I thought I was going crazy trying to nail the Crazy Train solo and then I panned the track hard left and right and realized he was playing slightly different notes in each ear. Made a video about it that got a good amount of attention and it made me happy that after all these years we're still learning about the details of Randy that made him great.
Are you the guy who gives 100 bucks to Kyle dunnigan all the time? At home with Stallone is hilarious.
Randy is the GOAT. I still play his riffs today. Iconic talent that will live through the ages
this is why Max is an all time legend, he refused to participate in the re-recording of those two masterpieces that Darth Hideous ordered to screw Bob and Lee
That woman is the worst. Bob & Lee were as big a part of those albums as Randy.
We just got the confirmation to what we already knew. Randy was and is a guitar GOD.
Truly a legend in his time, I saw him twice, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman and what I saw and heard were spectacular, RIP 🙏 Randy!
good on you max norman - for having integrity and respect
of course, he put aside the threats Darth Hideous made.....Tommy Aldrdige also 20 years earlier refused to redo Lee's parts.
I don’t care what anybody says,Blizzard and Diary sound amazing…Randy’s guitar tone just fit perfectly with those songs, and Max Norman really captured the magic of those performances….
Imagine playing like that and composing and his age. I've played all styles . Rhandy Rhoads is just bliss

Full, you’re so damn good interviewing these guys, asking great freaking questions, and then sitting quiet and letting them talk. Thanks man. Enjoy your content
I appreciate you, Leo. Thank you!
Max Norman always does great interviews and has great stories.
Great Informative interview. Rhoads Daisley and Kerslake forever.
Those guys are legends.
I'm still amazed to this day that Randy's solos were double tracked and triple tracked! Yet it still sounds like one guitar on the final recording. That's so incredible when you take into consideration the speed, all the bends, whammy bar, hammer on's and pull off's in every solo.
im not amazed. he was a true professional and being a music teacher helped him a lot.
Yes, what I always thought. I like doing interesting fast key solos with Moog type sounds with similar bends, intonations, etc.. The thought of playing over all those slight but precious imperfections is daunting.
A genius working with a genius.
Randy made the tone and key of the song fit what Ozzy could sing. Randy deserves every accolade he receives. RIP Randy.
The 2002 rerecordings of Blizzard and Diary show the depths of the greed of the Osbournes... Ozzy has to take some blame too, not just Sharon. But I still don't understand what possessed Trujillo and Bordin to take part in this fiasco. You might say, it was the Ultimate Sin.
👍
At the time, they were just working musicians (Robert is now a Metallica Millionaire), and there was a lot of money on the table to make those new versions.
Ozzy and Sharon are arguably the slimiest operators in the history or rock.
@@WhyTheHorseface-- I think there are certain lines you do not cross. This was one of them. Also, if they were willing to pay these guys a lot of money, which I doubt (do you know how much?), they might as well have just paid Daisley and Kerslake what they had coming to them.
Thank you for posting this. Ive actually been trying to keep my comments on YT more upbeat lately but I stand firm on calling BULLSHIT on this move. Those recordings showcase a Golden Era for TRUE Heavy Metal. You had to have SOLID musicianship, songs and a LEGIT singer in those days. At 45 i just cant get i to death metal or whatevers new but late 70’s early 80s had to fight the system against Punk to be recognized
Dam,I Miss That Guys Music..What a Talent..RIP Randy🤘🖤🎸💯
Randy will always be my favorite guitarist. Keep his music pure.
I can still recall x-act lee where I was
who I was with
and sitting in a circle surrounded by four large speakers.
I eventually learned both albums on my guitar and played along with Randy whenever I could.
It made my young life very enjoyable.
God Bless RR
thanx for the interview,....Randy will always be relative, the proof is the amount of views and comments after only a few days,.....I Love Randys work,...such a loss in March 1982, thank goodness we have the recordings.
Thanks for listening, David!
An honest man with integrity looking to preserve his art and hard work.
Oh WoW! Thank you so much for this cool AF interview about my FAVORITE guitarist!! RANDY RHOADS!! Norman sure knows what he's talking about! So awesome with his craft! Great banter between you guys as usual! I love your channel! It is now my fave! I am thrilled to the bone hearing this interview! I'm so glad Max stuck to his guns. You can't top the best, and it's a shame they "tried" to replace 2 original geniuses. Goes to show that you really can't kill ROCK N ROLL!! 🤘
FLY FREE RANDY~~~😇

Thank you, Tracy.
Very cool. Seems like everyone is remixing their old stuff to get publishing because they signed away their life when they got a deal with a record company. Can't blame them, but he's correct about over dubbing. It's not the same as everyone basically playing live because doing it live gives it that excitement and originality.
RRs was a god . Just such a good guy and rock star. He was the rock star that didn't try to be a rock star, but instead just loves the instrument and music in general. He for sure saved Ozzy's career. ♥️🤘♥️
Musicians have been getting burned for decades… maybe even centuries
I don't believe remastering has anything to do with publishing. It's just a way to get people to buy something they already bought thinking it's going to be cleaner and sonically superior. Sometimes they do an excellent job and sometimes they do a hatchet job
Max makes a great point on overdubs and musical conversations.
Listening to the original Jet Records versions as a kid was like a religious experience for us. It's sacred. You don't fuck with it. Period.
Ozzy doesn’t take a bathroom break without asking Sharon, don’t kid yourself. It’s a Jada/Will Smith situation
Amazing. That guy is Really good at what he does. Those 2 Albums are Masterpieces and shouldn't have ever been messed with. Bob was a HUGE part of those albums and he deserves to get the Accolades and Money for it. He wrote all the lyrics for both of those albums and sat there with Randy creating those Songs. It was a Crappy thing for Sharon to do to cut his parts out and have someone else play it so they wouldn't have to pay him for it. I Certainly would never want the "Redone" Albums that don't have the original guys on it. Bless this Guy for holding his ground and not agreeing to do it.
I actually went and bought both of those on CD the day they came out excited that it was a full remaster supposedly. Within a few minutes, I could tell it wasn't the original recordings. I was pissed
@@robertparker481 wow no kidding! Was pretty easy to tell huh!?
@@mrk4510 I knew that album beat by beat note for note and the slightest little discrepancy stuck out.

Max is always a fantastic interview, and producer and engineer. Brilliant guy. Thank you!
I remember buying those CDs not knowing they re-engineered it.
After listening, something did not sound right and had a flatter tone to the originals. So in this younger days of the internet I looked up the situation and found out they stripped Kerslake and Daisley out. It was marketed as a "remaster" which usually is the bit oversampling and cleaned up from the master analog tapes. So it was sketchy advertising at best. But as usual it was Sharon's plan. .........................Have not listened to those 2002 reissues since.
She wanted to ensure kerslakr and daisley were cut out of any future royalties. It all happened when the 2 started trying to claim royalties because they did in fact help write the songs. Total greed by Sharon.
@@SECURITY39 Yeah K&D were session guys for the most part, but they knew songcraft and worked with various producers. Randy was new to the scene and even though he was with QR, the OZZY gig was extreme pressure on a new level on the 23 year old guitarist. The first album had to be a splash success. Even though Ozzy biting off that doves head almost derailed the album being released with Epic. Sharon begged forgiveness and Epic made her sweat it out, they were going to release that album no matter what.
they're awful, and they did that hatchet job to Bark at the Moon as well. Luckily, the 95 remasters which are in many ways superior are still available on the used market
Same thing happened to us. After listening a few minutes, especially at the end of Crazy Train, it was obviously different so I examined the CD packaging to find out what they did. At the time I was active on the Ozzfest forums and laid out a scathing review that got a reply from someone higher up, that included an apology, explaining it was being taken off the market because of the flood of complaints.

Excellent interview..
Wow what a surprise... Sharon Osbourne acting like a little child because she didn't get someone to jump through hoops. I am so happy her idea of erasing Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake blew up in her face. The remixed Blizzard and Diary were a complete disaster!!!
Max Norman speaks words of wisdom in this interview!
Randy was a gem of a musician and human being....
Always good interviews here good job you do friend.
Thanks for listening, Tim.
he valued "the performance aspect of the solo" that is one of the many reasons he is an all time A leaguer
What great insights regarding the "conversation" that occurs when musicians play live on a recording session, there is no way to reproduce that. The re-recording was doomed to fail; English rock drummers are famous for playing behind the beat, it's one of those things that was sought out about them. As Max astutely pointed out, Randy's playing on top of the beat is what gave those songs tension and excitement and having replacement musicians play to his time ruins the dynamics of those songs. Great interview!
Thanks for another interesting video 👍🏻
This is a great conversation regarding musicians playing off each other. In the pro world it was a big part of why certain records sounded so good. As a part-time musician overdub tracking is essential and I make sure that I'm inspired by the tracks I accompany so we can capture that "band" sound.
What a great perspective.
Amazing dialog
Once I learned the bass and drums were re-recorded I tossed those right in the trash. Now I know why they sounded off at the time.
Thanks Max
And this is how Randy Rhoads taught me more than anything else how 2 freestyle the magic that comes out of improvisation
Thank you
Excellent cogent analysis
The production on Diary is much better IMO
Kind of a funny interview I saw with Ozzy concerning the production of Diary. So basically all the instrument and vocals were complete, and Max Norman told the guys ok, I’ll take it from here and I’ll let you know when the mastering is complete. Well when Ozzy first heard the completed songs he asked Max “What the f*$k is this?! And Max said hey Ozzy, trust me. This is the direction that Heavy Metal and Rock is going. I guess Ozzy had never heard production that good lol. He agrees with Max and wow did it pay off big time.
clearly Max had an ear....and Ozzy hardly participated on that album. He was passed out, Lee having do vocal melodies and demoes
Funny, the original drummer for Quiet Riot (Forsyth) used to say that Randy played ahead of him and the bass player would follow Randy.
Always got the feeling his solos were thought out all the way through before hand. You know. Like a composer
Triplet racked? wow ? My now deceased guitar teacher said after listening to this record, "This engineer is a genius" REISSUE WAS SHAMEFUL. i have horrible ears and I could tell it was shit right away. Priceless info thanx.
Glad I don't have the 2002 remasters. I have the original copies of the first 2 albums on vinyl and they sound great.
Very interesting
Fortunately, both of those original albums are still available on streaming services, before they screwed them up on the remasters.

Sharing is caring bro 🤘
max norman is 100% correct about that reissue feeling wrong
Max is a genius
the reissued album without bob and lees part is absolutely tragic, cant stand listening to it.
There’s some guitarist on RUclips that copies his solos with perfection.
To watch the guy playing closeup - you see that magic and thrill of Randy’s style.
no he doesn't no one does, it is in the hands, none of the greats can be copied, people playing someone notes perfectly does not mean they play the song the same way......

aside of going for an effect or maybe a harmony, not a fan of multi-tracking leads. i think it tends to average out all the nuances you can impart.
The mix on those first two albums sounded flat. Those are due for a remaster. (Note:. NOT a re-mix)
Randy became my Favorite guitarist the very first time I heard the Blizzard album in '81 when it was brand new. The first time i had the chance to see him was the Diary tour, until fate stepped in and changed music as we know it. Cried like a baby that day. Everyone said Brad Gillis did a great job, but Randy is just unreplaceable imo... like trying to replace EVH. Can't be done. Randy could have played with anyone... I'm starting to ramble I guess. God bless Randy Rhoads!
Nobody tried to replace Randy. But life goes on...next man up. Harsh but true
Bernie and Brad did admirable jobs...but they are not Randy rhoads
Randy wasn't happy with Ozzy anyways, I doubt he would have recorded another album with him. Rumor was, as he told Ozzy was that he wanted to play classical guitar more, and teach etc, but i'm pretty sure Sharon wasn't going to take care of him anyway which he knew. Ozzys guilt also was obvious. I'm sure they were paying him peanuts like everyone else. Randy helped write the first two records. Something like 7 million copies sold of both. He was and would be owed millions.
Yeah nah ! Randy did not write the first two albums ! Bob Daisley was THE biggest contributor to writing those songs on the first two albums !
But in all fairness it was a team effort between Daisley Rhoads & Kerslake that made those albums what they are today
Master pieces !
@@not255 Randy didn't write any riffs for those albums? Everyone knows about Bob he got screwed.
Agreed the rhythm section missed it on the remix.

Well Sharon and Ozzy got me with the reissue of Diary of a Madman. I could tell it was totally a rip off when I heard it. It took a while before I could find the original pressing reissues. It was a money grab otherwise they should have listened to Max. I mean the guy literally made music history with his knowledge and Randy's amazing creativity and Bob's awesome lyrics. Come on; really?
Same here, as soon as I listened and found out I went to a used CD store and got the originals, which is what I should have done instead of buying the "remasters" new. It took a while however as word was out the originals were no longer going to be available. So there was a rush on it by others to buy too.
So I got the CDs with the flamy edges and the vertical OZZY and window in the middle. It was a fiasco none the less.
It wasn't exactly a money grab. Sharon was pissed at Lee Kerslake and Bob Dasiley and wanted them to stop receiving royalties. I forget the source, but I read that years ago.
Where did you get OG press? The remixes are a fraud
@@SECURITY39 Local Record Shop.
Kerslake and Dailey never received their royalties. Sharon blamed Jet records, but they found out Sharon had been receiving their royalties behind their backs all along, and sued the Osbournes.
Randy didn't even want to join Ozzy. He was talked into it.
Thank God he came to his senses
@@yyxy.oncesaid that decision got him killed... he shoulda stayed in QR
@@timvonswine1970 No if he had done that he would have been hit by a truck and killed 15 months earlier
@@yyxy.oncesaid He'd probably be alive today if he hadn't joined Ozzy.
Is there anyone or anything that Sharon hasn’t screwed over or tried to ruin?
So in bands in general which players more anal about being in time. Been to a few jams and the experienced players seemed to lament about out of time players.
R/R WAS A THOROUGHBRED...OUT FRONT AND CHOMPING AT THE BIT ...CATCH UP , BAND.
I like the original recording
. the bass solos don't sound the same and the drums either
I just figured some godlike creature descended from a netherworld to guide Randy's hands.
I get what you mean, I get the joke, but, if you think about it, that would cheapen it, 'cause then it wouldn't really be Randy.
Real big suprise that Sharon had a hissy fit when she didn't get her way. 🙄🙄🙄
Randy is EVERY bit as relevant Eddie...
Re mixing these masterpieces with a different Bass player & Drummer has got to be the lowest thing in a long history of fucking musicians over that Sharon & Ozzy have ever done.
Sharon’s fiasco with Iron Maiden at Ozzfest also killed the festival.
Sharon is so cheap to avoid paying Bassist and Drummer they re record the bass and Drums on two Master Piece albums Disgraceful.
BLIZZARD AND DIARY FUCKN KICK SO MICH ASS..OZZY NEED TO LOOK UP TO THE SKY AND SAY THANK YOU ..WITHOUT RANDY OZZY WOULD JUST BEEN A SINGER FOR BLACKSABBATH- ...R.I.P RANDY
With the New York Dolls, the drummer & singer were on the beat, the two guitars, ( especially Thunders), jumped the beat, & the bass trailed. This gave the song a smear sound, which a lot of bands that followed took note of.
Full of it Dued
You have no idea were you under a ROCK gees

The original first 2 albums were metal masterpieces. Any tinkering afterwords was ridiculously unnecessary and the works of a halfwitted greed-meister. Bob Daisley
and Randy Rhoads are the primarily responsible for their composition. RIP Randy. Ozzy's management already knows their shyte on a shoe.
What the hell kind of drugs was ozzy on that made him fall for that thing Sharon osbourne his first wife Thelma was way better than her he should of stayed with her
Sharon Arden. Daughter of Don arden who ripped off black sabbath almost into bankruptcy. She had a good teacher
Ozzy had the right temperment to fall in with the likes of Sharron... he played the cards given to him.....
Sharon and Ozzy even screwed Randy himself back around 1981 by breaking the agreement that the "Blizzard of Oz" album cover would have said "Blizzard of Oz/featuring ex-Black Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Ozbourne". Instead the album cover implied that it was a SOLO record by Ozzy...not the Blizzard of Oz band. Please check out the Bob Daisley interview on RUclips.
Randy and Bob had to frickin' go to court a few times to fight this bullshit.
Yes...everyone knows that Randy and Bob are geniuses....but can you believe that these 2 had to deal with the "Snake in the Grass" aka Sharon?
I have loss respect for Ozzy. He is a "pushover". He lets Sharon call all the shots and back stab Randy...Bob...and Jake E. Lee and others. Ozzy is an absolute legend...but he is also a fake...
That's what's wrong with todays music... Rhodes, Van Halen, etc would PRACTICE before recording...now a days it's 500 takes pieced together and the guitar player couldnt play it live if their life depended on it LOL
Petrucci would have something to say about that.... He can reproduce like no one else can
No offense to anyone and both those guys are great players ... But OMG that remake was fugging horrible !!!
Re-recording those songs with different players was crime against humanity ... Hahahaha
Sad fact - Sharon Osbourne only remixed those early albums to denie performance credits/$ to Bob and Lee, the original drummer and bass player. An extremely vindictive and greedy move on her part. She's a strange bird!
Glad he refused Sharon.
Sharon is so cheap i am surprised she didn't re record Randys guitar to avoid paying Royalties
I have read that the osbourne's made an attempt to cut out the rhoad's royalties also...not surprised and dont know what stopped that from happening.
@@cupoli138 .Yeah apparently she changed the publishing Contract after Randy died and The Rhoades Family had to sue .There is alot of money in Publishing so if you can cut out 2 or three people its 3 times as much money.I dont think Randy wanted to go back to school as much as much as he wanted to leave he knew he was a big part of the magic but was probably only making 200 bucks a week and prob had no Publishing agreement in place yet. Bob and Lee knew what was going to happen thats why they were let go and by the sounds of it Sharon was were probably in the process of breaking it to Randy .The old ..do another album and we will see how it goes Oh live album oh my Sabbath songs you loose again Promoters and managers are ruthless in this biz I know my buddy was managed by Sharon i heard a few thing$
