@@Frank-zw7gn Not at all. The model of Grievous is one of the most detailed in the Prequels. Indentations and lighting are one of the best in the prequels especially compared to the storm troopers as shown at 12:04 . Even then it still much better than any other CG character that interacts with irl objects, but arguably yes it doesn't shine that well there.
Fun fact, Solo did not reveal that Darth Maul survived, we already found out about that in the animated TV shows. Solo just picked up that thread for the movie goers.

@@thesnazzycomet I was hoping they'd cover this. The first few minutes are truly amazing. I love way it slowly pans out, and then pans back in to convey the sense the sense of scale. A very tasteful and effective set up for something so incredibly massive.
Absolutely this. It's so strange how the former was over a decade older and yet still looks so much better. I think it had something to do with the lighting/contrast and the over-reliance on CG and green screen for the Hobbit, it just looked like a cartoon in so many shots. But I'm not an expert, would love to see your take on it.
Seriously, where's Ep 3? The opening battle - especially that opening shot - is STILL stunning. Honestly, I know we're supposed to hate the prequels, but the first shot of Ep 3 may genuinely be my favorite shot of the entire series to date. My mind melted a bit, the first time I saw it in the theater.
You guys should react to Peter Jackson's and Steven Spielberg's "Tintin", the effects on the human characters blended into looking like cartoon characters is amazing
I was so confused about whether or not the characters were real actors or just animations when I first watched the movie. The nose of Captain Haddock hinted that it was animation.
When I was a kid we had this guy come in to talk about magnets in our science class and told us that the pod racing was all done for real with magnets and I never really thought about it but just took that as fact until now. I’m 21.
When Darth Mail is fighting Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, and Maul is retreating from Qui-Gon through the energy gates, Maul’s lightsaber blade passes right through the gate mechanism without affecting it. I’m surprised you didn’t catch it. It’s really hard for me to ignore after I noticed it.
@@kurvos Relative to a lot of the story lines in post season 2 CW it wasn't really at the same level. And I will never forgive them for what they did to Admiral Thrawn. They neutered one of the greatest Star Wars characters to make the show better for kids. Not a bad show, but aside from the Maul/Obi Wan scene, they were too scared to touch on the more difficult topics and brutality of the CW that gave each episode weight.
it's insane that it took until the sequel trilogy for anybody to realize that they can use practical lighting for lightsabers so they actually look like sabers of light that interact with their surroundings.
Too bad the lightsaber fights after Ep 7 are shit compared to the prequel ones because they got heavier. Lighter lightsabers allowed for the epic fast paced duels in the prequels.
@@theenzoferrari458 Tom Cruise is a psychopath anyway. Probably only does his own stunts because he believes the mothership will come for his ethereal soul if he misses a jump.
There are a handful of shots in _The Phantom Menace_ showing the practical Jar Jar costume. The fact that the practical blends seamlessly with the CGI is astounding for a film released in 1999.
@@generationsigma646 Plus these videos are great. Im subcribed to just know more about film making because its so interesting. Now I get to see these artists iv been watching for years break down "High budget" vfx? Hell the fuck yes
I remember in the behind the scenes documentary of Episode 2, ILM campaigned heavily for Lucas to go CGI with Yoda. It was impressive for the time, especially clothing simulation and translucency of his ears to imitate the Frank Oz puppet. Episode 2 is also very heavy on CGI as opposed to Episode 1, which did a lot of practical effects - including yoda. Which was subsequently changed in modern renditions of the movie.
@@zacroper3577 Still many people hate the Hobbit series because they used too much CGI. Especially for the Orcs. While LotR always used costumes and masks. CGI=shit must get out of peoples minds.
@@ashleyneku5432 it is, but the more recent animated series then killed him off again. And Solo takes place before that series. Only a few movies in and we're already back to the goofiness of Star Wars EU canon.
Haha. I had the same thought. Maul's Clone Wars/Rebels arc is one of my FAVORITE pieces of Star Wars lore, and I lost my mind when I saw him come back in Solo.
Putting him in Solo was incredible. Maul had 0 character in TPM but his arcs in the animated series were amazing. So happy the films have enough guts to acknowledge that.
Personnally, I find hybrid shots containing booth CG and live action/miniatures most impressive, because combining techniques seamlessly always seems more magical to me than just brute forcing a quality render in a full CG shot. Don't get me wrong, the more I learn on the actual process of creating CG shots the more I am blown away by quality CGI, but there will always be a bit more magic to miniatures, puppetry, real sets, costumes and actors.
Yeah this HAS to be the next video, it's too juicy! Honestly as well I'd love to see them react to classic special effects like the original Star Wars trilogy or The Thing. I know it's a little bit out of their wheelhouse a but it'd still be super amazing to see.
I think Days of Future Past did a better job with the effects in its Quicksilver scene. Apocalypse's Quicksilver scene has a lot of shots where everything clearly looks CG.
I was hoping someone pointed this out. Sadly as epic as The Clone Wars is, only the more dedicated SW fans have seen them, which is a shame because I definitely enjoy many of the episodes much more than some of the prequels... Also, so much is explained in TCW which helps understand many of the events in the movies.

it's insane that it took until the sequel trilogy for anybody to realize that they can use practical lighting for lightsabers so they actually look like sabers of light that interact with their surroundings.
It's not a realization thing - they couldn't do it. LED technology wasn't advanced enough when they made the original and prequel trilogies.
Too bad the lightsaber fights after Ep 7 are shit compared to the prequel ones because they got heavier. Lighter lightsabers allowed for the epic fast paced duels in the prequels.
