      It's not so bad if the digipaks have CD trays, although it's going to get worn and beaten up sliding in and out of the shelf over time. The worst thing are the digipaks/digibooks where the CD is loose in the cardboard/paper sleeve like a vinyl replica and you slide/pull it out. At least have a f'in plastic tray for the CD to sit in

      "Old" digipaks were good at least to very good and excellent though. Quite often "limited editions" with elaborated/extended artwork, bonuses etc., and very good quality of paper/carton, plastic trays etc. Still more vulnerable to damages and different in sizes, so, have to keep them separately mostly 🙂

    I have 35,000 plus records and when the "A" section filled up, I had to move thousands to records.. At some point, I saw a video that changed my life. Now I have each record numbered and put in a database. Artist, Album Title, Year, Genre, Record Label and two columns for extra information. Now, when I bring home a bag of records, I just add them to the database, slip the corresponding number into the plastic outersleeve and add them to the end of the collection. It has saved me sooooo much time.

    For sorting, I have my studio albums in chronological order by year and have separated my jewel cases and my cardboard cases. I also have tried doing this with my compilation, soundtrack, singles, and live albums, but I just stopped as it's harder to figure out as I went for the earliest song of each artist, except for the soundtrack, singles, and live albums as they're easier to put in chronological order by year. My jewel case collection starts with Please Please Me and my cardboard case collection starts with Abbey Road. The only thing I've done differently with my cardboard cases is that I kept the compilations with my studios.

I have all my LP's in alphabetical order by artist and then by release date within each artist. 12" singles are also arranged by release date right behind the parent album they were released from! LIVE albums are also included within each artist according to release date. An example would be Donna Summer's 1978 "Live & More" album is between her 1977 studio album "Once Upon A Time" and her 1979 studio album "Bad Girls". I really like keeping all releases by each artist together by release date.

    Those 5 cds in 1 package are sometimes mastered differently. So one should get the standalone cd as well.

    • @titanisback1
      @titanisback1 3 месяца назад +1

      A lot of those 5 in 1 releases, especially from Europe, are using low quality MP3s as their source since they can't get genuine versions from the studios. I try to stay away from those as much as I can but a few have snuck into my collection.

    • @jimmycampbell78
      @jimmycampbell78 3 месяца назад

      They are usually the original master. The 5 in 1s are usually classic artists/bands from the 1960s/1970s/1980s, some are even branded as 'original series' because of this. The audio difference you are detecting is that you would usually be buying a CD reissue and ''remaster' when you buy the standalone CD, so the sound quality is usually more clear and fresh.

    • @DorianPaige00
      @DorianPaige00 3 месяца назад

      @@jimmycampbell78 It depends on what they use or who remastered, how loud, and if there are drop-outs. "Drop-outs" are unacceptable and when they remaster, anything is possible. Personally I wished they'd take the best cd and make a copy which would be identical.
      However, I've seen and heard many times where the wrong mix was used. There are working mixes, single mixes, remixes and unfinished versions that have emerged often by mistake and unmarked as such. There should be a comparison to the original which frequently does not happen. Motown and Stax are notorious for using unmarked mastering. Stereo, mono, extended, remix, fake-stereo all emerge without disclosure. Some albums came out in stereo while others were in mono. Some are in both and some are in an incorrectly marked sleeve. Much of this is era dependent like 1960's. Another issue is that indie labels often used the majors for single mixes and distribution but never got their single masters back. They'll typically remaster a single version using the album mix in attempt to make the single mix not realizing that it's the wrong version. They would need the stems which they likely don't have as either they don't care or they didn't accurately listen.

    I will say this about live archival releases, I put them at the end of the artists collection and then organize them by date of show. This includes bootlegs as well. I had to do this for the Stones because I didn't like how the archival releases were disrupting the flow of their original catalog. That said, if the live album was released officially in that flow (Get Yer Ya Yas, Love You Live, Still Life, Flashpoint, etc.) I keep those with the rest of the studio albums because I believe that tells the story.

Lou Reed also is also on several movie soundtracks. Do you file the soundtrack in the movie soundtrack or Lou Reed section? I spend most of my CD shopping time and $ filling holes in my collection.
    I just completed my Thin Lizzy, except for the Box Sets, which I'm struggling to justify. They're hundreds of dollars on eBay and I can get them digitally. I also downsized from a house to a condo after my kids left the nest, so space is at a premium. Same for the UFO collection. I have the Live Sightings box, but the Strangers in the Night Box is excessive, although a "mere" $79. All those "Anniversary Deluxe Edition" CDs are a huge expense and I have to be VERY discriminating in which ones I get. I don't care about demos or alternate takes. If they have a live CD then that usually gets my attention.
    I store my CDs alphabetized by Artist name and then chronologically. No genre distinction. I will put legacy live releases with the album that the tour is associated with. KISS soundboards, for example. Thin Lizzy has had a few of those. Still Dangerous and UK Tour '75 come to mind. It's a great hobby, but it's also a cursed one...
    Great video, guys!

    All the records are alphabetical…. Solo artist goes in by last name. I don’t go as far as to breaking down the genres, everything is together. I do separate soundtracks and compilation type CDs and Christmas stuff also goes separate.
    Once I got them alpha’d it’s chronological, and that includes live records and when artists do best ofs or greatest hits. When the re-release or the expanded version or the anniversary comes out, I generally keep that to the year it was put out… example… Motley Crue re-released their catalog like 5 times…. I rebought each of them everytime… they’re all places in the wall at the year they were released. Live records of it’s a 2024 release of a 1984 show… goes under 2024. I absolutely do not shove band members solo stuff under the band… I LOATHE seeing that in record stores finding Slash in the GnR section, drives me nuts. If a solo artist puts out an album under said name and includes “band” in their name… it goes alpha as a band… like Alice Cooper Band goes under “A” while Alice Cooper goes under “C.” I not as OCD with the hype sticker. I used to be insane with the white sticker they’d often put on top of the disc as a security measure to keep people from popping open the packaging and robbing the disc. Box sets vs individual discs… I’ll buy both also. Box sets I do keep separate. If there is a regular jewel case and an expanded digi-pak… often I get both. I’ll also attempt to grab the imports if there is added or different tracks. Or different artwork. Effing absolutely music collectors are OCD!!!!

    I don't think it's Amazon that messes up the cases it's the shipping. They should be more careful!

      Amazon not adding enough protection to keep them from getting damaged during shipping is Amazon’s fault. It’s why it’s on them to take them back and provide a replacement when damage during shipping occurs.

      @@BrendonSnyderthe last few brown packages from Amazon I've received lately have no white foam at all just a flimsy paper bag.

    I don’t see the point of putting the hype sticker loose in the packaging. I put them back on the front cover. I feel most don’t do this so it’s rare to see albums still with hype stickers on.

    I know you guys mean well, and I enjoyed the video, but please be careful about how you talk about OCD. Severe cases like I had can ruin lives, cause depression, anxiety, and other illnesses, and can lead to hospital stays and even suicide attempts. Imagine not being able to leave your house, for example, because you have irrational thoughts that someone might harm you, or that you might harm someone. Having things in order is not OCD, the illness basically ruined every aspect of my life until I fully understood it and found the right medication and therapy for it. But as said, it took me years to understand it, so I don't blame you guys for not either. Thanks

      Nah. I think you’re being way too sensitive. Just because some people suffer with OCD in a serious way, it doesn’t mean those sufferers own full usage of the term. Please don’t police other people’s language.

      @JLKeener77 Google OCD. In the west it will only be diagnosed as that if it interferes with your life for at least an hour a day and causes significant distress. It is identified as one of the top worst mental illnesses. Would you say you are a bit... 'insert another severe mental illness'.

    I'm Anal about my collection apabetical by artist all no matter what type of music they are. from the first album to the last archival albums are cataloged by when they came out not when they were made. the other thing I'M ANAl about and am trying very slowly to fix is rebuying the albums that are from a record club or a promo. I want all my albums as they would be if I purchased them in the store. my letter A is the only letter so far that I have completed. one last thing the only albums not in my collection abc order are buy complete collection of every Number one album on the billboard 200 from 1963 to the present (in order from 1963 to today) and my box sets that don't fit with the regular CD's.
    also my soundtracks are a to z by movie and my compilations are in two sections first the comps with newly recoded music a to z and then the comps with the previously released music a to z. if they have both whatever has more.

    10" records are the absolute worst. Especially bands that release 2X10" instead of a 12" LP. Grrrr!

    Boxsets of CDs that are not available for stand alone purchase. Do you buy two box sets just to have them available on your wall?

    Anthony likes it dim so you don't see the scratches. (LOL)
    Do you have the "nice price" stickers too? How about more to play, less to pay? And when you play it, say it! (LOL)
