    the scary thing is that they toned down how bad radiation poisoning is so they could show it in this episode

    • @DJKuroh
      @DJKuroh 8 месяцев назад +3

      Not necessarily. Things like the babies absorbing the radiation from the mothers or the people themselves being too radioactive to touch isn't true. You had to stay away because you yourself could kill them as their immune system was failing.
      They also had to speed up some of the symptoms to increase the gravity of the effects and visually amp up some of the "decay" look of the body to be more visually impactful.
      But, it's a show, and they are honest with the things they changed to increase tension, just like the list of corrections at the end just to say "yes we know what really happened."
      Just like how the copter crash happened, but not in the circumstance they showed (doing a drop).

      @iainsteele5737 Watch any number of videos where nuclear engineers or nuclear physicists reacted to Chernobyl. Heck, watch the video of an actual Chernobyl doctor reviewing clips and giving honest critiques on certain things they had to amp up or embellish a bit.
      Or not, it doesn't really matter. 🤷🏾‍♂️

    The sheer body horror presented in this show almost seems too unreal to be possible... and that's what makes it so scary. It *is* real, and it's far more horrific than any fictional horror film could show. I can't possibly imagine what these poor men went through as they died, and we can only hope that humanity has learnt from this and doesn't make the same catastrophic mistakes so easily again so more people don't have to suffer the same fate.
    Then again, we never have been very good at learning from history...

    • @iKvetch558

      Only the Soviets were insane enough to build RBMKs with no containment structures for generating power, as far as I know, nobody has ever made the same errors, so pretty much everybody else's nuclear power program has already learned all there is to learn from the Soviet nuclear power program.

    When Lyudmilla hugs her husband Vasily in the hospital, I love how the camera pans around them with the sun light flashing. It's a way of showing in that moment Vasily is blasting his wife with the radiation he has, like a death ray.

    • @StarkRG
      @StarkRG 8 месяцев назад +1

      That isn't really how it works, of course, but I guess that's what the director wanted us to think?

    • @Nobli82
      @Nobli82 4 месяца назад +1

      After his contaminated clothing removed and him thoroughly washed, Vasily was no longer a threat to his wife. Radiation poisoning was not that well understood at that time. But no, Vasily was definitely not turned into a radioactive fuel rod. It was more of the other way round: as the radiation destroyed his bone marrow and immune system, it was rather everybody else being a threat for him, as he could not fight back the smallest infection.

    Craig Mazin became a hit maker for HBO first this excellent mini-series Chernobyl. Then the adaptation of The Last Of Us. This mini-series is phenomenal this episode and the next are the most brutal and heartbreaking. And apparently in real life the radiation poisoning was much much worse, but they had to tone it down for the show scary😱

    Something the makers of the show changed for entertainment purposes in this episode is the way the coal minister and coal miners interacted. The Deputy Minister of Mining met with the miners, and basically gave them 24 hours to be ready to go to Chernobyl...there was no humorous coal dust on the suit moment. The meeting between the Minster and miners is covered in the History vs Hollywood article I recommended...as is the fact that the miners did not work in the nude.

    When I read a review of this show by a nurse that actually took care of some of these victims, she said they didn't look like they are portrayed in the film. She said it looked like the art department was given free rein and just went crazy. So, it may not look like they actually did, but it sure conveyed the horror of the situation to the viewers.

    I was the same as you... for some reason, I never watched this show when it aired even though every one of my friends was raving about it.
    Then it was available on the entertainment channel on a 10 hour flight to Tokyo.
    I binge-watched all 5 episodes on the flight there, and it horrified me.
    So much so that I binge watched all 5 episodes again on the flight home 2 weeks later.
    2 days after that I went and bought the blu-ray box set.
    I've now lost count of how many times I've watched it.

    "Chernobyl's Heart" is a 50 minute documentary that covers an area of Ukraine that has 2nd and 3rd generations of the people who moved away from that area. I recommend it so you have an idea of the actual fallout and the DNA deterioration that "could be" occurring. Also that there's been data collected about it long-term.
