To clear up the confusion about the whole name thing: Kiesel/Carvin Guitars is *NOT* a different company who bought them up or something. It's the old guitar division of Carvin Guitars/Audio,that became a separate company. The company was founded under the name Kiesel ,by Lowell Kiesel in 1946. In the early 50's,he had a legal dispute with some dealers, who had the exclusive distribution rights to his products. He decided to fold the company and re-brand it as ''Carvin'' a name made up from his 2 eldest sons, Carson and Gavin Kiesel. He also introduced the ''factory direct'' sales model, that they're using still today, after his bad experience with said business partners. In 1970,the eldest sons wanted to close down the guitar division, but the youngest son,Mark, stepped in and took it over. They came to the agreement, that Mark would manage the guitar division, while they would run the amps and audio division. Mark Kiesel,is the one who designed the DC Series, which this J.Becker model is based off(Jason's original guitar was a DC200 Series),the guitars for Allan Holdsworth etc. etc. and in 1995,his son Jeff, joined him in the company. In 2014,the Kiesel family, finally reclaimed the legal rights to the brandname ''Kiesel''.They decided in 2015, to split up the 2 divisions, who were operating pretty much independently at this point. Mark & Jeff Kiesel also decided to go back to the original name ''Kiesel Guitars'',they even use the original logo from 1946.They still use the old Carvin logo, for copyright reasons,so that it can't be claimed by a third party and put on guitars by a different manufacturer. The ''Carvin Audio'' company, has nothing to do with the ''Kiesel/Carvin Guitars'' company and vice versa. Carvin Audio, declared bakruptcy, last year and is rumoured they will start over making amps overseas but nothing official. They recntly released a Steve Vai sign. pedal. Kiesel/Carvin Guitars is doing great and still manufacturing everything in the US. There's a video on their off.YT-Channel that goes on more detail and I highly recommend to check out their off. FB-Site,because Jeff Kiesel does frequent, live Q & A's,where you can ask him anything. And no,I don't work for them.
Don’t hear much of a difference when the active preamp is on. They put locking tuners because they make string changes faster and you also don’t need to stretch the strings as much. Locking tuners should be standard on all guitars. No reason to not have them. You also don’t need a winder at all.
Maybe its just the recording, but there is a big difference. Not only that, there is an adjustment in the control cavity to adjust the gain of the active circuit.
Good test ! thanks ! Locking tuners are not for stability but for faster string changes, it locks the string so you don't have to make a lot of turns. So cumulating locking nut + locking tuners are far from beeing a nonsense :)
I have been a musician since the 1970's and so over these many years I have seen a LOT of Carvin equipment, since they made everything, I Mean Every dog gone thing under the sun. Funny, I cannot remember Any of it not being excellent in every way. Now that I am older and have a lot more money than i did as a young musician I can pretty much afford to get anything i want. So, when I wanted a Large Venue Guitar Amplifier I looked at All the major brands, Marshall, Orange, EVH, Randall, etc. Then I thought about Carvin. I tried a V3 and upgraded the 4 X 12 Cabinet to Celestian Vintage 30's in a Russian baltic Birch Cabinet.... WOW! It blew me away. I always try out Amps with ZERO effects, No stomp boxes, etc. This Carvin Amp doesn't NEED any added effects! About two or three months after i bought it, I awoke to find that Carvin will No longer sell Guitar Amps and cabinets! How sad! Many people don't seem to understand how this devastating this really is to our world of music. One of the true greats is no longer an option. So, I have owned the Steve Vai signature Legacy, it was also awesome in every way but i still believe the V3 is and will always be regarded as one of the all-time greats.
Had Kiesel make me one of these two years ago.. I requested chrome hardware, and medium jumbo frets. The JB200 now comes with the Seymour Duncan Perpetual Burn in the bridge now. Real solid guitar. Love it. I enjoy your videos Steve!
Agreed. Winding strings, stretching them, constantly tuning them til the windings settle is reason enough for every guitar made in this century to come standard equipped with licking tuners. I have sperzels on all mine.
Locking turners are not like a locking nut they only lock the string in place for quick string changes and less string windings that help the strings to not slip and go out of tune. We're a locking nut completely locks the strings at the nut. The benefit to have locking turners with a locking nut is that it makes string changes quick and easy and don't have to spend extra time whineding strings. So many people get this so confused because they see the it says locking turners but works way different than a locking nut.
Dude, I've been following you on my vintage channel (2004) since 2016 and recently re-discovered JB after reading about him in the 90's. Cheers for this review, you ROCK, MAN! JB DOES TOO
I received my JB200 back in August 2021 and love it, best guitar I've ever played! Although, mine does not have the passive / active set up, just passive, they do not build them that way anymore and i asked why and Jeff said they do not have the modules for that set up anymore and mentioned that Jason never played it with actives and he said he discussed it with Jason and Jason said to just do it passive only because that's the way he originally had it. Is yours passive / active or just passive pick ups?
I received my JB200C last August and it is the best guitar i own! If you have not already got one, just a heads up, the guitar comes as "Passive" only now, not the Active / passive combo shown in this video. I asked Kiesel Guitars why it was changed, and Jeff said that they do not have the modules for that kind of set up anymore, and he said that Jason never played "Active pick ups, at least in that guitar and that they were offering it as the combo set up at the time because it was something cool to do.
Locking tuners also make string changing so much more convenient. No fumbling around with a string winder and trying to get tight coils. Just put the string through and lock!
Nice looking guitar! I found that the locking tuners save a lot of time for re-strings, even for a Floyd-equipped guitar. I load the ball end thru the tuner, route the string thru the locking nut, clamp the end of the string in the bridge, pull the ball end tight and then lock the tuner and clip the string. It probably cuts string change times by about 1/3 for me.
I own one. Very different than the one you are playing but still supports Jason. I love mine. No active electronics in mine though. Mine has many 1 off custom features as well. Just the bridge humbucker just a volume knob thick neck profile yellow color and more. Straight up thrash machine.
Nice guitar! A few years ago Kiesel used to offer a lower priced version of the JB200C. It might have been named the JB200D where you didn't have to order the expensive options for the guitar. It was around US$1300 new. Just checked and a new JB200C is now US$1800. And you can order the JB200C in any color, as long as it's blue...
Steve - Thought we were going to witness first guitar of 2019, but then you said it wasn’t yours. Killer color and flame!!! I guess locking tuners with locking nut makes the guitar double secure?!? Just kidding, locking tuners seems to support quicker string changes and less string stretching. 🤘👍🎸👍

Fender owns that headstock design now, so no bueno. I believe fender/jackson tried/did sue them over this and that is why they stopped using that headstock shape a long while ago now.
Common misconception is that locking tuners are anything to do with tuning stability. They aren't. Doesn't matter if you have a living nut or not, the tuners locking or not don't affect tuning stability. Quality of tuners does though. It's all about ease of changing strings.
Hello !!! I have a question please... Can you tell why I can see a battery case on your guitar ? I will buy a JB200c but Kiesel doesn't offer an active pick-up version and pictures do not show any battery case. Did you customised your guitar after you bought it ? Thank you for your answer !
