they should analyse the evolution / progression of visual effects in harry potter from 1999 to 2011. it blows me away comparing the first to the last movie
Hey since this has enough likes to be seen by the guys, Id also like to mention that weird shot at the beginning of 1989 batman that looks like a cartoon batman figure was drawn onto the film, as he looks down at the 2 bad guys mugging the family.
that Contact cabinet scene is so invisible as an special effect that when you see it the first time, you can't tell exactly what happened but your mind goes like. "what?" and then you try to figure out how the heck it was made. A simple yet beautiful effect that has a relevant narrative in it... hats off
This is series could be on episode 165 and it wouldn’t get old. 😩 The chemistry these guys have is insane and the content is awesome. Keep up the great work guys.
there's always crazy in Christopher Nolan's movie in terms of CGI, and the only one recent film that doesn't have much crazy it's the "Dunkirk" since there's not much CGI in there at all, you can see the modern shipping cranes on the beach shots. but really the practical are the ones that sells it
There should be a disater-related video: Twister, Into the Storm, 2012, Cloverfield, The Day After Tomorrow, Volcano, San Andreas, Armageddon, Godzilla (just some ideas to pick from)
I was so excited by the look and feel of 2012 before it was released, and some of the CG work is brilliant. But it is hands down the worst ever film for over the top Hollywood clichés.
I agree. Do some themes. Super heroes marvel. Super heroes DC. Disaster movies. Aging deaging. Lord of the rings Etc. Each theme is one episode. Each episode shows good and bad.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when they learn to fly brooms for the first time and Neville gets his robes caught and breaks his arm. The VFX are terrifying!! Or the troll scene or quidditch scenes!
About the lighting in space: Thats what was a major thing in filming Interstellar. They had these beautiful, 15:1 miniatures of all the spaceships and they had to light them with the hardest, furthest away source possible. So they set up one lamp at the other side of the studio and flagged it off the black walls, getting the harshest shadows possible on the models. But then they had to go for a super low frame rate to get the exposure they needed (since they shot film and couldn't just bump up the ISO), like 4-5 or even
An entire episode dedicated to LoTR: *The Lord of the Rings* and *The Hobbit* (WETA Workshop, baby!) What VFX reason was it that made LoTR work, but didn't translate at all to The Hobbit? Most people have at least an inkling but I for one would love to hear an in-depth breakdown from the Corr-Crew!!
@kurvos In fairness, the hobbit films were just pretty damn bad. They were incoherent and soul less for the most part. Even the non-cg moments look like cg due to the fairy tale like filter or whatever they did to it. Every actor and object looks far too smooth and glossy which makes even real shots look like a cg render. It's weird. I don't even know exactly what they did to cause that affect, I just know it's there and I don't believe it's just the 48fps thing which may have affected it too. if you enjoy the films, that's awesome, but I don't think they're very great examples of cgi or storytelling.
Ella Seibold I thought that too, the first time I saw it, watching on a computer screen. Then I watched more recently on my home projection screen in HD, and I was shocked at how obvious it was that his face is cut out and pasted onto another actor’s head. It’s strange how different screens can make visual effects look more apparent sometimes.
I'm just shy of 54 and learned to read with these comics. Literally waited my whole freaking life to see comic books come to life on the big screen. These movies came along and that one scene made my life. 👍

Blade Runner 2049, espically around 00:13:38, that shot is one of the most amazing VFX shot i've ever seen, the perfect mix between practical elements and vfx elements, and the soundtrack makes it only better! You guys have to talk about that amazing shit!
I watched Contact for the first time last year and I remember having a huge "WOAH!" moment when she opened the medicine cabinet. First from the jolt you get when you realize "reality" wasn't the way you thought. And then from the "But... how'd they do that... in '97?"
I'm not sure if this quite fits your wheelhouse, but the CG World of Warcraft cinematics might be interesting to look at. I've never seen orcs that real-looking that weren't practical effects.
I’d love to see them react to the Warcraft movie. Lots of people said the effects were bad, or at least didn’t mesh well with the human actors. I’d love to hear their thoughts
4:17 I'm so glad you included this shot from Contact. I remember watching the movie at a drive-in theater and wondering how in the hell they did that mirror trick. Good stuff.

LOTR of by far my favorite franchise ever, and my favorite movies ever. I've seen the extended versions atleast 15 times. And in my eyes they're perfect, the example how movies should look like. Perfect cast, perfect writing, and perfect effects. Plenty of real actors with tons of make up instead of the CGI fuckfest called the hobbit movies...
wow that shot from contact is incredible. not only a great effect but one that greatly enhanced the visual story telling of the scene. you got a powerful visual of the characters feelings. we didnt even need to be told. just through a brilliant transition.
The effort is admirable, but honestly, the design of mechanical parts themselves is... almost amateurish. It's like they asked somebody who does models for Poser to design Ava. Or at the very least, some youtube short. I mean, chicken fence, seriously?
@@DarthBiomech I liked it. But even if you didn't you have to give kudos to the integration. Afaik they did not do full CGI replacement. There are portions of her taken from the plate and portions re-done. Then the room glass reflections. Essentially they had to do all of those replacements several times for every reflection. The inside model had to be precisely matched to actresses skeleton too, so the movement would work. It's an CGI masterpiece like it or not.
Love Andrew Kramer and his work. As someone in post production I really appreciate his keen eye for detail and ability to make vfx look very natural with seemingly little effort.

That Contact scene is so good that I literally could not figure out what you were going to be showing because it never once occurred to me that it obviously would need to be CG. I'm dumbfounded. Wow. See now THAT is effective CGI - when the audience doesn't even think about how impossible that camera shot was because you just feel like you're there. That's wild. Nicely done!

I would love an breakdown of practical stunts, sets, or moments that are enhanced by subtle CGI i.e. Mad Max Fury Road, Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Inception, etc.
I love the Harry Potter movies so much, growing up with them, but how good or bad are the effects? The most memorable shot is the return of Voldemort in the 4th movie. Harry fights against Voldemort and their spells are colliding and connecting. In this scene there is so much CGI going on. Would love to see you guys analyzing the scene.
I've always watched video copilot and corridor digital since i was just starting in vfx back in 2014. And you're here in one video together. My two idols. Damn.
BR was a full CGI face reconstruction ala Rogue One. No original actor involved (at least for the on set performance side). MCU's tech is where you see the marriage of 3D replicas, stand-in actors, manual 'airbrushing', and makeup combined.
@@wormengine that one is probably even better to look at than this example, the movies capture and bring back so much imagination and memories. It's incredible.
Marvell Nathanael DH I know a relative of even peters(quicksilver) and was told how the scene was created in days of future past. If they do review this scene I can give input on how they did it
Curious Case of Benjamin Button is mind-blowing. Almost all of David Fincher's movies have incredible CGI. The Social Network, for example, has more VFX shots than Godzilla from 2014.
11:58 That footage of the skyscraper exploding was actually flipped, resized and reused later in the movie as the alien ship's main gun blowing up, so they didn't have to build and destroy another model.
Video copilot taught me just about everything I know about VFX. I've even paid for very expensive classes and the stuff they went over is the same stuff that Andrew goes over in his videos for free. It's the best VFX resource on the internet.
I'm glad you gave props to the brief but great 'mirror scene' from Contact (one of my top ten favorite films ever). Now that you explained there was no real mirror in the shot, I'm even more blown away on how the filmmaker and production crew pulled it off. Amazing.
M'gann M'orzz they probably will show shots that look bad because King Kong the whole movie was very good cgi but they show the one scene where it fell off
@@justinbyrd5480 I think he's talking about the inside of the black hole, and how those crazy warping effects were done. That said James, Neil deGrasse Tyson does a breakdown somewhere on how scientifically accurate the movie is. That's not really a VFX thing though.
PivotGuyDC1 no idea why someone would think this is a question that should be answered by some artists instead of astrophysicists, specifically ones that study black holes. Also incredible that someone thinks we know exactly what black holes look like. Until recently every single rendition of a black hole has been done by artists. We probably will never truly know what black holes look like, and science wont know what happens inside of black holes. The only chance that might happen would be with a reconciliation of general relativity and quantum mechanics Goes to show just how little the average person knows about what’s happening on the cutting edge of science, but we’ve come a long ways from ”we discovered another element” and “flies don’t spawn from rotting stuff; adult flies lay eggs in it and those eggs hatch” and “its a good idea to wash your hands and instruments before operating on a person.”
I never usually comment but I just wanted to say thank you to this particular series of videos for helping me through the worst nausea I've ever had in my life. You guys rock and I appreciate the cool little VFX knowledge tidbits 👍
The ”time in a bottle” scene with quicksilver in X men: days of future past is one of my favourites, it would be very interesting if you broke it down!
I double, triple, quadruple, one thousand times this comment. I have been posting this comment on the other videos too omg. Without a doubt no one can argue that that movie has the best CGI to date. WETA does not disappoint.
I really want them to look at the hand holding scene- ruclips.net/video/U3D2vmWD88w/видео.html Is it 1 CGI hand or 2? Or none? lol I'm sure you can see Hugo's fingers through the translucent parts of Alita's hand.
They are probably waiting on the Blueray or streaming release to do the review....I think Alita deserves it's own episode as there are so many awesome VFX scenes. Alita wakes up, Centurion encounter, Berserker body, the VFX behind the motorcycle, centurion battle, there are some cool VFX in the bar fight, the back story for Ido's daughter was done by a separate VFX team and has mixed real and VFX elements, the tear drop scene... The eye VFX and scene transitions done there are very nice IMO. Lastly comparison between original trailer eyes and release eyes and skin translucency as it is definitely different.

@John Smitty Because you didn't change your glasses. Check in with your ophthalmologist for a new prescription.
the opening shot in the second one is just perfection. pure, simple perfection
The mocap that was only used as reference and completely redone in post by character animators?
@John Smitty What are you even talking about? The apes in War were hyper realistic. Definitely the best mo cap so far.
React on dueling in harry Potter. Like if you guess agree
React to skinny Captain America. I've heard that's pretty crazy VFX wise
No more than the Winklevosses.
yes please react to this!!
cant tell if youre being sarcastic hahaha its two actors
That was nice af
@@Tantagotantago10 not for all shots
yall should react to the hologram waifu three way in bladerunner 2049
YES
Agreed. do it you guys.
Even to all of blade runner 2049, men this movie was a blast to look at
Reserve an entire episode for that movie alone, I'd say.
Agreed. In fact, they should dedicate a complete video to Blade Runner 2049, that movie is a cinematic masterpiece, especially visually.
The scene from Contact got audible gasps from the audience. I immediately went back for the next showing just to see that transition.
"I thought we're gonna trash these movies"
You and me, pal. With every chapter, they become more forgiving.
They’re not film critics, they’re empathetic to the challenge of making CGI look good.
Mad Max: Fury Road (Blending Practical effects and CGI)
didn't they already do that?
Barely any CGI in Fury Road
I love the Harry Potter movies so much, growing up with them, but how good or bad are the effects?
The most memorable shot is the return of Voldemort in the 4th movie. Harry fights against Voldemort and their spells are colliding and connecting. In this scene there is so much CGI going on.
Would love to see you guys analyzing the scene.
I've always watched video copilot and corridor digital since i was just starting in vfx back in 2014. And you're here in one video together. My two idols. Damn.
Star Wars episode 3 general grevious and the battle of corosant.

@@donatbeko4766 I ditto the idea of analyzing the Battle of Mustafar.

Please do a de-aging special (MCU, BR2049 and others).
P.S. You should also react to Birdman.
Or just aging (Benjamin Button, Logan, etc.)
BR was a full CGI face reconstruction ala Rogue One. No original actor involved (at least for the on set performance side). MCU's tech is where you see the marriage of 3D replicas, stand-in actors, manual 'airbrushing', and makeup combined.
Leonardo Guerini yas
“Did they just kill a bunch of extras?” Lmao wtf😂😂
"Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix"
The building secret entrance just after 10:30 in to the movie !
i still love the diagon alley wall opening scene from the first movie
@@wormengine that one is probably even better to look at than this example, the movies capture and bring back so much imagination and memories. It's incredible.
Harry Potter is so gay. It's not even funny anymore.
PLOT TWIST: The couch they are sitting on is cgi.
They need a bigger and better couch. That thing shakes whenever one of them moves.
They definitely need to add some weird gratuitous VFX into these some time.
React to Quicksilver in X-Men Days of Future past and apocalypse
Marvell Nathanael DH I know a relative of even peters(quicksilver) and was told how the scene was created in days of future past. If they do review this scene I can give input on how they did it
@Patrick Buffa I haven't watch it yet cuz I'm not interested... Is it any good?
@Patrick Buffa I'm gonna wait until they release the Blu Ray
You can find the making of the scene. It's half practical effects, and half CGI.
That Nightcrawler scene was freaking nuts! I’m hoping to pull it off for myself and play around with it cause of how sick it looks.
I have a few suggestions: Avatar, Interstellar, Ex Machina, Doctor strange, Transformers 1 and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button...
Curious Case of Benjamin Button is mind-blowing. Almost all of David Fincher's movies have incredible CGI. The Social Network, for example, has more VFX shots than Godzilla from 2014.
Best crossover ever.
WASABIII :D
Saludos alvaroooo. A ver si tu haces un crosover con ellos.

That footage of the skyscraper exploding was actually flipped, resized and reused later in the movie as the alien ship's main gun blowing up, so they didn't have to build and destroy another model.
Amazing.
Do Shelob the spider from LOTR! Still looks amazing today.
That entire movie looks jaw-droppingly good still!
Would be interesting to see Shelob vs Hobbit no.2 spiders compared in terms of the VFX
the transformers films! Specifically the first two as I think they had the best visual effects by far.
M'gann M'orzz they probably will show shots that look bad because King Kong the whole movie was very good cgi but they show the one scene where it fell off
The man, the myth, the legend. I owe all my VFX skills to Andrew Kramer. Thank you Andrew and CC Crew.
The demon face tutorial got me INTO VFX! I owe Andrew Kramer everything!
Take a look at the Harry Potter films.
Im thinking where Harry rides troll vs when Dumbledore fights Voldemort.
Came here to say this! Especially quidditch & the troll in Sorcerers Stone!
Prisoner of Azkaban also has some camera trick shots using VFX similar to Contact
You guys should defiantly do Interstellar. More specifically on the black hole, and how accurate it really is.
James Moran oh yeah because we actually know what a black hole Iike..... totally
We do dipshit
The only chance that might happen would be with a reconciliation of general relativity and quantum mechanics
Goes to show just how little the average person knows about what’s happening on the cutting edge of science, but we’ve come a long ways from ”we discovered another element” and “flies don’t spawn from rotting stuff; adult flies lay eggs in it and those eggs hatch” and “its a good idea to wash your hands and instruments before operating on a person.”
yes!! when they enter that wormhole
We need Andrew in all of 'VFX Artists React' series. PERIOD!

Robert Elisha Lord Of The Rings looks great but The Hobbit looks terrible
@@leanmeangreenbeanmachine3347 i hate the green ghost army in lotr tbh.

REACT TO ALITIA BATTLE ANGEL PLEASE!!!!
Her hair is cgi! Her ENTIRE BODY is all cg.
The motorball scene!!!
I double, triple, quadruple, one thousand times this comment. I have been posting this comment on the other videos too omg. Without a doubt no one can argue that that movie has the best CGI to date. WETA does not disappoint.
the entire movie is a giant CG orgy, a good one to be sure
I really want them to look at the hand holding scene- ruclips.net/video/U3D2vmWD88w/видео.html Is it 1 CGI hand or 2? Or none? lol I'm sure you can see Hugo's fingers through the translucent parts of Alita's hand.
To the top comment you go!!
