This video was originally much longer (18 minutes!), but I had to remove some more recent videos of BamBam due to copyright. Some media companies just *REALLY* did not want me using their clips, even though I made sure to follow all Fair Use laws. I'll be addressing this along with some new plans for the series in an announcement video coming next week, so stay tuned~!

I think Bambam is in general an auditory learner, he also learned English just by listening to his English speaking friends.

  • @asiab.5926
    @asiab.5926 3 года назад +344

The fact that BamBam learns most of the languages by hearing and talking and not in books is totally true, you can see it easily with his english being mostly slang and really colloquial ways of talking, especially when compared to jackson where it's obvious he learned it in school.
Also, I like hearing BamBam talk in korean a lot, especially in lives I find it so pleasing :)
Thank you so much for this serie! I loved it

That's a good observation that you brought up! It's true, one sounds so grammatical and emphasizes each grammatical point while the other is mostly slang and 'chill' hahaha. It's interesting how two people can learn the same language yet speak it so differently!

What is amazing to me about Bambam is that he didn’t even know any English when he moved to Korea. He only knew Thai. So, although JYPE did give Bambam Korean lessons, I totally agree that he most probably primarily learned Korean through speaking and listening, because there are probably very few, if any, resources or textbooks for learning Korean written in Thai that were easily accessible when he was a trainee, and obviously he probably didn’t know or have regular contact with Thai speakers there at the time. Having said that, it’s also what makes him SO good at Korean. Correct me if I’m wrong but despite his slight accent I think Bambam feels the most native and natural when he speaks Korean among GOT7’s foreign line and it’s likely to be because he didn’t have English to fall back on when learning Korean. He had to learn on the spot if he wanted to be able to communicate with others and he did so successfully. Bambam has assimilated into Korean society so well that even the Korean members say his day-to-day mannerisms and mentality is very Korean and it’s something I have noticed too. 😂
(I’m suddenly reminded of that misunderstanding he and Mark had when they were trainees which resulted in Mark throwing a laptop at Bambam because neither of them could speak Korean yet and Bambam didn’t really know English. 😂)
It would have been interesting if you had also reviewed some more recent clips of Bambam as well, to see if he has shown improvements in his accent or pronunciation, but otherwise another awesome video! Thank you 💚

Thanks for making this series! It's really interesting to see the Korean skills of idols who didn't grow up speaking Korean as their native/main language be evaluated. It's a great way to pick up tips on how to sound more natural or correct errors in my own Korean, especially because the idols are usually at least at the intermediate level, so the mistakes in their Korean may be different than those of beginners that are often pointed out in other videos about Korean mistakes. If you continue this series, I'd love to see you do it with the Pentagon members Yuto and Yanan.

Been waiting for this video, Billy! Your videos have been helpful for my Korean studies 😊 I'm Thai-American (and from LA!) and speak Thai as native as English. I think you're right about the subtle Thai accent. There are many Thai sounds and characters that sound like Korean (that's why I study Korean with a Thai instructor mainly, and supplement with your videos for added explanation!). BamBam's nickname wouldn't appear on his birth certificate, per se, but yes, most Thai people have a nickname because our real names are so darn long. Some Thais has nicknames even if their real names are only one syllable (force of habit?). His real name is pronounced 간피묵 푸와군 (but the 간 in this case is a hard ㄱ as if it were the second syllable) 😊

Out of the three foreign members, Bambam trained at JYPE the longest, so he was in Korea the longest. Mark is next and Jackson trained for the shortest period, out of those three, before debuting. Naturally Bambam's Korean is the best out of the three foreigners, especially because he went to Korea at a very young age - 12 or 13 (easier to pick up languages when you're young).

Bambam practices a lot with games (discord talk too) and loves to see tv a lot. He is the one that talks the most korean as his best friend is the maknae from got7.
His pronunciation is his struggle as he does gets shy as he speaks sometimes and he translates this to a chill mode, so his speaking mixes with a softness natural to him.
If you listen to him talking in thai , he talks even softer and relax, but since he has been so much in korea that he does show this step back on speak too.

Thank you so much for these series Billy!
I want to suggest Nct next... but I'm afraid it will take more than 10 episodes to analyse all of them 😅

Hey Billy! I have really been enjoying your new RUclips series of videos evaluating foreigners speaking Korean.
I don't know if you are taking any suggestions on here, but it would be great if you could evaluate people like Cristian Burgos or the guys from 비정상회담.
Thank you! 그럼, 다음에 또 봐! ㅋㅋㅋ

Those clips were from 2016. I think now he improved moore i remember in 2018 or 2019 some Koreans praised his korean skills

You should definitely check out Chenle and Renjun of NCT Dream, they are both Chinese but they are really good at Korean. Renjun actually has korean background but Chenle has improved very fast so I think it would be a lot of fun for you to compare his korean throughout the years.

oversætyou can analyze Day6´s Jae and Enhypen´s Niki and Jake and Jay.
I do not know if you want to analyze jay, because he has lived in korea since he was 9.
Niki and Jake have not studied Korean for a long time.
    (sorry for my english)

It would be cool if you did some of the nct members! They have a lot of foreigners including Johnny, Yuta, Kun, Ten, Winwin, Lucas, Mark, Xiaojun, Hendery, Renjun, Yangyang, Shotaro, and Chenle! You probably won’t see this though since I’m late lol.

Bambam is actually his name too. Not just a nickname some friends gave him. In Thailand parents assign short names to their children as well as full names and everyone calls them that.
It was surprising to me too but later on a Thai friend explained it to me.

Oh man, you could have a field day with NCT. Two native English speakers, one Thai, and like four native Mandarin speakers and three native Cantonese speakers. All with wildly varying degrees of Korean proficiency. I'd love to see you analyze any or all of them!
