As a few others in the chat have already mentioned, this is an insightful video which gives us a good idea of what traditional karate really is. Really appreciated the fact that he was very direct in his explanation.
Dios lo bendiga y le alargue los años para que siga trasmitiendo ese valioso conocimiento exelente técnica velocidad bloqueo y poder mis mas sinceros respetos gran amigo
I agree, I think if you have the right mindset, because is truly for a self-defense and not attacking, then not losing really is a win. Only those who have a big ego, or desperate would see the need for attacking.
I have enjoyed all your uploads. However I find this one the most insightful, moving and in some ways very sad, hearing about his illness. What a great master, and wonderful human being this man is!
I really enjoy these series, the history, concepts, explanation, really helps the viewer keep connected with what Okinawan Karate really stands for. Keep them coming!
Wow - great video and beautifully produced. Chris Willson is a master. When I first met Nakasone Sensei, he was a beast and Kumite Champion. It is great to hear and see the evolution of his karate. I absolutely love his instruction beyond mere kata. His respect for Iha Sensei is moving. Totally inspired to go move and feel the energy flow.
Dear Master Koichi Nakasone, My deepest appreciation for the overview of Your way of Karate, especially with regards to how one can find understanding of Karate going back to the roots. Linking Kobudo is another good aspect especially when engaged in defence against attackers using poles, clubs or even knives. Good health and Many, many thanks! Paul, retired instructor of Karate.
wow by watching this entire video I hope people will feel what i felt. Its some how some kind of peace surrounding hes whole character. Hard to explain but I got happy by listening to him. Awesome guy!
Toujours passionant.
This master is super progressive, love it! He makes the same critiques about the kata as Bruce Lee, as a karate practitioner this is very motivating to keep coming up with new moves.
Thanks for all the videos! I can't stop watching and listening to all sensei interviews who devoted their life in martial art, beautiful and fascinating.
As it moved away from the source , like most things , Okinawan karate got distorted and watered down. But at it's heart it's a compact , powerful , close range self defense system . There's a lot of standing grappling , trips, sweeps, throws and clinch work . I was lucky to meet a Goju practitioner in Washington state (US) that traveled often to Okinawa . He would perform Sanchin kata, or Tsuken no eku at local Karate tournaments and ironically always lose because the judges had no idea what the were looking at They were only used to the more popular acrobatic sports forms like you see in the Karate Kid movies . I certainly didn't master Sanchin , but between practicing it and building a proper makiwara board (not just a pad on the wall) I learned a LOT about structure and kinetic chain for short, explosive power .
Thank you for these beautiful series of videos. Such a perfect example that there is no such thing as a master or to master, except the self proclaimed, arrogant, jealous and narcissists. Real mastery means dedication, focus, wisdom and humility to learn. These Sensei don’t speak shit, they speak humbly, truthfully and with true knowledge and wisdom.
Thank you for all the positive comments. We're about to start filming Series Two, and need help from the international martial arts community to do it. Learn how you can become a supporter or sponsor in the video description.
stepping forward to slight angle is from hsing-i. Slight angle to slip their attack, forward to confuse their distance. When they move forward dont back up.
A slight body shift can change everything. Power. Strength. Speed. EVERYTHING. Which brings me to my GRIPE. All of my MASTERS/SIFUS didn’t teach me this technique until I MASTERED. “It kinda pissed me off. Because if they had taught me that in the beginning, I would have mastered FASTER. Now, years later... I understand. Master form then technique. Then, PERFECT. Awesomeness!
the pure beauty, honesty and old school wisdom that can be gained from these ,actual real traditional karate ka ,is unreplaceable ,roided up ,glory hole haters, step back !you might learn ! basic respect cost nothing!
There is not a single man in this serie that i don't like. Anybody who trained physically that hard in their life will always have a good heart because they have endured and have learned the limitation of the physical body.
Well done. Respect to Master Koichi Nakasone. Traditional karate, or martial arts, must never die and must be preserved for many generations. Just like classical ateliers art can never die and be passed on from master to student despite the contemporary world of today.
all those terms he was using are very rare: unless you can go okinawa and find a teacher of the old ways, you would never know that they exist in karate. same with the adaptation of the techniques that he demonstrated. imperative that this knowledge gets passed on. i liked how he balanced his ti studies with kumite. only wished i had seen some of their kumite training.
My first Sensei (in Okinawa) was also Shugoro Nakazato. I was with him in 74,75 and part of 1976. I'm 4 years younger, but I'd bet money I spent time with this man at the dojo. I have some decent pictures still if anyone is interested.
The grandmaster is getting older & I hope that you can find them & documenting their words & techniques. It's like an archive & history regardless any martial arts.
there was a time when these applications weren't taught to foreigners. and many died with the masters. the majority of karate students were only taught punch, kick, block in many variations but it's clear that there are plenty of jujitsu grabs, throws, and locks in the katas if we know where to look. unless shown the application, it's extremely difficult to visualize what is within a kata. now it starts to look much closer to its Chinese boxing roots.

Beautiful video, so insightful and inspiring. Excellent work, thank you so much for your dedication to capture the 'wise' of the traditonal martial arts.
Nagasone and Iha senseis once had an altercation behind closed doors. When they emerged they were silent. Later a brave student asked Nakasone sensei what had transpired in that room, his only remark was "I still have a lot to learn." They remain great friends to this day.
Merrick : Nagasone Sensei said Iha Sensei kept him off balance the entire time. From that time forward, Nagasone Sensei dedicated himself to the teachings of Iha Sensei.
I met sensei in the 90’s. He drove us around one day and drove so fast nearly hitting power poles and he kept smiling and laughing 😂. I almost shit in my pants. I was there to visiting Miyahira sensei or to test. I don’t remember…(shorin ryu shidokan)

I am loving this series as a traditional martial artist and teacher of the traditional martial arts this feeds my soul fire
Dios lo bendiga y le alargue los años para que siga trasmitiendo ese valioso conocimiento exelente técnica velocidad bloqueo y poder mis mas sinceros respetos gran amigo
I really like it when I hear them speak of not being concerned with winning but just not losing. I think that is key.
I agree, I think if you have the right mindset, because is truly for a self-defense and not attacking, then not losing really is a win. Only those who have a big ego, or desperate would see the need for attacking.

My sensei showed me the same things about Pinan Shodan the other night in class. Great series. Another great interview.
Thank you very much for this great documentary film. Osu.
Truly on another level as a human being , what a different world it would be if we could all develop that attitude in our lives .
Thank you!
So much attitude in that thumbnail
I love it
The front wheel is Karate, the rear wheel kobudo. Beautiful presentation. Thank you for sharing.

It's very good that someone took the time and filmed the Okinawan masters. It would be a shame to see this knowledge lost.
Honors to Mr. Koichi
You do not want to try and mess with James in a fight holy crap he's huge 😂
Also thanks a lot for the video that was captivating
Thank you...that was great!

Good work, really good work❗ These senseis are old, muz document all these before they are gone so the knowledge and experiences can be passed on.

Please make a documentary on Seikichi Iha Sensei 🙏🏾👊🏾

From what Nagasone Sensei says, it was a sparring session.

Mash-taaaahhh!
I met sensei in the 90’s. He drove us around one day and drove so fast nearly hitting power poles and he kept smiling and laughing 😂. I almost shit in my pants. I was there to visiting Miyahira sensei or to test. I don’t remember…(shorin ryu shidokan)
