Hey Dave and Carrie, maybe you could do another heating video? Let us know what you liked and disliked about your Wave 6 after using it for a winter and what you like and dislike about you new Wabasto? I'd like to see comparison.
I have a Wave 6, and didn’t know you could run it in that position. The flame originates at the bottom, near the knobs. If set up properly, the entire front element should glow red. It seems like you should have been warmer than 52 degrees. Thanks for the fun video.
Thanks for your great vids! I use a wave-6 heater often. I also use a large floor fan to push the rising heat down to the floor area and it circulates and mixes the air nicely. I got rid of the floor mount and it is suspended by bungees above the heater which is also suspended by bungees three and a half feet off the floor pointed towards my bed. I use extremely strong 20 lb magnets to hold everything. A typical 5lb BBQ size propane tank will last 5 or 6 days if used 24/7 on low. I purchased a double size 10 pounder propane tank & recommend the same or bigger, however, bigger gets a bit heavy to carry. Lastly, this is a catalytic heater. This means there are much less fumes with this combustion. I am still here after 4 winters of use to tell the tale of not being dead after not proper ventilation, too many times. If you want the safest heater out there this is it. And it comes in three sizes: Wave 3, Wave 6, & Wave 8.
I have used a six for ever and a 3 before that. 20 yrs. I use about a third the ventilation. I would close ceiling fan completely and crack window 1/4 inch at most. That’s it. Leave campo 6 on high. In the morning 65 degrees. Yes, 4 inches off floor is best and just across from where you hang out. GT. Much better than diesel. 1/4 fuel cost. Buy 2 worthington 2 1/2 gal tanks. Aluminum. Installation from 10 minutes to an hour.

good info. Glad it worked well 50's is just fine when its sub zero outside! I have the same window vents, they really do work well for air flow. I know you don't generally do campground stays, but if you are some where with an electrical hookup, the cord slides very nicely in the corner between the window and the vent.
I’ve been using the Wave 3 in my van with the drivers window open 1” and am not afraid to run it overnight. The Wave 3 is too small and my back-up Mr Heater Little Buddy died this AM so I just ordered a Wave 6. In the meantime I am using a Coleman propane burner to supplement the Wave 3 but I open the roof vent a small amount in addition to the driver window. I’ve been using the stove for heat for several years and am very excited about the Olympian heaters. The Wave 3 works great and along with the Wave 6 I’ll be warm and safe in any weather.

Hi Dave, I tried to find the ventilation thing you put on the front window, but I couldn't find it in your list of things you use, can you please give me the link to it, thanks.
Hi Heather! i will warn you they are a little pricey. We have also learned that you really need to pay attention when you are installing. It is easy to not get window in the narrow track and it might cause damage. I think we put a hair line crack in the driver side window. It is very minor but we think this is what caused it. Just a word of caution. www.eurocampers.com/search.asp?keyword=promaster+window+vents
Mount sideways like you did. No sound. No fire. It’s a chemical reaction. It does not burn. No maintenance!!!!!!! However for killer results. Mount where it’s right across from you.
As a van dweller of decades YES u want insulation unless u into masochism . Maybe if u grew up in Panama or Iceland u might enjoy endure no insulation .
We did a cheaper diesel heater from eBay in our Promaster. I can say it was the best decision. When up in Denver it was 16 degrees at night while 67 inside our van. I honestly don't see how you all having that huge heater was at 52 degrees.
Awesome, we hope to upgrade to a diesel heater next year! Did yours come with a 10 liter tank or tap into your fuel tank? I been wondering how often those need to be filled up...lets say in a Denver winter.Take care and happy travels.
@@oneadVANtureatatime ours came with a 10L tank. We had to get that type because the Promaster uses gas. If we had a Sprinter, than we'd have gotten the one that connects to the vehicles tank. As far as usage goes, we stayed in Denver for 3 days and only needed to fill the tank once, and it wasn't even empty at the time. Its very efficient. If you're going this route, don't buy into the 8K heaters, they are only 5k. You should watch John McK 47 here on RUclips as he has tested a lot of them and knows his stuff. ruclips.net/channel/UCLxP_AwzCecuipKsLK1uAvQ
Yeah I want to get a Webasto for my 2017 Ford Transit van but their very expensive to put in. They make them for diesel and gasoline (which I have). There’s a place in Portland, Oregon that wants $2600 for one. They say you need another battery for it as well. Thanks for info on the Wave 6.
The front window vents are well-made. Thanks for emphasizing the importance of having air circulation when using a heater. Are you still coming to the RTR?
Brrr, but you guys were toasty. I would definitely need heat. Ventilation is the key. Don't want to die trying to stay warm, that's for sure. Cool shot with the water freezing. :) Stay safe you guys.
Hi Cookie, because we opened the front window and the back fan we had air movement and almost no condensation. We have sense upgraded to a Wabasro dry air heater that connects right to our fuel tank. We love this heater better than this wave 6 heater. We can go in even colder weather and not worry about running out of propane. Let us know if you have more questions we love to be helpful and share what we learn. 😀
Great information. Also, good informative interaction in your comments. Not a fan of the little buddy heaters. Nice to see review on the wave but trying to get away from propane heat due to moisture. I especially like how you mounted it. Personally, I'm not one for leaving any heat source on while sleeping. Stay almost too warm in bed with two cats under the covers with me, LOL, and the rig warms up super fast in the morning. My dog has a profuse double coat and I've lined his crate with a wool blanket so he stays toasty warm. Might have to take a look at a diesel heater, though. However, what I REALLY want is a tiny wood stove. One will fit perfectly inside a centrally located clothing closet. I have other options for the clothes. Just need to remove the closet door and line the closet with insulation and sheet metal. My nephew said he can help with installation as putting in the stove pipe would be difficult for me. Truck campers also have condensation issues, particularly up in the overhead bed area, so dry wood heat would be ideal. Thanks for another great video. Wish I'd found your channel sooner. PS: love that window insert.
We almost went with a cubic mini woodstove but by the time we heard about it we had no room in the van to place it. Your right about liking dry heat. We hope to upgrade to an external vented heater that taps right into our fuel tank someday. It's nice to have a heat source that allows you to travel where you want and not get limited to a certain temperature range. Take care and stay safe.
@@oneadVANtureatatimeSo that Olympian does give off a wet heat because another RUclipsr says that it absolutely does Not.I did not believe that, I believe it does give off moisture.
We didn't notice any difference at 8000 feet. Since this video we have upgraded to a Webasto dry air heater and love it! It however is limited on elevation.
We bought the side air vents from Eurocampers.com. We are very happy with the quality. If I remember correctly they were just over 100 dollars for the pair.
I was kind of surprised to see you guys firing this thing up when tilted on its side. Are those heaters intended to be uses in all directions? I always see them used vertically. Thank you for any info about this.
Wave 3 only has one mounting position (vertical).. the wave 6 and wave 8 can be mounted vertically and horizontally... I have a wave 3 and a wave 6... Bought wave 3 fir my 21ft class B plus... Wave 6 for the living area of my 35 foot class A( I use a 500 watt electric space heater in the bedroom of the class A.. These heaters are phenomenal.. if you cover all your windows with insulation like block out curtains or reflectix. And partitioning the front cab area with a block out curtains to decrease the square foot area being heated. these heaters work well into the 15F keeping the heated area warm I the 60-65F.. which is very comfortable especially with. Heated mattress pad or heated blanket.. The key is ventilation .. open your roof vent by 1/4" and your lowest side vent wind by 1/4".. this will avoid condensation and carbon monoxide risks.. along with a propane detector and carbon monoxide detector ... I have not needed to use the factory I stalled propane furnaces since going with the wave heaters.. I am also going to supplement with a planar or webasto heater if I advanture into colder weather...
Yes! I know they are making a couple types of externally vented propane heaters now. We were looking at one a while back but it was out of our price range. We love how efficient propane is. Take care and happy travels.
Diesel heater all the way: Webasto, Espar or chinese ones with good reviews. No venting needed, no moisture, thermostatic remote control (why let a lot of heat go out the window.)
@@jimsteele7108 On the diesel heater the air intake and exhaust of the burn chamber are located outside the vehicle. What I meant is that you don't need to have any windows open in the vehicle to supply oxygen for the heater. Basically it works the same way as a residential oil fueled furnace. ✌️
Nice. Now I just want to know why the heck you're there at this time of year. Lol. Yeah, I know you'll tell me because of the beauty. It definitely is beautiful with the snow on the ground. Great drone footage. 👍
Have you thought about an electric blanket. I plan to use one. I don't think I'll have more than 6 days in extreme cold.I live in NE Wisconsin. I fiqure it'll take me 3 days to get to warm weather. I don't like the idea of propain in my van.
@@StacyForest738 Look up electric mattress pads on amazon or ebay. They use less power than an electric blanket. They fit between the matrass and the bottom sheet. Also, a Chinese diesel air heater should work well. The cheap ones are noisy. There are better products out there which are supposedly near Webasto quality, yet at a more affordable price point. Look up VVKB heaters from China, or Planar heaters from Russia. The Russian one is quite popular in Europe.
A CAT heater doesn't need power. A diesel heater, like the Espar, uses several amps on startup, less when running. Personally, I'd have both and use as coditions demand

Not that efficient in my opinion. We had it hooked up to a 20 pound tank and when it was super cold, meaning we ran it all night it only lasted 3 or 4 days. We have since installed a webasto heater that taps into our gas tank. It only uses 1gallon of gasoline if you were to run it for 24 hours. Yes, it’s expensive but sometimes it’s worth it!
_Okay, I'm going to make your life a lot warmer and safer, plus gain back your countertop there. I install diesel air heater in all kinds of trailers and vans, plus many more things, it's a game-changer. For your van thinking a 3Kw would do. About $130.00 on up to $300.00 that price is for everything you need in a kit. You can find them on Amazon or __Walmart.com__ they come with many different configurations and a little bit confusing with the controllers though. But once you understand the system, you'll love it. 10L or 15L tanks will run about 23 to almost 40 hours per tank. so all depends on how you set up the pumps. If have any questions please ask, I help you out, and we'll keep it open to all here, that way everyone can get the information too! Besides, the dog can lay right in front of the vent(s) on the floor if he likes. You wouldn't smell burnt hair. : )_
my builder uses those :) . i'm still debating because i'm a little uncomfortable having what is basically a jug of diesel in the van. what's the power draw on the 3Kw ?
Dara Tatum have the tank outside and it draws between 7.7 to 11 amp 3 to 6 minutes for the start up, then drops to .3 to.7 Amos during, then it bumps back to 7 to 10 amp for about 3 minutes to heat glow plug burn off excess for shut down.
@@FirstSuiGeneris wow - they just sip on the battery! any ideas on where those tanks can be found? i'm building on a promaster 136...not a lot of room under there lol
Dara Tatum They come with the kit everything is in one box. You can’t go wrong with them providing that you install correctly. I’m here to help. On a sidenote you can pretty much use any tank that you desire with a little modification.
That's awesome! Someday we hope to upgrade. Did you install it yourself or end up having it installed? We are curious if it's a DIY project and if not how much it runs to have a professional do the install.
@@oneadVANtureatatime Hi there I installed myself its very easy to install, and from what I see in your video you can do it, I think the most important thing is, that is a dry heat and no need ventilation or minimum, no humidity , its very quick to warm up, if you comme to Canada next summer we live in Mississauga Ontario we can install it together. Sylvain & Nancy
I don' t know why people design their vans to have their clothes stored in boxes under the bed, or in wardrobes, or cabinets or something when it would be much better to store clothes flat against the walls to make use of them as added insulation when you're not wearing them.
perhaps not BUT the directions that came with the heater stated that we needed to vent a window at opposite ends of the room. When we followed the directions it wasn't all that efficient. Granted the price point is much more achievable as opposed to the Webasto heater ......
That's a great idea! Lol 😆 We stuffed a few winter clothes up there but still not the best insulated. If you can swing it consider an Espar/Webasto heater. They vent outside and create no condensation. I wish we would have saved up for one.

Totally agree with you. We will upgrade at some point 😀
I have a Chinese diesel heater, works great. Great tips and nice window vent find. Where you get that? It was nice meeting you at RTR
Nice meeting you as well! We ordered the window vent from Eurocampers.com. Just over 100 dollars for the pair. 😎
@@oneadVANtureatatime Thank you for the source!
@@oneadVANtureatatimeToo bad they don't make these for my Overlander Tiger Adventure Vehicle cab.

Thank you 😀
Hi Dave, I tried to find the ventilation thing you put on the front window, but I couldn't find it in your list of things you use, can you please give me the link to it, thanks.
Hi Heather! i will warn you they are a little pricey. We have also learned that you really need to pay attention when you are installing. It is easy to not get window in the narrow track and it might cause damage. I think we put a hair line crack in the driver side window. It is very minor but we think this is what caused it. Just a word of caution.

@@oneadVANtureatatime Thanks for the link and thanks so much for the warning, it's good to know what happened.
great job with the video!
Thank you 😀
what was the window vent called ? super cool
Promaster window vent from Eurocampers.com. Just over 100 dollars for a set of 2 if I remember correctly. They are made very well and worth the money.
Mount sideways like you did. No sound. No fire. It’s a chemical reaction. It does not burn. No maintenance!!!!!!! However for killer results. Mount where it’s right across from you.
Also, I don’t have any insulation in my cargo van. Is that a must?
The Webasto is worth it. The amount of gasoline that it uses doesn't even register on the gas gauge.
The front window vents are well-made. Thanks for emphasizing the importance of having air circulation when using a heater. Are you still coming to the RTR?
We just arrived in Parker! It's late so we will sleep at Walmart tonight and start exploring tomorrow. Are you near by yet?
one adVANture at a time still in Santa Cruz. I’m leaving this morning, and should arrive late afternoon-early evening.
Once is enough of that thing.
Brrr, but you guys were toasty. I would definitely need heat. Ventilation is the key. Don't want to die trying to stay warm, that's for sure. Cool shot with the water freezing. :) Stay safe you guys.
Thank you! I was wondering if anyone watched the end of our video 😀
What about the condensation?
Hi Cookie, because we opened the front window and the back fan we had air movement and almost no condensation. We have sense upgraded to a Wabasro dry air heater that connects right to our fuel tank. We love this heater better than this wave 6 heater. We can go in even colder weather and not worry about running out of propane. Let us know if you have more questions we love to be helpful and share what we learn. 😀
@@oneadVANtureatatimeWhat does "almost"no condensation really mean?
@@oneadVANtureatatime Thanks, you as well. 😊
@@oneadVANtureatatimeSo that Olympian does give off a wet heat because another RUclipsr says that it absolutely does Not.I did not believe that, I believe it does give off moisture.
what's the maximum altitude this will work? does anyone know?
We didn't notice any difference at 8000 feet. Since this video we have upgraded to a Webasto dry air heater and love it! It however is limited on elevation.
Please relocate the carbon monoxide detector higher up close to the ceiling.
LP detectors should be close to the floor...
Thank you, much appreciated.
Where did u buy that side windows vent?
We bought the side air vents from Eurocampers.com. We are very happy with the quality. If I remember correctly they were just over 100 dollars for the pair.
Carbon monoxide is not heavier than air. In fact it tends to be lighter. Propane is heavier than air.
Pete Coventry smell bad?
I like the idea of a vented propane heater. A bit more work to install but much safer, no electricity necessary and you get a thermostat.
@@georgedemean2228 , are you sure they're not vented?
@@jimsteele7108 On the diesel heater the air intake and exhaust of the burn chamber are located outside the vehicle. What I meant is that you don't need to have any windows open in the vehicle to supply oxygen for the heater. Basically it works the same way as a residential oil fueled furnace. ✌️

Do you know of a good one that doesn't drain batteries?
@@StacyForest738 I was hoping you did.😎

Look up electric mattress pads on amazon or ebay.
That's not a bad plan especially for cold weather country.
I've heard these Olympian heaters still give off a moist heat, regardless.
Where did you guys overnight for this video? BLM land? Really cool area and nice work on the video.

@@oneadVANtureatatimeHave fun choking on the dust bowls this winter. What an awful mundane repetitious Boring scenery Arizona is with the exception of maybe lake Havasu & Flagstaff. Went there in 18 when the last RTR was a supposedly good one,, for the RTR that is.
Watched 20 other reviews with same thing. Has anyone watched a vid on how efficient one is or how long it will run on a 20 pound tank.
I am sure it could have kept it even warmer if it was run on high too. Good stuff guys!
Thank you 😀
_Okay, I'm going to make your life a lot warmer and safer, plus gain back your countertop there.

@@oneadVANtureatatime Hi there I installed myself its very easy to install, and from what I see in your video you can do it, I think the most important thing is, that is a dry heat and no need ventilation or minimum, no humidity , its very quick to warm up,

Did you know that sheets are great insulation???
Yes, great advice! I have seen people do that to make a smaller area to heat with good success. Thank you! 😀
I don' t know why people design their vans to have their clothes stored in boxes under the bed, or in wardrobes, or cabinets or something when it would be much better to store clothes flat against the walls to make use of them as added insulation when you're not wearing them.
You should come vist me . I live in Saskatoon Saskatchewan Canada . We are at -39c that would test your rig out .
Yep that would be a good test lol We will need to upgrade our heater for that extreme 😀
Catalytic heaters don't produce carbon monoxide.
Source?
perhaps not BUT the directions that came with the heater stated that we needed to vent a window at opposite ends of the room. When we followed the directions it wasn't all that efficient. Granted the price point is much more achievable as opposed to the Webasto heater ......
Safety first

Wave heaters don't need any power. They just burn propane.
but you still have to plug them in!
No, the wave heaters have nothing to plugin.
They are catalytic heaters that use a chemical reaction to produce heat.
The problem with these heaters is that they combust inside the vehicle. The Chinese Heaters combust INTERNALLY. I would not use one of these heaters.
