@@imane111 that's a laughable take. Epecially since in her season 1 episode 1 debut, she strips off her armor and tries to bury it. On the score, there's a related music entitled "Burying the Past".
@@imane111 redemption and putting it behind her are different. Xena has always tried to put her past behind her while still trying to redeem herself. Callisto visually reminds xena of her past including killing innocents in Xenia’s name.
My childhood. Chanel 11 action pack. Hercules at 8 Xena at 9. The best two hours of tv watching of my childhood. And when Callisto and Xena fought, I was glued to the screen! Epic
We'd all agree she was way more interesting and cool to watch as a mortal during seasons 1 & 2. This was one of the first scenes truely showing Xena's biggest weakness being utilized to gain advantage, which was Gabrielle in danger in the midst of battle. Id still say it was quite obvious Xena was the superior fighter despite the ambiguous nature of never knowing who was really a match to her or not. Without Gabrielle distracting her, Callisto often fled from Xena on 1 on 1 encounters. Her psychological guilt game she had on xena combined with her being a formidable opponent made her easily one of the shows greatest villains by far though.
For 90s TV, despite the inherently cheesy tone, there are some nice subtle acting choices. Despite Hudson playing Callisto like a straight up crazy, in all her episodes you can tell she admires Xena as much as she hates her.
I remember how edge of my seat I was for this!! And yes cheesy but the danger felt intense man!! The end was holy crap!! Callisto was so disappointed for not killing herself yikes!!
This still holds up! Congrats to everyone involved in production all the way to post production! The hundreds of people involved here.... it's quite the masterpiece!
For the time this was done, on a syndicated show no less, the scope, staging, and choreography of the whole sequence is *very* impressive. Xena had a very talented team behind it.
The great TJ Scott behind the camera really making this whole sequence so cinematic and epic. Nice to hear such positive comments, I think some people today don't understand the level of production that went into this series. It certainly isn't the "silly cheesy action show" some say it is. It's so much more.
@@tjtenser7828 Excellent TV program. - Xena is one of the great action heroes in tv/film history - The shows overall storyline is extremely good and writing in certain episodes is amazing. - Overall acting of the reoccurring characters is definitely good and offer some real depth and personality. - The show continually took a ton of risks. - Also was fantastic in several key areas: cinematography, stuntwork, costume/set design, and music.
@@tjtenser7828 Yeah I feel the same. I think it's a hard show for the casual viewer to appreciate. But people who watched it consistently were definitely rewarded.
If you really think about it, Callisto looked like she was going to jump to her death. She was even giddy about it and cried when Xenia caught her. It's really sad because it shows how much pain she was in since she wanted to die.
xxlCortez yea I kinda wondered why she didn’t just let go of the rope. But having xena catch her by the rope instead of her hand maybe gives the viewer insight into where Callisto head was at
When they made her a god i feel like they backed themselves into a corner. They didnt know what to do since at that point Callisto could have easily killed Xena
for sure. she was way more interesting and strategic in all of her actions, as opposed to becoming a god and slowly getting dumber. You got to see her caliber as a fighter too. Even her immortal form (without the powers) in Hercules & Necessary Evil was neat to watch too.
Callisto always had some of the best lines in the entire series. "Any new husbands since the last one I killed." or "Played a game of Truth or Dare and she's not very good at it."
As formidable as Callisto was, Xena was always one step ahead of her female rivals. Why? She created situations during battle to psychologically make her enemy believe they had the upper hand. This scene was the perfect example of a brilliant mastermind at work. You gotta give the writers credit for Xena creating the moment when she saves Gabrielle by using the wooden ladders. She knew Callisto would leap onto them, ultimately giving her the upper hand to free Gabrielle and also save Callisto. Hudson played the complex Callisto perfectly, a woman bent on revenge but yet so emotionally damaged.
Callisto was also a great tactical warrior. There were several times that Callisto could have killed Xena but chose not to as she wanted to torment her more than kill her.
Several times in the show Callisto places Xena in situations just to watch her navigate the situation. Everything is a grand performance and even for Callisto to show off her skills too. The psychology with this character is brillant. I just met Hudson at the 25th Xena con. She was incredibly nice. What an honour to meet the woman behind this great performance.
Let me tell you what I would do, if you let me go? You let me go? And I will dedicate my life to killing everything you love. Your friends. Family. And even your horse. You see I'm being so honest, because the idea of your pity is worse than death. You created a monster with integrity Xena. Scary isn't it?

Callisto was the greatest because she was a creation and constant reminder of Xena's past which she tried so hard to escape. Love this show. So deep.
Xena never tried to escape her past. In fact her whole journey is about facing it and redeeming herself for it. What show have you been watching?
