Wow…what a blast from the past. I had many of these. My buddy and I would build them together then make battle scenes in his mom’s garden. The Panzer was my favorite, but had a number of other ones. We couldn’t wait to get our allowances then we’d ride our bikes down the variety store to see what they had. If I remember correctly they were only about $4 each in 1978. Such great memories, thanks for posting.
I now remember having all of just two of these kits.... but seeing them here just reminded me of how I loved building them. I'm sighing with a heavy, nostalgic heart. Thank you!

All my pocket money was spent on these, I still love them now, even though I am now 57 years of age! Pocket money models! I had my favourites, such as the little Chaffinch tank, the Sherman and the little Panzers. The Tiger and the Panther were also lovely kits to build!
Here in Brazil it was prohibited to import toys in the 70s. We had only one Revell factory here - the first one outside the US, licensed. Only rich friends had Matchbox kits, which parents brought in from abroad.
*these kits had SO MUCH at such a reasonable cost, it is 100% nostalgia of my dad hiding them in a closet and giving one at a time to me.... can't go back to 1977, but I can reminisce*

It was the dioramas that brought these pieces of military history to life. They also were far better quality to assemble than revell back in the day. I seem to recall favouring then over airfix too
Genuine "pocket money" priced kits ! Loved these back in the 1970's. Plus they came with that all important diorama which helped immensely when choosing what kit to buy, so you could brag it was better than the Airfix kit your friend had just bought !. Although I could never buy the bigger kits with two vehicles in them, like the LRDG and Willys Jeep as they were dearer and sadly out of my pocket money range, as money was scarce back then . But, oh the memories this video invokes. I did buy a few of the re-boxed Revel offerings to build "just for fun and nostalgia" about 20 years ago. Great fun. Today, if this type of kit were introduced with modern tooling , they'd no doubt have a £30-£40 price tag !!
Thanks! The 1/72 scale has a huge variety of vehicles, but with a diorama base kit is very rare. Esci did that, but only big battle scenes. Italeri has launched items in this line. But they are large kits, take up a lot of space.
That was fabulous Richard, thank you. I remember being very excited when these kits first arrived, they seemed so much better than the Airfix range which I had just about exhausted. There were more than I realised looking at your video and I certainly don't have them all. I have built about half of the ones I bought, the others remain in my stash. This brought me some great memories from when I was a child. From the Quad half track to Monty's Caravan. Thanks for this. I hope it's not a dying hobby. Kind of inspires me to go and get a kit set and revive a passion I had as a lad.

Great stuff! Here's a tip: After Matchbox went out of business, Revell bought some of their molds -- including the diorama ones. So, if you see a Revell 1/76 diorama, it'll be their box, instructions and decals, but the parts will usually be genuine -- flawless -- Matchbox toolings.
I’ve recently started building & collecting these models from eBay after getting into modelling in lockdown. Even now in 2022 as a novice modeller these dioramas have a massive appeal. There’s some kits here I’ve never seen on auction sites I would love to own so will be keeping an eye for any of them! I’m also inspired by the idea for raising the bases 💡
You probably know that Revell acquired the molds (at least some of them), that are cheaper to build and you can keep the originals for your collection.

Great collection - I wish someone would remake these, but in 1/72 with diorama bases and a couple of figures - 1776 is a little too small for me, but damn, getting that base to position the vehicle on was a great way to tickle the imagination.
Matchbox did the best small scale armour kits. All came with a diorama base, and most had figures. 1/76th scale was introduced by Airfix, and also used by Nitto and Fujimi in Japan. The Purple Series kits were moulded in two colours, and the larger Orange Series kits in three colours. Tracked vehicles also had black, soft plastic tracks. Great looking models.
Thanks for the video - brought back lots of memories - I think you're only missing the Churchill AVRE. I'm racing towards retirement and as a bit of a project, I've managed to pick up the full set of Matchbox 1/76 diorama kits - really looking forward to putting them together. Incidentally, I did like the Chi-Ha mock-up at 0.33 (that would have been a nice addition to the range).

Lovely models . Missed out on these as l had a respite from modelling during the '70's but glad to see Revell are reissuing some of them . The diorama's and figures really add to the charm . Shame the originals are so pricey .
Customized! As Matchbox never released a Japanese tank in this collection, I created my own - including the box!! It's a mix of Airfix's Chi-ha 1/76 base and matchbox figures.
I love the collection. Unfortunately, while trying to get hold of the kits again (with the Revell restocks), I discovered a few of them did not make it over to Revell, or they have since retired the moulds. The Stuart tank, Panther tank, Panzer III, and German radio wagon. So these 4 kits will become very pricey I imagine. I also had no idea Matchbox released a Chi Ha kit?
This brings a tear to the eye of my 10 year old self. It's hard to tell with the T-34 if that's just bad moulding or an accurate representation of the tanks build quality... 😁

As I really like this tank, my brother produced a Matchbox style box, and I mixed parts of an Airfix 1/76 kit with parts of matchbox kits, including figures of original Japanese soldiers. In the Matchbox collection of dioramas there was never a Japanese armored car - a failure!

It's a custom Chi-Ha kkkk! My brother made the box for me! I adapted the kit from an Airfix 1/76, using Matchbox figures. They should have released one!! There is no Japanese armor in the collection - a failure! That's why I invented this one

These are small, easy to assemble. And they were cheap!
Revell keeps rotating them in the assortment. Prices still ok but not all available continuously

I had the Wespe, PZIII and PZII kits as Christmas gifts back in the 90's. Still have them to this day. Great dioramas.

Nice! I've got a Revel kit that's exactly the same as the Char b1 + FT17 diorama... though they added a little more detail and nicer molds.

Revell bought all molds back in 1991. Unfortunately they do not re-issue all of some, just a few.
I bought so many of those kits as a youngster, though, being economically minded, I did prefer the Airfix kits that came in plastic bags.

Those are nice build ups. The T-34 and Char B/Ft17 always make me wonder what a set of 1/76 scale Russian and French soldiers would look like. ☹️
