I used to work for a patent attorney, she had the means to defend her patents too. Even then, she was pretty savvy about which ones to bother with.
By putting this video out there you've created prior art so no-one else can patent your idea (in theory) 🤔

In theory, yes. But recent history of the USPTO suggests that they don't really put very much effort (if any) into prior art searches anymore (or for that matter considerations around "obviousness")...

Great idea Fran! I finally just put my strap button on the upper bout. I filed a flat in the center of the sharp edge of the bout just a tad wider than the strap button base diameter. This gave a good base for the button to mount and drill the screw hole. Had to drill the hole big enough to not split the narrow wood but small enough to get a good bite from the wood screws. This shifted the center point to the left enough to eliminate neck dive. I like that there is no button on the neck heel too. I didn’t like the feel when playing upper frets. I saw Dickey Betts playing an SG with the button on the upper bout. I know most won’t want to modify their guitars like this but I figured I won’t sell it anytime soon and want it comfortable to play. I got left arm and shoulder fatigue always holding the guitar from neck diving. I’m a Les Paul guy but after 45 years they are starting to kill my back and shoulder, the SG weight is a welcome relief and still get a similar LP tone. A bit less bottom end but still has that Gibson LP vibe. Been playing a 335 a lot anymore too.

I moved the strap button to the upper cut away horn on my SG when I was a kid back in the '70s. Because I saw Tony Iommi did that with his SG. After I did that I realized it changed the balance of the guitar when playing standing up. Made me even a bigger fan of Iommi and his band. I am now 65 and have four SGs and they all have that strap button mod on them. But your solution looks much easier and effective Fran. Great work. You're my new guitar hero. Love your channel.

Love the opening song! Brilliant solution for neck dive. In mid-late 70's I had a numbered reissue Gibson Reverse Firebird. Extreme neck dive. I either didn't know about StrapLocks or they didn't exist. My rear strap button would always let go if neck went too far south and headstock landed (it seemed) on the same spot on left foot metatarsal. One night the last time of the night it happened the headstock fell straight down and broke my foot. I finally used washers on either side of strap and a long larger diameter screw. Didnt help neck dive but saved my foot from further damage.

That's a great idea. I've had to explain to so many people why it's not a good idea to patent unless you're a rich corporation with lots of lawyers. Also, there are countries where the patent is plain meaningless - and once they get the publicly available idea then they go to work at making their own copies.

Brilliant! My 59 LP special has the same issue; it's caused by the strap pin being located on the back of the guitar instead of the fin; it was a terrible idea and Gibson ignored it. I'm not about to drill a hole in the fin of a 59 LP special. Hats off to Fran!

In the 10th grade (1977) , about 4 weeks before the high school
talent contest, my strap slipped off and the neck took a dive
for the floor and upon contact, the head broke off.
It was a very heavy electric Carvin and I was not too pleased about this event.
I did glue it back on and win 3rd place in the talent contest,
but soon afterwards it broke off again.
Anyway, after that, every guitar I owned had 2 straps.
I always added that 2nd one to avoid a repeat
    of this painful childhood memory.
College came along and my guitar days ended
as I fell in love with...computers.
By the way, you sure wear that thing very low.

The most valuable part of the patent process is patent pending. That's because it takes years between when you make your initial patent application to when the patent is approved, and for all of that time your secrets aren't public. Anyone who wants to infringe your idea has to figure it out for themselves, and most importantly, they won't know exactly what your patent claims are, and therefore won't know if they are infringing or not until you get your patent. In short, it gives you a couple years of a clear field in which you can market your invention while all competition has to wait.

Hi Fran, entertaining video. I've owned a 67/68 SG Junior since 1981, bought it when I was still at school. IIRC the first strap I had was Fender brand nearly identical to yours 'n I wore it out. I was unaware for many years of the SG Droop because... mine doesn't droop. With original strap button location, it balances perfectly. (I bought it for £150 - still have the hand-written receipt - and I'm seeing them listed - with original super-budget cardboard case - by the online optimists for £4,500 so go figure.)
However, I have just recently bought one of those affordable Korean-made Brian May pattern guitars and although I love it, it does have some droop until it's horizontal, so maybe a clip would help me out there.
PPS one of my oldest school buddies got into the world of patenting but yes, get someone else to pay for it!

And you have to carry the damn thing during hours of play. Your back won't be happy. A SG body is very light and thin. If that was an old style 50's baseball bat neck here, that would require a lot of lead.
But depending on the balance, a simple strap with suede lining will be enough to counter a slight neck dive.

  • @Ben_the_Ignorant
    @Ben_the_Ignorant Год назад

I had that problem on two guitars. On the SG I have sewn a few (thin, flexible) lead plates into the back of the strap. On a Stagg Tele clone I have sewn a rougher piece of strap on the inside of the regular strap. An older strap had remained close to a lamp for years, that's where I hung the guitar. The light, and probably UV's and some infrared, made the strap dry and brittle so it broke, but a long eough piece remained solid, and rougher than when it was new. That piece, about 50cm long, is so grippy it keeps the guitar motionless when I release it, but it moves if I want it to.
