to end! I never cracked up so hard before in my life, I had tears coming out of my eyes!
Loved the show. Growing up, I knew many Archie and Edith like people.
We're happy to know that you love the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?

Archie never said he was sorry but Carol would show he was wrong through his facial expressions.
I dont believe the show would have been the same without ANY of the 4 main stars.
FYI: Years later, Carroll O'Connor and Martin Balsam, from "Archie's Place", starred in a movie called "Justice for All".
Carroll O'Connor was in Justice for All. That was with Al Pacino, am I right?
@@HoldenNY22 I could be mistaken; however, I believe it was Carroll O'Connor & Martin Balsam in a movie with the same name. But, I concede I could have the title all f*cked up.
