Recently my brother went to the BMW Dealer and was recommended a slew of services. One was a Cabin Air Filter service for $414. Wondering how they could charge so much for what SHOULD be a simple job, I bought the filters myself and tried to figure out why the service was so pricey. We also get an update on the Cadillac Escalade Project and meet up with Rich Rebuilds and his sham LS Swapped Tesla.

Phsssssht its a secret for next model year.
Right, I was thinking this had to be some kind of Keurig level of BS
Subscription service for access to the air box.
That's too VAG type of fckery lol. Soon there will be component protection even on cabin air filters. Heck there is even component protection on the blinker stalks as far as I remember on the newer ones.
The reason it costs over $400.00 for the cabin air filters; the fancy dealership waiting room, latte machine and leather couch.

Unfortunately this kind of thing has been way more common since the pandemic. They have to find ways to counter balance the profit loss so they are gonna try and get it out of us. The ford dealer wanted to charge me over 900 dollars to change a serpentine belt and one idler pulley. I got my truck and left disgusted and just did it myself. Unless you have a warranty, never ever go to the dealer. And I mean never.
@@TSyoyo And it's only going to get worse if we allow it.
Pay per use. the faster the fan spins the more you pay. or a subscription service
I agree with that sometime dealers and even repair shops try to overcharge for things like air filter changes but then once in a while it is the other way around. I have 2017 Jeep Trailhawk and got lucky when at the shop I brought it to for an oil change offered a special to install either the cabin or engine air filter for just the cost of the filter (~$15.00). Knowing how easy the engine air filter is to install I opted to have them do the cabin filter. I watched the mechanic struggle with having to dismantle half of the dashboard to get at the cabin filter taking almost 1 hour to complete the whole job. I ordered the engine air filter (~$ 10.00) while waiting for this job to be done, received next day and it took about 10 minutes to install… think I made the right choice.
The banter between Sam and uncle Rich is hilarious! 🤣🤣
Look like you figured out where the printer toner guys found new jobs

I used to teach in the IT sector, once we did an experiment where we weighed out how much ink came in each replacement cartridge. We concluded a 55gal drum of ink would retail for over $250,000 and it cost them....$450 to harvest from dye bearing trees in the Amazon. This is on par.
The price of HP ink cost more than gold per ounce
@@paulsolovyovsky1702 its actual robbery
I'm surprised you found a hybrid BMW that actually ran long enough to need an engine air filter.

These new BMWs are actually quite reliable!

This has to be one of you best videos' when it comes to the disparity between dealership pricing v work effort. They didn't get the rather unfortunate name of a Stealership because people are mean.
I love this video where you were going back to basic with minimal tools to do DIY work. BMW can over charge their customers mainly because they know the kind of people who bought expensive cars.
I've been watching Rainman Ray's Repairs for a while and something that I've found interesting is the time estimates for repairs. When he's diagnosed a problem he looks it up in a database and there is a description of the job and a time estimate. From what I understand this is used by insurance companies when deciding if a repair is to be approved or not. It also sets the price that the garage can bill the insurance company for the job. Most of the time this time estimate is way high, sometimes more than four times the time it takes Ray to perform the actual repair. It's quite a difference in cost when the database says a job will take four hours and it can be completed in one or even less. It would be interesting to see what that database says about these service points for that particular car.
and that why YOURS and MINE insurance prices go up!!!
Flat rate. Sometimes the mechanic wins, sometimes the mechanic loses.
@@TheFirstStater Only if the mechanic is paid flat rate. When I started working a Mechanic was paid 50% of the shop flat rate. Don't know how it goes today, but I'm sure they don't make $75-120 an hr.
these bmw filters i believe they pay .8 hr which is alot for a filter
@@bomboyagegaming Is that 0.8 hours each? At the quoted price, $400 I think it was, that's the only way I see it happen...
Might be as simple as the database saying it takes 0.8 hours to change a filter, with a note that there's two of them...
I had a Honda dealership take my wife for $120 for a cabin air filter. I had a nice conversation with the service manager. Needless to say, I was not happy.
I KINDA get $120, I mean they have to take your car, touch your car, give it back to you. But $414?!?!!?!
@@Samcrac I get it if it was the only thing they was doing, but it was part of a bigger service and that was just the part, not the labor. I don't remember what the labor was, I was so pissed about the filter.
I work for Audi, and I’m surprised that Honda is charging that much for a cabin filter. On Audis we charge $120 for cabin filters. So I’m surprised Honda was that expensive.
I'd be mad at the wife for agreeing to paying 120 bucks
Yeah that's a common price to see at Honda/Acura Dealers. Most of them use the exact same filter and these days, they're in the glove box and you don't even need tools to replace them. Ridiculous...
I’m surprised you didn’t have to replace the ECU and have it reprogrammed by a BMW specialist to put in those cabin air filters. That’s what the dealership told me why it was going to cost me $500 here in California
They may need to update the ecu, to let it know a new filter was installed.
Not sure why that would make it a 500 dollar job though.
@@deth3021 you're correct. The ecu needs to be updated so it knows there's a new air filter. But yeah $500 is ridiculous. It doesn't even take that long

When I had my '12 Infiniti G25X, the dealers in my area wanted about $105 for a charcoal cabin filter change. I learned how to change it, and it took about 25 minutes of work, and the filter would cost me between $12 and $18
First Samcrac video recommended to me in over a year! Glad to see the channel still ripping along.
U would probably see a car from a year back that's still not fixed as well
The fix for that is to subscribe and enable notifications.

I'm subbed and I still don't get recommended videos from channels I subscribed to, instead I'm flooded with content from channels I've never heard of.
More like rotting. This video was about an OIL CHANGE AND AIR FILTER CHANGE. Yawn. Rebuild another pizza car.
I was charged $500 for an ignition coil for a 2012 CTS at the cadillac dealer in Florham Park NJ. The car was under extended warranty, but I was still outraged. I guess they don't expect customers to know about cars and feel they can get away with it.
The only thing I've really paid for at the Cadillac dealer for my '14 CTS was a trans service which was $250. Oil changes are $53. Somehow it hasn't really broken after all of warranty work it had done. .
That Cadillac dealership is a joke, I had my wife’s Escalade serviced there once and that was enough for me.

We had a similar issue with our local Hyundai dealer. The rear hatch shock supports were quoted at $495 for replacements. I bought two for $20 and it took about 10 minutes to replace both of them by myself. Not sure where they came up with the other $475 charge. Robbery for sure.
I used to work at a hyundai dealer and I can confirm, the prices on hood/hatch shocks are INSANE. We'd quote them but both us and the parts guys were like "why would they buy these? you can get them for 20$ on ebay"
On my Jaguar F-Pace you have to remove the center console and the glovebox to replace the cabin air filter - the book rate is 3hrs. If you have one of these, be aware you can change the filter in 20 minutes by removing the cowl and doing it from the outside.

Dude just get a air intake

In the car park outside their parts department?
The dealership thinks if you're dumb enough to buy their car, you're dumb enough to pay $400 for an air filter.

The real question is how many people HAVE paid 415 to have the filters replaced?
there's a sucker born at every sale
The guy getting it serviced on his company's dime, so all it costs him is a couple of minutes of his time to sign the paperwork
It’s BMW so I’m sure the people that buy these cars won’t ask why the price is so high
if you can buy a new car from BMW in that price range then you can also pay for maintenance and if we ordinary people can afford that car then you have to do everything yourself😂😂😂
On my 2017 Lincoln Continental you have to remove the right side console trim in addition to dropping the glove box. I just get the dealer to do it. They only charge about $75 and that includes the cost of the filter element.
Kind of hard for them to charge 400 for a oil change or a coolant flush people know that cost of that if they question the air filter price all the gotta say is oh it's mostly labor and there is two of them 😅

I got to know my BMW service rep to the point where I would always give her all five star shop reviews, with a name mention, and she in turn would give me discounts that most people couldn't get. One time she got the shop to do the air filters and then was able to remove the cost from my ticket because, "The customer didn't order that". I kind of knew it at the time, but this video cemented the value, of savings to me mind you, of what she did on that day for me.
How is she now under the bus?
or she pulls up another customers car that is under warranty and puts the warranty claim through, cheating the MFG to pay for it.

All main dealers pull this air filter trick. Takes 2 minutes.
Look at the repair ticket REAL close! Some will have "Replace or clean cabin filter" I am guessing some dealers will take an air hose and blow the crud out, while others will actually replace it.
Just wait for smart filters and consumables, like printer ink. Some little smart chip to keep you from just changing it without cel being tripped.
I'm sure they're thinking about it.
I was shopping for household air filters and they already have them. Bluetooth chips embedded into a plastic housing the size of a credit card that's supposed to track the airflow and tell you when you need to replace it. So unnecessary 🙄
Would love to hear the dealers explanation for charging so much. Bet they can’t justify it.
I love the fact that my ‘01 Silverado has a very very similar setup.. mine takes me all of 5 minutes as well

I went through a large part of my life never owning a car that had a cabin air filter
And even with a filter my car still gets dusty inside.
Yep, up until a few years ago, I'd never even heard of them. Mainly because, no car I'd EVER had, had a "cabin" air filter ! But then again, I'm old enough that the old cars I grew up with, and could later afford as 20 to 30-year-old used cars as a young adult, many never even had the OPTION of a heater/demister. And cars that did have, a heater was an optional extra. I remember one car I had fortunately had the option of the heater, but unfortunately it was entirely knackered. On frosty mornings I would run an electric extension lead out the house's door and put a 2kw electric fan heater in the car as soon as I got up, before driving to work. That warmed it up, including the gearstick, steering wheel and heated seats, and even the window glass was thoroughly warmed up defrosted and wouldn't cool down enough to mist up again, before I arrived at work.
I love those air bag jacks there the same thing as a air ride system on our big rigs so definitely a smart use for them
Here in Poland our vulcanizers are using those lifts while they change tires on the cars from Winter to Summer season. I love those lifts so much, using one myself while performing oil changes and other maintences
Stupidly, on a Lexus IS250 it's possible to damage the fresh air vent system by replacing the filter. The owner's manual lets you know you have to put it in the correct mode using the A/C controls beforehand. But it's very easy to damage. I never force anything, but I heard something break, then checked the manual. Too late.
I thought maybe it was something like this.
If Rich is truly your friend, GET HIM A DAMN MIC SO WE CAN HEAR HIM SPEAK. Love you Sam.
I used to do the accounting for a number of car dealerships. Ideally they want service department to cover all fixed costs of running the dealership.
Manufacturer kicks in money for the dealership to upgrade the building, but most of the margin comes from selling used cars, warranties and other addons.
Uploads back to back though love that
I took my 13 year old Mercedes R class in for some recall work and they kindly sent me an estimate for other repairs totaling 18k (for a car worth 6k). Some of the items seemed a bit unreasonable--$450 to replace a S belt, which I have replaced in 15 min for $50. Other things, like 6k, for an oil cooler seal replacement is a major job as it's buried in the V--but they also couldn't see it to know that's what really leaking and I've already done the seals myself.
get rid of that car asap
Alex from Legitstreetcars replaced that 1$ seal on the V12 CL. It has a pain on the but but worth to watch.
Mercedes dealer is nuts, i service muy fathers ML cause it's crazy what they ask
mine is just a v6 (diesel) so not quite as bad--not engine out lol. But still not something I want to do again.
Not sure when it started but frivolous recalls are used to get customers into the dealership (maybe see the new models) and generate revenue for the repair center. Marketing scheme. Just business not predatory at all :) . My daughter in-law went to the dealership for a "free" tire rotation and came home with a new car.
My dad went in for a new door mirror glass and came back with a new car!
My dealer (Ford) is very reasonable with their prices. Oil changes for my Mustang are $59 plus tax. I can't even buy the 10 quarts of oil and filter for that so I just let them do it.
Took my 2016 535i in for oil change. They recommended 8,500 in extra maintenance repairs. Took it to my local trusted private repair place.
So I actually needed only rear brake pads and rotors. Total repairs…$800
You got to laugh
It’s cause we know what to look for and how to make them last
Rich will have a recall notice from Rivian when he returns home❤❤
Just ordered one of those air jacks. Can't beat the price right now, what a great tool
It's easily explained, how else can they afford the free coffee machine, paid for with air filter changes
“That really beats jackin it!”
-Samcrac, 2022
BWW actually put $45 to replace cabin air filters, then a drop of coffee spilled after the 5 and looks like "0". Also, LS Tesla reminds me of 70's when super popular to install small block Chevy in Jags.
I got one of those Jacks, was like £80 delivered next day on Amazon. Wouldn’t trust just that so also use stands but it’s literally a life changer if your jacking cars all the time.
Sam did exactly this - used jack stands. The issue with most floor jacks is the fact that they don't lift straight up and so easily. These seem to be lift, lock, slide in stand, done. Move and repeat. 3-4 minutes to raise the front end a foot.
Btw, you have to be very careful about the rubber ring gasket at the top of the oil filter cover. If you get it in the wrong position, the oil will spray out all over the engine bay.
My wife paid $380 to change the headlight fluid. She thought that was cheap.

You're normally pretty hard on dealers and not always right in what you have to say about them. But THIS was truly egregious. Almost makes me think it was a mistake, I couldn't imagine a world this was a $400 repair
BMW = Bring Money With you, Breaking My Wallet etc. This video is Priceless! Good job Sam!!
Well i can't really fully blame dealerships for charging that much over a filter + labor.
After all, it's due to people that do not want to figure out how to work on their own cars. Dealerships love to advantage over that and start charging crazy prices.
I mean a lot of people just don't have the time. I mean if everyone had enough time to learn literally everything then there would be no service or repair industries for anything
Just because someone doesn’t know much about cars doesn’t make it right to rip them off. It is appalling.
A fool and his money will soon be parted. If your willing to pay for it then they are willing to charge for it.
How much air pressure did the inflatable jack require
Very cool Jack! Gotta get one.
I can't wait to see the first LS swapped Rivian!
Its BMW, are you really that surprised?
I worked at a bmw dealer. Not sure of parts cost but labor on that would be like 0.4 hrs. My guess it’s a misquote. We used an electronic repair order system and when we added a recommendation we would select from a menu. Sometimes the labor time associated with that operation was way under or way over. If you didn’t manually correct the time it would apply that pre-assigned time. We would document when a time was wrong and then have the administrator correct it. Just my guess. I wasn’t there. Unless the parts cost went way up I think it’s a mistake that should obviously have been caught.
Thanks once again for reminding me why I have kept my 2012 Honda CR-V and not traded it in for one these new fangled or upgraded models.
Good to see we're back to Sam giving Rich gyp throughout 😁
Rich needs to turn a RangeRover into an EV!! That would solve the mechanical issues, but the air suspension issues would persits...maybe they could change that too 🤔
He can use 4 of those jacks as airbags.
Didn’t Rivian just recall all of their trucks for possible catastrophic steering failure .

I recently paid a bit over 500 € at the BMW dealership in France for a big service on my F46, which included oil change, brake fluid change, oil filter, air filter and cabin air filter change, a light bulb change, a broken headliner light fixture change and a rear wiper change. Yes, I could have done some things myself but I wanted the car to be inspected by the dealership for it's first service under my ownership. And I didn't find it that much expensive. They lended me an I3 for free for the day and the mechanic did a video report on what he did. I got a 30 % discount because my car was over 6 years old. I'll soon have to replace the rear brake pads and it wont be that expensive neither.
But my panoramic sunroof is failing (broken cables and fasteners) and they quoted me 3159 € to replace all the pano sunroof frame, including the motor.
I also asked how much it would cost to retrofit a tow hitch : 2100 € ! And it's even not the electric folding one from the factory (which only cost 800 € as an option) but a standard tow hitch with a quick removable end. They justify it by saying that the need to change the Body Domain Controller module so that the ESP won't activate inappropriately while towing and to change the shift points of the auto transmission. Whereas at Volvo, they retrofit the same tow hitch for only 800 € and they reprogram the computer modules for free instead of replacing them.
I’d love more content like this! A project got finished
WOW !! JUST WOW !!
Not surprised at the massive upcharge. I had a similar reaction when the local dealer quoted me $125 for a simple tire rotation. I asked if they had gold-plated air guns back there or something.
/one of the reasons my BMW owner experience lasted barely a year
They all are scam artists where I live. Outright liars and cons. I had a test of my radiator done here in Las Vegas at the local Ford dealership and then tested the system when I got home - zero traces of work or UV dye. Not even the dust disturbed. They simply charged me a diagnosis fee and did zero work/a visual inspection of it for leaks when running (despite it losing coolant somewhere over time). It's not getting into the exhaust or oil, so it's a pinhole leak somewhere but I can't find it. The other dealer across town later wanted to charge me for 4 O2 sensors - and when I asked them to test the electrical system since it's impossible for 4 fairly new sensors to fail at the exact same millisecond (obvious secondary system fault) they charged me to read the exact same code Auto Zone's scanner told me and didn't actually do any work. Absolute scum. I even handed them the readout from Auto Zone first and asked them to figure out what this actually meant and 7 hours later all they did was scan, charge, and print out the exact same codes. I later found out it was my fuel pump overheating once the temps got above 115F - which caused a fuel starvation problem. The "fix" was to never let it get below 3/4 of a tank in summer and drive at a light throttle in the insane heat.
