    Hello from North Carolina John! I’m a fairly new fan of yours but I really enjoy watching your videos and learning about your influences.
    I think you made the right decision. The Epiphone is a great guitar but there is something special about the sound of the Revstar, and it is a gorgeous guitar.

    In the demo you couldn't get a gnats chuff between them. Good final choice John and sound reasoning. I am a lefty and pleased that finally Yamaha are doing the Revstar in lefty. Having said that I have a Gibson 61 SG coming tomorrow. When the coffers build up again I'll be Revstar shopping. Great channel 👍

      I’m a lefty also and was looking at the 61 SG for a while. I decided to go with a black Revstar standard. Happy so far, only downside vs an SG in my opinion is the weight, mine is about 3.8kg.

    Hi John nicely put ..you did a bit of a X factor Simon Cowell nominating the Revstar but making us all think it was gonna be the SG.. Which I had an inkling it could be after ur glowing review .. which is great cos I'm picking up my revstar standard P90 in about a weeks time .. I too read all the reviews & was blown away with the uniqueness of the guitar & the looks.. cheers Baz

    What really lets that epiphone down for me is the veneered front - which just highlights what it isn't. The Yamaha is as honest as you get, I'm going to get a revstar with P90's when one comes available. Good video John, thanks for making it.

    I tried a friend's Revstar which was a few years old and I think it equates to the current mid range one. Fantastic guitar so not surprised you went for the Revstar. I get your reasoning about the guitar's identity but I'm a bit sad and I like playing the music of my heroe's with guitars similar to theirs. So any AC/DC is left to my Harley Benton DC Custom....Knopfler stuff is covered by my Strat like red Vintage V6 and so on. I know I need to try and get out more!

  • @el0blaino

    John, smoking playing, and great choice! In my own way I did something quite similar ...
    Earlier this year I was ready for a second guitar. I had been dreaming of a cherry-red SG for several years because of Cream and George Harrison and my not having large hands, so once I got some money saved, off to the guitar shop I went. I sat down and played one, thinking it would be kind of a formality. It became two, three, four, five different SGs, Gibson and Epiphone: I just couldn't get on with it! I was so crushed! It sounded fine, but just didn't feel right in my hands- the neck dive, but also playing it, and there was something off about the fretboard on the Epiphones I played.
    Totally dejected, but with that money burning a hole in my pocket, I started playing other things and ended up falling in love with a Yamaha -- not the Revstar, which I had been hoping to try but they didn't have in, but a used Yamaha "SA," a semi-hollowbody ES style that has been discontinued. The neck played like it was made for me, it is balanced beautifully, ... I just love it. Even though I had a good image of Yamaha as a brand, I never thought of myself as playing an ES style - it was just born from desperation when the SG experience didn't live up to my dreams.
    Coda of sorts to the story: a couple months ago I finally got to try a Revstar: now I am in danger, because I no more need another guitar than I need a hole in my backyard, but it sure played wonderfully ... maybe in a couple of years ...???

    Despite the glowing review, I wasn't sure you would choose the Revstar in the SG shootout, so it was a bit of a cliffhanger for me. I'd leap at buying that red Revstar Element, it's pretty and very affordable in Canada, but luckily for my budget my GAS is sufficiently soothed by the dulcet tones of my P90 and Strat single coil guitars.

      Epiphone isn't a copy either so you point is what? This channel is loaded with inexperienced guitar players who like the flavor of the day..the Yamaha Revstar isn't even slightly close to the quality of a Gibson or Epiphone period

    • @simonfenn3791
      @simonfenn3791 2 года назад +1

      @@mr.astrophysics9115 Sorry if you misunderstood me. I love Epiphone, a company which outdates Gibson. However the SG was only introduced into Epiphone's line up in the late eighties under licence from Gibson. That's why I would call it a copy of the original.
      Gibsons are way out of my price range so I prefer Epi's.
      Yamaha Revstar's are in their second iteration and have their own lineage from the original brand. I hope this clears things up from an inexperienced player.

    I have a Japanese Revstar - the one commonly referred to as the Rusty Rat. I also used to own a standard SG. There quite similar but very different. The Revstar is impeccably well made. No neck dive. Really versatile as it can via the dry cut make it sound like a tele on steroids or give you full on LP humbucker tones. The Revstar is top class in every way. SG’s are cool but unless you have very deep pockets it’s hard to find a great one. You made the right choice - congrats 👍👍

    • @Nautijan
      @Nautijan Год назад

      How do they compare when standing, specifically the position of the neck. With a SG the neck is positioned more to the left which helps me a lot with access higher up the neck given the fact I am tall.

    • @froblivion8284
      @froblivion8284 Год назад

      @@Nautijan no real difference when standing & easily sorted with a wide strap. It comes down to personal preferences but the Rev imo has more character - nice snarl to the pups. The fit & finish is close to perfect & really flexible sound options. The SG is a classic - not knocking it but the Rev for me is just that much better. Good luck 👍

      @@Nautijan perhaps I misunderstood your question. I assumed you’re referring to neck dive with the SG. As for moving the neck ‘more to the left’ that honestly makes no sense to me at all. Can’t help you. Suggest you try both if you can & buy whichever you prefer. I’m very happy with the Rev - I’ve had more guitars than I can remember over the years - custom strats - LP’s - Musicman etc & the Rev for the money is as good if not better than most - except perhaps my CS 61 & PRS Custom 24. Good luck.

    Tone-wise, the Epiphone gave the stereotypical SG sound, where the Yamaha had a tone of its own. That would have sold me on the Yamaha. Some people need to recreate a particular tone so the Epiphone might suit then better.
    But the most important thing for me, and the hardest to demonstrate in a review, is how it plays, how it feels. That seems to be what really won you over

    Sorry John, bad choice as far as I'm concerned. But it's your money, so it's up to you of course.
    Can't beat an SG....fantastic guitars!

    Excellent comparison, but as a general comment, and not wanting to get get too heavy politically -wise. For many, my self included, china and asian produced guitars are the only affordable option. But with regards to china, should we start to think about the morals of supporting such a regime? Especially as china is going to be the next biggest threat after Russia...

    Before you choose, keep the one that doesn't have a self removing headstock! 😂

    The very first thing that strikes you about the 'Revstar' is that it's an ugly shape...

      I think your comment is in the minority but as they say...Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    This is an easy choice. Epiphone quality has been going downhill for years. Gibson should spend more money on luthiers and less on lawyers.
