No Annie didn't break out from the crystal.Rainer and annie were in the same group so he said those things because he thought it might convince Ranier to go back and save annie. 2nd: the commander joined the scouts only to know the truth of the world, he wanted to prove something. You will get the answer in season 3
I remember watching season 1 and 2 years ago and dropping the anime cause as it progresses basically no questions are answered and it becomes more and more confusing. Friends tell me it's an awesome anime so i now decided to continue to watch season 3 and 4 but after watching the recaps i feel that if i continue to watch season 3 things will be be even more frustrating for me as almost nothing makes sense god damn it. I just want answers, whats going on in this world? Should i just keep watching?
@heyJimmayy Rewatch as much as you can in succession. As someone who watched season 1 a year before starting season 2 I highly recommend it. It only gets better! For me it also helped a lot getting in call with a friend that’s a much bigger anime fan than myself. I was able to pause and he would thoroughly explain anything I didn’t understand. It’s truly an amazing anime. Also if you don’t have access to a super weeb friend like me that’s willing to help you can watch episode recaps on the ones you don’t understand!! It’s sooooooo worth it.

I specifically remember Levi jumping from titan to titan. I also remember the rocks crushing the incoming cavalry. And I mean, I remembered the movement of all that happening, not just the story. It's crazy. Messed with my head at that time.

Thanks for the recap, I got so bored watching this season I literally started skipping through, the final fight was pretty good. I just can't stand the parts where they show the same drawn out scene 15 times before moving on to the next lame dialogue that feels so stretched out.

Just finished AoT S1 and, boy, there were a lot of storytelling problems. Episode 1, Eren expresses his intent to join the Corps, his mum gets killed, and in response he swears to.... join the corps? Which he would have done anyway? Meaning that the events of episode 1 don't set Eren's life on any trajectory that it wasn't already on. His mum could have survived and he'd still have signed up and the rest of the plot would play out the exact same way. There's no call to adventure and its obligatory refusal. The internal and external conflicts don't intersect and instead run entirely parallel. Episode 2 in its entirety could be cut. The only important information that's communicated to us through the whole of the episode is Armin and Mikasa's reasons for joining the corps, which easily could have been exposition woven into the dialogue of episode 3. The rest of episode 2 is just lore that never comes up again or pertains to the external or internal conflicts. You could accidentally skip episode 2 and not even notice. That's how pointless it is. And the other episodes have their problems but I feel like these 2 are the biggest offenders and the easiest to agree upon. Also, man, the dialogue. The characters spell out pretty much everything they're thinking and feeling. There's no subtext, nothing left to be implicit or self-evident. Talk about tell and don't show.
Seems to me that these are pretty small issues that shouldn’t hinder the viewing experience that much. Also, yes, that is how dialogue works in anime/manga.

Regarding Eren's mother's death in episode 1: frankly, you're probably right with your whole analysis; but in all honesty, Eren probably wouldn't have that same grit. Since the whole titan uprising had done a number on him personally, that makes him more of an unrelenting force in the battle against the titans - especially since he is one of the most pivotal figures in the battalion in all of human history. Even if it does not sway the plot, it does a lot to chart character development. If Eren's mom never died in the first place, the audience would not be able to witness the linear incline in his character as the story progresses through the seasons. The idea is that Eren can battle against the masses STARTING from the bottom - akin to how people work their way upwards to attain success, fame, money, etc. There wouldn't be much satisfaction value if he already had it all (and nothing taken from him) from the beginning.

The only important information that's communicated to us through the whole of the episode is Armin and Mikasa's reasons for joining the corps, which easily could have been exposition woven into the dialogue of episode 3. The rest of episode 2 is just lore that never comes up again or pertains to the external or internal conflicts. You could accidentally skip episode 2 and not even notice. That's how pointless it is.
And the other episodes have their problems but I feel like these 2 are the biggest offenders and the easiest to agree upon.
Also, man, the dialogue. The characters spell out pretty much everything they're thinking and feeling. There's no subtext, nothing left to be implicit or self-evident. Talk about tell and don't show.
Seems to me that these are pretty small issues that shouldn’t hinder the viewing experience that much. Also, yes, that is how dialogue works in anime/manga.

Man, I thought I was the king of letting small things affect my enjoyment of otherwise great media. If only you would’ve endured such hardships and stuck it out until season 3 you would’ve came to see that this show is very much so more than “boom-bang-POW”.

Regarding Eren's mother's death in episode 1: frankly, you're probably right with your whole analysis; but in all honesty, Eren probably wouldn't have that same grit. Since the whole titan uprising had done a number on him personally, that makes him more of an unrelenting force in the battle against the titans - especially since he is one of the most pivotal figures in the battalion in all of human history. Even if it does not sway the plot, it does a lot to chart character development. If Eren's mom never died in the first place, the audience would not be able to witness the linear incline in his character as the story progresses through the seasons. The idea is that Eren can battle against the masses STARTING from the bottom - akin to how people work their way upwards to attain success, fame, money, etc. There wouldn't be much satisfaction value if he already had it all (and nothing taken from him) from the beginning.
