Year 2001, somewhere in Ohio, the 4-th of July open air concert... the Conductor announces: "Don't ask me why we perform Russian composer Piotr Tchaikovsky on the 4-th of July...I don't know why"... and the final (real) cannons mixed with thunderstorm, lightnings and heavy rain in the dark... everyone left totally wet and impressed.

In memory of the fact that the US declared war on Great Britain in 1812 hoping to take advantage the British involvement in the Napoleonic War to take over Canada. Unfortunately for them they only managed to fight a losing draw that time as the Brits/Canadians pulled back after sacking Washington DC and burning down the White house and conquering the northern shore of Lake Erie almost to Detroit. The French were unable to come and help the US win unlike 35 years earlier.

Way back in the early 90s I was an artilleryman stationed at Ft Stewart GA, and my unit (A battery 13th field artillery) was “salute battery” for the 24th infantry division (mechanized.) The gun crews provided cannon fire from 75mm pack howitzers for military ceremonies, parades, and other functions, and in either 1991 or 92 they fired for the Savannah Symphony’s July 4th performance of the 1812 Overture. Looking back, I wish I’d been part of a gun crew at least once.

If this is to your liking there is another massively extravagant piece written for a celebration of a French loss in 1812.
    Wellington's Victory by Beethoven.
As written it has an expanded orchestra, two brass bands, cannon and muskets. If you listen with headphones it starts with a drummer marching in one ear and out the other.
