I was at the 68 US GP at Watkins Glen and remember the Matra in the pits warming up...The shreik was unreal and have been hooked ever since
It’s nice to see a vintage car owner actually push their expensive toy. I’ve seen so many videos where they preen over their cars at a big vintage event, the mechanics reving and displaying the car only to see the owner/driver putt around the track short shifting and driving like he’s going to the store for groceries. This guy really is enjoying his car!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I agree foot to the floor and if it breaks fix it.
I wax lucky enough to hear one of the last Ferrari v12s at a GP held at Monza. Breathtaking and unforgettable 😊
Without a doubt the loudest meanest F1 sound ever! I remember on the old (The Real!) Kayalami circuit sitting at Leeukop you could hear the Matra accelerating out of Crowthorne with other F1s coming up the hill to Leeukop. It was almost as loud as a Concorde!
I am old enough, and lucky enough, to have heard this at Brands Hatch in 1972. Chris Amon spun onto the grass near me (bottom bend). He fired it up right in front of me. Still the best sounding car I've ever heard.
I think these "pre-winged" F1 cars are some of the best looking cars ever made.
And the most interesting to drive, at least from a simracing point of view.
Oh you're so right on the money! Especially the 1970-71 Ferrari 312B!Take a look!
Niki Lauda said F1 losing 12s and accepting wing downforce ruined the sport. He was right, as usual.
and the greedily panting intake funnels
Oui,....je suis d'accord!😃
Remember when racing was dangerous, and sex was safe?
This car exemplifies the era.
hell yeah it was-those guys were the badasses, not the prima donnas of today
Andy Harman
Couldn’t word that any better
Sex has never been safe.
Making it faster and safer at the same time is not enough for you?

I remember a later version (Ligier chassis) running at the 1976 US Grand Prix at Long Beach. It had similar 12 into 6 exhaust, but with megaphones. The car wasn't too competitive, but the exhaust note was the best of the event.
I was there too. The Matra engine sounded so unique and awesome!!!!
Incredible engine sound & beautiful car
Nowadays, it's all about aerodynamics and everything in F1 has been pussified
+Shogo5000 Incredible engine sound? The exhaust system is merely straight pipe.
And he was short shifting the whole time! When they were red lined back in the day the noise was unbelievable.
I love the old cars from back in my prime, the look and the sound !!!
The 1st time I heard a Matra was a The Glen, 1971. You could hear that thing miles away. They were that awesome.
Matras sounded better than Ferrari or Alfa 12s.
I got to hear the V-12 Matra in 1971 at Ontario Motor Speedway (a non points combined F-1/Indy car race). There were V-12’s there from Ferrari and BRM, but that Matra was the most amazing sound I have ever heard from a F1 engine. I’m so old the first F-1 race I attended was at Riverside in 1960 - Stirling Moss won BTW.
What a glorious noise! The headers and 3 into 1 extension pipes are works of art. One thing is for sure when you raced back then you better live each day like it was your last because once you strapped into one of that era's race car it very well could have been your last. Notice that the driver's helmet is his roll bar. This was back in the day that when you got measured for you drivers suite they also measured you for your coffin. I got to give the old boy driving that machine he has no qualms about standing on the gas
wow fantastic sound this is how F1 cars should sound not like the new ones that sound like a hair dryer
***** i totally agree !
Thanks
Take care
Gillian
***** Stop complaining on how the new cars sound..
Mad Benco no
Titan_Craft Bitch and whine. Thats all people do. The new cars are better in every way.
What a beautiful machine!!!
0:31 protective bodywork goes on - ready for racing!
Magnificent! The sound is truly a v12 symphony!
That sound is just so breathtakingly delicious
Inoubliable, toujours présente (+++)
such a beautiful sound and equally beautiful car....
amazing! sound & design ! 👌👌
I so miss those days!
I was at the Le Mans 24hrs in 88, and a Matra barrelling down the pre chicane straight was awesome, you could hear every gearchange round the circuit,
The Matra-Simca at Lemans in 1973 made you feel like your ears were bleeding. I loved it!
wow! those wore the days when cars were cars, and men were men!!
no ABS and traction control to. love it!
Albert Baaren Almost just the driver and the huge engine! Gottaballs?!
110% agree on you!!! i hate how they have ruined EVERY nowadays cars with electrics and ABS and traction controls etc... :/
Ihan niin!
I wonder what would people say in another 50 years.
Sounds so awesome!!!
Beautiful!, it's like music!, many thanks. Gérard lacey in Ireland.
Wonderfull !!!!!
I visited twice the MATRA museum in Romorantin .....for the real gearhead a must.....
Grazie
the bathtubs of death, the hands of gold, and the balls of steel. that defines well F1 in these days.
yeah I wouldn't want to be in that thing when it left the track
No driver protection whatsoever. Takes a brave man to drive one of these flat out. The engine sounds glorious....RIP to all the F1 drivers who paid the ultimate price. Respect to you all
That thing sounds like a beast!
I have fond memories of the Matra V-12 going full tilt at the Long Beach Grand Prix
nice camera work - good steady hand :)
Drove it hard too. Respect
Exhausts like that would bring back the crowds to F1.
Beautiful.
what an adorable little roll bar
That thing is a monster power/weight is amazing.
Wow! Nice sound!
what a beautiful machine..
Ouahhh... Quel look ! On se croirait dans Star Wars... Superbe voiture !
Forget about modern racing car/motorbike sounds.
Forget about how modern racing cars move through a corner - like they are driving on rails.
Forget about all the electronics that keep them on the road.
THIS is the real deal.
Period.
What a thrill that would be!
What a beauty!
Espetacular😮😍👏👏👏
I remember seeing and HEARING a Matra at Ontario Motor Speedway(yes I’m a boomer) nothing sounded as good as this V-12.
Que c'est beau ça
Devil’s mélodie ❤️❤️❤️
V12 👍😍😍😍😍
he is really hiting that V12 monsterrr!!!
Espectacular..!!
sounds more like a rotary than a v12! and i love rotary engines.
i wish i was born back then...
A rotary ? It's way different than a RX7 or a 787B
Early 90,s saw Robert Dunlop race a JPS rotary Norton bike on the road.It was an ex grand Prix bike.Never forgot the sound or the speed.
Super 👍👍 Maga 👍👍Sound 👍👍 💖💖💖💖💖
Engine...driver... Skill
Nothing else
Ferrari V12s are often described as sounding like ripping canvas;
This Matra V12 sounds like ripping chainmail!
Thoroughly awesome and comprehensively badass.
Best racing car sound ever.
like a symphony
Che spettacolo!
hes drivin that thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! luv it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That thing is a motor with a go cart around it !
1:26 gives me such a huge grin, what an awesome machine.
Hermoso!!!
Ah...! Those were the days when drivers were real men and cars were real machines...!
I miss those Matras
Watched Henri racing on a number of occasions.
V12 instrument music❤️
There aren't many racing engines that actually HURT your ears - but that's one of 'em!
A rotary Mazda engine in a midget, indoors. THAT was loud!
Surely the best sounding internal combustion engine ever! Visit the Matra museum at Romorantin south of Orleans if you ever get the chance.
i miss the v12 and v10 :(
I would pay money to see these things run
vintage racing.... look it up on the google machine VSCCA
the labor day meet at Lime Rock is good, get a pit pass.
When racing was grand!
What a MONSTER
Formula-e never will get this level of excitement when you connect the batteries of the car.
un kart avec un v12. engin de folie
1:27 - steppin out!!
I love this roar more than the moan of the modern F1 bolids.
If you think this sounds great, then you really should listen to the BRM H16 cyl 3 liter engine, from 1966, that is really awesome.
The beginning of the 3 litre F1 era was was absolutly ridiculous, basically go karts with 400 hp
WOW!
que ronco top
i think I am crying right now
Back when all the pilots have BIG BALLS.
EXTRAORDINAIRE
That's just a V12 motor & transmission with a little space for someone to steer it (barely)...Great sound
Motor, tires and a (crazy) pilot.
Cool I guess, but does it offer Apple Carplay or Bluetooth on the Infotainment system?
That motor looks and sounds very much like a V12 Jaguar with a very light flywheel. I wonder of the heritage of that V12.
Jag - 5.0L. Matra 3.0L
Keith Crossley
Ya think? ...
💪💪👋🙌🙌Soundbeast
God they had balls then that they can only dream of now, literally V12 harnessed to his back....jeez
I remember hearing the Matra F1 mire than seeing it. Maybe a Saturn V was louder, but not by much...
PAVANZYL I was at the 1969 moon shot, the closest we could get to the launch pad was 7 miles...... I was 13 years old, it was the absolute LOUDEST thing I had heard! If you stretch your arm straight and make a gap of 1/4 in between thumb and finger, that's how tall the rocket was. When they ignited the engines, now make a circle with that thumb and finger the size of a golf ball, instantly! that's how big the flame was! I can still hear/see it in my mind! I will never forget that!
@@ryecreeks Sure, I was not being serious when I compared the Matra with the Saturn 5. I envy you for seeing and hearing a moon mission. I had to listen on the radio, we didn't have TV!
droooool
mother of sound
pas mal la tuture elle envoi
Do you notice the roll bar is lower than the drivers helmit! They only thought of going faster. How much weight would you add to car if bar was safe for driver?
