Can We Make This Rivarossi Big Boy Run Again? Sitting for 20 Years

Поделиться

  • Опубликовано: 27 дек 2022
  • I purchased this vintage big boy locomotive in an auction around a year ago and today I decided to finally take it out of the box and see if we could get it working again. I brought it over to the track to test it and it seemed to be having trouble picking up electricity.
It's possible this locomotive has been sitting for decades and many contacts have rusted over so it required disassembly and cleaning to get things going again. I'm overall impressed with the results.

Super. The drive is a lot better than I imagined, and oiling the siderods, bearings, and valve gear is very important on a locomotive like this. I like the Big Boy, but will probably not buy one for my railroad, but if one just happens to come my way, I'd find an excuse to operate it on my railroads fantrips. 💙 T.E.N.

Hi Harrison. Got my first Rivarossi Big Boy this week and was told it didn’t run. After watching your videos, I took it apart, lubed and greased it and cleaned the wheels and now its running great! In watching your video you mentioned that most of the time the cover for the top screw is always missing. Mine was also missing and managed to find a pretty good fix. My daughter bought me a plastic pen that has a “hammer” head top. The one end of this plastic hammer is the exact same size as the original. I just cut the piece off the pen and popped it right into place. If you message me I can send you a pic of this and what it looks like on the locomotive.

My current uncle has it and you won't let it go for anything maybe I'll buy it off of him who knows but they claim that there's no parts available which I heard the same thing from a hobby store. I'm glad that you are careful taking apart this locomotive because the availability of parts I bet is slim. Everything you do in these videos I do to my locomotives that's why they run so good. Three possible suggestions.
If it's brass, polish that strip between the 2 driver sets.
Check the gauge on the wheels. That front end pops up a lot when going through the street crossing.
See if you can remove the brushes and check to make sure the contact surface with the commutator is flat. Sand if it won't make them too short.

I have one of these made in mid 1970s. Mine has the dreaded mazak rot, and the chassis expanded and stretched the drivetrain so far apart it no longer connected together. Think it must be easier for you to get these engines second hand in the USA. As I have never found one in the UK for spares and repairs. So sadly it remains in its broken state.

Doesn't surprise me that a Big Boy locomotive model can haul that many cars with ease. If anything it should be able to haul even more. These models are some of the most faithful to real life locomotives, and if this model follows the normal guidelines of a Union Pacific Big Boy (which can normally haul more than 50 cars without the assistance of a diesel locomotive), it should be capable of hauling more than enough cars if the layout is big enough. It's unbelievable how insane American steam locomotives are compared to British steam locomotives.

Heres a trick for you- try dunking a problematic motor in water and running it. I race radio control cars and back in the day that was a great way to clean the coms brushes, or break them in for new motors without lots of deposits on the comm. You can use tap water, just use motor spray (brake cleaner) to clean it out. BUT with your motors I'd use distilled water. Either way direct current motors will run just fine underwater. Theres lots of youtube videos showing this. And there are still brush and comm cleaning tools sold on (bigger) rc rock crawling websites as a lot of them still used brushed motors. Just something to try! Obviously thoroughly clean the motor out after with something thats paint safe but should work well for you!

Funny enough I actually got the big boy #4005 on Christmas in a giant lot with two giant boxes that also included a forward cab steam engine and others. It was unknown how much both large boxes of trains in rolling stock were because my parents bought them at an antique store and I got it running with 20 other trains for the first time in over 3 decades and it's cool that you got the big boy to run as well again, it's also my dream HO engine since I was 7 years old and here I am at 19 finally owning one in working condition. It's a shame that in real life the original #4005 is no longer with us as it perished almost 70 years ago after derailing but there is a replica at a museum and I would assume this was like a tribute for that engine and that's why RiverRossi made it.

@@SMTMainline I wish. They're both Bachmann locomotives. Definitely tough as nails. Fired to life when I placed them on the track. I hate bachmann eztrack. You know a great place to buy new track. I'm thinking about building a layout.

    The batteries are dead 😂
It's informative to watch your videos, you know what you're doing. Good looking engine. You realize how much coal and water the BigBoy engine used in sn hour at say a steady 40 mph? Its crazy, no wonder they came out with Diesel. I found out BigBoy 4014 was converted to oil.

I did a lot of this when I was a kid, I just don’t have the patience now. BTW if you are in NJ go to Northlands in Flemington. A three hour tour, a three hour tour.

Well done and nice to see someone open them up. We used to look at 4014 and wonder if it was just going to rot
