Rescuing a flying-fox from beside a swimming pool: this is Boyce

  • Boyce is a Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was trapped in a pool enclosure. He had nothing to climb onto to get enough height to escape. He will be in care with a wildlife carer for a couple of days to see if he's OK. If he's fine, he'll be released this week. If he's not OK it will become obvious in the next 24 hours. He may have hit his head. He may have inhaled pool water. At this stage it's too early to tell what his story is, and what injury, if any, he has.
    Update: Boyce was released 3 days after coming into care. He was fine. There's a video of his release up.

      It is pretty cool, though personally, I find the fact that owls can do it too. Wildlife Aid has a video of a release gone wrong where one of the young owls they released flew down and accidentally landed in a pond. One of the rescuers was all set to swim out and get him, but he swam to them instead and was completely docile when they picked him up, wrapped him in a jacket, and took him back to the center for the night.

      I don't like to get wet, and there was very little poolside manoeuvring room.
      I could've grabbed him but really he was going to corner himself eventually and the tiles were smooth so he wasn't going to graze himself on them.

    He did a great job of swimming! Reminded me of the breast stroke.
    It was brilliant seeing you give him enough room to maneuver, and to unhook his toenails from between the wooden planks in his attempts to avoid you. Going into the corner to BE cornered for easier picking up.
    He’s beautiful, as are all flying-foxes!
    Well done, dear Meg!

    Great footage of swimming bats. At my family's forest cabin, at the lakeside, bats show up frequently on summer nights to engage in mind-bogglingly low-flying and lightning fast ballets of mosquito-catching, and I've always wondered how the poor things fare when they hit the water. I guess they'll be fine without me worrying.

  • @NoseyNana
    @NoseyNana 6 лет назад +90

    Wow, they swim! Of course they do, doesn't every native Australian hehe? Well, with those swim strokes, if it was an American bat, I would have named it Phelps or Phelpsie, but for Australia it looks like you have 2 top male swimmers: "Leisel Jones has won nine Olympic medals, equalling Ian Thorpe as the most won by any Australian." So that's just in case you get another male swimmer & you're stuck for names. But we don't want to leave the females out either so we have: "Stephanie Rice, winner of three gold medals at the 2008 Olympics, including the medley double." These little sweethearts are so awesome, I wouldn't be surprised if they play Quidditch @ night while we Muggles sleep :)

    I live in Southwest Montana USA up in the mountains. We have little bats called Little Brown Miotis, very small, maybe mouse size, furry, color of dark chocolate. Most of us have above-ground swimming pools, and we have to put floating bat islands in them. If a bat as it swoops down to get a drink, miscalculates, and ends up in the water, it can swim over an island, climb up on it, and eventually take off again from what looks like a bird perch. Little Brown Miotis are endangered in this part of Montana. They eat mosquitoes and are important natural controls on those pests. We have 5 bats per square mile, and we should have 10 times that many. We all do our part to help these wild creatures, and they help us in return.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  5 лет назад +2

      That's fabulous you have such a thing as floating batty islands for them to get out of the pool.
      We have myotis here - they're fishing bats. They have large feet so they can fly and skim the water and skim off tiny insects and crustaceans, grab with their rake like feet, and flip into their tail membrane so they can fly off and eat it. Love myotis.

    He is very handsome and cute! And very dextrous when walking with his little thumbs first.
    In a way I like that they have to come up a bit before they can take off. That makes me feel that they are "relatives" (trust me, I will never try flying 😆, but if, I would need a VERY high hill to start from)

      @@LauRa-re9un Have a look in the YT search bar for Megabattie/Boyce/hard release.
      You'll see how we release them.
      They live in colonies. I released him near a colony and watched him fly off into the trees where the other batties were.
      They live in large colonies and they're quite mobile moving between colonies all up and down the coast. Colonies are like camping sites - everyone is welcome and just come and go as they please.
      There is safety in numbers.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  4 года назад +2

      They can, but they don't like being in the water - it's not their environment and they're subject to predation.
      They bellydip in ponds and creeks and waterways for a drink, so they have to be able to swim to get out of the water if they miscalculate and don't do a dip and skim, but actually end up in the drink.
