    Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats) joins us this week to share the duality of having immense gratitude for everything he’s been able to accomplish throughout his career, all the while being cursed with ambition that drives him to create more. Being a trailblazer in independent film, Kevin gives us his opinion about the current state of filmmaking post pandemic, the cyclical similarities between major sci-fi franchises, and the problem with today’s movie rating system. We also talk about creating a legacy off of a basic name, bottoming your way through life, and embracing fandom.

    I think it's hilarious how people think it's bad that he doesn't want to focus on negativity. That he just wants to focus on things he enjoys. Good for him, I say.
    Clerks III was fucking amazing btw.

      yeah, as a star wars fan my whole life, I've had to work really hard to cancel out the "noise". At this point I just want to watch/read/play the thing.....enjoy it or not enjoy on my own terms and just keep to keep it myself. I don't even want to engage in that fandom ever again. The self entitlement, the toxicity, the walking on egg shells has become so exhausting.

    I read a blog post many years ago where the author had met Quentin Tarantino at a party/event and Quentin told him "never hate a movie." Even a really bad movie tends to have some redeeming quality in it. (A scene or sequence, or a cast member's performance, or visual effects were good, or a great stunt... etc.) Even bad movies tend to have something good in them.

      It's true! I went to college in Minnesota, which is Mystery Science Theater country. I gained a whole new appreciation for bad films after that. There are plenty I genuinely enjoy.
      To me, a movie is "bad" now if there's something offensive about it. Like, it promotes bad values or opinions. There's something morally abhorrent about the film, y'know?

Having met people that have met them and that allowing me moments to have cool moments as well to interact with them, has helped me have even more reasons to do what I do~ Would love to have all my favorite people in a huge room watching history be made and doing comedy documentaries about amazing people. This almost seven minute clip goes in about ten different directions. LOL. And, no surprise, a lot of people not understanding what he's talking about (See also: the comments on any Chris Stuckman video). Negativity for negativity's sake, AKA Hate watching, is fucking boring. What's the point? Who cares? If you want to be the one millionth person to go "OMG, Madame Web is lame," no one's stopping you. But just because you want to wallow in misery doesn't mean anyone else was to.

      Well hating everything is very annoying. Idk if you love critical drinker for example at one point with all his negativity he will be negative about you love. Then you'll kind of come to the conclusion that you came too... But there is something to be said about honesty. Refusing to be honest about a horrible product does make a authenticity problem and credibility problem. The thing for me is I can tell that movie sucked or Catwoman sucked or Batman and Robin sucked and will not watch it. But they get paid to watch it and complain about it. They get paid for their negativity which kind of calls to question their authenticity.

    Kevin Smith was a rebel independent filmmaker who flipped off too many studios and lost favor in Hollywood for nearly 25 years. He diversified outside of films and directing and due to time, age, and where he is in life, has accepted the corporate marketing stance and Hollywood has welcomed him back enough to be part of the machine. Smith won't threaten financial stability for his family and goals by having anything negative to say against any studio or their product. Otherwise, he might be shooting himself in the foot for future work and find himself blackballed again. Makes sense. If you're a rebel your entire life, then that's all you are left with.....rebellion, not success. He grew up.

    I respect the idea of basically if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything, but for one thing his job on his podcast was to critique movies, and secondly if you decide you're not going to be negative that doesn't mean you have to literally cry tears of joy over shitty movies, which he's done repeatedly over the last five years or so.

    One thing people seem to confuse is "hating" and "criticism". Kevin Smith now conflates the two it feels like, especially when he talks about anything that's a comic book/pop culture adaptation. I don't know if this sentiment is the same reason his movies are as baffling awful now but they were already going down that path well before his heart attack so idk.

    • @hectic105
      @hectic105 Месяц назад

      I think you’re right about that confusion, but drawing the wrong conclusion. There are lots of people that seem to think that “critiquing” a movie means bashing it relentlessly and in a mean-spirited way (just look at the negative critic comments used to get clicks). He doesn’t have to be that critical either, if he wants to focus on the positive, why is that a problem? Why is that something that’s SO important that someone would take issue with it?

I'm 38 and have never heard someone say,"hey Cher". I know where it comes from but no one talks like that anymore. But it's not all bad... John Goodman met his wife and fell in love with her and new Orleans . and so he is the best thing new Orleans got out of that. stupid movie. I loved Kevin Smiths work until recently, this "I'm a fan now" but yet he keeps making movies to pull nostalgia, but yet the quality is near absolute zero, it's like the "dude in a gas station who had something to say about society" turned into the most corporate friendly, will not endorse controversy, milk toast, won't take chances and just puts out new movies that have no connection to their betters, Clerks vs Clerks 3 is like a man with a dream vs a man who has everything and does respect the past.
