Being an Indian this is hard as well as embarrassing to watch. But this is a very real part of IT sector in India. My cousin brother once unknowingly interviewed for this job. Once he knew what was up he refused the offer. I remember him explaining it to me what other things happened there; his accent was checked, good and proper accent is crucial. Learning a script, it's like having a completely different identity on the job. Mock calling during the interview etc. The main reason most of the youth end doing these kind of job is because the pay is really good (at least for the Indian standards). I think the western media should bring this issue into light, so more people become aware about this situation and don't fall prey to such scams.

This is actually the first step of probing the victim. Similarly to the Nigerian prince scams, where the email contains grammatical errors the scammer wants to see if the victim is naive enough to pass all that by and still make the call. In summary, if they bought that Microsoft is going under, changes are that they will buy that they have to pay more money to get a refund. It's a weeding out process.

A lot of times they will edit an account that looks like your official bank account, and they’ll set the values to a number so insane you pretty much enter panic mode.
