'ㄱ' is more of a G sound like in "giggle", except just a little harder. It's like if K and G had a baby. And 'ㅋ' is basically a K sound like in "key". It's easier to distinguish sounds like that when you can tell the difference between musical notes that are a half step apart. Like if you went to piano and played a white and black key that are next to each other, and could tell which one was higher/lower, that would help a lot with learning these sounds.
For people that are new, the main difference of ㄱ and ㅋ is this If it’s 가 its pronounced as ga If it’s 카 it’s pronounced as ka In the video she used 기 (gi) and 키 (ki) Thats why they sound the same :)

This lesson was very difficult for me at first, but once i read the comments and people explained the difference in the sound pronunciation it made this 10x easier!
Really loving it so far. My only small complaint is that not enough time is given after writing of example words so one can pause and figure out the speech for onself before given the correct speech. Also sometimes it's a bit confusing for example, the syllable at 3:13 is pronounced "hjuw" while at 4:07 the same syllable is pronounced "kjuw".
You're right particularly about the hjuw and kjuw pronunciation. I wonder if it's due to the following syllable, like the possible pronunciation of "and you" as "anju"

Guys, pronouncing ㄱ vs ㅋ is not like the [g] vs [k] sound. (Although some romanisation systems do use 'g' vs 'k' in writting) ㄱ is unaspirated, ㅋ is aspirated. It's like the /k/ sound in English 'skill' vs 'kill' 1. In 'kill', you give the /k/ with some exhaled wind, so it sounds like [kh]ill 2. In 'skill', you pronounce it without blowing the air, so it's just s[k]ill In English and some non-Asian languages, it may be hard to differentiate the similarly sounds as people of the languages unconciously consider the sounds to be the same. In many Asian languages, however, the two sounds are clearly different. In the next videos, you may also found Korean consonants that involve aspiration, especially in sounds like /p/ (spill vs pill), and /t/ (stable vs table). Hope this helps.

+Josh Binder No, they're not. It took me a while to figure it out. At first they sounded the same to me, but later I realized that the first one is a g, but not a strong g as in English. By that I mean you gently vibrate your vocal chords. The second one is completely voiceless. Listen to it carefully and you'll notice it too.
+Mateus Cruz i disagree, its never a g. koreans dont have something like g. g is a natural outcome of ㄱ in the middle because of stress, but by itself there is no g in hangeul. but at the front it definitly is a soft k by all means.
I suggest people like me to download "write it korean" app to understand pronunciation better. As i am finding pronounciation difficult for similar words.

im new to Korean language and i think it is much more easier than Japanese. i gave up learning Japanese because the alphabets are very difficult especially the Kanji. As for Korean it is a bit confusing when it comes to the pronunciation because most of the letters sounds alike, same like Arabic, some people find it hard to distinguish between ح and ه or ز and ذ

Kanji is a total pain in the ass though haha for me japan pronounces things like in spanish so thats the main reason its easier plus i memorized all of hiragana and katakana. For the consonant 'kiok' = ㄱ Some Koreans make it sound like 'g', while you make is sound 'k'. However, I think you are right because the consonant 'ㅋ' sounds 'khi' so according to the vowel rule ㄱ should be ki. The one with 1 stroke is g sounding the one with 2 stroke sounds like a k

I agree with the person who said there was not enough time to read before the answer was given. Also, the vowels are in a particular order on the screen, but during pronunciation we just skipped around aimlessly!!!!! lol I couldn't guess which would be next, so I couldn't practice.

No, you're not the only one. But it's smart to write it all down and practice and revise. Having it in one place and in your own words makes it easier to learn and remember. I'd say everyone should be writing and practicing if they're seriously learning the language.

The difference between ㅋ[kʰ] and ㄱ[k] is really confusing for English speakers. Most of us hear them as [kʰ] and [g].

Yeah they're obviously using the 'K' sound for both but I don't think they realize it...hahah
+Josh Binder No, they're not. It took me a while to figure it out. At first they sounded the same to me, but later I realized that the first one is a g, but not a strong g as in English. By that I mean you gently vibrate your vocal chords. The second one is completely voiceless. Listen to it carefully and you'll notice it too.
+Mateus Cruz i disagree, its never a g. koreans dont have something like g. g is a natural outcome of ㄱ in the middle because of stress, but by itself there is no g in hangeul.
but at the front it definitly is a soft k by all means.

im new to Korean language and i think it is much more easier than Japanese. i gave up learning Japanese because the alphabets are very difficult especially the Kanji. As for Korean it is a bit confusing when it comes to the pronunciation because most of the letters sounds alike, same like Arabic, some people find it hard to distinguish between ح and ه or ز and ذ
Muhammad Farhan don't give up in japanese I'm doing both of them at the same time and I have never given up!!
In speech japanese is easier than Korean, although Korean writing system is the easiest in the world
hahah thats so funny. for me both are easy but i find japanese easier. Kanji is a total pain in the ass though haha
for me japan pronounces things like in spanish so thats the main reason its easier plus i memorized all of hiragana and katakana. Since my friend is learning korean i decided to join her so id have someone to work with and also i wanted to learn korean badly anyways hahaha. since i was a kid i wanted to move to korea or japan lol
Arabic is easier with alphabetes in my opinion.
My language is tamil... And its really easy for me to compare this with tamil and learn fast!!!

For the consonant 'kiok' = ㄱ
Some Koreans make it sound like 'g', while you make is sound 'k'.
However, I think you are right because the consonant 'ㅋ' sounds 'khi' so according to the vowel rule ㄱ should be ki.
But, why do some Koreans make it sound gi, please can you answer so it might clear my doubt once and for all.

Lots of them find it difficult but again i will make it easy for Indians . ㄱ (क) , 가 (का), 기(की) , 구( कू), 고 (को) ,거 (कौ), 교 (क्यो) , 갸 (क्या) , 겨 (क्यौ) , 규 (क्यू) similarly for ㅋ (ख) ,카 (खा) , 키(खी), 쿠 (खू) , 코 (खो) , 커 (खौ) 켜 (ख्यौ) , 캬 (ख्या) , 쿄 (ख्यो) , 큐 (ख्यू ) and for this ㅎ(ह) , 하 (हा) 히 (ही) , 후 ( हू) 호(हो) , 허 (हौ), 효(ह्यो) , 혀 (ह्यौ) , 햐 ( ह्या), 휴 (ह्यू) and for those who don't know hindi vowels better just copy those letters in brackets ( ) and translate it and listing will help you to understand better .
