    Guest Bio:
Jewel went from a girl who grew up with no running water on an Alaskan homestead, to a homeless teenager in San Diego, to an award winning, multi-platinum recording artist who released one of the best-selling debuts of all time. Through her career Jewel has sold over 30 million albums worldwide and has earned 26 nominations for such awards as the GRAMMYs, American Music Awards, MTV Awards, VH1 Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and Country Music Awards, winning eight times. Jewel has been featured on the cover of TIME Magazine, Rolling Stone, has performed on Saturday Night Live, at the Super Bowl and the NBA Finals, for the Pope and the President of the United States. Her music has spanned a wide-range of genres with top hits in Folk, Pop, Club, Country, Standards, Children’s and Holiday music. Jewel’s new studio album Freewheelin’ Woman, via her own Words Matter Media is out now.
Jewel decided to move out at the young age of 15 due to an abusive household. While suffering from debilitating panic attacks, an eating disorder, depression and significant trauma, Jewel became homeless by the age of 18 and developed agoraphobia, the fear of leaving one’s home. During that time, she looked into her own inner world and reflected on her experiences to develop a set of tools that rewired her habits and created new emotional patterns. After learning meditation and innovating her own practices, Jewel was able to heal symptoms of her depression and go from surviving to thriving. She co-founded the Inspiring Children Foundation to deliver life-saving tools to at-risk youth in Las Vegas. After observing incredible outcomes for these youth, Jewel decided to commercialize her life’s work and build a scalable platform in the metaverse. She joins Innerworld as Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer to bring her 20+ years of experience to the platform.

@@heartheart5543’ve listened to be apart of her book, read by Jewel, which should be done more often by other authors. Of their books. Audible is Awesome! I’ve listened to Jewel for 10 years. I heard her signing voice and songs and I was reaching a mental peace.. I was and am full of hope when I listen to her music and her her life story here. It’s a Beautiful gift to us all. I will finish her book but this tells me a lot about her childhood with her mother and father. I have a mother with Borderline Personality disorder or CPTSD and I love her but I need to get out of her house. I’ve been here way too long, in 2003 didn’t jewel says she stop talking to her mother. Stopped her relationship, it’s what I need to do only, my mom is putting a roof over my head and people think WOW what a blessing but keep in mind there is no love from her towards me in fact she wants me out, when she passes I will be homeless if I don’t find a place to go, she is giving this house to my estranged daughter. Because she has switched us. My mother is so abusive that she has switched us. My daughter has become her daughter. She is giving her everything, and her best friend her house. I live it. I don’t know if my daughter will allow me to keep living here once my mother is gone. But it’s not looking like it since she refuses to talk to me. It might be because my mother is here though and she is very jealous of our relationship we have had in the past. My daughter is overwhelmed and has been unloved too by my mother. No hugs from grandma and no help from grandma but just with money. No emotional support from Grandma. But here I am here mother and she is choosing not to be in my life either. It’s okay she is scared… to have a relationship with me. If you all listen to Dr. Kim Sage , she talks a lot about parents switching their kids for other people’s children and making those children there children. And dumping their own children. Betrayal and abandonment they do a lot. My mother isn’t a narcissist she probably has Borderline Personality Disorder and Autism. She should have never had children. And same goes for me. I had no idea how unhealthy I was or she was for 40 years of my life.

Yes. This album has forever been close to my heart because the abuse and trauma I went through. The song about Adrian and the song Little Sister.. I would just lay there in tears.. dreaming of the day I would leave my abusive home.. thinking about all the ones I love who passed.. mrdr.. self-termination.. age.. I’m glad I’m still here.. I’m glad I’m living the life I would daydream about as a young girl wanting to escape. I’m so thankful.

Don't stop with Pieces of You. I literally heard one of her songs in my head dealing with my narcissistic sister recently and it helped me reframe my thoughts to see the truth.
My voice is the same pitch as hers and I didn't realize how emotional I got when I sang songs from pieces of you. The first time my daughter heard me sing Jewel songs. She was a toddler and it scared her. But then the first concert she went to was jewel at about 8 or 9 in a small theater. She heard her warm up and then when she stepped out on stage all in white. My daughter gasped and said, " she's an angel."

Believe men/males cope by being angry, aggressive and ashamed (the act of bringing the school lunch maybe gave him, his forgiveness for the day) but males deal with pain differently and if they admit the pain it shows weakness. Her mother is very good at inputing into the "relationship" what she knows the other person is starving for and her mother runs with it. She sure isn't cut out to be a real heartfelt mother. Not a real mother who cares about her child. I felt sick hearing about this mother. Jewel was like a dry sponge, so thirsty for water. Her mother offered her water but it was not a fresh source of water. Polluted water. I hope she stays away from that woman. That was a hard lesson for Jewel to absorb but she can be her own water source now. I have watched her dad on a reality program that was on for several years. He wasn't the primary person of interest but the bother of the primary family's patriarch. His personality, the brother's, is exactly the opposite of her father's. It is so ironic as she stated that a number of children are raised by the same parents or parent, yet they cope with it so differently. Some are determined to heal their lives while others are locked in an eternal struggle with the past. I hope she had the opportunity to find solace with her uncle's family and her cousins. I've no idea if it still on. It was clear her father is a perfectionist. It deeply saddens me to learn of her story. I saw one episode when she came to see her dad and I believe she had a child and perhaps was pregnant. It was a very touching reunion. They made some awesome music together which they enjoyed as I'm sure the audience did. Clearly, they loved one another. It is a terrible thing to live with Two Dads...in One Person. His guilt is VERY LIKELY, one would Think, Overwhelming. As a retired RN, I felt there was a sadness in him one often sees with Alcohol fueled broken relationships. That underlying sadness and guilt seemed evident to me without knowing the story. She has a Lovely Soul and a She is a beautiful woman. She now has what she needs, the knowledge and tools to raise her own children so much sweeter and purer for them and for herself. And then, THERE IS HER GREAT TALENT!

Dr. Ramani, I just realized about a month ago that I was controlled most of my whole entire life then your podcasts started showing up, and I have been watching them ever since. My mom was the messenger between my grandma, and grandpa, and had no freedom to do anything as a child like spend 1 night at a friend's house. She had to take care of her younger siblings, and wasn't able to marry who she fell in love with, so she married my dad just to get out of the house. I grew up mocked that I had ear stuck out more than another,, teased, and called things like a shameless hussie or it was bad that I looked more like my dad. I couldn't become a brownie, play instrument, or make any decisions like if I wanted, like to wash my hair, not get it cut, or pick out my own clothes until after 6th grade. Until this day I still won't even let my ears show even though I'm thankful that I have good hearing which matters to me more. I was told that even if my dad said that I could do something that I still couldn't listen to him, so I left home the first time at age 13, and kept it up until age 18 which was when my parents got divorced. I moved out of state at that time thinking that if I stayed it would never be any better, and I would have to believe that I would never amount to nothing like I was being told. I married to young after that at the age of almost 20,, and had 3 children with my 1st husband. I was so happy to finally feel like I had purpose in life, but that marriage ended with my children, and I being abandoned when they were only ages 3, 5, and 7. I had to walk to get my groceries, clean houses, and babysit to make ends meet with no child support. . Thank God my inlaws at the time were supportive, and helped us a lot.I stayed single for 13 years, and vowed to be there for my children so that they would know that I would never leave them. My mom called me one day while I was still married after I had my 2cd child, and said that I was selfish for not staying in touch, and I mentioned to her that I just needed to be treated for the person that I am, and she said that she could do that, I replied, you can? She said yes, so we made up for lost time, and remained close until she died last year. I remarried after after being divorced for 13 years, and learned how to drive at the age of 35, then worked my way up to owning my own business, but unfortunately I lost my only daughter, because she lost her mind with addictions, and then being killed by a hit, and run driver which no one was ever convicted for. So after 45 years in that state my husband, and I moved to a better climate state. We'd been married nearly 20 years by then. Once there, he decided on wanting to learn to fly a 2 seater airplane, which ended up with the instructor, and he being killed the 1st time of night flying in 2020, right when covid hit, and we only lived there 2 years. Being devastated, I made the choice between going back to where my 2 son's live or move somewhere that suit me best for my well being. I ended up moving to where my deceased husband grew up, since his sister lived there, I trusted her, and I've known her for over 23 years. My oldest son is married to a narcissist, I don't know what type, and I've commented on a couple of your podcasts about this. My son, and his wife have 2 daughters, plus her mom is also living with them. His wife was sexually abused as a child along with 2 other girls, it started at the age of 8. Once this was found out the man was imprisoned, and ended up dying there. One girl went to a mental hospital for the rest of her life, another went on with her life, and my daughter- in-law has majorr issues along with feeling like a person is like a piece of luggage or something. I figured this out when I made a surprise visit to congratulate my son for being with his company for 20 years. The trip about killed me, she tried to sabotage everything, because it wasn't all about her, but I wasn't taking the bait, and I could see that she didn't like that it wasn't getting to me even though she'd have an airplane movie on or her kids were playing airplane games on there devices. What really made me sick is after I returned back home, was the comments that I would remember her saying, like she told her 19 year old while I was sitting there,, that quote, ( you just use your friend to get to go to expensive baseball games, and things, right ,) and she said yes Mom. So now that I'm back home my son says that my 19 year old granddaughter isn't responding to my texts, because her mom is reading them. My other granddaughter will be graduating next year, and I may go back, but with low contact like talking about the weather, but only for a short visit if at all. I hope that neither of my son's 2 daughters grow up being like their rmother. I've been sick since I've returned, I'm dizzy, had to stay in bed for 3 1/2 weeks off, and on, and have made a doctor's appointment for the end of this month like you'd mentioned that it's a good idea. I was in counseling at the senior center for loosing my past husband in the plane crash for awhile. I had heard of the term narcissist, but it never sunk in until now on how it has effected my life. Thank God I listen to my intuition if something isn't feeling right. Once I get further along I hope to subscribe to your sessions or Jewel's. Thank you both for all that you do!❤

This was a brilliant interview with Ms Jewel. I recall her fame in the 80s. I grew up in Fairbanks/Nenana/Anchorage, so I felt that 'last frontier' connection with her on the radio. But, after my life of horrendous malignant narcissistic abuse from my mom (I was on the streets by 15 as well), I too have come full circle. Her words are melodious, sincere and powerful. Her mind's view - it's aim and the dusting off of the problem while still being connected to the hurt is amazing. Bravo, Ms Jewel. I pray your son grows to know you aren't just his hero, but many other people's, as well.

She hit the nail on the head with how you deal with your anger and resentment towards the narc, you cannot let it consume you. Especially when you are still having to live with them. I do get angry but I choose not to stew. I either reinforce my boundaries or I create new ones, but I refuse to allow myself to hate the narc, because I don't want to live like that.

Ooooo…”I’m not broken. I just need to do a loving archeological dig into who I am…” damn good line…
And I love how she looks at anxiety. Considering that anti-anxiety meds are the number one water pollutant in most major metropolitan areas, I wonder if people can learn to deprogram themselves like she’s done…to use anxiety as an ally versus a symptom that needs to be suppressed and treated, versus actually digging deeper into the sick programming that evokes these symptoms. I think when we can start doing that, then we quit creating a world modeled on these narcissistic social models of bonding.

@@VioletEmerald yes!! My favorite part is:
“I hit the bottom when I reached the top
But I never knew it was you who was breaking my heart
I thought you had to love me
      But you did not
      Yes a heart can hallucinate
If it's completely starved for love
It can even turn monsters into
      Angels from above
You forged my love just like a weapon
And you turned it against me like a knife
You broke my last heart string
      You opened up my eyes”

Her mother saying, "I'm just so glad that I get to go back to just being your mother." made me freeze in horror. I heard a person unrepentant, and lacking empathy with empty words . To her daughter that she had abandoned as a child and financially ruined, she seemed oblivious what effect her actions had on her daughter. It was like a horror movie monster wedging it's foot in the door just as you're trying to slam it shut. I related to so much of Jewel's story. It is so difficult when it is family but you really have to take care of yourself and remove people who are detrimental to your mental health. I'm a pro at ghosting, I'm still too reactive to trust myself with a more direct approach. Still a lot of baggage to rummage through.

This is something that really comes from the heart and soul. I'm a musician and writer part-time. I used my skills in maths etc to become an engineer and escape the problems my home gave me. This is where my income comes from.
Save your soul and the lyrics of that song stayed with me for many years, & her intuition on stage. My issues have been pretty bad but obviously nothing in comparison. I'm starting to use the VR from Jewels site.
I knew with everything in me that I would be, and still have to be the only one to save myself. A long way to go. But she really does hold a light. I'm fiercely grappling with how to deal with the zing-zang of the mother that caused me so much struggle. But also wonderful things.

It's so heartbreaking when you realize your family is incapable of loving you. We have to decide if we can love them knowing they can't love us back. Accept their limited selves and protect ourselves psychologically. Seek love and validation in healthier places. And thank you @Dr.Ramani, not only for your brilliant work that I have been following for over a decade now and that helped me put words and clarity to what I have been confronted with, but for creating a platform in which all of us survivors of (narcissistic) abuse are put centered to the conversation instead of (only) focussing on the abusers behaviour.
If surviving the abuse is the happy end of a wicked fairytale, it’s important to help us understand, what the “ever after” should/could look like! I’m grateful beyond words to your resilience, courage, empathy and strenght!
And to all of us happiness rebels, may we all wash the mud of our golden loving souls!❤️✨

$100,000,000.00 is such a large amount of money to go missing over 8 years before (or after?) Jewel's mother abandoned her. How many times did Jewel's mother abandon her? The problem with having a parent who is prone to fits of rage to consider is chances are they are covert good at triangulating others against one another far more than people realize when they are under the impression that parent only has poor self-control while being an addict or whatever else too.

My takeaway: Her mom reminded me of toxic corporate America. How heinous when it's your mom.
    Jewel's a warrior. Wow!!!

I was so impressed with this interview with Jewel. Good job to both of you, Dr Ramani and Jewel. I came to appreciate how intelligent, thoughtful and well spoken Jewel is. I immediately got Jewel's audiobook 'Never Broken' and was thrilled that she narrates her life story. It is an amazing story of survival and resilience, and how Jewel became the JEWEL that she is. Thank you Dr Ramani for doing this interview.

'willfully tricking myself' . . . that is SUCH a good term she spontaneously used. i've willfully tricked my self into believing i wasn't being duped & someone cares when all along i was their assigned consumer serf, or something. i personally can say i've 'willfully tricked' my self into believing that someone 'loved' me--but it was a commercial exchange in their mind, they weren't landing on 'love.' that kind of thing. i LOVE jewel!! we went thru a hospice situation w/my own dad in his house in dec (& he passed) but 'jewel' kept coming up repeatedly on his google tv after i'd 'set it up!' nutz. my relatives had to get sick of me singing her songs to the tv late @ night as we all tended to my dad. i like 'intuition' best, b/c i DON"T 'follow my own mind' to reach my intuition :) . . .

yeah & still sometimes I thought Dr. R cut her off b4 Jewel finishes her thought so I wasn't sure wat Dr. R was agreeing w/.
Like @ 29:09 wen Jewel said "my job was to learn how to heal; the most rebellious thing u can do...." wen Dr. R said "it is" & THEN Jewel finished her thought "...is to figure out how to be happy"
So I don't know if Dr. R was agreeing that healing was the most rebellious thing u can do instead of the figuring out how to be happy being the most rebellious thing u can do which I think was way Jewel was actually saying.
& I think Dr. R did the same thing another instance

What a wonderful interview. For Jewel to forgive her dad, while still holding him accountable is such a blessing for her and a lesson for others. All the ways that she shares the way she dealt with both of her manipulative parents is extremely helpful to those of us who dealt with dysfunctional families. Realizing they were hurt by their parents doesn't excuse their abusive behavior, but it helps us understand how to make peace with them. I have so much respect for Jewel for cutting her losses with her mother and not having any further contact with her.

it's so heartbreaking to learn that your own family is really incapable of loving you and deeply caring about you. that they are so incapable of ever really loving and really really deeply caring about you. of deeply caring about you.

I’ve loved Jewel’s music since high school but in all this time I never knew how wise she was. A beautiful woman with great voice and can write lyrics and she’s wise as a Shaolin master too. I’m just stunned.
