    Congratulations, John. A guitar is a tool, but if using it gives you an extra measure of joy, then it becomes much more than a tool. It becomes a treasure.

    Congrats on your decision. I found a shop in Paris that had examples of all three models of the Revstar. I must admit the neck of the one I played felt really nice and the finishes were great. But there is something about a Les Paul so glad you are happy with your choice.

      I just got a standard. Did you notice any difference between that and the pro? I think my standard is well made enough where I can't see how much better it could be for $1200 more.

    UPDATE: I played my new Tribute for the first time today (October 13, 2022). So far I have only plugged it into my little Roland Cube Street amp, on "classic stack" setting with gain at 9 o'clock. The playability and tone of this guitar is beyond my wildest dreams and expectations. The frets are perfect. Best humbucker guitar I've ever owned (and I've owned many, including LP Standards and Customs, SGs, Gretches, and Japanese made Yamahas). I played for 2 hours non-stop with plenty of bending and never had to retune a single string. I am blown away. Sometimes you just luck out and get a truly great guitar. I know this will be a forever keeper with no mods..

    Fair play for choosing the LP. Personally I doubt I’ll ever buy another LP as I had that exact model and the thing couldn’t hold tune. And it’s a grand! Hope yours is better!

    I played a Gibson Les Paul Tribute a couple days ago, and it was incredible. I had never even touched anything Gibson prior to that because of the price, but this is something I am strongly considering saving for. Everything just felt so great while I was playing.

    Ha, I confess I was expecting you to keep the revstar and then end up getting an LP again, but I would have done the same as you. Ive been looking a lot at those tributes. I wish they still did a 335 tribute/studio and then Id buy in a shot.

    I could tell John was upset that the Revstar pretty much matched the Tribute in every way, even to the point of a quick tweak on EQ and it's the same sound. However, I am so glad he was able to finally fulfill a dream thanks to all his hard work. I agree about this issue of Revstars being "instant classics" and makes me think my birthday is coming up in October and I don't have a black guitar....hmmmm....

    The right choice I reckon John. If I was in the market for a £400 guitar, I would put the Yamaha high on my list, but if I could afford the Gibson, I would go for it. I agree that it sounds fuller and brighter. The mid-range P90 Revstar sounds really nice, and is within my price range (just)..hmmm?

    • @tomwhittaker9461

      You can always change the pickups, some pickup sets are under 100 €, and get the pickup sound you want, instead of wasting over 1000 additional € for the Gibson brand name. The Gibson is also much heavier and more cumbersome.

  • @tramlad2

    Keep the Revstar, it is stunning, Les Pauls to me are overpriced and not always the best build quality, as you said before the LP is a notch above a decent Epiphone, the Yamaha is so well built, and it is stunning value for money, and i would keep the Yamaha

  • @dpajc056

    I haven’t played a revstar as the Yamaha dealer network is poor to say it gently, but I’ve played and owned Gibson Les Paul’s and they’re simply amazing. In my opinion after the Strat, it’s the second best guitar ever made. Anyone saying otherwise about the Les Paul is a hater or too broke to buy one. The heritage alone is legendary, but to me nothing sounds better than a LP. I don’t like it either, I wish that a cheaper guitar could satisfy me, but in the end the LP is the only guitar that’s unbeatable. Any Gibson will not disappoint even the cheapest ones. They’re all made in USA in the same factory. It’s not a logo envy, they are truly great. Not like fender that makes guitars all over the world. I think the revstar looks amazing and I like the SS frets and the slim body like the Les Paul special but man they’re so hard to find!! Once I test one out if it’s great I would buy one. Only the Gibsons are nitro finish and nobody makes guitars better than the Yanks sadly, not even the Japs.

    I think that you made the right decision John. As much as I wanted to favor the Yamaha, I preferred the tone and look of the Les Paul. There's a slightly honky sound in the Yamaha that isn't there in the Gibson. But I still think that the Yamaha would be a great choice for anyone who simply can't, or doesn't want to shell out more money, but still wants a quality guitar, the Yamaha certainly is a quality guitar.

    Hi John, I got my first guitar back in 1969. I won't say I've been playing all that time, for the first few years I only knew four chords and that was about it. It wasn't until secondary school that I made a friend who also played a chord or two so of course we formed a little band and then both tried to play better than the other and I really started to practice in a big way. In the end I made my living playing in a country music band so a Fender guitar was always the best option. In all those years I've never owned a Les Paul, not even a copy. Now music is just for fun posting the odd tune here on YT that an itch that really must get scratched. I've been looking at the Harley Benton with the P90s on it. Have you ever tried one? BTW I played many a gig hauling the gear up a huge flight of stairs in the working men's clubs in your neck of the woods. Don't you just love the bingo!!!!!

      Ooooh that's a difficult one! I love the non-bound guitar...and I love the bound guitars! To me it depends on the colour/finish, how it looks "in the moment". As others have commented here, to me it's a choice from the heart!

    Well, as an owner of both a Les Paul (2008 goldtop) and a Revstar (502/P90s) I would not have made your choice. HOWEVER, it illustrates a growing frustration I have with guitar-review-videos, which dwell in Great Depth on the technical this and that. For all the neck radii measurements, pick up resistance readings, and observed finish blemishes, the bottom line is if it feels good then it probably is good. On that basis John, you clearly made the right choice. We have too many choices in this day and age, and it gets in the way of having a good time.

    I'm a bit late to this party, but agree with the choice you made, John. T?he Yamaha is lovely and an amazing value for the price. However, to my ear, it lacks the character of the Tribute. And there's just something about a Gibson Les Paul, even this so-called "entry level." Sounds every bit as good as any Standard I've ever heard. I think that the Gibson will hold its value better than the Yamaha. Great that you followed your heart, but I think that Gibson is the "smart choice," as well. Congratulations on treating yourself!

    Splurge and keep both. I got an LTD EC400 in 06 better in almost every way than Epi LPs slim neck for me xtra jumbo easier bend frets cutaway neck joint but I missed the traditional 4 knob pickplate and lower horn classic LP style, timeless. Even though the neck isnt as good i had to get a 21 Epi 60s std in exclusive Sweetwater smokehouse burst. They are similar but both great enough to keep bc of the differences.

    I understand that you have kept the LP deciding with your heart, but I do not understand how you have not returned it so that they send you a perfectly built one. I own several HBs to which I have had to make some adjustments, I have even been kept with small aesthetic defects, but each of them will cost at most €200, and I have kept them because the basics of those guitars worked perfectly and I didn´t wanted to take the risk of returning them so that they could send me a new one without aesthetic defects but with other major flaws. But this is not the case with a Gibson, that is in the highest league and for the money paid, one expects effective quality control. That lip on the neck is unacceptable to me, as someone have said before, every time you play it you will see it and if you want to sell it you will have to lower the price.
    Still, as I said, I understand the choice.

  • @michelventura2507
    @michelventura2507 4 месяца назад

    I totally respect your choice but in all fairness the right competitor for the LP tribute is the Revstar Standard, as they have similar prices, though the Revstar Standard is still cheaper. The fact that the Revstar Element puts up a fight costing less than half the price of the LP says a lot about the quality of this guitar.

    I'm pretty sure if the Yamaha had been superior in sound - even by a smidge - you would have gone with it. But In this case the Gibson does sound better to me - but only by a narrow margin. In these circumstances the head vs heart thing kicks in - and the heart won. Especially if humbucking sounds are becoming more important to you. Enjoy your Les Paul - you thoroughly deserve it!!

  • @philjones8693

    Completely understand the decision - a treat to yourself is a special thing, and a Gibson LP, because of the history of the type, has a certain "something" that goes beyond all the physical attributes.

  • @tomwhittaker9461
    @tomwhittaker9461 Год назад +1

    You could just change the pickups in the Revstar and it could get you where you want tonally, it has an excellent body construciton, I think. That would cost 470 € plus maybe 100-200 € for pickups, so we're at 570-670 € instead of 1500 €. Will the Gibson TRULY be 800 € better than the Revstar after the pickup change?

    I had an RS820 and a 2017 Gibson LP Tribute HP I only have one,now it’s the Gibson I kept only because the Classic 57’s Pickups are just sweet, it still have a Revstar 720B which I love. I did however change the bling on the HP and got rid off the robot tuners and stick a set of Grovers on it.

    It’s amazing that the Revstar Element is like 1/3 of the price of the LP Tribute and he still almost kept the Revstar. If he was comparing the Revstar Standard instead, which has better pickups, it would be a much more fair race…

  • @michaelbrohl1625
    @michaelbrohl1625 Год назад

    I completely understand and respect your choice. For me I have two factors that point me at the Revstar. First is Gibson dodgey quality. Yours is obviously well put together but if you buy on-line there is a significant chance that the one you receive could be shite. So if you go Gibson make sure you test out the exact guitar you will be buying. There are return policies of course but I shouldn't have to ( and don't want to ) deal with that for a guitar that is $1300. Which brings me to point number two. At less than half the price, the Revstar quality is better and most likely you will receive a top notch instrument without dealing with any hassles. Maybe sacrifice some in the sound department but not a whole lot. Also, pickups can be easily swapped out and it would still cost less than the Gibson. Thank you for another great video. I really enjoy your channel.

    Congrats on your decision mate. I made the same decision, when I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Studio and a Gibson Les Paul Studio. The guitars are worlds apart in feel and sound, and everything else. Should you decide to see the Gibson in the future, it has better resale value. The Epi was a nice guitar but it lacked the "oomph" (technical term, lol), of the Gibson. Needless to say I kept the Gibson. Everything was better on the Gibson, the electronics, feel, sound, pickups etc. I paid $400 (US) for the Epi, and for $1,600 for the Gibson. Is Gibson worth the $1,600? Probably not. But I had this desire to play what my heroes play. Never regret your decision on the Gibson purchase. I hate it when you see rock stars playing endorsing their Epi Signature guitar demoing. But you never see them playing their Epiphones live. Again congrats.

Now i do own the Gibson since 2018 i also have a 89 custom which ive owned for 30 odd years. You may say why the tribute and the reason is it plays just so and sounds that good that ive had trouble putting it into words, but sometimes a maker accidentally puts out something thats just right and Gibson has done just that. I know you are going to have this guitar for a long time like me just enjoy. cheers Steve.

  • @RByrne
    @RByrne 2 года назад

    I have a few Gibsons, and have owned many over the years at all prices. I find they really get good at the LP Studio, but below that they really aren't a great value. Thing is the parts and materials don't work well together. When it comes to electronics and hardware, a guitar is as good as the worst component. When you get to the Studio level, quality is good across the guitar and everything works well together. Tribute is a beautiful guitar, but they do cheap out in a few areas.
    Yamaha does this at all price levels. When if they use cheaper parts on the entry level stuff, they are still good quality and it all works well together.
    I plan on buying the Revstar Standard when it comes out, but I'll still keep my Gibsons.

    Certainly nothing wrong with buying anything that you have always wanted & a very valid reason to treat yourself with something you are very happy to own. on a practical front however Gibson are basically an obsolete manufacturer due to modern CNC techniques (Gibson however use CNC in building all their guitars including the USA models) & modern QC. I would hope that Tribute LP doesn't have the terrible headstock angle design & has a volute at least - a visit to luthier would be in order when the headstock snaps. electric guitar players are stuck with the notion that shelling out £1k+ for a guitar will get them notably better instruments - it will not. They are paying for a brand & the marketing that goes with it.

    First, I don't agree about the not keeping both. Second, I only have a Revstar Standard, which in comparisons imho, sounds more complex, full, open and lively than the Element. I also have a Les Paul Classic (with Custom Shop Seymour Duncan numbered Hand wounds), a Les Paul Tribute and 2 Les Paul Specials (1 each of P90 and Humbucker), all Gibsons.
    And if I was forced to, on a just playing criteria, I would take the Revstar over All but the Classic, no questions. It would tough, but I would go with the Classic most likley for the same reasons basically (I'm a handful of years older, and dang it I earned the Classic).
    Now from a mercenary standpoint, I'd keep the lesser Gibsons because, they are all worth as much or more than I have in each of them. We will see on the Revstar over time.

    I replaced the PUs in a Les Paul Tribute with some by Missing Link Audio and I love the guitar now.
    Which is good, because I bought it to gift to my girlfriend in September, so I wanted it to be just right.
    Pair it with a Blackstar Studio 10 EL34 amp and enjoy!

    All this talk about returning the LP has some validity BUT when a particular instrument speaks to you there’s no arguing with it. Another one even of the same type might not feel the same. Congratulations on your choice John and well done for demonstrating what a versatile instrument a Les Paul can be. They are not just for blues and G’n’R you know.

    I think you made the right choice. The Revstar looks better and cooler but i dont like the sound of those pickups. I think the Gibson sound better and its a better value. But if the Revstar had better pickups i would have gone with that guitar. In every video of the Revstar models i like the sound better from the P 90’s than the humbuckers. Its a pity they dont offer P90’s in the cheaper models. I hope you one day will try out the Revstar P90’s

    Great choice!
    That's the LP on my radar, *but* in the honeyburst. Love the look of the top, and kind of a pseudo binding w/the contrast against the mahogany.

    Agree about the humbuckers. I'm even going to let my Sire LC S7 FMN go. I'll be keeping the Sire L7 goldtop. I had a Les Paul Tribute recently but let it go as it wasn't any better than the Epiphone 1960s tribute Prizm (Gibson 57 classics) and my Epiphone LP 59 standard limited (Gibson Burstbuckers). The Sire has made way for an Epiphone LP Pro-III Plus with the Gibson zebra 57s and Peter Green switching.

    Yamaha is a keeper (and better overall guitar) plus you can make more money from giving the LP. Win win in my book.

    Once again Gibson get away with sending out a substandard guitar and not having it sent back. While this continues they will continue to produce guitars of a quality that other manufacturers would not get away with. Additionally the comparison would be fairer if the mid price Yamaha was used not the entry level as the prices would have been comparable. Anyway enjoy your guitar but I think you will see that defect every time you pick it up.

      I won't fault John, if he loves the guitar that's all that matters. However, I would have sent it back. If I were to sell it down the road, why should I take a hit on the resale value because of their hack workmanship and lack of QC/QA and letting it go out the door. The weasels at gibson count on their loyal followers to accept and overlook their continued slap in the face. I agree, the Revstar RSS model blows the Gibson tribute and studio models away with their appointments and price. Only 800 smackers,

      It just has more "oldschool" type pickups, you can throw in pickups like these into the Revstar and they would probably sound so similar that it would be impossible to tell them apart.

    Well.... I look at those as very different guitars! That said.... neither one "checks all the boxes" for me. I prefer double cut guitars. I prefer a carved maple top over the mahogany body. I also would like coil taps available (instead on "coil splits") to increase the versatility and tonal options....individually .... instead on both tapped or not. I'd be looking elsewhere, but these are all personal preferences after YEARS of trying out a LOT of different guitars. Enjoy the Les Paul! It is truly a Classic and there is nothing wrong with that one verses the more expensive versions in my view.
