Last year, with 3 years of gaming journalism experience, I packed up my things and moved from NYC to the Bay Area. Just 20 minutes away from the offices of both IGN and GAMESPOT, my dream was to work for one of my favorite gaming news outlets. I had spent years perfecting my craft, producing video content, and writing tons of articles. After applying (multiple times) to Gamespot as both a video producer and writer, I was turned down for both. I asked why I had been turned down, I was a screenwriting major in a film program, literally the best of both worlds, and I got no answer. Months after, my gaming journalism career seems to grind to a halt as some of my highest paying clients went under, and I had no prospects after being turned down by GS and IGN. I moved back to NYC and went after a position at Kotaku. 300 people applied and I made the top 6, but again, was sadly turned down. I am still writing, I am still creating. If you hit a rut, do not stop.

I have a few questions for the follow up:
    1) I mainly do video reviews in the style of traditional media, though I know reviews are only a piece of the whole to covering games. What other kinds of video game content should I create in order to maximize my chances of making it to a major outlet.
    2) With the way things are going in the industry, it seems most people want to watch videos instead of reading articles. Should I bother with writing editorials and publishing them to a website, or should I take the editorial pieces I write and go the extra mile to turn them into a video (similar to how The Point is editorial writing in video form)
    3) What does GameSpot look for in an employee?
    4) I'm working towards my degree in Journalism, and won't be finished until 2019. Where do you think the Games Journalism Scene will in four years?
Thank you so much for everything you do Danny! You're doing us all a great service!

I've been a fan of yours since you began the 'Escape From Mount Stupid' series. They really made me consider video game journalism as a job, despite the fact that it would be financial suicide if I did go for it. While I'm not at the position to change career paths right now, this video of yours made me realize that it isn't just about getting a job as a 'video game journalist' or being involved in the games industry. Rather, it's about showing your passion about the medium that you love so dearly. So, yeah, thanks. You just inspired me to get back into writing.

I'm not aiming to be in games journalism (if I ever grow a pair, I'd much rather be a teacher first), but you have made me far more enthusiastic about videogames than I could ever be on my own. All the empty 'promises' about regular content aside (too harsh? :-P), you're the only internet 'personality' I actually follow. You've been non-stop entertaining since the early GS UK days. And since we're the same age, I hope we can grow old together. ;-P Keep up the good work. If talks like this will lead to more people like you (which I doubt, though), I'll be a happy internet consumer.
And get over that guilt. It's good to be humble, but you're doing a good job and you've been doing it for a while, so you deserve to be where you are.

Hello Danny! I think I may have seen you as a guest on some Kinda Funny Games Daily shows and pretty glad I found this video. For a long while, I have been trying to get into games media and still working towards that goal.
Currently, I am working as a video editor for a TV station here in Memphis. I do have a B.A. in Communications as well. Since 2014, I have been editing video in addition to audio board oping, using studio cameras, ENG, and Chyron/Camio/GFX. However, audio and video editing is my strong suit.
As of last year, I have been regularly creating RUclips content solely on focusing on another hobby outside of gaming. I am not sure if that would be enough to break into games media but I hope that along with my work experience in TV news gives me a fighting chance.
I appreciate you making this video. It has given me some hope and a reality check as well if I can't get my foot in the door. I will definitely have to check out more of your videos.
If at all possible, would it be possible for you to critique some of my videos and demo reels on my channel? I would appreciate that additional advice and at the very least improve myself as a content creator.

I'm one of the ones who didn't make it. I was (and still am) a self-employed video producer, so it kinda still worked out for me in the end.
What disheartened me the most about my failure to break in was how often those prestigious Video Producer jobs went to people already in the industry - people sidestepping from one games’ site to another. It felt like something of a revolving door of talent that I never stood a chance of circumventing- I didn’t know anyone already in the biz, and I wasn’t charismatic enough to make myself stand out from the crowd.
And I think charisma is one thing you didn’t mentioned, but in my opinion, it plays a really important part. From an outsider’s perspective, all you people who 'made it' are all the ‘beautiful people’ - confident, out-going, funny and charismatic. I was and am a good video producer, but I think deep down, I always knew I wasn’t ‘cool’ enough to make it.
Anyway, question: as mentioned, I’m a freelance video producer. Will large video game websites ever accept freelance video submissions, like they do with freelance writing submissions? Or outsource certain video work, e.g, reviews of small indie games you never planned to cover? Like you say, there is plenty of talent out there - you could get a tonne of content for a relatively small cost.
Thanks for being forthright about your experience.

    Very insightful / honest video.
I think the biggest question is what is Games Journalism now / going to be in five years? I think traditional games coverage will continue regardless, although to me it seems like the younger audience finds the non traditional more appealing. I will be 30 this year and some of what my three nephews (oldest is 13) think / tell me about games just...makes me feel old. They can spend hours watching other people play games, and get more enjoyment than if they were playing a game themselves. I have a cousin who is 17 now that talks to me about tons of games she has never played. A couple years ago we talked for 30 minutes about Skyrim and Fallout before I realized she had never played it (I fixed this by getting her a 360 the year before last). Gaming is more popular now than it has ever been and more socially accpetable, which I am thrilled about. However, I can't help but wonder where it is going.
I also wonder if there is any future in writing in Games Journalism. I hope there is. But I am wondering how many, particularly that younger audience, will read articles when their is a video they can watch instead.

I think this is good advice for wider than games media. I do student radio at University and keep going backwards and forwards on whether to pursue it. I probably won't in practice because of the 'most of you won't get in' part applying there as well, and it's sort of an all or nothing attempt, because by pursuing it I would give up the chance of getting on a grad scheme - obviously I could have another fall back but it isn't a risk I really think is right to take. Who knows though, I may be able to come back to it one day in a roundabout way - the decision doesn't need to be made at 22 I guess!

Charlie Brooker is great example. All his shows are amazing and I even used his "How Videogames Changed the World" movie in my masters degree paper.
3rd thing is the most important... but we live in era of youtube and self made content... if you ask TotalBiscuit if he want to do games journalism he will refuse because you don't need to be in the industry to participate and support what you love.

Don't beat yourself up about the 'survivors guilt' to much man, you worked your ass of for 5 years before you got in, and you're one of the best journalists/youtubers/vid producers I can think of. You fully deserve the spot you have in the industry ;)
    Here's an interesting question you might be able to shed some light on;
I'm actually trying to get in the games industry myself, although, not at the journalism end of the spectrum. I'm actually trying to do the one-man-band indie thing like, say, Toby Fox :) (And since I have no real IT background or anything, I'm having to learn programming, animation and sound design and what not in the process, call me crazy, haha)
By now you must've met quite a few succesfull and unsuccesfull indie devs, so I am curious as to what you think makes a succesfull indie developer :)
    Cheers
(I've allready figured out that working your ass of with some stubornness sprinkled on top is an ingredient, MAN making games is a lot of work, haha)

Here is a question for you next video: Should I focus on one thing with video games to land that job I want? I have 4 years of Broadcasting experience and would love to get into the media side of games but realistically I know my odds are better actually making games. Should I focus on my programming and work on audio and video production stuff on the side? I don't have a degree so I am trying to make myself wanted by self-teaching. I also live in South Carolina that has no game company but willing to move for sure. When applying for a job how do I know I have what it takes? Mentally I know I do but how do I come across without that degree?

In my experience, games journalism (at least in the UK) is more about who you know, and not what you know. Quality of your work is not as important as making contacts, though multiple skills (writing, video/audio, hosting experience) are also pretty much essential. Also, if you don't live in the big games journo hub cities (London, San Francisco, etc.) you probably don't stand a chance.

great advice Danny! Been trying to do just about everything you suggested for the last year with my RUclips channel, and my goal to not stop until I get that green-light. I'm really glad you mentioned the back-up plan aspect too, because I feel that's always something missing from just about any Industry-advice-esque video (not just restricted to the game industry).
However, I have a somewhat vital question for you, and it would be great if you responded with your honest opinion...What's the stability of a Gamespot/IGN/ ect anymore? By that I mean: do you, especially with the latest tragedy of GameTrailers' closure, honestly think there's still a long future with these kind of websites? Is there a clock ticking down to when RUclips creators solely control the press side of Video Game content, or are you confident that this will continue to be an industry standard? Giant Bomb is my most frequently visited site these days, with Gamespot not far behind, and this is a tradition I personally just don't want to see fade like it appears it is.

This is probably not the question you were expecting, but what are your thoughts for pursuing something more creative if you feel your backup plan is also weak? I got a degree and have been trying to work towards becoming a developer, but the hurdles feel so steep. Meanwhile, doing something creative might be what I really want, but it's hard to justify practicing things I love to do, when the thing that might be my job is not as strong as it should be.

Very useful advice Danny, I'm keen to get my voice heard within the gaming community and have wanted to for a while. I see RUclips as the best platform to do so and have tried to make some videos in the past but my Laptop is just too shitty to handle anything besides minesweeper. I'm currently pursuing a qualification in quantity surveying as an apprentice and I'm trying to save for a decent PC but good wages only kick in upon completion. It's been annoying watching topics pass by that I want to touch on. I've been a big fan of your work on the point and truthfully it's the reason I'm subscribed to Gamespot. I'm curious however about how you feel towards the ease at which people can gain a voice within the gaming community. Having heard how your persistence over 5 years only just paid off do you find it frustrating to now see the "Traditonal" media coverage on games loose some of its audience to bedroom gamers? I'd appreciate any feedback and would wish you well but I can't forgive you for that poor performance in the Rocket League final (your partner sucked). John, 19, London.

    Honestly I read a lot of gaming/tech/movie/whatnot news and Gamespot seems to generally be slow to the punch, by that I mean I often seem to know more about what happened than the article mentions. As a result I've been dying to be a freelance news editor for GS or a similar publication, I came close to being a staff editor once but the good news never came. I'm a computer programmer in terms of degrees but I really dislike it at this point, and my particular circumstances don't grant me a lot of chances to pursue something that I'm passionate about. I'm not afraid of hard work, I'm afraid of unfulfilling work. That 3rd point hit too close to reality. Didn't depress me at all... ;_;

Thanks a ton for this video, you're awesome for doing this, glad I subscribed to this channel. So apparently having the right degree isn't as important as I'd previously thought, not as important as having an impressive portfolio to show anyway. Pretty inspiring and informative stuff and realistic too. I realize I might not be able to break in but hey there's no harm in trying right? Especially if I'm really passionate about the industry.
I do have one question though, do you think that having just a lot of written work to how to potential employers is going to be enough or is it in this day and age imperative to have video-making skills, being at ease in front of the camera and stuff like that? Looking forward to the next video, cheers!

Thanks for putting up this video! I am currently getting my BS in Communications consecration in Digital Media. In your follow up video could you address more ways to get in contact with actual media employers? I currently run a campus wide podcast/interviews with staff and while I do have a small following in my local area, I am finding it hard to break out to wider a audience. More importantly, I am afraid of not getting attention from any major media at all. I don't have my eyes solely focused on video games but any advice on breaking into the media business is helpful.
I also wanted to say thanks for taking the time to make these amazing videos in your spare time. Danny,
My background is in audiovisual design and ad serving. I have a well-built studio, a website, a youtube channel for the site, and (I believe) some good ideas to share to the public. However, my perfectionist personality can get in the way of my success and ability to release my productions at times because often, I don't believe its as good as it could be. For this reason, my questions might seem oddly specific.
    1. Is there a "personality" or demeanor that one should adopt to get a job with a well established company like GS? I wouldn't want to step on toes, but my writing tends to be pretty opinionated. Do you think I'd be better suited as an independent producer of games media? Ad sales and hits on my site are not stellar.
    2. Do you believe that writing or style makes for a more hirable employee? Its hard to find time to make full fledged productions with deep content without a crew, so which is more immediately noticeable in your favorite productions?
    3. I'm not really into Let's Plays, but they seem to be easy to produce and accessible. Necessary evil?
    4. Finally: Your favorite editing suites for video/audio editing? I'd like to keep things simple and affordable, and my studio may be a bit complex for expeditious release of content.
As you can see, I can get a bit ahead of myself in the planning stages. I just don't know if my focus needs to be more on content or gloss. Real Talk vs. Marketability, I guess.
    Thanks man. Big fan.

This was a really good video to watch, thank you Danny.
I'm in something of the early part of the process, having just graduated from college. I've already made my own personal site and youtube channel and have begun making content. Some of it good, some of it not great, but I am making that constant effort to keep churning out stuff at least semi-regularly. I'm about 5 months in at this point and it is really hard, but I genuinely enjoy it and I enjoy it in such a way I want to keep doing it. Even if it doesn't end up working out as a career.
Though I suppose if there's one question I'd want to ask it's do you have any advice for networking to try and find the right people to talk to or get advice from? I'm making content and slowly building something on RUclips but my personal site is pretty much a ghost town.

Thank you for the insight, Danny!
For your next video, I do have a question. I have experience writing for my own blog and a few smaller websites, but I'm starting to notice most major outlets are putting more of an emphasis on video content. Is my writing experience still valid, or should I start experimenting with video if I'm looking to get hired on somewhere?
Again, thank you for this video. I'm looking forward to the next one :)

I'm about to start my own youtube channel, got the name sorted and everything. I contribute for some local magazines here in Brisbane. One magazine even has me as an online presenter which I'm chuffed about. I'm english so maybe it's because of that but due to my Wolverhampton accent sticking out strongly out here in Australia but I'm constantly told how I should start my own channel. In one of your previous vids you talked about how channels like Angry Joe and the like are now at big press events like what the division had a while back. Is it honestly the best way to go now? start a channel get some fans then a patreon and go from there? (I know that would take lots of hard work and time) I mean you can leave this out but getting twenty grand a month for doing a "some what funny" podcast sounds alright to me.

Hi Danny, loved the video! I actually have a question about getting your work in front of people in the video game media industry. I created a RUclips channel at the start of 2020 and have been teaching myself video editing to create game reviews and discussion pieces. I'm really proud of what I've been able to accomplish in that short time, and I want to show it off to people in the industry to get some feedback and to get some advice on finding opportunities or freelance work within the video game industry. The problem I've run into is that I'm not really sure how to go about getting in touch with these people. I would normally send an email asking for a quick chat, but I can't seem to find emails for most of the industry people I would like to speak with. Is reaching out on Twitter too public? Or do you think that's the best way to start a dialogue with industry veterans? Or is there another way to get in touch with people in the industry?

No, you do not need a degree and should not pursue one unless you're planning on becoming a doctor, engineer, accountant, or some other profession that can actually justify that much classroom time. The argument that "it shows employers that you can stick something out" is terrible reasoning. That makes college a 4 year, $40,000 litmus test. Fuck that.

I'm currently studying Journalism, so if I were to apply to a gaming media site, would I try to put only gaming related work in my portfolio, or would it be okay to put other nongaming related work in there as well if I think it represents me best?

+Danny O'Dwyer Great video man, well done. It would be a dream to get into the video game industry, doing what you do on a daily basis, but I know there are SO many people out there trying. I am 36 almost 37, I have a full time career in IT and its awesome, I am lucky to have it right now. But games are my passion so my channel is just me expressing my hobby. I am starting to do more videos and captures regarding games with thoughts and playthroughs, but at this time in my life (just married, career, talking kids) I don't have the time to play all the games. So I will continue to do it, but with what I do and like. If I eventually get a following and can start doing more, then things may change, but right now im just having fun and I enjoy watching the things you put together as well as several others. So thanks for the advice, I will take it to heart, but I know where I need to be and go and even though games are my passion, ill probably keep them my hobby for now. I only hope that my videos are seen by some and they find them entertaining at least. Enjoy your week!TG

I don't know about blogger, but Tumblr is actually a really flexible choice. It has a stable posting system, customizable HTML, etc. On top of that, it allows you to reach people that aren't necessarily looking for your content, but content like yours without keeping you too confined. It's what I'd go with. Although, if you aren't looking at setting up your HTML in your own way, you may be stuck with it looking like your average Tumblr blog. The templates are rather limited in that sense, except for, maybe, the premium templates. I don't know about those. I run an average blog and I don't have the money for a premium template, so don't care enough to look.
But don't take this as a suggestion to using Tumblr. It has its pros, yes, but it also has its cons. The site, itself, can be rather buggy, at times; there are many that may deem it to be unprofessional, etc. But, ya know, sometimes ya gotta take risks.

+Triple Six I did English, Psychology, and Law. As Danny said, all of that helped in different ways, but it isn't necessary. Danny's tips about just doing what you want to do, putting it out there and then improving your craft are as beneficial as a degree or professional qualification.
