Yeah, that's what makes this such a powerful episode. In the end, even Lao Ma couldn't live up to her way, providing Xena with the means (and permission) to assassinate Ming Tien. Xena's lie was twofold: she killed Ming Tien, and Lao Ma betrayed her philosophy on her death bed.

In fact, he said something to the effect of "sometimes you have to cut off a thumb to save a hand." The man he killed was a tyrant, and would have killed a lot more innocents had he lived. I think that's what Lao Ma--and by extension Xena--knew about Ming Tien. The best pacifists know how to be pragmatists as well, and the best pragmatists know that sometimes, brute force is the only way to deal with pure unadulterated evil. It's like a comedian once said, "people always say that war isn't the answer, but that depends on the question."

But I imagine that in-universe, Xena was probably thinking to herself, "yeah, but the world isn't like that, and until it is, people like her will need people like me to protect them from a cruel, unforgiving world." Gabby pretty much admitted that at the end of "The Quest": she said that while Xena's consciousness was in her body, helping her fight Velasca, she felt protected in a way she otherwise wouldn't have.
True, though then again, Gabrielle has lied to Xena multiple times, some with extremely bad consequences, but the one time Xena lies to her Gab makes such a big deal of it.

Although I'm a Callisto sympathizer, my absolutely favorite episodes are the ones that go into detail about Xena's past: "Destiny", "The Debt", and although it technically isn't about Xena's past, "When Fates Collide" still has that feeling to it, and I absolutely LOVE Karl Urban as Julius Caesar! Best casting for Julius Caesar EVER!

For Ming T'ien to kill his own mother, what an evil son he's turned out to be. What's even worse is one of Lao Ma's twin daughters, Pao Ssu, has followed in Ming T'ien's footsteps. How could Lao Ma have such evil children? They didn't love their mother at all. Kao H'sin, the other twin daughter of Lao Ma, was the only one understood the path Lao Ma was directing and the only child who was not evil.

This episode just showed how stupid Gabrielle was. She couldn't even tell that a guy with a blank stare sitting motionless on a throne was dead. I'm not sure if the script writers intended to make Gabrielle look this stupid or not. Sneaky for Xena to attempt that kind of deception but I guess she figured it would work on dumb as rocks Gabrielle.
well, definitely that was intentionally done to show his death at the end. I think it's not really the point if Gabrielle knows if he's dead or not. Gabrielle already realized that he was evil and I think she wouldn't mind if Xena would kill him infront of her.
I like to think Gabrielle knew he was dead and just played along, the way she said "I love you Xena" almost like she was crying was a way of saying, "I'm not stupid, but I understand and forgive you."

I think the fact is that this was pre-meditated, not done in the heat of battle. Even then Gabrielle rarely kills, whereas Xena doesn't mind it.
