One thing you might not know about Mark is that he is an introvert who stuttered sometimes when he was younger. He arrived in Korean knowing nothing about the culture and the language, bc unlike other American, Canadian or Australian kpop idol, his family is not Korean, and unlike Asian idols he was not familiar with kpop culture. He immersed himself so much in the language that he became almost unfamiliar to his native language, having difficulties to speak English in public. It was only after a few years that he overcame it, and now he’s able to switch from Korean to English to Mandarin without blinking. And his Japanese rap is amazing too.
Just the other day, Mark was asking his fans what he should do with his hair, and he pronounced "mullet" with a Korean accent 😆 the "m" was like a "ㅁ" 😆

He has forgotten English words in interviews before and tried to translate his thoughts from korean haha. I think part of why Mark can sound so natural speaking korean is because he grew up in a bilingual household where he probably heard as much mandarin at home as he heard English while he was out of the house, so he’s been exposed to more sounds and can detect and repeat well. Would love to see you grade Bambam and Jackson too purely because they’re the opposites of Mark - total extroverts who probably have stronger native accents when they speak but superb vocab because they voluntarily speak more and use those words more. I love these vids! you should do some members of nct they have members from america, japan, mainland china, hong kong, macau, canada, thailand, and a member who is from taiwan but moved to germany as a child!
I absolutely love these kind of videos :) I think NCT or SEVENTEEN would be really interesting as well, especially NCT has *a lot* of foreign members that you could choose from.
Ok now that you've brought up long sentence and talkative people, I gotta know how Jackson speaks. That man talks so much, I'm wonder if he uses longer sentences. He's so outgoing and funny so I wonder if the way he speaks in Korean kinda of motivates people to laugh as well.... Anyways loved the video! Thank you doing such a careful analysis!

Actually mark speaks in every language like that. As short as possible. Also his members already confirmed that he understands and knows the most Korean from all the foreign members, but he just doesn't speak much! He is more on the introverted side😊 But thanks for analyzing 👍
I think Mark's just really scared to "stand out" or make a mistake, that's why he was quiet for the most time. But now that he's back in LA he talks SO much and is so active, he's almost changed for 180° when it comes to speaking 😂😂
Mark definitely speaks shorter sentences, the members have expressed that they get frustrated that he doesn't finish his thoughts LOL. He definitely speaks less, but he is definitely not quiet LOL. I'm not sure if there is actually a quiet member in Chaos7 😆
still waiting for the gidle foreign line. half of the group is foreign and all of them speak so well, i'm pretry sure billy would be amazing surprised with them skills
Billy ! Ahgase here! Thank you for doing GOT7! We love them and they are amazing. I hope you heard the clips of Jackson and Mark speaking mandarin/Korean/English all at the same time. It’s hilarious
Ok another note I think him making his sentences shorter is also just his personality. He is not a talkative person by nature. In his native tongue, English, he also gets straight to the point. Just something I’d noticed.
Your recent uptake on non-native K-Pop idols speaking Korean is inspiring, commendable and truly eye-opening. As a new subscriber on your channel, I see and appreciate the effort and research that you do on your every upload. Thank you. I am learning Hangul from you, spending 2-3 hours each day watching your videos. :-)
About that part when he immediately screamed in Korean after seeing the ghost - I think the language he thinks in depends more on the setting than his native language (ofc this still does count though). I'm not sure how to explain it clearly enough but I basically do the same thing - my native language is Polish but I've been raised in a heavily English speaking setting which led me to speaking both of those languages fluently (and thinking in both of them too). When I'm in Poland with my Polish friends, I think in Polish and kind of automatically switch to it - although it takes some time. During periods I mostly am with English speakers, my brain switches again and my thoughts and reactions will be in English. It's not always super clear tho, I've been struggling with being bilingual especially as a little kid, fortunately it gets better with time. tl;dr: I think because Mark lived almost solely in Korea for all those years (trainee time + part of GOT7, 11 years in total = almost half of his life) he got used to thinking in Korean since that was the language he was hearing and been all around - life's just easier when you immediately speak the same language as your friends. I do believe his brain will switch to thinking in English right now that he's back home.
thank you so much for this video!!! can't wait for you to grade jackson's and bambam's korean/english since they're not native to either of these languages :)
THIS! THIS! As someone who lives in Japan, I know my pronunciation of Japanese is pretty good that I do trick Japanese people however my sentences are always super short and that’s because I lack the grammar to lengthen my sentences. I definitely do listen a lot and I do consciously keep my sentences short. I do speak a lot but it’s a whole bunch of short sentences but to anyone Japanese, I appear to be better at Japanese than I actually am. This was really good to see someone who is in a similar position in their language learning to me
Having to witness Billy slowly become an ahgase is sooo amusing. Good luck billy, got7 will really entertain you a lot through music and their personalities lmaooo
Hello billy! Just happy to watched this episodes of got7 in your channel, I hope to see you interview them personally 😄 They just released their new song NANANA yesterday, check it out ü
You should cover NCT. (Name(Land of Origin)) -Ten(Thailand) -Lucas(Hongkong) -Hendery(Macau) -Johnny(Chicago, IL. USA. His mother spoke both English and Korean, but I'm not sure if he was native) -Mark(Toronto, Canada) -Yuta/Shotaro(Japan) -YangYang(Germany) -Kun/WinWin/Xioajun/Renjun/Chenle(China)
I really love seeing the different things you're pointing out in each of the videos you've made from this series so far, and I also really enjoy seeing what kind of different comprehension and fluency level the different idols have! I hope you'll be analysing the foreigners in nct at some point too. there are many, many members to pick from and I can't wait to hear about all of them (or some if you think that's too many after all haha.) one thing I'd also be really interested in seeing from you is a video where you talk about how you approach your analysis when you start grading the idols. what is it that you're looking for in how they speak, how many videos you try to watch on average to make an assessment of their skills -- things like that!
Thank you for checking GOT7 out! I really enjoyed this video. Mark is known to be a bit quiet compared to other members, but the korean members always make jokes saying that Mark is just a native Korean in disguise
okay so we need to finish up got7 with BamBam, then please do NCT members (Mark, Johnny etc.). I really love these videos! Thank you! 이 비디어는 너무 많이 좋아해요! 감사합니다!
You should do a video on the foreign members of Seventeen! There are two Chinese members and two American members (though one of the American members was raised in Korea)
I'm familiar with Got7 but feel shocked whenever I hear Mark or BamBam speak Korean. I'm not so shocked when it comes to Jackson, though. I really like how I his voice sounds when he speaks Korean 😳👀
Mark is the best one in korean, specially grammar. Still in general Mark likes to go to the point. That is why he says less words in any situation. But is true, as he doesn't know as much as he want so he thinks on the easiest way to say things.
Please, make a video about (G)I-DLE members. There are three of them. I think their Korean is so good, but I want to hear your, more professional, opinion on them.
if you ever grade nct, there are a series of compilations called "nct versus the korean language" that shows the best clips of the members struggling lol
also, kudos to you for doing so much research! Your content is amazing and well structured so I really enjoy it! i hope you enjoyed watching the got7 content as well hahha although it's kinda hard not to laugh at got7
It's interesting because when you see him speaking more English now, he almost struggles with long sentences- it's like he has to stop and think about what he wants to say next, and he is very specific about what he does or doesn't say. He recently mentioned that he is a perfectionist, so I'm not surprised that his Korean is at an almost native level, and I have a feeling that he keeps his sentences shorter to make sure they are concise. While Jackson just talks and doesn't care if he messes up, Mark is more likely to not talk if he isn't 100% sure of what he is saying. An example of this is when he said "Worldwide Act" on Weekly Idol, and then Doni and Coni started making fun of his pronunciation (because he pronounced it how it's supposed to be, instead of the Korean way 🙄.) He tried to hide and was really resistant to saying it again after that, because in his mind he had messed it up. I knew another guy that people thought was 'slow' because of how he talked, but after getting to know him I just realized he took longer to put a thought together, but he was really insightful when you gave him the chance to express himself. Mark reminds me of that sometimes but instead of coming across as slow he comes across as shy.
This was very interesting to watch as I‘m learning Korean too! ☺️ What I‘d like to point out is that Mark‘s sentences in English are short as well hahaha so I guess it‘s just a part of his personality!
The number of times I've been in the process of trying to translate something long and suddenly realize that there is a much simpler succinct way to say it lol. This video serves as a reminder 😅
Great video! Next time, you should grade Yuqi and Minnie from IDLE. A lot of MCs and radio interviewers always comment how great their Korean is, but I really can’t hear the different between them, soojin, and Shuhua.
Lovely video! I always felt Mark was confident with what he knows in Korean which is totally fine. Anyway, i hope you could consider judging Handong from Dreamcatcher! I know they arent as high-profile as the others youve grades, but Im extremely curious because her korean doesnt sound too “slurred” as other chinese idols I know (namely tzuyu and vivi). Thanks!
I think you would like to analyze NCT. There are a bunch of non native speakers in all their teams. And of you don’t want to do all of NCT you can choose a group.
I think the foreign ENHYPEN members, Jay (19, korean-american, has lived in korea for 10 years) + Jake (19, korean-australian, grew up speaking very little korean and has now lived in korea for 1.5 years) + Ni-Ki (15, japanese, has been interested in kpop and korea since he was a child but has only lived in korea and practiced the language for ~1.5 to 2 years). Ni-Ki and Jake would be really fun especially, as you can see their improvement throughout the months. Ni-Ki has gone from very beginner (though he's always had great pronounciation which i'm jealous of haha) to intermediate in the span of a few months. Jake on the other hand has been advancing through intermediate to the beginning of a bit more advanced. It's really fun and interesting to observe their different strengths and weaknesses, especially as they've been actively learning the language for about the same time.
your videos are amazing!! ty for your hard work. i just wanted to know if you can do the same video, but with Hueningkai from TXT. please please please!!

hey I think u are igot7 so plz can u tell me that if mark is not korean how can he match korean beauty standards in this comment it is written family was not korean so how can he look like that and also is he not korean blooded like his ancestor were korean or something like that and I am confused becoz American Don't look like that
This series is a great way to grab the attention of the Kpop fanbase while still keeping the content centered on what you actually like -- legitimately teaching Korean. Glad to see it doing so well.
omg I can't explain how excited I got hearing you talk about Got7 when I love both your channel and them, it's like my two worlds came together 😂 you sound so informed already like you're one of us! haha
and yess you're right, bambam's parents named him after the flintstones :D Can't wait to see you analyze Bambam and Jackson next!
I love these vids! you should do some members of nct they have members from america, japan, mainland china, hong kong, macau, canada, thailand, and a member who is from taiwan but moved to germany as a child!
_speaking of mark_ xD
Cuz, y'know. Mark's canadian? ok, bye
I wish you can grade Day6's Jae korean since hes an American eventho hes ethnically Korean so hes still struggling with korean language.
I absolutely love these kind of videos :)
I think NCT or SEVENTEEN would be really interesting as well, especially NCT has *a lot* of foreign members that you could choose from.
Please do (G)I-DLE next! Half the members are foreigners.
Minnie- Thai
Yuqi- Chinese
Shuhua- Taiwanese
Ok now that you've brought up long sentence and talkative people, I gotta know how Jackson speaks. That man talks so much, I'm wonder if he uses longer sentences. He's so outgoing and funny so I wonder if the way he speaks in Korean kinda of motivates people to laugh as well.... Anyways loved the video! Thank you doing such a careful analysis!
Thank you for analyzing Jackson!
Please do nct members, they have a lot of foreigners (johnny, yuta, mark, the whole china line HAHSHA) pls pls pls pls
I love how the title is “Grading GOT7’s Korean - Mark” because it hints there will be more videos with the other memberssss. I can’t wait!
New subscriber 💚
10:30 I see you are a man of culture as well, Billy
Mark save time. See word (or sea world?).
Really enjoy this new series..thanks for keeping it going 😁
I was waiting for this video!!! thank you so much for grading got7 members' korean ~green hearts~ today is my birthday and this is like a present to me! thanks
Saeng il Chuga hamnida! 🥳🥳
@@pranavig2340 gamsahamnida ^_^
Yeah👏👏👏 mark is good😅💚
I really love this vid. I can't wait to see got7 jackson and got7 bambam series. 선생님 감사합니다🙏
7hearts💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
for teacher billy from AHGASES🐥
Actually mark speaks in every language like that.
As short as possible.
Also his members already confirmed that he understands and knows the most Korean from all the foreign members, but he just doesn't speak much! He is more on the introverted side😊
But thanks for analyzing 👍
Jackson and BamBam next pls :) I love your videos!
Such an interesting video! I clicked because of Mark but ended up enjoying and learning a lot.
_I actually didn’t know all that about Mark lol. Looks like Billy’s week of research was more in depth than all my years as a Got7 fan._
I need to be your friend now because same.
Hello fellow English-ised(?) Polish person!
thank you so much for this video!!! can't wait for you to grade jackson's and bambam's korean/english since they're not native to either of these languages :)
That ‘Kevin from the Office’ reference was perfect 😂
Ooh finally i was waiting for a Got7 members one
This series is so helpful, thanks Billy! I'd love to see you do (G)I-DLE next.
THIS!
This was really good to see someone who is in a similar position in their language learning to me
SOLID The Office reference. And I thought I couldn’t love your content more!! 빌리 선생님 화이팅!
Having to witness Billy slowly become an ahgase is sooo amusing. Good luck billy, got7 will really entertain you a lot through music and their personalities lmaooo
you can really hear the accent Mark has in some of the clips O.o
fun fact: BamBam of Got7 is childhood friends with Lisa of Blackpink!
...just a little fact for the new fans!
Hello billy!
Just happy to watched this episodes of got7 in your channel, I hope to see you interview them personally 😄
They just released their new song NANANA yesterday, check it out ü
You should cover NCT.
(Name(Land of Origin))
-Ten(Thailand)
-Lucas(Hongkong)
-Hendery(Macau)
-Johnny(Chicago, IL. USA. His mother spoke both English and Korean, but I'm not sure if he was native)
-Mark(Toronto, Canada)
-Yuta/Shotaro(Japan)
-YangYang(Germany)
-Kun/WinWin/Xioajun/Renjun/Chenle(China)
I really love seeing the different things you're pointing out in each of the videos you've made from this series so far, and I also really enjoy seeing what kind of different comprehension and fluency level the different idols have! I hope you'll be analysing the foreigners in nct at some point too. there are many, many members to pick from and I can't wait to hear about all of them (or some if you think that's too many after all haha.)
one thing I'd also be really interested in seeing from you is a video where you talk about how you approach your analysis when you start grading the idols. what is it that you're looking for in how they speak, how many videos you try to watch on average to make an assessment of their skills -- things like that!
Thank you for checking GOT7 out! I really enjoyed this video. Mark is known to be a bit quiet compared to other members, but the korean members always make jokes saying that Mark is just a native Korean in disguise
Love your videos Billy!
Could you do TheBoyz foreign line (Eric, Jacob and Kevin)some time in the future? I love these videos ♡
having a bunch of got7 videos recommended is my daily life and i'm not mad about it
okay so we need to finish up got7 with BamBam, then please do NCT members (Mark, Johnny etc.).
Loved this one. You know, someone once told me it's better to use short sentences. I guess they were right 😃
Enjoying it!!
U can have enhypen too
They have members from Japan and USA
Mark is the best one in korean, specially grammar.
Still in general Mark likes to go to the point. That is why he says less words in any situation.
But is true, as he doesn't know as much as he want so he thinks on the easiest way to say things.
Please, make a video about (G)I-DLE members. There are three of them. I think their Korean is so good, but I want to hear your, more professional, opinion on them.
Can you also grading jackson speaking korean? 감사합니다 😊
Jackson is next. Stay tuned!
네, 선생님 감사합니다 😊
Next, i would love to see the members from G-idle. 3 are foreign members from different contries.
I'm not korean and i understood the "just right" joke at the beginning
if you ever grade nct, there are a series of compilations called "nct versus the korean language" that shows the best clips of the members struggling lol
also, kudos to you for doing so much research! Your content is amazing and well structured so I really enjoy it! i hope you enjoyed watching the got7 content as well hahha although it's kinda hard not to laugh at got7
This series is so so interesting!
Bambam next😂😂cause everyone says he is good at korean
YES THANK YOU FOR DOING GOT7!!!
I LIKE THIS GUY A LOT keep going !!! thank you
The number of times I've been in the process of trying to translate something long and suddenly realize that there is a much simpler succinct way to say it lol. This video serves as a reminder 😅
Great video! Next time, you should grade Yuqi and Minnie from IDLE. A lot of MCs and radio interviewers always comment how great their Korean is, but I really can’t hear the different between them, soojin, and Shuhua.
These videos bring me a strange sense of calmness.
Idk why either man, I’m not mentally stable
Lovely video! I always felt Mark was confident with what he knows in Korean which is totally fine. Anyway, i hope you could consider judging Handong from Dreamcatcher! I know they arent as high-profile as the others youve grades, but Im extremely curious because her korean doesnt sound too “slurred” as other chinese idols I know (namely tzuyu and vivi). Thanks!
Please Bambam or Jackson next
I love your videos! Especially your lessons~ I'm learning a lot :)
Please check out NCT Mark and Yuta's Korean please~ Thank you!
Love these videos. Thanks so much!!!
I would love to see Jackson and BamBam can’t do one of the ATK (America Thai Kong) our 3 fav foreign members and not the other two.
i love how you binged Hard Carry, good choice 😄
Thank you Billy!! You're so funny and relatable 😁
will you do the same with Jae from Day6 and Jay, Jake and niki from Enhypen.
Niki and jake have not studied korean that long.
(Sorry for my english)
I see GOT7. I click it. And you get a new subscriber, Billy 😊
analyze mark and jhonny's Korean (nct) pls!!! both are native english speakers!!!
Can't wait to see the other foreign members from GOT7. me ahgase is excited hahaha
Also, can you do peniel from btob please ;) Thanks.
Maybe you could grade Peniel from BTOB? He's from Chicago and is friends with Mark from their JYP trainee days.
I think you would like to analyze NCT. There are a bunch of non native speakers in all their teams. And of you don’t want to do all of NCT you can choose a group.
Mark really talent now
Jackson and bambam too please !!
Isn't HueningKai fluent? I know he wasn't born here but I tho that they still talked to him in Korean
Please do Bam Bam next !
And Jinyoung but English analysis
Please make a video about Day6 Jae's korean
I'm sure many of us wanna see a analice of YUQI's korean, she is from Gidle
YANAN and YUTO from PENTAGON!
Also, WAYV’s Korean (they’re a Chinese group)
I am learning Korean and I relate to making short sentences. I feel like since im learning I should make more complex sentences... but if you can get across what u want to say that's the most important! marks efficient haha
