I would like to add to my rant... Telling local South Africans that these foreigners are coming to invest here and give jobs is so demeaning. Basically what you are saying is that locals are not good enough to be entrepreneurs and business owners. So, you will allow the foreigners to come in here, buy up all the property, own all the businesses and live a luxurious lifestyle in our city. But, don't worry, the foreigners will employ you to serve their tables and wash their dishes!! This is extremely devaluing and insulting. The government needs to start supporting local entrepreneurship and put the profits back in the pockets of locals. And airbnb is a great source for local entrepreneurship. We just need to take it out of the hands of foreigners. Stop throwing little breadcrumbs at locals and teach them how to bake their own bread.

With all due respect, asking someone who is profiting from pricing out locals if AirBnB should be banned is a no brainer. She will obviously say no. The government at a national level, not just city of Cape Town should regulate air bnb. Locals should not be forced to only look at social housing because their local options that exist are being taken by tourists and people in nomad visas. That’s ridiculous. Tourists are visitors, they should not be prioritised to the extent of disrupting the ecosystem of indigenous people. She’s basically promoting creating this huge problem and then saying it’s up to city of Cape Town to decide what they do with the majority of people being pushed out. Nonsense

It's both sad and sickening how us locals in Cape Town have to suffer because we can't afford property here. You have to cram yourself into a small space for an exorbitant rental ! We DONT earn dollars/euros etc, we get paid in SA Rands! The greed of most Airbnb owners, yes including locals are just disgusting! Banning airbnb will take away people's livelihoods who cannot find employment. Many people own a single property and survive solely on airbnb income as well as airbnb experiences. The problem is that there is no restriction on foreigners purchasing property like there is in other countries. Cape Town has an extreme problem with Europeans, and now Americans, buying up huge amounts of property. Reselling at inflated prices to other foreigners or renting out at inflated prices to other foreigners who then open businesses that serve tourists. Locals cannot even afford to rent in Cape Town any more, let alone buy. Airbnb is not the problem. We need to start restricting how many properties foreigners can purchase, and areas where foreigners can purchase. I rent a commerical property to run my small ceramic business. Every property I viewed is owned by a foreigner and the property I now rent is owned by a foreigner as well as the property I previously rented. 60% of the flats in the block I live in is owned by Europeans who rent out to tourists because locals can not afford the inflated prices. Blaming airbnb is a narrow minded way of looking at the problem. Many locals survive off airbnb experiences. Government needs to wake up and notice the real issue. Besides all the Europeans buying up all our property, they are the only ones who can afford to open business'. Local entrepreneurship is not being supported and we get treated like unwelcome visitors in our own city. Bermuda, as an example, do not allow foreigners to purchase property because of this exact problem.

So the policies are geared towards short term rentals for "digital nomads" and not building housing stock for locals, graduates, professionals, etc. The prices of these rentals, puts even the current housing stock way out of reach of our middle classes. It just shows where the DA's priorities lie, not with locals.

2 things: 1. Locals simply cannot compete with Pounds, Dollars and Euros when government allows foreigners to buy property anywhere and everywhere for cheap compared to overseas cities. We need protected areas for SA citizens and (2) we need international zones to boost investment in undeveloped areas that are still attractive to international investors as done in parts of Panama and other countries.

Oh.... and maybe there should be stricter regulation on estate agents, who favour foreigners as tenants over locals + in addition to hiking the rental rates to crazy levels, and LIE, blatantly, about the size of places. I have now been the victim of this 3 times! and not a little bit, but on average 20% so if the per square meter rate is say for instancre R35 000 when buying that will impact someone's bond over 20 years, by R2000 a month! Shocking, and disgusting crazy greed!

The city doing a great job at building affordable housing next to railway stations. The whole taxi regulation crackdown was to protect the railways. once that's up and running, nearly 1 million people per day will use the trains. Land close to stations will be earmarked for subsidised social housing. This is all DA initiative and needs to be applauded. It's slow progress, but it's progress.
