This is the most brilliant explanation of this I have ever seen! When I first learned a few verbs like 'essayer de' I had no idea of the significance of the 'de' and that it was so crucial to the sentence! Either nobody told me, or I just wasn't ready to grasp it at the time, but boy it's coming back to haunt me now!

If only I had known to learn them the same way you learn the gender of a noun.

😂 you and most French learners! Try not to fret about it. a) remember that missing à or de is rarely going to cause major confusion. If someone says "I'm listening music" you know exactly what they mean even though it's wrong. Of course, there are some instances when the meaning changes based on the preposition, but don't let that stop you from speaking. Form sentences as best you can and learn from your mistakes. b) start with the advice and examples I've given in this video. Don't worry about all the other uses of à and de until you're comfortable with these. c) Most of the time, it's just a question of memorisation; you can't always figure out whether you need them or not. You just do. This is something you'll learn over time. Read a lot, listen a lot and you'll get there 😊 bon courage !
I just wondered about sentences that begin with de or en; for example is there a difference between "En retour..." and "De Retour... I saw a sentence in La Monde: "De retour en France depuis 2019, la journaliste ne supporter plus que Perviy Kanal...". Could that also be "En retour..."?
I wouldn't think of these as sentences beginning with en. Instead, they're two expressions that happen to contain en. I make the distinction because 'en' is just part of these expressions; it's not being triggered by anything. In the case of 'en retour' and 'de retour', no they are not interchangeable. 'De retour' means 'back' e.g. je suis de retour = I'm back / I have returned. 'En retour' means 'in return' e.g. je voudrais quelque chose en retour = I'd like something in return
