I ordered a lefty RSS20L in Swift Blue last Thursday and after watching your video I am glad I did. It's supposed to be shipped by April 19th, and I am stoked to get it in my hands. Thanks again for the great video!
Bought this guitar a couple of months ago for 300 usd. The string height was sky high when I received it, but after a quick setup it is brilliant. The neck is perfectly smooth. I would say it even surpasses my American strat in playability. The only negative is that the Yamaha sets the bar, and makes it hard to justify buying expensive guitar 😜
My Revstar RS820 has been my number 1 for years now. For the money it's hard to beat the specs and quality. Feel like they're seriously slept on guitars. Great video and playing as always sir 👌
Sounds great, Shane! Nice playing!! Maybe let Yamaha know we lefties would be all in for a P90 version? 🔥🤠👍 Think you could check out the RSS20 stainless fret version? Thanks Sky Music!!
FWIW I have the Blue RSS20L its a lovely guitar. In my experience I don't like the push pull pot on mine, it feels a little fragile & theres a slight wobble on it. And the passive boost doesn't do much for me but others seem to like it. The neck is lovely and the fretwire is stainless so it should last a while! Everything Shane said about finish and build quality applies to mine too. Its probably my favourite guitar to play, although I typically prefer single coils so ... yes a P90 version would be the ultimate left handed revstar :)
Good review Shane! I like the unsofisticated shape and the sound. The routings for weight relief are well thought out to support the vibration in a certain way. Well done Yamaha!
Good to see the left handed version reviewed! I'm not really in the market for one but the GAS is strong. I'm going to guess that a bit of a set up would fix the tuning issues and what you are experiencing is the less then perfect set up provided by a right handed factory set up person. It's no surprise to me that "all" the left handed players I know are better at setting up their guitars than the local shops.
@@xb5883 It appears that YOU care. What's with the white knight reaction to the mere mention of a name? Chris is clearly associated with the Revstar (custom shop model) and is likewise a big fan of the new releases. I appreciated hearing and seeing how both Shane and Chris expressed themselves on these instruments.
I'm a leftie and looking for a new guitar. You know how difficult a move that is if you are left handed. I've been eyeing this for a while, your review really helps Shane. Many thanks.
I bought the black leftie today and m blown away by it. I’ve not encountered the tuning issues you mentioned and the playability is immense. It’s a steal at £399.
It would be great if, further into the product lifecycle, Yamaha released a version with a P90 in the Neck and a Humbucker in the Bridge (available in both lefty and righty of course).
Sounds really good. Nice playing. The G string keeps going out of tune is most likely a problem with the nut. This is a common problem with guitars where the strings don't go straight out to the tuners, where they go off at an angle, you have to file the tuner side of the string slot on the nut.
I have the original 320 it's a rock machine, plays great, sounds great, looks awesome! I was going to buy a LP as I used to own one but the 320 covers most of that territory. It doesn't sound like a LP but it covers rock tones really well. And, I only paid $200.00 USD on close out!
Revstars are very underrated, the build is quality, playability and tone is just there, and I mean right up there. Now you just have to give the P90 version a try, it will put another smile your face. No tuning issues with my Gen 1, 502T.
I can see one of these in my future. The model with the stainless frets. Pretty cool that they’re using Elixirs. That’s all I’ve been using for years now.
Shane’s high gain tone is on-point! Great review. As an SG fan, I would be all over this if it weren’t for that close positioning of the volume knob (which I don’t really like because of my rather aggressive strumming style).
MUCH BETTER than even Yamahas official demo on their own website. Thanks. Looks great but a shame about poor tune stability. Its tough to find an electric guitar for less than £/$600 that is ok without another £/€150 to be setup or repaired. My search continues...
Had the 502T (P90) for a few years now and would not let it go for quids. Tried all the new range and boy would I have a couple more if there was not so many other options in guitar land.. Nice review.. 👍🇦🇺
How you doing Shane, I've been really checking out all the reviews on these or the next one up , the standard and best reviews on all the sites. I'm getting one soon, thanks buddy. 🕊️
Loved your presentation! Even though I’ve just purchased the ‘righty’! I’ve been hankering after an electric for years! And this beautifully designed guitar caught my eye…love at first sight…and you’ve helped to confirm that! Thanks mate!
Should be placing my order tomorrow for a right handed one. Some Gotoh keystone locking tuners and all the electronics including the pickups are getting upgraded.I'm calling it the Deathstar. It'll have actual coilsplitting and retain the treble bleed. The beauty of it is I've got all the upgrade parts already and it's only a $500 dollar guitar! Should be a ripper!
"The chime and the Top End is Beautiful..." but it wouldn't be so without that Beautiful PLAYING you deftly graced us with though. Very, very nice indeed.
Great lightweight affordable electric guitar. Sounds good and plays well. I played one at the guitar shops and was impressed with both the price and playability. Great for gigs, however I am partial to my PRS SE Standard which I keep in the studio 🎙 because it's much heavier. The Yamaha is a great grab and go guitar available in 5 different colors 👌. As always, great video. Keep them coming....
Thanks for this, you convinced me I don't need a maple top and a bunch of electronics I don't particularly want and saved me $250. Now I just have to wait until October.
Yep, it's already in the release schedule. I also have a right-handed player helping out soon. He's going to do all the stuff I can't do as a lefty and he's a great guitarist :).
Totally agree about the tuning. Mine was the same. I added some nut sauce and allowed the strings to bed in a bit. Keeps in tune really well now. Shocked how great a guitar it is.
From what I’ve seen they sadly aren’t doing the lefty version with P90s. Other vids I’ve watched show the full range and they said that in them. Shame coz that’s the version that I wanted
It is reviews from folks I respect their opinion immensely on, and you are one of those, that made me go to great extents to get a Standard in Flash Green. NO ONE in the States has them in stock yet, even Yamaha's biggest dealer, Sweetwater. I had to have a friend up north buy one from a shop near him, then sell it to me. I think the Standard is the perfect bang for the buck level here. It is exactly the same as Pro level except without the 2 graphite rods around the bridge and no hard case. Same hardware, pickups, binding etc. The Flash Green with strips is just gorgeous, and I generally dislike green guitars. On my Standard, it is perfect, except the nut and the dime sized pots. I think it's cut too deep. Not a horrible amount, but could be better. Easy enough to rectify. Tuners worked fine, but I did drop some Grover Locking in just because I prefer locking tuners. The Pickups in the Standard and Pro, are just very very nice. For stock pickups they are amazing. They standup to some of my custom wounds Suffice it to say, Yamaha alleges they went through 100 different pickups/designs until these. And that might be it, that they are just perfectly matched for the guitar. I widh they had the High passs instead of the Focus. It boosts and cuts off the high end, like a tone roll-off, but not quite. Oh it's useable (Set an amp for light breakup, roll bridge back to edge, then engage, and oh mama).
I see very few youtubers mention the bigger body but none mention how the new bigger body feels good/bad too big ect. So how does the new body feel and does it cause any issues?
Great review Shane. I was quite impressed tones and output and versatility of the pick ups. And it looks really nice, I too really like the GT stripes in the center
Nice demo. I'm thinking of getting the Element. I had the earlier iteration of this Revstar but the reason I sold it was because it was too heavy and had no contours. I need a belly and arm cutaway to really feel comfortable with any guitar. I never had any tuning issues with my Revstar but I wasn't crazy about the Elixir strings that came stock. They were just too harsh in feel and tone. I prefer Ernie Ball or D'Addario, usually 9-42 or 10-46 XL.
Great video! I’m a leftie and just getting back into playing after a few years out. I want a guitar for about 500 max and have ordered an ESP LTD 256FM in cobalt blue to try. I mainly play punk pop but do dabble in the odd Metallica tune albeit just in the house! Any recommendations on guitars or is the one I’m trying a good shout?
I really want the P90 Standard in Hot Merlot, but my Sweetwater rep just told me they are backordered until 2023! I'm bummed...... Great review as always Shane! Thanks for what you do.
@@martinq1920 hi Martin, I am not sure about the specs on your Strats neck for comparison purposes, however can tell you this. I have an Ultra Strat and a LP Standard. The neck width of my Revstar is narrower that that of my Strat or LP at the nut, by quite a bit in relative terms. At the 12 fret they are all more or less the same width and at the 22nd fret the Revstar is Wider. In terms of depth, the ultra is much thinner than your neck i would presume. The Revstar sits comfortably in the middle between that of my LP and Strat. Def not as chunky as the LP. The matte finish on the Revstar makes the neck silky smooth and its very comfortable to play. I do not have the biggest hands and have no issues. Having said that, if you can I would recommend you try playing one before you buy to see if it works for you. Hope that gives you some insight.
@@martinq1920 another thing worth mentioning is the scale length of the Revstar (24 3/4") vs the Strat (25 1/2). The revstar has the same scale length as the LP. I know what you mean when it comes to the shape. Similar to you it grew on me very quickly. I wanted the burst at first but when i looked at them hanging side by side the Merlot just stood out. Happy hunting.
Have you ever considered doing some still shots with black guitars so you can get more control over your lighting and get some nice close up shots , where the detail of the instruments are shown . Light painting can be a creative way to light black hi gloss objects it's easy to do and effective. A picture paints a thousand words.
Great video Shane, really liked the intro jam. The Revstars seem to be great player's guitars. I was really tempted to buy one but i restrained myself since i already have two guitars with humbuckers 😀
SHANE.SHANE.SHANE.. I've been watching you demo and playing guitar for ever but I'm not even joking!!! That guitar made you sound 10 times better than ever and it looks awesome too.. Big thumbs up buddy👍
Man- I was just about to pull the trigger on one of these- and then you said the magic word- "intonation". That could be it just needing a good setup- like you said, which is more about where you buy it than the guitar itself, I guess. Or- it could be a thing- I guess I need to watch some more reviews. Yamaha doesn't score very big on the customer service portion of the test when you look at reviews online. I'm starting to lean back toward the Ibanez SP3 Kiko what's-his-name signature series. As you can tell, I'm not a Kiko fan really- I mean he's great and an amazing player but- I don't even know his last name- plays for Mega Death- it's a shredder. A super Strat- as they call it- which I've never owned before, but always wanted. I've got 2 Strats already- and the Epi LP- so if I had a Super Strat- I would kind of have it covered. You talked me into it- Super Strat it is- alrighty then- good talk. I'll probably be single Saturday after it arrives, but I'd rather have the guitar so- whatever. She'll go buy some more shoes and get over it- watch, I can't get rid of her.
Thanks, Shane. I had one of the previous Revstar series last year, an RS420, and it just didn't do anything for me. Allied with bad fret buzz I returned it. Aside from that, though, it was well made as expected from Yamaha.
I have one of these in the Surf Blue. It's a great guitar except for a couple of things. I'm not a fan of the 3 way switch they've used. I would have much preferred a Les Paul style switch. The other thing is the lack of individual volume controls for each pickup. I know these might be nitpicks, but initially I thought this was a great guitar. However, now the more I think about it the more I'm starting to lose my enthusiasm. I might look into modifying it or just maybe as time goes on I might adjust to it.
Hi Shane. Do you still publish Pod Casts? If so where can I find them. The last one I see on Apple Podcasts is from 15 March 2021 titled The best and worst music gear of 2021.
A silly question from someone new to electric guitar (me): how do you adjust the neck of the Revstar and the other set-neck guitars with no truss rod if they bend overtime? Or do you just pray the neck doesn't bend and only adjust the action via bridge/saddle?
This is a very nice looking guitar. The only improvement (other than the Gibsonesque G string problem) I'd make is to use the logo as inlay. It would add a little splash. Otherwise, it's a Yamaha. Of course it's awesome!
Yeah you got one.I'm writting this before i watched so lets see what you think. I got the RS20SL. it has Bar inlays but sound very simlilar. As far as i have been able to gather their are different Caps used under the bonnet. Do you think you'll be investing in one? If you can Shane the next model up's a bit more expensiv but they are a nicer looking Guitar simply because of the Bar inlays. The pull/push knob i found was very suttle but the change can be heard. I'm glad i bought mine. I would have liked the older Yamaha SG but they are hard to find in a left hand configuration and way over 2 grand. I knew you'd try a Revstar, their the first time they have been made for Southpaws. Thanks Shane, take care mate.
@@intheblues Awesome. Tonally, does it have that thick, mid forward Les Paul vibe? My very specific situation is, do you think it's worth selling my Gibson Les Paul studio to get the Standard (the model one up)?
I had a Revstar P90's which was very well built, a bit on the heavy side and the pickups on single notes sounded great. However chords didn't sound good as the overtones didn't sound musical - don't know the cause. Changed to a Les Paul special and although the pickups were darker chords sounded right!
Great review as usual mate...l was really only interested in the p90 version, but the Alnico Vs sounded good... That Artist Tweed seems pretty versatile too Shane, nice cleans & barks when you want it to... Anyone know how much & they'll keep up with a drummer?
I used the Tweed Tone 20 live all of the time. It's good up till about moderately loud. Due to the cabinet size, it's a bigger sound than a Blues Junior.
@@intheblues lve got the Supro BK12 15w.. the cleans are ok, but not sparkly like ld expect from a class A with 6L6...& it really needs cranking to drive (it doesn't get louder, just fizzier) I'll have a look at the Artist..l was trying to get a Bugera v22, but can't find one anywhere. Thanks for your work Shane, l enjoy the channel.
Thanks Shane, looks and sounds like a really great affordable and versatile alternative to a Les Paul/SG. Regarding the tuning instability, that might be that the strings just needed a good stretch. I restringed an acoustic today and tuning was a nightmare until I remembered to stretch the new strings out... all perfect now!
I've always wanted to give the Revstar a go... but never have. Love the Shape/Look of these. Sound Great in your hands too Shane... and this is the Base model?
A minor gripe is that they don't seem to release many (any) 24 fret instruments these days. Not a deal-breaker but I do like the 2 extra.....and I think this would roar with some hot P90s in!

I love it, mine is the yellow and it has Dylan Talks Tone p/u's. Loved this video.
I’m looking at one of these (P90 Standard) Shane please review the Standard next. Please and Thank You!
Wow great guitar
Sustain was awesome
And Shane was great as usual
I have a Revstar...ive never had an issue with the tuners
If ordered now, get it by the end of 2022! yippee! I was going to order a Standard, but...
Beautiful guitar, great sounding amp, by the way. Cheers
Would be nice to know what the woods are.
that guitar sounds like you should own it . what a great blues rock guitar
Would like to see you review the Godin Radium Winchester brown rn. I call it a Telecaster on steroids.
A good rival to Epiphone LP/SGs and a better soundscape than on the Yamaha website. Nice..
Very cool, as always.
I planned on the red but this black version is stunning... er! lol. Question is get this model or the standard. Thanks Shane!
Well done Lefty! I’ve inquired about better colour choices for us lefty’s 😔
👍👍👍👍
im definitely getting this in vintage white
Thanks, Shane. I had one of the previous Revstar series last year, an RS420, and it just didn't do anything for me. Allied with bad fret buzz I returned it. Aside from that, though, it was well made as expected from Yamaha.
i only have a telecaster now with stock pickups. looking for a humbucker guitar and have my eye on this yamaha
Whoops, nvm! I just found out the Revstar still has a truss rod!
Found extremely bright! But it might be the amp setting cause heard on other reviews that it sounded very warm 🤔
Great review, thanks Shane. How does it compare to a Les Paul?
Which Les Paul in particular? It's every bit as good or better than most Epiphone Les Paul guitars at the higher end of their series.
@@intheblues Awesome. Tonally, does it have that thick, mid forward Les Paul vibe? My very specific situation is, do you think it's worth selling my Gibson Les Paul studio to get the Standard (the model one up)?
Great playing but I think you've missed the focus switch on the first knob or am I wrong with the version ?
Shane you always sound great doesn't matter what you play
Thanks for the kind words, Bill. You only hear the track I end up keeping though 🤣
I had a Revstar P90's which was very well built, a bit on the heavy side and the pickups on single notes sounded great. However chords didn't sound good as the overtones didn't sound musical - don't know the cause. Changed to a Les Paul special and although the pickups were darker chords sounded right!
That black is just Badass. Got 1 comin from Sweetwater next week.
These are the lovechild of PRS & Gibson
That sounds like a very versatile instrument . All the best of for Tele and less Paul style
Looking for a lightweight HB guitar.....this seems like a great possibility
I've always wanted to give the Revstar a go... but never have.
Love the Shape/Look of these.
Sound Great in your hands too Shane... and this is the Base model?
Is it heavy? Have not seen the weight around. Thanks
A minor gripe is that they don't seem to release many (any) 24 fret instruments these days. Not a deal-breaker but I do like the 2 extra.....and I think this would roar with some hot P90s in!
Shane, can you comment on the width of the guitar(lower bout)? It looks wider than a Les Paul.
I am impressed. Nice axe ! Do you know if they make a Semi-hollow ? Thanks for the video Shane. Tell Sky Music I said thanks. Blues On....💙
Shame that Yamaha seems to have discontinued the old SG 2000 range.
Shane, you make that guitar sound great.
