MEGA Lot of Locomotives from Facebook Marketplace - Will Any Run?

- I was recently searching Facebook Marketplace lookout for deals on used model trains and rolling stock which is something I do every once in a while just see if anything good is being sold locally.
I wasn't finding much so I was finishing up my search when I stubled across a mega lot of 24 used locomotives for $245 USD. I could see there were a few pretty decent engines and a bunch cheaper ones.
You can't always be sure what you're buying is what's being advertised (condition, authenticity) and the photos didn't make it clear so I wasn't entirely sure what I was buying.
I wouldn't usually purchase items on marketplace though shipping since there isn't much you can do if the seller decides not to ship them however in this case I was lucky and they followed through. - Развлечения
GREAT LOT! GATX IS General American Transportation Corp. They are a leasing company that leases engines to railroads! Glad you were able to find a CN SD40-2 by Kato! Great runner at that, Katos are built tough! Glad to see you have some more projects ahead! Keep it coming !
i Agree with you man katos are very strong runners indeed especially my csx emd gp35 which it runs excellent as you saw the vid already i uploaded.
They also lease Sliding wall wagons and tank cars in europe
The thing I love most about Harrison is that he takes the time and films himself unboxing all of the stuff he buys and I have never seen anyone else do that and I thinks it’s awesome
Thank you!
@@leoross5777 I was clearly cutting away from my arms and body
Everyone seems so caught up in all of the new releases today, but you seem to be one of the few that actually care for these older models and I love it. I think it's really cool to restore the old ones.
Exactly, they are a somewhat forgotten part of the hobby.
I❤ your awvr triple seven777

I have an idea about what happened to the one with the hole burned into it. There is an old trick to making the plastic look like dented metal, it involves heating the plastic to the point of being soft and pressing something like a standard screwdriver or other similar tool with a small flat edge to cause depressions in the plastic. I'd bet someone tried that and got the plastic too hot.
Maybe someone was practising that on this one since they didn't do a very good job lol.
That’s how Tank modelers do Anti-Tank round damage to their Tanks
@@SMTMainline Quite possible.
@@jebbohanan2626 Nice, it's awesome how many tricks and such cross over between different modeling communities.
Wow that is neat.
Really super lot Harrison! I can’t wait for future videos of you fixing these locomotives, you’re really a magician in that sense! 😂
I love that you love and care for the old locomotives. I've spent my first 30 years with N gauge trains before getting into HO trains. Watching you pick up old trains and fixing them has taught me a lot about engine maintenance. Thank you so much for your channel.
It's a lot of fun getting forgotten locomotives going again.
I dont normally run the older type engines, but i really get a lot of enjoyment watching you unbox these older sometimes forgotten gems. These were made when durability was paramount and details were not so important. Keppem coming, keppem riding the high iron!!
I watch your videos with my four year old grandson and he loves watching your unboxing videos. Please count us in for your give away especially for the Go Train locomotive as he is a huge fan of Go Trains. Keep your wonderful videos coming! Cheers
Thanks, I buy the newer engines as well but there is something I really like about the stuff from the stuff made between the 1940 and 1990s.
My 4 year old adores your channel. Sometimes he does pretend videos describing his trains. I do guarantee, he starts all his presentations with “well folks.” His goal in life is to one day own a Riverossi Big Boy.
I have been a model railroader since the age of 8. I love what you are doing by adding information about the different motors and what to look for when purchasing certain engines. Keep doing what you doing, which is something that you love.
i really love trains tbh, i used to have an HO track. really love the content. keep at it.
Thanks for the video. I love watching you bring old treasures back to life. I have neither the skill nor the patience to do these things myself, but I admire the magic you perform. thank you
Love your videos SMT! I'm learning a lot from you about how to restore locomotives and am thinking about trying it on some of my own that don't run too well anymore! Thanks!
I always enjoy watching your videos on how you fix these great older locomotives, especially the steam ones. You’ve been a big help for me to troubleshoot/maintain my own…thanks!!!🤠
Love your vids man, always look forward to seeing them
I am a English modeller and have several UK locomotives. Seeing videos like this is really cool because I have never heard of these companies like GATX or locomotives like the /2. Thanks so much for these videos and hope I can get locomotives like these of my own! Have a great day!
Thanks

I've been watching the channel for a few years now I'm so glad to see the content has only got better and better keep up the great work Harrison hopefully I can make it to a live again soon
VERY VERY true
Always fun to watch what you dig out from online sales! I wasn't surprised when that Kato started up either
Thank you for continuing to share the older retro models that for many are special in that they bring back memories of one's first model locomotive received for Christmas or perhaps a birthday. I still have my Tyco F7 in top running condition with minimal service work required. The model inspired me later to return to the hobby and in my collecting enthusiasm eventually a job working as conductor and engineer on the railroads of Indianapolis Indiana. I am most fortunate to have a main line that connects with Cincinnati in my backyard which runs at least a half dozen trains a day, some rather long with distributive power. My favorite is the Amtrak passenger train which comes through at midnight. I will be checking out more of the Bachmann locomotives as I usually gloss over them. I did not know that some came equipped with can motors instead of the less desirable pancake design. Please continue sharing your finds and ability to restore those locomotives many would consider not worthy of attention.
Nice lot! That daylight would be a nice locomotive to get going again. It’s really a cool locomotive.
That is quite an eclectic mix of locomotives! Good haul considering many of them are running. Thanks for posting.
Great video, SMT! You seem to have gotten some great locomotives in there. I’m surprised so many of them ran.
This is just awesome Bob. Wow you are the greatest. I just love you're layout set up. You're an inspiration thanks
Great video smt! This lot of locomotives is larger than my whole collection 😂
I really enjoy your videos. I’ve fixed a couple locos just by watching. So thank you. Keep them coming. I am actually a locomotive engineer for CSX of 24 years. So most of my life is trains. 😂👍🚂💨
Shocked at how many of these still run! Lots of life left in these older engines. Love these videos of mystery engines and then repair vids as well. Great content!
Thank you very much!
First one out of the box is the SD40T-2. The EMD tunnel motors were developed for Southern Pacific in the 1970s to alleviate over heating from hot air being drawn in at the top of the locomotives during their trips through the tunnels in California in the Tehachapi mountains. The air intakes were lowered to frame level at the back of the locomotive for this purpose. At 2:10 That's the Athearn SW-7 mislabeled for a long time by Athearn as an SW-1500.
Fascinating history, thanks for sharing.
@@SMTMainline There's a video on You Tube that illustrates just why the tunnel motor was necessary and developed for the SD40T-2. and the SD45T-2 on Southern Pacific. I'll post the title of it here when I find it. Rio Grande had them as well.

As a newbie to model railroading I absolutely love your channel. My first locomotive I purchased (second hand) without knowing anything was an Athearn GP50 Burlington Northern... "built like a tank"! Keep up the great work!
I doubt that engine will let you down, I've got some from the 50s still running without having replaced a single part.
Great video! I live in Australia trying to start up my HO collection.
What a beautiful lot Harrison! I will tell you, your channel got me back into fixing and running model trains again. Even those locomotives that don't run seem like they can be fixed relatively easily.🙂
I am 83 and enjoy watching you repair engines. I have tried to repair a few with a little success, but I keep trying. Keep up the vedios, I was excited for you that you had so many runners in this lot.
Thanks again for your videos! Some great locomotives in this lot and some interesting questions too, the two switchers! All the best, take care!
These unboxing videos are great! Keep them coming!!
Always enjoy your videos. To my British eyes, those locos look huge, but what a great haul.
Hey SMT im a big fan. I love watching your videos and im new to the hobby. I watch all your video within the first day you post them. Thank you for getting me into the hobby! Congrats on the lot, you got very lucky!
Your videos are so interesting to watch. I'm in the planning stages of a layout and enjoy learning how to repair locos. Keep the videos coming.
Hello again it is me! I recently went to a train show and bought an old lionel great northern alco fa1 i think is what it is( i know as a matter of fact it js an alco). But because of your older video on it i was able to repair so please keep making these videos because they do infact help many people with their troubles. Keep making these videos love them too! 🎉
Great Video
Thanks to your other videos I have been inspired to create my own model railroad and expand my love for trains
Keep up the good work!
That Kato SD40 was the first model they released under their own name in HO scale. It dates from the early 1990s, I have quite a few from that period that still run like new. Great find!
I believe they worked with atlas at that time, who was also making fantastic models.
@@SMTMainline yes sir….In the late 80s Atlas GP7, C424, and RS1/RS3 were all made by Kato. The Stewart F units were Kato models as well. These SD40’s were extremely popular when they hit the market in 1991. Many of the Stewart and atlas engines were later remade with “Kato clone” drives produced in China
Loved the video! I can agree that I never see old 80's Bachmann locomotives without the wheel quartering issue, let alone running well.
It's too bad, if they had been made slightly different they probably wouldn't gave this issue.
Love seeing ur vids pop up and to see what you have found it amazes me
That was a great lot - more runners than I expected. And I bet more runners than you expected. Thanks for the video!
I love watching your show. I don't have any trains myself but I love watching you restore them and run them. Maybe one day I can get some for myself.
This is a totally random comment, but just before the end of the video, when all of the locomotives on the table are being filmed from above, the lighting in the room is catching that CN F-unit at the bottom left just right. It looks like its cab light is on, like it’s just ready to go. It sounds nuts to say inanimate objects have spirits, but they were made for a purpose. I always enjoy a good resurrection or redemption story; that’s why this channel is so good. Turning garbage into a working machine is magic, and it’s a heck of a skill you got there.
Your videos can keep me entertained for hours and the tips on models you give us are great keep up the good work
Glad to hear it!
@@SMTMainline you're welcome
What a nice variety. You certainly know all the issues that can come up with each locomotive. In my younger days I was a Lionel guy and my buddy was into American Flyer. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely love the Daylight, may not run well but would look great in a display! Another great video as always, look forward to the future restoration videos from this lot!
It's at least a decent decoration.
Quite a good lot you found! Love the paint scheme on the GO Transit F40s, also still have yet to see a Kato fail after all these years. Wonderful video as always!
Love watching these unboxing and test videos, it’s satisfying watching them start up even without any work done. You’ve inspired me to find that same MRC DC controller at my local train show last year to have a DC loop in my layout ^^ it’s still under construction but I love the idea of tuning up old DC locos.
Nice haul Harrison! I have that 2-10-2 B&O AHM loco and love it! Bought it from a friend of mine a few years back. It had been hardly run
I always enjoy watching your fearless approach to model railroad repairs...while I occasionally cringe watching your techniques you are quite successful with them...and your success has inspired me to work on some very stubborn repairs...most notably my first steam locomotive...an AHM 0-4-0 Dockside from the late 60's... I ended up completely rebuilding the motor after drilling out the rivets and replacing them with bolts...
Thanks for the shot of courage...
Rich...
Again, SMT is killin’ it! An awesome group of largely working engines, including a few higher quality ones! Keep it up!
Thank you so kindly!
@@SMTMainline No probs🔥🔥🔥
I enjoy your MEGA Lot videos. Can't wait to see more!
I enjoy your videos and your determination when working on these projects.
My nine year old son and I love your channel! Unlike many of the other train guys, you are very polite and never swear. Bless you!
I’m watching this video wile running that same exact Bachmann 4449 and it’s running perfectly
The bachmann CN F9 was the my first loco I ever had, also I'll take the CN SD40-2 😊
New to the channel, got into the hobby with my dad, as he did with his, love seeing these old locos get new life!
its surprising that some of theses older models still worked, you even had doubts that some wouldnt run but they managed to pull through, one of my dads model trains has a bent rod and a motor issue, its a real shame cause its one of the good ones, ive been meaning to get another locomotive, but cant afford any at the moment. Excited to see more of your videos to come out, they are just relaxing and lovely to have running in the background
you always find the best deals. i love watching your un boxing videos
Never cease to impress
Some oldies but goodies. Nice lot. I'm very confident you will have them up and running. From Texas
Just wanted to thank you for your content and posts. I’m recently retired from Metro North Rail Road as director of fleet maintenance . I had the entire passenger and freight fleet, loco’s, coaches, EMU’s and freight fleet under me. I’ve collected a few HO scale loco’s passenger cars and freight cars and have learned a lot from you about to what buy and what to steer away from. My next venture will be to design a small layout with the new knowledge I’ve acquired. Thanks again for your efforts, time, editing and content.
Thanks for the comment. I'm a huge fan of MTA's NH 229, I hope some manufacturer starts making them.
Good luck on the NH P32ACDM. Rare and expensive. Before I retired I came across a full D size print of Metro North FL9 blue and red paint scheme. I’m hunting for an FL7 or FL9 loco to paint. An Engineer let me run an FL9 train from Manhattan to Poughkeepsie once. I was confident but careful. Did well except for one stop. I spotted the north coach 1/2 a car length past the north end of the platform. The Conductor grumbled at the engineer but never let on it was a novice at the controls. That was 30 years ago. Can’t do that now. Thanks for replying, happy hunting.
Yes, GATX is a rental service for railways. A good deal of the tank cars I see up here in Dickinson are labelled for them.
Hi
Same over here in Germany. Lots of tank cars owned by GATX.
@@catrachocolo Well! Looks like I learned something new today! I didn't know that GATX was an international company!
I dont know what it is, but the last few days have unlocked something in my brain that DESPERATELY wants to get into locomotives.
My favorite show growing up was Thomas and Friends, and one thing I LOVED about the show was that its use of live action models. The show got me hooked onto trains more than expected; I absolutely loved seeing model engines at work in gift shops, or in displays. I probably will never be a conductor, so the closest thing I can do is start collecting. I love these videos, keep it up!
I'll be honest, i think its the wheels. Looking at the daylight, it's EXACTLY what I love to see in a locomotive
The Southern Pacific Switcher at 2:55 is an Athearn model of a Baldwin S-12. Baldwin was a very short lived company in the era of dieselization as the one thing they were good at (making steam engines) was no longer what the railroads wanted. I have the Milwaukee Road version of that S-12, and I have to say it sounds exactly like yours did when you were running it. Great haul, always enjoy coming back to see what you do next.
Thanks for the info.
Of course!
That's a nice amount of locomotives that still work.
Hopefully you'll be able to repair the ones that don't work very well.
Keep up the work, Harrison!
That's the plan
Nice haul. Really like the Kato CN. Great score. Looking forward to the repair / maintenance videos for some of these new finds!
Awesome find. Can't wait to see you make some more restoration videos with these :)
Hey SMT, I have been learning a lot from your videos on restoration of locomotives. I have put my knowledge I learned from your videos to improve my locomotives and layout, thank you. -MHKTrains
At 5:29 yes that is an sd40-2 very good locomotive
nice haul SMT love the rock locomotive also have a day light with messed up wheels just waiting to pick up a donor engine so i can get it going again keep the videos coming👍
Hay SMT Mainline your an amazing person and got me into model railroading love your videos.
Most of those run, it kind of take the fun out of it! The Go engine and the Conrail look really nice. I'll be in your contest. Send me something that is different and doesn't run. I need a challenge. Enjoy your new trains, they look like fun.
Thank you also DBtech for your TYCO repair video on broken pin, I followed your advice and procedure along with SMT to get my TYCO running!
Oh, I absolutely love your videos. I make sure to watch every single one. Thanks for always making my day.
My grandfather hand built 0 guage cabooses ... he had an amazing layout ... I myself am trying so hard to give my son the same experience I had growing up and your channel has given me alot of advice .. can't wait to make headway on my layout
I have one of those old Bachmann GS-4 locomotives (except it is registered to Lionel) that have the same problem as yours, the motor runs pretty well but I can't wait to see the video of you fixing it so I can use it to my advantage and get mines running again!
Always a pleasure watching your videos!!! What I most enjoy is seeing how different manufacturers made slight modifications to models used by everyone. It shows how they saved money and kept the hobby alive!
My son RJ loves watching your videos. His Grandfather and him have started collecting train sets.
Seems like the best lot you ever bought SMT...Happy for you!
Holy crap an upload at 4am, go to sleep Harrison 🤣
I already had to be awake to go to work lol
@@SMTMainline makes sense lmao
I love watching your videos, you inspire me to work on my old locos that I have been collecting since 1961when I got my first Tri-Ang F unit look alike I still have it and the B unit and Dummy to compete the set, it still runs but lives in a display case in pride of place along with its original carriages. I am not sure how old it is because my Dad bought it for me second hand at the time. So I love seeing you revive these old locos. This haul you bought was very good only a couple of non runners which is unusual in a lot like that. Anyway Cheers from Down under Down under (Tasmania, Australia)
I still remember getting some vintage model trains by Bachmann, Tyco, and Lionel at a model train convention a while ago. It is nice to see how these models changed over the years and how we still love them all.
They can be fun to work on if realistic performance isn't your goal.
Great video
That kato is nice 👌
We have a young son who loves trains. He absolutely loves your videos and has learned so much about model trains! We all have :) He has especially gotten in to taking his trains apart to clean and fix them because of your videos. You are awesome and make great content! Thank you!
I like this video some really cool locomotives you got there SMT keep up with the awesome videos.
I always enjoy your videos and I usually learn something.😊
Now you’ve got 3 daylights lol 😂
Right 😂
Plus a freedom train lol
SMT mainline is one of the only RUclipsrs that I could actually watch for hours.
But the advertisement 🙄
CP never really own Ex-SP tunnel motor, but some of the tunnel motor actually did end up all the way to canada, BLE own a few
Most we're SD40T-3/SD40-3 (ex-SD45T-2), some did wear CN paint scheme
It would be super cool to see some of these undecorated locomotives with custom paint themed after your channel or something like that.
Hey smt big fan I always try to watch All of your videos I always learn a lot from you taking apart locomotive's and putting them back together I have Ho layout but don't have any trains or things
Hello SMT, very good purchase! I want to thank you most though for your TYCO repair video where the gear pin was broken and replaced with a nail, I did the same thing on a TYCO I purchased (pin broke trying to free up gear) but got it running by following this procedure.
I'm glad it was helpful, it certainly helps them run a bit longer without having to replace the block.
Score. Great deal! That Kato seems to run real smooth! The 2-10-2 is sweet!
awesome! i really donlike the via rail locomotive in the blue and yellow paint scheme. it just clicks in my head. very lovley lot, cant wait to see some of the non runners run!
That daylight is still so pretty even if it doesn't get fixed. It was one of the first American steam engines I saw in action on TV as a kid in the 90s that wasnt thomas and friends lol it was love at first site for me but I never had the money to get one growing up and still being a budget fan, I'm slowly recollecting HO scale again and would love to maybe finally have a daylight to add to my new growing collection of HO scale model trains again whether you can get fully running again or not
That old Rivarossi steam loco looks sick!
The Kato CN SD40-2 makes the deal great. As far as the Athearn locos, few of them are familiar since I've owned them over the years. The first one would be the GATX SD40-2. This was part of a set from the Athearn Special Editions, and it had a matching GATX SD40-2 dummy to go with it. Other locos are the PRR F7A in which I had repainted into a PC F7A, and the B&O SW7. Also to mention, the Athearn 6 axle GE would be a U28C or U30C in which Athearn made both engines. It hard for me to tell sometimes with a quick glance of these locos.
Great video as always, there's just something satisfying about watching model railway unboxing/haul videos.
Shame for the SP GS-4, since it is one of my favourite steam locomotives, though I prefer the American Freedom Train livery.
It's a shame they're not easy to find (or very expensive, gotta love online shipping costs) where I live.
I’d like to be entered in that drawing. Nice haul too.
