Starfield -- Not a Space Sim, but Still a Bethesda Game

  • It probably shouldn't have surprised anyone that Bethesda made a Bethesda-like game despite all those years and delays. But there's nothing really wrong with the formula. The engine may look like two butts glued together and run just as well as one, but at least it lets people do mods that fix all of the broken parts.

    I didn't mention that this has a dang good soundtrack and Jeremy Soule sucks now so I guess it all worked out.

    300 years into the future and... no cell phones. You sometimes have to fast travel so that a character can drop literally two lines before you can go back to the planet you came from. Classic Bethesda stuff, you hate or you somewhat love it. Spent close to 100 hours on this game and perfected it, was a nice run and I'm sure it will unlock indeed its potential in the future with a combination of mods and DLCs perhaps.

      And don't forget the data pads that are apparently used throughout the galaxy to store 1/10000th of the data that could be stored on a 1980s floppy disk. They apparently function as the world's most expensive and least sticky Post-It-Notes.

      Funny thing being that with Quantum Entaglement FTL comunication is almost a thing with very little energy requirements, compared to FTL travel.

    While the review covers some of Starfield's issues, it is far too soft in its critique of this lackluster game. Allow me to elaborate on all of its shortcomings:
    The developers promised cutting-edge space exploration but delivered only a bland assortment of procedurally-generated planets devoid of life. Don't be fooled by their flashy pre-release trailers - on foot, traversing these sterile worlds is a chore, not a joy.
    Landing your ship grants no sense of accomplishment, as you're unable to pilot it between destinations. The ability to build your own vessel is meaningless when it acts only as a menu icon. Where is the immersion Bethesda claims to provide?
    Combat remains their weakest element, with absurdly easy enemies and a meager selection of generic weapons. Melee is an outright afterthought, consisting of boring hack-and-slash with no advanced techniques. This game is no substitute for the rich systems of Fallout or TES.
    Cities fail to feel alive, populated mostly by soulless clones repeating bland loops. Don't be fooled by New Atlantis's vast scale - its size only dilutes attention to detail. Character models are last-gen quality, displaying minimal expression or uniqueness.
    The main quest does nothing to motivate exploration, relying on predictable fetch tasks strung between loading screens. Story and characters leave no lasting impact. This is no Skyrim in space - it's a half-baked imitation lacking care, passion, or technical prowess in open worlds.
    Fans deserve better than Bethesda's lazy rehash phoned in on dated technology. If you wish to experience true next-gen roleplaying, spend your money and time more wisely elsewhere. Starfield is a colossal misstep that only the blindest fanboy could see as anything but a disappointment.

      The level of blind defense from Bethesda fanboys for this abomination of a game blows me away. These people would swear up and down that this shit sandwich is a five-course gourmet meal if it meant justifying their pre-order to themselves.
      The excuses they make for Starfield's pathetic excuse for exploration just prove how deluded they are. Rather than admit Bethesda phoned this one in, they'll tell you empty, monotonous planets filled with nothing to do is actually "good!" Try not to laugh as they die on that hill.
      These stans are in such deep denial that they've convinced themselves things that are objectively flaws - like freaking loading screens between minor locations - are actually positive features. It's like a weird cult at this point.
      You'll see them attacking any actual criticism as "trolling" or "being too harsh." God forbid we hold a billion-dollar company to higher standards than what amounts to a forgettable mod for Skyrim.
      At least Bethesda knows they've got a loyal army of apologists to deflect any criticism of their low-effort schlock. Why bother putting in real effort and innovation when Fanboy #1 will insisting it's a flawless masterpiece no matter how shallow it truly is?
      If these fanboys had even an ounce of self-respect they'd admit when Bethesda clearly phoned one in instead of parroting every PR lie. But they'd rather die on the hill of "Starfield good!" than admit they wasted $60. Pathetic display, but great for laughs.

    300 years into the future, and somehow human culture largely remains the same. Or maybe it goes in cycles, like how 80s aesthetics came back; the hairdressers of 2330 really dig the 2020 look.

    Starfield was good enough for me to put 110hrs into it. But i give it a 6/10. It needs a No Mans Sky redemption arc of big updates and good mods to make it the game i was hoping for.

    Sorry for the long question, hehe

    • @AbbreviatedReviews
      @AbbreviatedReviews  Год назад +2

      Most likely. It has a lot of the same flow of the story and quest lines like Skyrim and would be easy to pick up from a character interaction standpoint. However, you also have to be competent at FPS as there's no real way around that. And the exploration aspect of Skyrim pretty much isn't here, so if they were a big fan of just wandering around a forest and discovering something interesting, you can't really replicate that.

    • @VashdaCrash
      @VashdaCrash Год назад +1

      @@AbbreviatedReviews Thank you very much! For the video, too... I think I won't recommend it then, I don't think he's any good at FPS and the exploration is a big part of what he likes about it.

      @@VashdaCrashprobably one of the few exams of a person I would say one could recommend this game but there is one caveat. If the draw they had to skyrim was the world or the exploration then no. Starfields world isn't quite as charming. And it has little to no exploration as the majority of it is done via menu navigation besides in the major cities. Hope that helps.

    • @VashdaCrash

      @Ashamedofmypast Год назад

      @@VashdaCrash I've had a few friends who enjoyed skyrim for those reasons and all of them loved dragons dogma once I recommended it. The world isn't quite so vast but the sense of exploration is strong and the progression options allow for a strong sense of growth in abilities.
      Its quite cheap and on all platforms so perhaps that is an option?
