I think you are reading a bit too literally into what Bjorn said. Bjorn always wanted to be askeladd's friend. He followed him because he looked up to him like a mentor figure and even in earlier episodes we hear him complain about Askeladd not talking to him more. He was truly hurt when Askeladd said he hated the danes since he of course was one, but even past that he chose to give his life to Askeladd.
It was only in his final dying moments that Askeladd confirmed what Bjorn wanted, that Bjorn was truly Askeladds only friend. Potentially his only friend in his life considering askeladds backstory as well. I honestly doubt Askeladd ever hated Bjorn.
I am unsure. I think Askeladd did hate the Dane part, which was hius trigger, that is why I think it is ambiguous. =) I really needed some more Björn background, though. He was really interesting. =
Whether or not Askeladd did consider Bjorn a friend, the fact that he said it shows his capability for compassion
@@storieswithstylea significant reason why Bjorn saying he wanted to be Askeladd’s friend was important. Is that companionship/friendship was a big theme in Paganism and the Sagas of which the series is telling
Bjorn wanted to die in battle so he can go to Valhalla
nah i love how simple and pure Bjorn's motivation was
Askeladd's relation to Bjorn was pure. Both men respected the other. Askeladd hated the Danes, but made an exception for Bjorn - 'one of the good ones' if you will.
Askeladd trusted him to the end, and you can't trust someone you hate (indeed he also trusts Thorfinn, who he doesn't hate.) -- even when he was testing his men for allegiance, he used Bjorn as a foil to do those tests, because he knows Bjorn is good for it.
In any case, this scene makes me tear up every time.
The thing I noticed is that Bjorn reached out for Askeladd instead of his sword. Bjorn and Askeladd never dueled before or desired to. He has happy and lived to follow Askeladd into battle which is why his final thought was seeing him from behind in battle. Its confirmed in the manga without spoiling anything.
That´s such a important detail because Vikings believed they only reach Valhalla if they die in battle ( that is also why Thorkell said to Askeladds people that they should take their swords and die fighting). But Bjorn decided to not grab his sword and reach Valhalla while laying in the snow. His dedication was not to the fight or Valhalla in the end, but to Askeladd
@@PentragonCosplay Well I wouldn't go as far as saying his dedication was to Askeladd over battle and Valhalla as that was what he lived for but it is very significant he reached for him instead. He valued them equally as Askeladd was essentially his tool to war. You can even consider him being Bjorn's true weapon as it made him stronger with his guile, strategy, and tactics. I took significance from the reach because when they killed Ragnar he asked to die with his sword in his hand which they denied him.
The word you’re looking for is crossbow and York is in the northeast of England.
Interestingly; that duel between Askeladd and Bjorn was a demonstration of true love, in the sense the priest always speaks of. It serves as a juxtaposition to the pointless hatred behind Thorfinn's motivations for his duel. They are both duels, but one's character is entirely different.
Sadly no armor they gave her would likely stop a crossbow from that distance. Chainmail or gambeson wouldnt be enough. Maaaaybe if she wore both, but even then, crossbows are notorious for a reason.
Bjorn's death is so saddening
Yes your ritht here l fell şad for her him l hope he rest in peçe
6:30 crossbows actually weren’t a big thing back then. You can see it by he confused gaze of the woman that stood next to the assassin. Not until way later we will hear (in the manga) through another important character that crossbows are pretty rare
BTW funny that you mention it, but there actually is a VinlandSaga Live Action show in Japan!
Bjorn wanted to die in a fight against a warrior so he would go to valhalla
❤
thorfinn isn't the most interesting character...yet
