Sailing Gently you great adventurer, and your video proofs me right, that to be (alive) and healthy is more important than to be a millionaer. Imagine you are multi Millionaer making a sail around the world, and then getting robbed and injured or killed by pirates. So in my point of view, to be and to stay healthy is one of my most important aims in life.

I have not watched the video yet but it reminded me of a chat I had with the really interesting owner of "Chartist Lady" in Cherbourgh. He suffered from bouts of depression & was considered a weird loaner in his club. He nicked his father's boat & went off . The boat was a mess & was dis masted etc . When he returned to Holland after circumnavigating the world, he was hailed a hero by his sailing club & wrote books. On his trip he was attacked by pirates. They came aboard, saw the state of the boat & realised he had nothing. As a result they were very friendly laughing & chatting. Waved him on his way & went to the next boat in the convoy & robbed them instead.

      @SailingGently  3 года назад +16

      Graham hi,
Sounds like a great story and adventure for 'Chartist Lady' and yes being poor is a great leveler - I knew a Irish guy in a tiny wood boat who was fed by fishermen in Morocco and Libya even. He was a hod carrier and had taught himself to navigate and lived in this tiny leaky wood boat in which he had to keep the charts permanently in transparent plastic bag because of the deck leaks.
Nice thing about sailing is that the challenges are the same for rich and poor alike

As you well know, many of these incidents don't turn out well, but you handled them in such a non-threatening way I'm sure they almost felt sorry you had fallen into their trap. There are so few great adventures left that are worth the risk like the old days of discovery. Our time is fading away. Cheers and safe passage. Doc

Interesting and intriguing story Michael. Spent 33 years at sea, mainly on submarines, and then a further 35 years in the ME (in areas that you certainly wouldn’t want to go on holiday). Have been involved in similar situations on land but although frightening at the time, taking a similar sensible approach to yourself and not offering resistance always ensured that I lived to tell the story and could put it down to experience. Ironically, the Mr Big’ often sell the ill gotten gains to feed their starving villagers.

Blue water cruising is really not that difficult and with all the electronics available it makes the navigation part of it so simple... G'Day Michael, Nice to re-live our little adventure together in the Gulf of Aden. I made that radio call interrupting your description of your attack on the 'Net' and describing our developing attack on that day. Our salvation came in the form of a P3 Orion, French I believe that circled us for about an hour and diverted to find the attackers. Our attackers were in old ship's lifeboats packed with refugees from Somalia seeking to escape to Yemen ! The people smuggling was the business and the yacht attacks seemed to be 'cream' for the crews. I reviewed all yacht attacks in that area at that time and all had similar experiences even occurring on the same day of the week. Your account was well told. Good to see you surviving well. Greetings from Melbourne Australia.

I must admit, the South Pacific is certainly the place I am most looking forwards to. It’s a shame Europe has become such a thorny issue for U.K. visitors. We are even contemplating missing it out altogether. I have consumed most of the information you have shared regarding visiting there, and although it seems achievable I’m still not sure if it is worth the extra aggravation.

Hello Micheal, great to come accross again and hear your great story telling. We met in Marsa Wasi. I was on Warren's Mustang Sally till then and after I skippered Pollux first leg to Cyprus. Great to hear again about that unforgettable Red Sea adventure, we too were chased by a small craft in the same area in the gulf of Aden but thanks to Mustang Sally performance we managed to keep a safe distance and slowly sail and motor away. Are you going to tell the story of Ewan his partner and Pollux? It would be great, that was another very touching experience during that amazing voyage Phuket to Cyprus. In some of the pictures in your video I saw Pollux next to Bambola. It gave me a jolt. That is the first time I saw her since I have left her Cyprus. I will never forget that upwind voyage.

Giovanni it is wonderful to hear from you.
I do indeed remember that we met in Marsa Wasi all those years ago in such sad circumstances that you skippered Pollux to Cyprus - It was all a wonderful example of the cruising community coming together...
There is a real dilemma about using somewhat tragic stories on social media as real 'living' humans are alive and my be impacted.
Because of this I tried to contact Liza to seek her permission and my emails arrived with her mum and I learned that Liza and Ewan's son were alive and well and happy.
Liza's mum is writing a book about the events and the ' English family issues' are still not exactly resolved. I never got a reply from Liza except via her mum and whilst she did not ask me 'not to tell' the story, I can see with a new family and Ewan's son in his late teens she might not want it all over social media - I am pretty sure it would go viral - well be widely viewed.
It seems to me that I should not intrude on a mature family by publishing in video form a sad story and I am content to wait until her mum's book comes out and then perhaps re- consider.
Apart from that and the pirate attack the passage from Phuket to the Med was certainly a wonderful experience which I would not have missed for words.
So pleased you got back in touch - so grateful to you for taking Pollux to Cyprus
      Fair winds
      Michael

@@SailingGently Great to hear from you. I understand your concern regarding publishing Liza story, it is indeed a very personal and sad story. Yet it is quite extraordinary and as such it should be told. I hope her mother will publish the book soon and cement the memories for all of us that were there and got involved. My concern is that her mother wasn't there so I doubt that she will be able to reconstruct the story accurately. You or any of us that were there could provide many very valuable details that would greatly enrich the story and make it a must read for any sailor or people that is thinking of going sailing. I will send the link of your site to Warren of Mustan Sally he will be pleased to have Red Sea flash backs. Unfortunately we lost one of the Marsa Wasi sailors. Stuart of Essence perished during the sinking of Essence in a storm in November 2019. Pamela, his wife survived. Stuart did half the voyage to Cyprus with me on Pollux. Great guy

Giovanni - that is so sad about Stuart -
My email is michael@michaelbriant.com and would love to hear from others on that Red Sea passage year
I hear what you say about her mother and even Liza knows little of the Pollux part of the story as I put Liza into a Toyoto Land Cruiser to Sudan, paid for by the cruising boats, with the wife of another cruising boat... I am awful at names!
The thing to remember is Lisa went home eventually and had Ewan's child and naturally eventually formed another relationship which resulted in marriage and more children.
My problem is what advantage would it give that family if I tell the story against their will?
It might make life harder for Ewan's son to have it all over social media - and not help him... I have no idea of what it must have been like being a single mum with the child rejected by it's English Grandfather... Appears to have behaved very badly..
Social media is a part of the entertainment industry - I certainly spend the occasional evening just watching RUclips and I enjoy making the video's for my channel, but it is not nearly as important as the private lives of people who are victims and could be disruptive...

@@SailingGently Yes, social media is part of the entertaining industry and comes with a lot of strings attached. You assesment is correct and Liza should have a say. I hope that you can get to reach her and sort out a way to tell the story. Maybe that lady that went with her may help, she may have kept in touch. Liza probably wanted to erase the memory of that awful time and likely does not even recall most of us there or realize the great efforts that went into helping her out. It would be a kind gesture on her part to acknowledge and facilitate our desire to tell the story. It is a sad one but with a great silver lining. I have sent the link to Warren. He used to write the log book and will probably have more details of boats and people that came to help in Marsa Wasi.

Glad you liked it John. I think it is now in the Gulf anyway with Mercenaries guarding many merchant ships

An outstanding account of a terrifying experience that could have had dire consequences for yourself and crew. Most people would have crumbled or retaliated and the outcome could have quite been very different. I suspect your account was rather understated, either way the outcome was a good one, you all survived without injury and your responsibility as the skipper was fully vindicated.

Evano so pleased you enjoyed the video - I think my training as a TV director helped. Dealing sensibly with problems and keeping your head as your plans crumble are part of television production and also transfer to the real world! Thank you for watching
