My Daily Grind: Making a high quality and strong 2x72 Belt Grinder

  • Here's a making of video of my 2x72 Belt grinder. This project took me a long time but I took the time to make quality parts for this very solid (85 kg!!) machine. 2KW motor, horizontal and vertical position and adjustable table. I'm sure this machine will last a long time and I'm looking forward to use this grinder for future projects. Please subscribe to see my future projects and follow me on Instagram (Bart Harkema #Bartsmetalwork) for my daily grind.

    I enjoyed watching your movie. You showed a decent and very careful job: smooth welds, elements perfectly polished and sandblasted. For me, the icing on the cake are brass washers and a beautifully engraved ID plate. A very good varnish on carefully prepared metal allows to believe that your grinder will actually work for many years, as you expect.
    I was particularly delighted with the use of cold forging to achieve exactly 90 degrees - I buy this idea gratefully.
    Compliments from Poland, your grinder is very distinguished by the quality of workmanship. :)))

    Metal warping from welding was a constant cause of stress while I was building my 2x72. At one point I even threw a chipping hammer putting a large dent in the side of my table saw 😔. I loved your solution to the problem, I only wish I had thought of that. Beautiful machine and great video 👍

    Hi Bart and a good day to u. I'm a Senoir Master ASE and have fabbed race cars, race quads, custom equipment of all sorts and in my mind am an excellent fab guy. The best compliment that I can give u is that I would "trust" you to make any part I may need but was unable to do. I am currently rehabbing a spinal and SI joint fusion and would have zero fear of having u make something I need and would even be ok with u making any mods to it u may deam necessary. This is coming from a person that more often than not has scrapped parts I'm not happy with. Great work as always Bart!!!

  • @paulgreenlee190
    @paulgreenlee190 4 года назад +1

    I was impressed with your work Bart, you are the kind of person that makes things happen when others say you can't do it. Your welding and cutting skills could use some polish but that's easy for me to say as a retired welder and fabricator for 40 years. I would have gone a few more years except for health issues that broke me. I was a perfectionist is the only reason I said polish and I believe that you will improve with every build. Now I have a 59 year old South Bend Lathe 13"x72" and I don't get to use it much because of my issues. I would be embarrassed to turn it on in your presence. Your machine skills are second to none, I wish I was able to school you a little on the fab side and you could teach me how to turn the machinery on. I look forward to viewing all of your videos. How anyone could do a thumbs down is beyond me, I don't see these idiots putting out any videos like yours. I'm 67 years old and started out welding with Oxygen/Acetylene Gas Welding and that included what ever came into the shop, Cast Iron, Steel, Stainless Steel, and Aluminum. I also welded Pot-metal like the old door handles of antique cars. I learned to cut steel with a torch using a scribed line and could leave half the line, I might still be able to do that. Our skills have fallen short because of technology making it easier to perform our task. You will always get a thumbs up from me and thank you for sharing a great video with us. All around I'd say you are 99.9% out of 100%. God Bless, the best is yet to come.

      Hi Paul, thanks for the nice commend and info. I try to get a the metal working skills together. I'm not the best welder, not the best machinist, not the best toolmaker, not the best engineer, but I believe I can do it all pretty good. And combining them will open up a lot of opportunities to make machines like this. And every time my skills get a little bit better. I still have the ambition to learn every time I weld or machine a part and am perfectionist (I think you can see that in the video..) like you. Always something to improve. And if I look back a few years then my welding definitely has improved. I just need to do it more often. And I think its the same about the South Bend. Just turn it on and enjoy the learning curve. Learn a new skill is always fun. I plan to do some more sheetmetal projects next year and learn to use the English Wheel. Btw, if you want good tips about machining, check out Joe Pieczynski his channel. Great content. Greetings from the Netherlands, Bart

      @@bartharkemametalworks2299 I didn't intend to be critical Bart, I was very impressed with all your skills and your are at the top of my list. I watch Joe's channel and I am subscribed to his channel as well. Your welding is not bad at all, Look at the finished products you have completed, looks like a big manufacture made it. Most of the time when others on RUclips make something even the grinding is awful, there's a skill set for every step of what you do. Don't listen to me when I was joking around with you on the welding, Your work over all is far above most and will always be because you work at it. That's why I said there is nothing you can't do when you put your mind to it. Be Blessed my friend and if I can figure out how to make a video on what I'm talking about I'll get your email and send it to you. I hope your business soars to the top of the charts Bart you seem like a very responsible and honest individual. Thanks for taking the time to read my comment

    Best design i saw.
    Couple of sugesstions
    1. Place sparks separator near down rear roller (plate close as possble to belt with 30-45 degrees to it) to turn sparks down.
    2. Place main sparks "trash can". Under front down roller box with water with easy dismount. It will not holds all sparks but even if it will catch 70% of it - it makes your workshop cleaner and much easy to cleanup.
    Good luck and thanks. Like and Subcribe :)

    I watched a lot of machinist videos and I love spotting the little personal preferences. When using the lathe you seem to favour cleaning up the OF before the end face, most machinists in North America always start with the end face. I assume that this really is only a question of style? Either way, I hugely enjoy your videos, thank you!

    • @bartharkemametalworks2299
      @bartharkemametalworks2299  4 года назад

      Hi, nice to hear that you like the video's. Thanks. About the Lathe work. I think it depends a lot of the size of the lathe and the part your machining and what you need to machine. Does it need a center? How strong is the grip in the chuck? Is it a interrupted cut? what steel is it? I have no real structure hear and do this by feel. Turning the drive wheel was the max I would put on this Schaublin 102. First thing was putting a center in it. Then I chose the cut with to minimum force on the chuck jaws first. Cleaning the surface and then rotating to get a better grip in the chuck before taking heavier cuts.

    Very nice build to match the other tools you have in the shop. I'm building with limited machines. I've always wondered why it is necessary to build the adjustable clamp/ark piece for tilting the tool from erect to sideways as I don't think it is used at an angle and if so not too often. I want the tilt feature also but think I'll forgo the time and machining it takes for this part.. so long as it tilts and locks down will be sufficient for me. That machine you made would fetch a good price in the market place. Looking forward to building one as it will be one of my go too machines. Cant waite.

    Excellent work and solid like a rock. Welding always makes things warp, especially stainless steel. Shims are good but some plate about 1mm thick is better. Also, if it's not absolutely necessary, don't fully weld everything. The less heat put into the material, the less work correcting it for warping afterward.
    Definitely, one of the best belt grinder builds I've seen. :)

    One of the most informative video's, I take that back. It is the most informative video I've ever seen. I have been around awhile, and haven't seen a video like this with such detail and explanation of all the steps and alternatives to the process without the rambling on about personal thoughts and history. I must say, you are to the point of the process of your project. Great video work and or editing. I commend you and thank you. I am subscribing to your channel. GREAT VIDEO. You should do a video, to show others how to make better video's, and not be so long winded.
