Was a great kit. Used to be a sandy colour (better), and back in the day was obviously much cleaner. Always loved the mix of helmets and caps and the great mix of poses. The prone rifleman firing was one of my favourites.
Yet another great video review. Another favorite set for me also. I find these guys are very handy for conversions too. I reckon they're the best set of figures Airfix ever did to be honest. Great sculpt and very good poses.
Cracking kit, cracking review! Swastika is considered illegal in most forms in Germany, law changed in 2018 RE games and Swastikas but it is slow to apply in practice. Obviously 80 million Germans, that is quite a market. Wehrmacht... probably OK to pronounce it in German, it sounds like VER MAHT ... VER like VERNON... no equivalent for 2nd syllable in English I think.
I don't know if you are aware of it but there was a partial (very partial) introduction of this set to the range before this set was actually released as two of this set's sub-machine gunners were added to a late release of the original set 1 Afrika Korps. I remember being very pleased to find the pair in a brand new box of type 1 that I had bought, massively superior to the type 1 as they were; I knew they were a shrunken version of the 1/32 figures which I already had. I dearly hoped that it augered a full new set and was more than delighted when it did and an even better set than the 1/32 at that. This would now be impossible for me to prove unless it is common knowledge or someone still has them on the sprue and I guess that anyone finding them in there loose at a later date who didn't know this had been done might assume that the type one and type two had simply become mixed up in someone's collection (which I am sure they do). The later issue of 1/72 Japanese Infantry also had a single shrunken 1/32 prone machine gunner added though they never got to the full type 2 set. I think this limited practice gives some insight into Airfix's thinking at the time, keen to bring improvements in even before the sets were finished perhaps.
Very different than the Africa Corps original poses/colours I had/still have as a boy back in the 70's. But I only have a few left, along with boxes of all sorts of others, arabs, cowboys, WW1 germans, Napoleonic, paratroopers, Russians, etc etc. My mum used to buy them from the NAAFI or military shop on the camp when my dad was in the army.
Hi, great reviews. Just started out modelling for. 1/72 scale and these seem the best quality I researched so far. Other 1/72 figures seem to have exaggerated proportions, I guess this is for war gamers ? As you can tell I’m starting out 😊 thx
This is a second generation kit. The original had 2 men with pick axes, only 2 surrendering, 2 anti tank guns with loaders, no figures with helmets, shorts, or machine guns, an officer figure arms akimbo, and all around different poses, more akin to the 8th Army poses, the prone figures were straight out, I forget the rest....
I had that Britain's Jerry soldier when i was a kid and the similarities are certainly there. I had only a few Britain's because they were way too expensive... IIRC i could buy two boxes of Airfix soldiers for the price of one Britain's and still have some change.
Great review, I still have a set from the 1960s and it has men with picks aswell, otherwise they are the same but I think the newer models are a better quality plastic, many thanks from down under in Wairoa New Zealand
This was one of my favorite sets I had as a kid, but they came in a light tan color in the mid '70s. I never liked the guy surrendering, always thought it was a waste of men.
RedIceBlueFire hehhe I played with the, as a kid too I never had the surrendering ones but I hated the ones that had no action poses as when I played with them I had no purpose for them lol
@@karolzawislak2064 Exactly, I remember I never like the guys lying down either, so I would just use them as dead or injured...at least I got some use out of them, hehe.
I don't believe the US Army had any special uniform for the North African campaign. The only difference between them in the desert and in Europe was they were still probably wearing the canvas gaiters on their boots which I think were pretty much discarded by D-day. Painting them or not painting them is probably all you have to do on whether the soldier is wearing the gaiters.
@@markcollins9903 nothing to be sorry about Mark! Just glad I know what you meant no mate, it's obvious now that I know!!! What a plonker I am sometimes! I'm really happy you are watching my videos!

The weird thing is that on the old and modern German paratroopers in 1/32 scale their helmets retain the swastika on them on the box art.
Great review, great set. Some of the best poses ever made in that set. I've never seen that color before I'll have to get a few sets. thanks again.
Great colour for this set and its of excellent quality!!
Really great video again mate nice poses very fine detail, what ive found is the smaller the scale the better the quality
Its certainly true in these last 3 kits we have seen, quite amazing really mate!
Nice review again! Wish i still had this set. Have a good one bud!
Great Norman!! I think for the price they are amazing!!!

To think how old these are...You just wonder where Airfix went off the boil and when? But yes these last three kits have been great Ronan.

Yes great kit Karl!
I had this set, I had thousand of 1/72 soldiers growing up as a kid, my favourite were Airfix, italeri and Strelets.
Love the bayonets on this kit

Its a fantastic set and a really good one to start my friend!
excellent review
Thanks john
I get 2 ‘late’ birthday gifts. Should I do the British 8th and this or German Infantry and American Marines or paratroops?
the 8th and the A.K. just think of the open tank Battles, both quality sets but A.K. set nudges it!
Thx!

I got my first set in 1977. They were very yellow.
I remember the old set with the officer in the Kubelwagon on the box art work.
Was that on the 1\32?
@@TOYSOLDIERREVIEW It was the 1/72 scale issue box from around late 60s to early 70s, On the artwork their uniforms look a bit green.
@@marctremblay8087 the Africa Korps uniform was olive green, it just faded with washing and sun, so it was probably a pretty accurate picture!

No problems Jed! Stay safe down under!!
Agreed, I have the 60s set also and the quality of todays plastic is far superior and shows far more detail.

I totally agree

Like your reviews but it’s 1/32nd and 1/72nd not 132 and 172 ! Does my head in
The subtitles put it in Stephen!
TOY SOLDIER REVIEW fair enough.
Plastic looks much shinier than I remember , my soldiers were a much more matt finish
Ps, watching your US M Marine vid , my set had flame thrower figures
