    Dispite negative comments through some of your videos, your ability to deal with them and spin them into a positive is admirable. It was your assembly video that made me reach out to George and place an order... Thanks for your time and efforts. Cheers

      Hey Dave, Thank you for your positive comments! You are going to love this grinder to say the least, I use mine all the time on many different projects, it runs and preforms like no other! George is a great guy and I have keep in touch with him since I bought my grinder. Thanks for tuning in and enjoy your new grinder once you get it!

    That ledge kit is really cool! I welded mine on. How proud is your platen from the idler wheels at 18:09 ? Is it perfectly in line or proud just a little? I just installed a ceramic glass platen on my 2x72 and it made all the difference. I used 3M tape though. Thanks for your video.

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  5 лет назад

      JKeetonKnives I ended up putting a straight edge on the idler wheels and brought the platen flush to the straight edge, so straight in line with the idler wheels.

      @@RaysGarage Thanks for adding this update, I was wondering. Also, does your grinder get a lot of use... how many hours per week for example?

    Nice job Ray! Since glass has a very low friction coefficient that should last you a long time. Hopefully, the edges of the glass plate were rounded so that they won't wear out the belt backing prematurely.

    At 17:26 you are mounting the Platen with the new glass on it. It is my understanding that you really want your platen to be roughly 1/16" proud. I think that using a "straight edge" and making it almost 1/16" proud is best. It looks like you just aligned it with a the belt.

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  4 года назад

      Yes, I do move the platen depending on what I working on, a little proud is good but not too much or you will round the top and bottom edges of the glass and/or platen and is a little harder on the back side of the belts.

    good improvement, brother ray!
    i imagine the edges of the glass are shaped in bullnose.

      Hi Toly, Yes the edges are a bit rounded and the belt glide over the glass very smooth, less heat too! The funnel has been on my mind and am coming up with a plan here soon for it. Thanks for dropping in Toly!

      I found the best/easiest way to sharpen mower blades is with a air angle grinder with a medium sanding disc then a blue Scotch-Brite disc , if you do it correct you can shave with them after sharpened!

I will still wait because there just isn't another that is that good at any price.

    Looks very good Ray, im hopping to see the new shop starting up. I hope you can put some info out on the type sizes of turning tools you have found work good on your lathe. My lathe is the same as your the G0709, I love it but need tool buy new turning tools. Thanks for all you do. Scotty Stewart

      Hi Scotty, Funny you bring that up and will be doing a few new vids on the G0709. The shop build will be starting soon and am real close to breaking ground. My favorite cutting tool is the WNMG carbide insert, both for facing and for turning. most all my tooling is now carbide, it cuts better and lasts a long time, my parting blade is high quality HSS but would like to upgrade to carbide for that as well. Thanks for tuning in!

    I really like how quiet the grinder runs. But under a load I hear what sounds like a knocking sound, is that normal?

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, the noise you hear in the seam where the belt is glued together. If you use good quality belts like Norton Blaze the knocking sound will be greatly reduced.

  • @MrGnsurfn

    I cannot imagine this machine without a guard covering the top and sides of the belt. I have a Wilton 2X72" belt grinder that has a guard and I'm glad it's there. If you you use you're consumables like I do it's just a matter of time till the belt becomes frayed at an edge.

    The best steel alloy would be AR400 or AR500 if you can find it in this kind of size affordably. But I'm sure pyroceram is even better.

    • @RaysGarage

      Thanks man! Yup, Red RTV works like a charm and makes it easy to remove without breaking the glass so you can use the other side, two for one! JB Weld hardens like a rock!

  • @moonolyth
    @moonolyth 5 лет назад +1

    Wow, that machine sure is quite $$. The design is great as it's hard to misalign anything being sandwiched between two thick plates. I've been looking at building my own from several treadmills I've picked up my self. Even a sh_ty machine like this is worth the hassle of building. I like finessing with accuracy too though.
    I really like the logic behind the glass/ceramic plate. I'm wondering how long a regular plat of glass would last or if it would crack with residual heat. May have to try and see, you never know till you try... even if it rubs off I could have ten plates in house ready for replacement. and yes reg. glass is softer than tempered or ceramic infused tempered. Great vid !

      Hello Moonolyth, Take a look at the NRT Mod-E Grinder package, it's a very good economy grinder and check out the video i did on it, I think you will like it! So far this piece of glass is over two years old and still going strong!

  • @bluerazors

    Curious, why would you use glass. I polished 100's of pieces of glass, on glass with water and grit by hand to make optical facets. I understand perfectly flat. But even a borosilicate glass is fragile. What happens when a particle of 36 silicon carbide or AL oxide stuck to the back of the belt cuts it form edge to edge like a glass cutter. I have so many glass cut scars, even one in my eye.
    This is very interesting.
    Also you would get better adhesion if you sandblast the back to give it a tooth this is smooth to a molecule. .... with enough adhesive broken pieces might just stay put? Could be very safe after all, I don't know

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  7 лет назад

      From what I understand, This glass is the same glass used in fireplace doors and its wear properties are harder than tool steel. Yes it will break if struck hard but will outlast all steel platens.

    • @tuttebelleke
      @tuttebelleke 4 года назад

      I am no expert in this field, but I do have also mixed feelings with this solution. The goal is to have a better Wear Resistance. Hardness plays a role in that besides friction and in a minor degree heat conductivity. As there is no common method to measure hardness from glass and metal, it is difficult to compare them. In my opinion tool steel is harder??? About friction, I would guess glass to win??? About heat conductivity, glass looses for sure. The glass platen will run very hot at the small contact spot, I have no idea what impact that could have in real life to the platen and the belt? Can a belt run too hot??? Does a belt need any platen-cooling???
      For the whole there is too many open questions to make a judgement. It would need an equal comparative test to conclude something. And such test could even give a mixed conclusion like: steel is better for rough users, and glass for the fine applications??? A hint for when gluing 2 flat planes together: use a glue comb!

    • @AndTheCorrectAnswerIs
      @AndTheCorrectAnswerIs 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, granite would be no better than tool steel. Granite has a hardness of 7 on the revised Mohs scale. Diamond is 15. Various types of ceramic glass are between 12-14 depending on the chemical composition.
