- This is Ty Thompson, playing the Pipe Organ at the United States Naval Academy. This console is the Worlds Largest Drawknob console. Own quick arrangement, improv. of the Hymn.
I am 17 and also an organist. It is my main instrument (of 4) and it is very nice to know about people of such young age that realise how wonderful this instrument is!
I like this..... hail to the king ! this boy is trying to kill it - and praise to him
That organ has the biggest draw-knob panel I have ever seen on any organ!
This is beyond awesome! Both the organ itself, and Ty's playing are incredible!!!!
Howdy Ty:
You aren't a Cameron Carpenter........yet! He's nearly 10 years older than you and I marvel at what you might become by then. I have listened to this video so many times my family has threatened to disown me. You have an incredible talent and should continue to develop it. How I would love to be in that building to sing along with you as accompanist. All I can say is MORE VIDEOS, please!
Always,
Russ
The pipe organ is the most amazing instrument on the planet. God's own instrument.
I got tear in my eyes when i lisened to you.
I must have seen this 10 times by now, and i find myself with tears in my eyes every time i hear it.
The most amazing instrument in the world.
excellent, when can we expect more from you
What a sound!...again!...awesome you got an opportunity to play it! :)
I love this video and its audio despite the limitations of RUclips -- thank you!!
very nice! Put up a few more videos if you can. We'd like to hear more!
What a fabulous musician you are and what a great instrument! You certainly were having fun here and I truly enjoyed every note.
i think you are great. when are we going to see more?
Ty you are an amazing musician! WoW! I used to sing in the antiphonal choir (balcony) during my Plebe year at Canoe U.(US Naval Academy), and that hymn was a regular on the programing list as the processional. It never failed to stir my soul. Coffee with John Paul was an added bonus to being a choir member.
i love the little notes you put in your video! makes it so much more personal on the computer. :)
Ty, you are an awesome performer, I had too watch this clip twice, I thought it was "absolutely" marvelous!
-Levi
What I love about this video is that Ty is having fun and it's apparent (at least to me it is), and that's really important. Good job Ty, and continue to have fun and play as many organs as you can and PLEASE post more!
Mark
wow! I love the organ. Ty, the notes you added to the video really make it informative and more enjoyable. (if that's possible)
I wish you sold CD's of your playing! It was lovely. James McHone Harrisonburg Va. All the best... it was GREAT!!!!
Ty your awsome, everytime I hear this it puts a tear in my eye. Then I watch you changing registrations and im sitting here with a look of OMG ! Did he just do that? LOL. Love it.
Now THAT'S a whole lotta organ to be commanding there.
I hope you post more videos of you playing this particular organ. Really totally outstanding!! POST MORE!! :)
I borrowed your pedal line from the first system of the Hymn, really surprised the Congregation last week, NICE playing and great acoustics.
Holy Organ! That was amazing! I love how the organ roars over everything and the thuderous crash of thunder at the end! Someday I hope I will be able to play this organ :)
What a treat to hear this. Excellent playing. Even better would be to hear it in person. Best of all WOULD be to play it.
That is outrageous. The organ sounds similar to an organ I play in Sydney Town Hall. (Five manuals 8300 plus pipes one being a 64ft contra trombone). If you ever get to Australia come and give it a blast. Puritans will tell us that improvisation is wrong but as an organist you know that every instrument is different so you have to improvise from one organ to the next. Great job.
I would love to play this organ.
Amazing...I must make rounds to visit this and perchance play it one day. Personally I may have slowed down a slight bit, but that's up to each organist.
And THAT, my friends, is a truly magnificent pipe organ. Doesn't get much better than that.
all I know is one thing, that is one hell of an organ!
Outstanding job !!! Very impressive. I think the pipe organ should be played loudly, and you did just that. Keep up the great work.
Really nice. I'm not sure why the had do change a great instrument my adding digital stops.
very good ty ... the organ is wonderful !
That sure whipped my little subwoofer into submission!!!
I enjoyed each verse much more than the next.
Gosh I love this Organ. I have 3 manual Rodgers in which I love it replaced back in 2001 a 1954 Wicks 2 manual pipeorgan which we didn't have the funds to repalce it with so the next best option was a 3 manual Reodgers which as I have already stated I love dearly. I'd love the chance to play it!
WOW! very awesome, and that's one of my things on a bucket list is to play that organ!
WOW that was absolutely amazing! I wish I could hear that in person! You really know how to play, man
Fantastic playing!
I studied organ with a former organist at the Naval Academy Chapel, James Dale (R.I.P.) back in the late 1970s, when the organ had "only" about 80 ranks. Isn't the Cor de la Mer absolutely hair-raising! You should have heard it when it was first put in ... it was originally much louder and brighter than it is now; there were so many complaints about it that the Möller reed voicer was obliged to "tame it." Wonder what he would think of the organ as it is now!
WOW!!! that is a big organ!!!
I was one of the first to see you on here a few years ago. you now got over 112000 hits . thats mad. you have to put some more on here. you got ta get ya ass to sydney and play town hall and concert hall sydney opera house. both five man. Town hall has one of the two 64ft pipes on the planet. mad sound or more of a feeling than sound.
Great passion and performance. Thanks ! I wish i could have heard it in person. Do you have any more performances on youtube?
AWESOME job!!!!!! You play with ease and man I can barely get through chop sticks on a piano!!!!! Well done my friend! Any chance you have Eternal Father Strong to Save???? Would LOVE to see that on your play list..... Guy Sutton
More! Please post more videos of your playing!
I wouldn't mind seeing Ty perform on the Wanamaker, a magnificent instrument.
No, he wouldn't be the youngest to ever play the Wanamaker - a 16-year-old once played the William Tell Overture on it.
Due to mergers and acquisitions, the Wanamaker now resides (without physically moving) in the Macy's department store at 13th & Market Sts., Philadelphia PA 19107.
It's in the heart of the Center City downtown district.
you are amazing! post more please!
That was great!
You sir, are a VERY talented organist! I hope I can play that amazing organ sometime in my life!
Enlightened? Not on your life! I resent words of our beloved National Hymn being changed for any reason whatsoever. This is a marvelous performance. Too many stops for me... I could not choose.
Unreal! That is incredible. Congrats!
VERY WELL DONE!!! And, I get the joke in the sidebar; glad u have humor. ;)
You think the tune is? Ty, you play that like you invented that "tune" ... this vid just rocks. I so hope you'll upload more music at some point.
This organ is almost all digital!
that was one of the hottest thinsg ive seen in awhile. amazing!!!
This song is a childhood memory with two thousand people singing it with a 121 rank pipe organ. Oh, why did our wonderful church have to split?
Nice job on the playing BTW.
Good Lord, man was THAT AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
that was really great my favorite hymn
I bet you was in "Seventh Heaven" while playing in Full Organ mode. Keep up the good work. :)
Beautiful performance, Ty. Even being an organist and knowing how to operate the king of instruments (and machines), I would expect that a console of this magnitude can be incredibly intimidating. What was it like?
Huge sound....wowzers
Wonderful !!!
My favorite hymn along with o god our help... Beautiful organ! R.A. Colby? Right?
This is our National Hymn. Every American should know this song.
God of Our Fathers! Our National Hymn! How marvelous and wonferful! The politically correct version must fade into history as an oddity and a fad. God bless this young man.
Wow! What an incredible instrument! I really liked the hymn you played on this. You did a good job at bringing great melodic expression to it also with the various stops you used. How many ranks is this beauty?
Ty: Please post more videos. Where you normally play?
this definitely beats a set of speakers in terms of volume output wow! how many decibels' do you think he reached at the last chord? WOW!
Out of curiosity how many stops is that? Btw I love the this one is up there in the ranks as well pun. =]
I doubt it was intended at you Ty, you rock.
Ty
Were you a cadet there also? BRAVO
Awesome--great!!
Would the piece your playing be titled, "The Light Eternal?" If so, I played that same piece in my high school band. Absolutely beautiful piece; brings tears to the eye, and sends chills throughout your soul.
Bravo! Job well done!
compliments
Ty, could you tell me where I can get that exact version of the piece? I just love the pedal line.
my god I bet that bad boy sounds awesome in person!! How many ranks?
please go back to this organ and play some more and play some of the fast minor and wilide creepy scary frightnning chords. some fellas i know you've heard doo the where the fill the air with wild crashing harmony. that all right if you make a few mistakes but just thrill of see tou do this. i like to see you tackle the giant classical organ ,more more more thank mannnnnnnh
Try it with bifocals...I gave up and just play by ear or from memory.
This is all very impressive, but I have A small question:if the organ is indeed so loud, could the organist bare it, I do not see them waring a muffs or any thing of that property.
Smells, sights, and sounds all bring back memories like it happened a minute ago. This song reminds me of all those years at vacation bible school. I never understood why a guild organist chose this selection for us kids to sing being that its rather complicated. Of course now, the VBS songs are for 2008 are mostly Beach Boys rip offs as the theme is Outrigger Island, another rip off of Survivor once again!
lol, the man!
Is this organ really now mainly digital rather than pipe? If so are the rude comments about it on the "Toccata in D Minor at the US Naval Academy" video justified? On the full organ sound, it doesn't sound as though it's all in tune but this might be a problem with RUclips sound quality.
I think I agree. I am not a fan of digital pipes, but I just love this organ anyway. And I prefer drawknobs instead of stop tabs :)
Woah...
Wow. If you can play this kind of instrument, then surely can fly a 747 Jumbo jet.
Yes, awesome!
This has been a favorite hymn of mine since "kidhood" (which was way too long ago!)
I have always known this hymn as "God of our Fathers". But political "correctness" has caused a name change to "God of the Ages" in "enlightened" hymnbooks.
So what does the 'real deal' look like if this isn't the 'real'deal?
Bravo Ty
Splendide interprétation ! Magnifique console!
The pipes are missing ... where are the pipes ?
Sorry for my bad english
So where does all the air come from
@organdude8990: Funny how just one, little letter can change entire meaning of an innocent sentence. Nice catch, organdude! I hope brb21592 enjoyed your comment, too. It was funny. What a monstrous drawknob console. Anyone know who built the organ, and is there a stop list for it somewhere?
@Thepianoorganist You look up with your eyes while keeping your neck straight as possible.
wish you could teach me im taking organ in college
Love the hymn! THAT should be our national anthem,,but it would piss off the non-Christians..oh well...just a tought...Love that organ too!!! :)
Interesting that big one..
How much registers?
@Thepianoorganist Why? The music is adjusted to be exactly at eye level.
@Thepianoorganist Speaking from practical experience, that's what bifocals and trifocals were invented for. LOL
I think that if Ty was to play like this for a sanctuary full of atheists, he would have them all converted to Christians after he was done!!!
Sean
Really great instrument but I feel like having digital stops takes something away from it- it makes it seem less real to me. but that's just my opinion.
Did u you use the Cor de La Mer ?
That is why it pays to MEMORIZE!!!!
