Just can't beat their groove. It makes the world seem like a good place.
WORD.

@@jwark04 I’ve seen an interview of Bernard Purdie in which he says, that to be a good drummer, you have to have fun drumming, always. This is so true, and well more widely applicable to mostly everything one could do in life. This man, Bernard, seems to be part of the greatest humans who roamed on Earth so far, at least this is my firm belief.
THIS IS NO "BATTLE." It's simply two EPIC Drum Masters showcasing their talents.
Yeah but who won tho
If you asked 100 professional (working) drummers that question, I don't know if you'd get any clear consensus.
yeah but making them respond to each other like that will definitely still give you something different.
Could be a personal bias or whatever but it seems « musical battle » is a Russian thing, every time I stubble upon those kind of event, very interesting although, it’s in Russia ^^
En plus dans un beau pays, vive la russie
The sticking of Mr Purdie, the dynamics, even in the ghost notes..The man doesn't just play drums, he tells a story on his instrument
💯
R.I.P. Mr. Tony Allen ,we have been truly blessed with your presence.
пздц... Чалый басист у Тони Алена

Its the Purdie shuffle vs the inimitable afro beat King, who cares who better. This is a master class in grooves 🔥 of Purdie and Allen is enuff.....
Well said.
Big respect to both Masters. Being 80 years old they still continue their legacy. Amazing.
Bernard is just the absolute BOMB!!!
I can't stop smiling when I listen to and see him perform!
The absolute tight control Purdie has over the beat.... The man acts like he was born with drum sticks in his hands!
He was!
"done worry bout dem ghost notes, ain't nothin but rebound"
And its also.....HALF!!!!!
Splain, not explain but splain
"Just make it sound n feel good!"
English? Much???
legendary
Only Purdie could make a Sabian B8 cymbal sound good.
I was mad when I saw that cymbal, but yeah, he made it sound good.
Rob Andrews I was thinking the same thing. Bernard is a bad MoFo!
I was like a B8 oh no 🤦🏾♂️
Lmaooo so true
@robandrews... I'm a guitarist and I thought your comment was hilarious!!! 👍👍👍
When it comes to perfect timing, and *_just being cool,_* Tony Allen has it locked down! However, Bernard Purdie is beyond excellence!
Thing is tho, Tony Allen never even tried to be great solo drummer. But in everything else he is amazing and unique
This is beautiful! The two legendary drummers have unique styles that are difficult to deconstruct. Tony Allen held his Afrobeat style and so did Bernard Purdie his funk.
Thank you for uploading!!!!
Lots of good names funk, not that many good names in Afro Beat. Purdie dunt wow me, Tony solidified a sound all his own. Bottom line, great video, love them both.
These guys are damn near 80 years old, if not already. No where near their prime. I think its so cool that they even did this.
Are you kidding me. Name ONE of these "new age" drummers who could hold their own agaist one of these legends.
My only thing is that Tony Allen chose to do mostly reggae groves that most people are not familiar with.
@@jussayinmipeece1069 What are you talking about? My comment is in regards to everyone who's saying these guys suck. Bernard Purdie knows that he was a better drummer back in the 70s than he is today. If you're a musician, you should know this as well. The older you get, you lose chops and stamina. He's probably a better overall musician than he is today because of things he's learned over the years. These guys have gotten older, they're not near their prime. No one is comparing them to new drummers or old drummers. My comment was in regards to everyone saying they shouldn't have done this. It's super cool to even be in the same room as these guys, let alone be able to hear them play in person. So Idk what you're talking about.
@@lilejamie93 ok, well then i agree. I got the impression you were saying that they were way past their prime and shouldn't be doing this because they didn't quite compare to the present day drummers.
I'm from Ireland. I love Russias enthusiasm and respect for hip hop, much love to you all over there,
fuck this Hip Hop shit, it's a plague here in France, not drums battles with awesome musicians, alony rap battles with gangsta wannabees
@@Alix777. ruclips.net/video/FvgIu8lPGdc/видео.html
So much respect for these older gentlemen showing their skills (as they have for decades) to the younger generations. I hope they can make you all proud!!
I think i see the difference here. Allen is playing beats. Purdie is playing tunes.
God I LOVE these guys! Tony Allen, is the commandant of finesse, restraint, ghosting and incredible clockwork, plus he's so goddamn cool! Bernie is the master of pocket, groove and "feel". I could watch and listen to them for hours.
this is really just amazing. the real winner here is the audience. these two are respectful and classy gentlemen elder statesmen of the rhythms of their own musical worlds, which are completely different (afrobeat vs soul/jazz/rock/funk) yet compatible here in their able hands.
Can we just get these two to jam together somewhere? The competitive aspect of this ruins it. You don't watch/listen to these guys to see who's better, you do it to learn how to be better
"Battle" does not mean much here, it's certainly not a real battle, you just saw what you are talking about. But for me, they should not necessarily play together, they are not particularly compatible, they offer different things and have different backgrounds. This is an exposition , not a contest. Only YOUR opinion matters who is better here, but only to you, I see exactly what you seem to see is not happening, they ARE essentially jamming together.
If I'm even vertical at their age I will be happy. Never mind being able to play . Two different masters at their style . Both have my equal respect. A happy and unexpected find . Joy to watch and learn new ideas.
Possible tip for you, Try Fela Kuti (Fela Anikulapo Kuti) with tony Allen, Epic Afro beat goodness.
Mr Purdie is a MASTER ENTERTAINER! Respect!
Tony Allen, what a legendary drummer but that Purdie shuffle is ridiculous. Physically impossible not to crank your neck to that, good Lord.
What a wonderful collection of magicians, sorry, musicians........
I'm not a musician. The finesse of these two drummers amazes me. Totally hypnotic.
Благодарю от всей души!
Это великолепный репортаж!
Спасибо за удовольствие!!!
“If you’re going to take my job, you’ve got to do all of it…”. This is fantastic. These two are some of the most iconic of all time. And for them to come together like this is so beautiful. It’s not a “battle” in the true sense of the word: it’s a celebration of groove and unification of music and a statement of the joy it brings. Both are so supportive and wonderful for the next generation. ❤
It’s an old school drum battle. That’s cool.
I will simply say enjoy and be inspired, soon these legends among many more will be gone. Those who replace them will not have the groove from the soul coming from trial. Both Mr.Allen and Mr. Purdie have so much groove to give. I just felt that Bernard almost didn't need to even play, his mind and body gave a groove without the instrument.
Purdie is a God
Tony Allen is a God
The first half Purdie wins because his shuffle is more palatable to Western musical ears and taste
However as the battle progresses you see that Purdie can only give you sub divisions of the shuffle....Tony Allen has a different pocket groove for everything Purdie throws at him
Ultimately Allen could have sat on that kit for 3 hours and gave a different pocket grove, Purdie would be hard pressed to match that stamina.....Purdie is the cleaner more flashier player in terms of traditional chops etc but Allen is the Groove.
The winner is RUclips drummers who can learn from these master drummers about how to create a steady pulse.
My two cents
You must be kidding.
@@lvvry1855
Are you a drummer???
gasdemup he’s a fool
i am a drummer, tony allen in the higher tempo has horrible timing.
@@harry-kf7kw
I also dabble on the drums, you gotta explain more in regards to your idea of timing and how Tony is off
I'm back to say how Clean Bernie was for the Hand Drumming solo into the sticking.
2018: Bernard Purdie begins giving drum lessons in Russia.
2020: Russia is the sole drum superpower. US musical leaders demand sanctions...
Weird phenomenon: even when I try my darndest to spell "Bernard Purdie," it always comes out as "FUNK." With capital letters.
Both are great no doubt. Just gotta say tho, that overtone on Tony’s snare just kills me. Love Bernards hi hat.
love the overtones. Make the drums singing.
Great drummers and bass players! Imagine playing guitar and singing for these guys!
Two of the greatest, win or lose. You guys are arena champions! Much love.
Bernard is just next level
Both guys are amazing drummer. Respect to both of them. 👍👍👍🥁🥁👏👏
Bernard BROUGHT a bass player and Allen grabbed one off craigslist.
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
Mathias has been playing with Tony for years
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
hahahaha
I dont see what the point of a "battle" is with these guys. Pocket players like these dont need to battle anyone, they unite.
Moist Peanut 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So true......we need to celebrate their talent not pit one against the other.
dont care how they call it, dont care who 'wins' the point is me being able to see them both together :>
I guess it makes for entertainment and they both got paid so who cares? They also got to 'educate' a whole load of young people in how great proper music played by skilled musicians can be. Who needs a Garage Band?
Meh, who is the most pocketed pocket player in the world is what I like to know. I’m sure, if you play hard enough in the pocket, you may cause a dent in the space time continuum 😂 Other than that, i agree with you 😉
Amazing percussionists, but Bernard makes me feel!
Both winners here - Tony played Tony and Bernard played Bernard. Feel for days.
Tony’s snare don’t sound right, his toms sound deep and throaty very Afro and he’s brilliant.
But Purdue is in a different class. He has effortlessly given a masterclass on how to get in the grove. Just wish he used K’s
Anyone else notice that "Unknown Soldier" by Fela Kuti is very similar if not identical to Sly and Family Stone: "Sing a simple song." Very quick kick pair, to a double stroke right after.
The people watching are the real winners here. Seeing this happen is just awesome.
He done did it...he done battled the hit maker Bernard "Pretty" Purdie.
Cant believe these dudes still going strong. Saw Bernard in like 2012 in a small dive bar in Buffalo Ny. Awesome show.
I feel like this really showcases just how different fundamentally Afrobeat is from American RnB and Funk. The audience can't "hear" the song he's playing along to, but of course they're all familiar with the cliches Perdie is pulling from and it sorta shows on their faces. Quite literally a musical language barrier
Splain'em Purdie, splain'em good!
One of the best videos i have seen in a long time thank you
Tony allen is not in his comfort zone here. Bass player not helping much
Zeus Apollo, thats was some whack bass playing
Agreed
RIGHT THAT BADD PLAYER SUCC ASS!! WITH HIS 2 TONE NOTE ASS, AN SWEAR HE JAMMIN!! MAAAN SIT YO ASS DOWN SOMEWHERE!! LAME
DAGUTTA100 😩🤪😝
His bassist destroyed him here. Paces around like he's ready to piss his pants and wouldn't know groove if he fell into one
Both are my favorite drummers. Clash of styles. Love it.
Фига себе такое в Питере происходило, а я даже не знал (((
I don't know that this was a fair battle because Purdie had a much better bass player. Both drummers were great, there was a much greater difference in bass players than there was in drummers...but Purdie was a little better IMO than Allen. Both are monsters. The true illustration of a great musician is being able to take shitty sounding equipment and making it SING and both of these drummers did that which is a testament to their talents!
Bernard Purdie really showed up with a B8Pro and killed it
Roy put on a show, it really make a big difference!
Always somebody in the crow who needs everyone to think they have a deeper understanding than those around them. Insecurity is another word for it.
Allen died on an aneurisma on the abdomen april 2020. My father had the similar but was rescued at last minute They both are nearly 80 at the "battle"
Lucky Audience to see them both at one occasion. What a joyful place St. Petersburg can be. Or should i better say could be.
Bass player made the difference. Bernards bass player complimented the drum playing which made Bernards parts more dynamic.
THEY BOTH CAN REALLY PLAY AND BEING THEIR AGES AND STILL SOUNDING THIS GOOD WAS A TREAT FOR ME.THANKS A MILLION FOR THIS VIDEO.
From 33:59 to 34:51 the reaction of the man in the middle of the 2 bassists is priceless, all this show was crazy! (At the end, he's like checking his heart beat XD)
I like that you properly put that title in full caps.
Bernard still the master groove man the only one that stands out for me in this what ever this is!
Tony Allen looks like he would rather be anywhere else but here.
Same with the girl right behind him.
Money
TBF he's up against Bernard Purdie
@@Ash_Hudson exactly
Strange venue! Appears to be going down in a school gymnasium in rural Russia.
You can’t give a drummer 5 boring notes in a competition and think he has a chance. Listen to the big guy giving his drummer groove. The next drummer needed a bassist.
The bass duet was fantastic!!! What a grooooooveeeeeeee..............
Holy crap, the people who came up with this concept should be given some kind of royalty in the Groove Kingdom.
I think the battle began in Purdie's favor, as he's clearly as much an entertainer as a drummer, whereas Allen is a spiritual groover; people are gonna enjoy a drummer who can engage the audience when compared to someone who sticks to the instrument. As a US drummer myself, I've always liked Allen over Purdie - but Tony clearly loses to Purdie.
I don't care about the winner/loser here, though. This was a brilliant concept, and St. Petersburg deserves credit for a contest I doubt we'd ever see here in the US!
Great explanation
I agree Purdie had the first half.....As it progresses Purdie pretty much has no answer other than subdividing the Purdie shuffle....Tony on the other hand could have sat on that kit for another two hours and gave a different pocket groove each time.....Purdie has a better overall feel for Western musical taste yet I have yet to encounter a drummer who has come up with as many signature pocket grooves as Tony Allen.
That said I believe any drummer who wants to be a great musician should learn from these two masters....time and feel not technically impossible chops with no soul
Just my two cents
Tony Allen is very creative drummer
Everybody wins
What a battle !!! i am addict to Mr Purdie untill i use the drum stick, but yep! they are two living legend !! those russians dudes ( musicians ...i think) look like in Heaven...I will to
I just couln´t help but falling in LOVE with the BLACK DRESSED GAL behind Purdie´s mic.
¡¡¡¡SHE´S THE GROOVIEST!!!!
Pretty Purdie will forever be the King. It’s all about the history of hits behind the man, period.
The Bass battle (in a hope it was an exprompt) is hilarious!
Purdie's background girl in black is grooving just the right way. Oh, she knows what's up with the main man on the tin cans!!
She focused
I have always loved something outside the many others
Battle has been a misnomer. It's usually just a show for fans. I don't recall ever seeing drummers asked to play paradiddles as fast as they can for a trophy.
Syd Hamelin 'You've never seen "Worlds Fastest Drummer" then! Lol. (Don't bother...)
@@SAHBfan It's kind of weird that I described an exact competition that really happens.
I need to think this through haha.
Where is my horn section??? They are smashing those instruments into dust. This made my day!!
Purdie has extraordinary good taste and charisma.
Purdue started with his hands...DROP THE MIC
It's Purdie.....not Purdue!!
Tony Allen's a gangsta
Purdie actually explains the science of drumming in interviews . He is the master of his craft .
This was much more a showcase of two styles as exhibited by top performers, not a judgement of the performers themselves. It satisfies the requirements of a reality TV show while also allowing near unfettered creative expression. If you know a TV producer then you'll want to give them a heads up. ;o)
Why they don't have these in the states??? Our people need to hear n see this this will encourage them to play instruments n look into the jazz/ funk history. Do yo thang!!! This is where they had Bboy Storm vs Crazy Legs battle!!!
I had just one lesson from Bernard pretty P. Because he told the owners of drummers collective that he cannot teach me anything because and I quote Bernard...Jerry knows too much...and I was only playing a full kit for 6 year's that was about 40 yrs ago....peace and Bernard thank you for this great Epic memory...peace
I've seldomly been more at peace listening to BP and the bass player jam on Home at Last.
prometheusfallen isn’t chuck Rainey on bass for that cut?
@@mikehunt4023 yessir! Tough to beat that combo in the rhythm section!
My brother name is Bernard I had to add that in man he killing it tony not bad either but that Bernard fellow killed it but when I grow I want to still play like them there great and to be doing it at there age amazing
Afrobeat is not play as you want.. you play as Fela want.. u start stop break in and lead out the Choir.. massive 30+ people doing their things.. U SMOKE IGBO
For me Tony is the one with a more unique style and his Afro Beat work is legendary. Gona go listen to him and Fela now, got the itch.
Everyone likes to feed off the genius of Black people and then bear a false witness against them. But know this for sure.....the seasons are changing.
At the risk of being pedentic mate it's "bear" (unless you really mean folks are going around making sham witnesses naked in wihch case I apologise).
I can’t say who will win this drum battle but I can definitely say that the level of passion, artistry and skill these legends Cary are out of this world good.
Two Gods of drums. If ya got time listen to the whole set, but It really kicks off @ 26:30, peace.
Awesome man
Masters AT Work
When Afrobeat is on you can start filling in the horns and the riddim guitar.and the yabis flow.. l really dig afrobeat men.. it’s all black music in 1 pack..
Purdie's base player won.
It's *bass*, and his name is Roy Bennett.
@@dagaypussayeatah the russian guy definitely said "base" player 😅
Tonys Bassplayer just kills the vibes and dont let this killer grooves shine, even downgrades it totally...
After guitar, I'm getting a drum set straight up!
Sizwe Ndlanzi - You must learn to slapp the bass my friend .
こんな企画がこの世に実現していて、さらに自分が映像を拝めるなんて、まるで信じられない。ありがとう
This is so sad - Got these 2 legends playing on 20 year old Pearl kits and Bernard has Sabian B8 cymbals!! Entry level cymbals?! The organizers really dropped the ball on this.
yah I noticed all that. whacked. also noticed that some of the women in the audience look like they have hard basic lives, like their faces are hard, no easy lives, not extra money, just basics every day.
C'mon man, money the've shelved from being stolen by Putin gang wouldn't make for anything else :D
I don't think it matters... If you can't make B8's and an old Masters work, where's your groove at?
@@snoolee7950 and what isn't basic life? how do you quantify the weight of living? they were present in this event and you aren't. It signifies that they are perhaps more informed and or have access to opportunities like this, it is not all about the USdollars and Yen. The drum sets are basic but it is possible that these were at the request of the drummers.
6:15 upper right corner Kurt's banging to the groove
But daaaaamn Bernard and his bass player have some epic chemistry!
Learning about Fela from the words of Ginger Baker, I was expecting something somehow different from Tony Kings side.
That said, I’d love to see this same thing happen with (beware) Mr Baker in the throne alongside Purdie.
Barnard is currently my favorite drummer to listen to and just have his beats as a sound to accompany my background as I drive or something around the house.
