    His hips--and ankles--were his greatest threat. They gave him the capacity to shift directions and then accelerate like no one else in the game. Barry Sanders IMO is the best running back of all time. and what's crazy, is that he isn't that fast, not for the NFL.. he'd get caught from behind, but his accelleration is the fastest i've ever seen.. that first 15yds of speed burst he had was mind blowing.. then he was also incredibly strong, (notice the size of his thighs). and maybe the best balance i've ever seen as well.. The great Rod Woodson tore up his knee trying to tackle Barry. He was like a pinball, might run 20 yards laterally to get a 5 yard gain, but it was the most exciting 5 yard gain you'd ever see. Trying to tackle Barry Sanders was like trying to tackle a 5' 8" bowling ball and that is why he was so hard to bring down. John Madden said during one game he covered with the Lions playing that if you missed Barry Sanders when you tried to tackle him, but missed to just stay where you are and he will likely be back again during the same play and you will get another chance at tackling him. If he had not retired early he would own ALL the rushing records and the career yardage total would very likely be over 20,000 yards. He would have broken Walter Payton's career total yards before Emmit Smith did. Barry had a sense of balance that nobody else has ever had and the ability to change direction on a dime. I was not a Lions fan, but I also never hated them and even when they played my favorite team I enjoyed watching Barry run because he was just so much better than anyone else.

    I met Barry at Lions training camp in 1991 and got him to autograph a football card. The guy is as quiet and humble as it gets. In person he's 5'7', maybe 5'8" and his legs are bigger than my torso... we're talking literal tree trunks. Barry's just built different.
    Rumor is that the Cowboys defense would practice by chasing live chickens because that's the only way they could remotely simulate and prepare to defend him.
    That run at 7:07 against Tampa, I was sitting in the corner of the endzone he ran to, about 20 rows up. In person it happened so fast that if you blinked, you'd miss it.

So squaring up for a solid tackle was almost impossible. He could change direction so dang fast. Also take note of how low he runs even for his size. Quicker and stronger than Reggie Bush.
    Side note: Barry Sanders I’ve heard is a great dude and real humble. Notice he never did anything in the end zone.

  • @petebrown6356
    @petebrown6356 Год назад

    One thing about his numbers....he played before the horse collar rule came into effect. Many times he was tackled by the defense grabbing the back of his collar. He was STRONG...legs of steel. Start, accelerate, stop, change direction, accelerate - this is why nobody could catch him, when you dive for him - he's no longer there. So you can't tackle what you can't catch. If you get one hand on him that isn't enough. You needed TWO players getting TWO hands on him.
    Every time he got the ball you just waited, anything was about to happen. It was a privilege to watch his career. Every fan of every team in the NFC North breathed a sigh of relief when he retired, they were all terrified of him because every week was a highlight reel. I didn't say "the Lions game is coming on", I'd say, "the Barry Sanders Show is coming on".
    The bigger the opponent the worse he made them look. It was unreal - I doubt they'll be another quite like him.

    The Thing about Sanders most people do not realize is, you could hold him to nothing all game and some how he would just break one. I mean you could have the perfect game plan, stop him every play and boom, he would break a long run or score. You could not stop him for a full game.

    Excellent reaction! I'm going to have to watch this a little closer to see how many defenders he embarrassed that are now in the HoF. The first run through, I counted 8.

    That single season in college was his only season as a starter. His first two years, he backed up Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas

    Barry always just handed or tossed the ball to the referee. He acted like it ain't the first time or last time he will see endzone. True legend..

    Barry Sanders, the only man to have 10 consecutive 1000 yd seasons. Barry would put anyone on the spin cycle. He could start and stop at will and move side to side as fast as he could go forward and back. Barry has no equal.

    Love yall page fam. The best rections right now in the game! Got a new sub from me. Yall Should check out Barry's son's highlights Barry Sanders jr. He decided not to go pro and the highlights are only from high school but they are entertaining none the less. It's a shame cause he moves just like his pops. He didn't start in college because he palyed behind Christian McCaffrey. Also another name to check out is Jack Tatum. He played for the Raiders. They call him the assassin. Keep up the good work guys!

    His legs where tree trunks hence the jukes and agility now try to tackle that at 5'8" low center of gravity and explosive speed in three steps. Tackleing Barry Sanders after 3 steps was very difficult. They had 2 literally tell their secondary to stay home in case Barry changed direction and came back to their side of the field.
