Hi Tiffany, thank you for sharing your knowledge, I'm making a baby sweater right now with a 5 weight yarn. I'm using a size 6 hook, the pattern calls for a 4 weight yarn but I wanted to make it a bit bigger. Thank you for the info on this 🧶👍.

I'd just like to add that you can really use whatever size hook you'd like for your project. I've used a 5.5mm hook with a DK.. it gave me a lacey, drapey project. It's all up to you and what type of project you're making. honestly. One thing I did notice is that Tiffany, you said size 6 is know as "roving." Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always thought that roving was the TYPE of yarn, not the size. Some yarn is plied, some is chain spun, some is roving. There are others but I'm drawing a blank here. Your video is fantastic and very helpful, especially with those ply numbers because I never have a clue about those 😂 Thank for informing us on even more crochet knowledge! 💗💗

Felting wool is a type of roving yarn, 5-6 mm where I‘m from. But there‘s also that ridiculous super-chunky, often-not-even-real Merino yarn for those hand-knit blankets, about 2 cm thick. Roving means that it was not spun, or very loosely, the fibers lie freely together. Some roving yarns have a synthetic thread that is then wrapped around the roving yarn, giving it some shape, but not much. The German word for those is ‚pearl yarn‘ since it looks like bumpy pearls around that thin thread.

The size 7 hook is an unsung hero. It is sometimes referred to as G+. I really like it and use it often.
But it's super difficult to find! At least for me. Besides clover I dont know a single one that exists out there.
And (unpopular opinion alert) Clover isnt my favorite though I have it in 7mm just so I dont have a gap in my sizes

all of the things you mentioned I don’t see on the manufactures yarn label. there is always the recommended size crochet/knitting needle size, however that is it.
True, what I mentioned is not all shown on the yarn label. And depending on different brands and fibers, you will want to utilize a different size hook to achieve a desired look. It's really all about what you are wanting as your outcome. This video was to provide a foundation baseline. But with everything, there's always exceptions. 😊

I’m new to the art. I’m finding the limiting factor to be my tension. The same row of single crochet stitches has both holes and knots. Mere stitches apart.
All of my Mexican friends use the same tiny hook (size 0 is huge for them) so their gauge is based on tension.
How interesting! I am fascinated by the different ways people, cultures, regions can do things. It's fun to learn and helps us grow. 🤗💖🧶

Just what I am looking for but how about those yarns that do not have suggested crochet hook size? The major issue I got RN since I just picked up this yarn not realizing that we'd need recommended crochet hooks...
Great question! It can be challenging when working with a yarn that does not have a label or does not have a recommended hook size on the label. But there is something you can do. Figure out the yarn's WPI or (wraps per inch). This will tell you what size the yarn is and then you can compare the yarn size to this video and the recommended crochet hook to use. 🤗 I actually have a video showing you how to figure out WPI right here: ruclips.net/video/Kx0vl3qHYw8/видео.htmlsi=64rliXRP618F21jp. As for the chart to reference, you can just google WPI chart and search images and you will find a bunch. 🤗💖🧶. I hope this helps!

Hi Nora! I would use the 9 mm crochet hook between any 6.5 mm or 10 mm crochet hook. It will provide you with looser stitches than the 6.5mm but slightly tighter stitches than the 10 mm. Great question! Thank you for asking! 😊🧡🧶

Oof, That's a bummer when the label doesn't give you much info. Try the WPI trick (wraps per inch). Wrap the yarn loosely on a crochet hook or pencil or something. Keep wrapping loosely until you can measure a 1 inch increment. Then count how many times you were able to wrap the yarn around. Take that number and look at the WPI chart and it will tell you approximately what size the yarn can be. I made a short video showing me demonstrating this and I added a WPI chart link in the description section of the video you can click on and print out. OR you can just google WPI charts, go to images and you'll see lots of options. Once you know approximately what size yarn you have you can then get an idea of the hook to pair with it. 😊❤️🧶
Why is there such a jump in hook sizes for size 5? Recommended is 6.5 mm b but options are either 6mm for tighter stitches or 10mm for looser stitches?! What happened to crochet hooks size 7mm, 8mm, and 9 mm?!
And similar for size 6 yarn recommended is 10mm but 6.5mm for tighter stitch and 15mm for loose stitches. What about 12mm?
That is a very good question! From my experience the 7-9mm crochet hooks are more rarely used. Looking at many of the yarn labels, these hook sizes are most commonly recommended for the yarn thicknesses. But that does not mean we completely rule out the 7-9 mm crochet hooks. They do still work wonderfully and have a great purpose in some project types.

What does a wpi mean?
Hi Sheryl! That is a great question. It stands for "Wraps Per Inch" . There are some places where they determine the size of yarn by how many times they can wrap it around a ruler in a one inch section. Pretty interesting don't you think? 😊🧡🧶

Hi Jannette! Actually there is no 4.75mm crochet hook. I have seen 4.00, 4.25, and 4.50mm. Then it goes straight to 5.00mm. I hope this helps! 😊🧶🧡

Great question! First convert what a 3ply and 4ply yarn is to weight, then this comparison will make more sense. 3pl = Size 1 weight yarn, 4ply = Size 2 weight yarn.
my yarn only says knitting needle stuff-
Ah, the yarn labels I have read first show the knitting information and then the crochet information right after that. Perhaps the yarn you are using is different and does only specify for knitting. You never mention what size crochet hook for 8ply i always use 8ply and the hook i use 3.50
Oh! An 8ply is a 3 weight yarn or DK. It might be great for you to download a yarn sizing chart with all the different names for yarn so you know what size yarn is equivalent to a certain ply. I like this one if you would like to check it out. pin.it/2oLMzBf
What brand yarn do you recommend
Hi Elaine! Oh gosh I am really all over the map when it comes to brands. I rely more on what I want the finished project to look like, the vibe and feel that I am looking for. Then I try to find a yarn that matches that. It's never really the same brand. 😊🧡🧶

@@elainerush6837 Scratchy yarns. Crystal from Bag-o-Day Crochet always tries this out by rubbing the yarn against the front of her neck, where a scarf would touch. I do it with the sensitive part of skin on the inside of my wrist, since I‘m one of those sweaty people, ugh. ^^
If you buy synthetic, at least make sure it will last. I prefer cotton, mercerized for pretty things and easier to work with, standard for comfy things with a slightly bigger hook size to reduce splitting.
What does ply mean?
You know when you look at yarn and you see multiple strands twisted together? Each one of those strands is a ply 😊
