As I was interviewing him, I was aware of how rare it was. He is a friend of a friend of a friend and the stars just aligned for me to do the interview, so I had to go for it.
Humans are so good at anthropomorhizing the behaviors of nature. It helps us to explain what we cannot understand. The volcano is not angry with us, it just spews a pyroclastic flow onto a village. I like the concept of the Kaiju just being...
I feel that the greatest strength of Godzilla as a character, the Godzilla franchise and the kaiju genre as a whole is its versatility. Kaijus can be anything from reincarnations of complex themes to interesting and deep characters to big punching machines. Godzilla is the living embodiment of the atomic bomb and that makes him dual by nature. He can be anything from a metaphor to a destroyer to a superhero. There is a Godzilla movie for everyone. That is how hearing people say "kaiju movies are meant to always be dump" rubs me the wrong way. Because that goes against the genre's greatest strength and against the reason as to why so many people keep coming back to the genre.
Cool video ! I enjoyed the Kaiju facts and the cross over influences from yokai .I've watched every Godzilla film from all the different eras ,it is quite a long running franchise that has my respect . That being said,to me the Gamera triology is the best of the modern Kaiju films. They are a great blend of rubber suits and CGI done right,at least when those films came out. The last run of Godzilla Toho studio films was enjoyable too, Shin Godzilla being one of my favorites of the entire series. As far as the next film coming up this year I'll have to see for myself if it measures up.
This was awesome!! I never saw the link between kaiju and man's negligence to nature, or even considered it; however after it was said I can see it. I need to brush up on more kaiju movies.
I recommend the Heisei Gamera Trilogy written by Ito-san, especially Gamera 2 and 3. Actually, if it wasn't for you I never would have met him. I found out about Workaway because of your video, and through workaway I met my friend Rob, and through Rob I met Ito-san. So, in a way, you made this video possible!
I'd add that just because a director is a fan of something, doesn't mean they truly understand the spirit of something or can create in that way. I don't think the American films 'get it' at all. The cultural differences in artistic creation are vast. The Pacific Rim films and the Hollywood Godzillas don't feel like kaiju eiga at all to me, but more like typical Hollywood fare that is using only superficial aspects of the works they claim to understand. Ultimately, they have none of the depth or emotional resonance real kaiju films have. IMHO
Hey...Kaneko said he wasn't a big fan of Gamera growing up and look how well he did. His one Godzilla film is a favorite of mine too. But I LOVE Pacific Rim and the American Godzilla films as well...er...minus Zilla 1998 of course.
Very rare that a japanese legend can be interviewed like what you did, don't worry about the audio, you did a great work!

The audio was fine, it made the interview seem less formal and more genuine. Thank you for that insight, I really enjoyed this.
Well now I want a Feodal-Japan Kaiju movie.

I advise you to watch korean "Pulgasari" (1985)
That video of del toro in Japan was just too precious
