    The Action button would have been really nice if they allowed DIFFERENT ACTIONS for different presses, for example - long press for Silence mode, double tap for the Flashlight, single tap for the Camera app.
    This would actually increase the functionality of the button, instead of just making it slightly more difficult to use for the current purpose - discretely switch to silent mode, while you're in an important meeting at work and suddenly remember you forgot to do that.

    I think I get why they made the action button customizable. I've never in my life toggled the old mute button because I just want to stay in the silent mode, so that button was pretty useless to me. Now that button is repurposed to be customizable, which is definitely going to make it much more useful and I believe I'm not the only one that feels this way.

    • @markonikolic7957
      @markonikolic7957 8 месяцев назад +87

      They made it mostly for the sake of change so that consumers don't complain that it's "the same phone". They still complain just to a lesser extent and rightfully so. Even with this it's hard to sell it to a lot of people as something new. Ok titanium frame cool but do people really care about that? Most of us put a case the first week we get a phone and never touch that titanium anyway. It literally looks the same design wise. USB C they were forced into it and wouldn't even do it in the first place if not for the EU. And even then it's really nothing special as charging speeds have remained pretty much the same as with lightning.

    • @243300000
      @243300000 8 месяцев назад +30

      I like it because it opens up the possibility in the future to mute your phone for a specific amount of time. I do NOT like having my phone in silent mode but do use it very occasionally (like if I'm at the movies). I'd love to be able to set my phone to mute for the next 3 hours, and that is now possible since the mute state no longer needs to stay in sync with a physical switch.

    • @coco7620
      @coco7620 8 месяцев назад

      Well, at least this one has a valid functional purpose. The smartphone development is at a point that there isn't too many innovations you can do given the current form factor. Before the actual breakthrough it's ok to see these incremental changes for a few years. For the people complaining about iPhones looking the same, I literally can't tell the difference between S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra.@@markonikolic7957

    Apple really needs to update iOS's camera app. It's a mess right now, specially with all the new pro features. I think with Focus modes being so smart in that they can be automatically activated based on your GPS location, time of day, calendar events etc. we don't really need a mute switch any more. I do however think that Apple missed a huge opportunity to give the button 3 functions (click, double click, hold). The power button can do 3 things (4 if you include emergency SOS) so why not allow the same level of functionality on the fancy new Action Button? Huge miss..... but I still think it's an upgrade over a mute switch. I will set it to camera and be done with it.

    Maybe Apple has applied some kind of coating to prevent scratches but typically titanium is far less scratch resistant than other metals like steel and aluminum. This is because the surface oxidizes with the air making it patina. Thus, when you scratch it the layers under the surface appear and stand out a lot more

    • @terriplays1726
      @terriplays1726 8 месяцев назад +21

      I have recently went down the rabbit hole of steel v titanium, mainly for bicycles and what I got is that Titanium used to be the best material vs weight; but with innovation is a lot os steel alloys, it’s become less less.
      You’ll find that there are steel alloys that are stronger than titanium alloys. Titanium in the 80s had the benefit of plane manufacturing and so research was poured quite significantly into that, until the arrival of Carbon Fibre.
      Nutshell: steel was better, steel is better now as well

      I think the reason that happened is because they reused the A16 for the iPhone 15, which didn’t have a usb3 controller on the chip. But I’d be willing to bet that, assuming they don’t go a year with the same chip like they did from iPhone 13->14, the “A17” in the iPhone 16 will be a binned down A17 Pro with some of the gpu/cpu cores disabled. I don’t know what TSMC’s yield rate is with the 3nm manufacturing process, but it’s still pretty new tech. The failure rate could be high, leaving Apple sitting on a bunch of otherwise unusable silicon. In that scenario, the iPhone 16 would support usb 3 transfer speeds most likely

Do you think that they'll wait to actually release the M3 chipset when they can use the N3E node starting next year (obviously for the different computing devices) or do an Oct/Nov event and have it on the N3B node still? If they did the later, who thinks the M3 pro and max chips would be using the N3E format since this node would be available early next year?

    Here’s an interesting question: do you guys think that the adoption of USB-C combined with the other new features in the iPhone 15 will increase Apple’s market share, and if so, will this increase adequately offset the foregone revenue from seller’s fees that they were earning from the marketplace of lightning accessories?

    I really like this year's Pro phones. Spent a year trying a Pro Max phone again, and I've hated it in comparison and have been counting down the days until I could go back to the normal size. To have all the little remaining annoyances sorted at the same time (lighter weight, better contours for less digging into the hands, better frame to fix fingerprint staining, USB-C, etc.) is awesome. Thing with the Action Button is (and I want to comfortably say this is similar to a lot of users), most people set their ring/mute status once and basically never touch that button again. I always have mine on mute, and the rare cases I just can't miss a call, it's one swipe to turn it back on. Already way used to it for years on iPad too. However, I would have loved to have seen the button sit under the volume buttons towards the middle, avoid the hand gymnastics to reach it and all. I'm sure they wanted familiarity in the design, but I think they could have done it.
    There's some really particular details people investing into that USB 3 port on the Pro should really know. For one, it actually more directly supports the USB 3.1 Gen 2 protocol, so while it is artificially limited on charging to 27W, the transfer speeds can go to a nice 10Gbit/s. However, the important thing to note (and Apple really doesn't mention this anywhere easily, I had to dig into their support site) is that the cable Apple provides in box for the Pro only supports USB 2 speeds. If you want this speed, you have to find your own cable to do that. I really think Apple should have provided a cable that supports that 3.1 Gen 2 protocol for the Pro models, especially if they're touting this as a Pro feature. They're not exactly expensive, I just expect this to start making headlines when customers start receiving them and getting dreadful old Lightning speeds from their new "Pro" cable.

    With quick buttons on the screen, I've got muscle memory for the flashlight and the camera and can activate either before fully pulling my phone out of my pocket. I do actually prefer a mute switch. When I'm working (working from home) I'll get simultaneous notifications, on my computer and on my phone. I mute my phone so I don't have to hear both at the same time, but if I step away for a break I don't want to miss anything, so I flip the switch real quick when I'm away. I also flip the switch through my pants while it's in my pocket if I get a notification and forget to turn it off. I'm sure I'll be able to do that with the action button, it will just take a moment to adjust. Like another tech youtuber mentioned, why not program long presses and multi-presses to other buttons on the phone? It seems more functional and less functional at the time.

We are at the point where manufacturers struggle to find meaningful changes every year thats gets a person who owns last years model upgrade. Just wait 3-4 years and it will always be worth it getting the new one. No matter who the manufacturer is.

      That's generally true, except Apple purposefully withholds useful features from their consumers so they can milk 'improvements' for several years to come. Honestly smart thinking from Apple, they realized the only things most of their users care for at this point is the status symbol of having an iPhone as well as the software, so they can just stay a generation or two behind the competition in order to maintain the image of having 'major upgrades ' every year.

    USB 3… only took them 10 years longer than the first Android phone to implement (Galaxy Note 3). That said, AirDrop is about 1Gbps measured between my iPad Mini and MacBook so that has always been the go-to rather than the USB cable. Apple knew this, and it’s just another of those ecosystem things that keep us locked in despite the silly things Apple does.

The only thing it can't do is trigger custom actions which would be awesome if Google could actually be more creative and add that ability in.

    TSMC 3nm is going to be fast, but I think only in a marketing "next generation lithography development" way. I don't think TSMC 3nm is yet using any new GAAFET transistor layout.
    I think Samsung 3nm is GAAFET, but their transistor density is still way lower, forcing them to run at hotter/faster clocks to keep up, so we'll see what happens there.

      Yes was really debating to wait for the 16 since it seems to come with a hole punch instead of dynamic island but a hole punch seems less useful than the island although it’s smaller. The rumor is that the 18 will get under display camera and that means i can keep the 15 for three years which i think is a reasonable time nowadays. I used to say every two years is worth an upgrade but that was back when they did the S models and a big design change every two years. Nowadays all models pretty much look the same since the 12 so it’s harder to justify even though the internals and display got a lot of changes
