- It only felt right to give it a video on its own, even if it didn't stay out on track too long. Matra Simca's 3.0l (183.1 cu in) V12 engine audible for miles at Donington Park with this MS120D, the last of the Matra F1 cars before the team pulled out to focus on Le Mans. Camera angles aren't the best but it only did about 7 laps and getting about Donington with no car is staggeringly time consuming

I was watching the practice day from the hill by Ex-Mühle at the German GP 1972. Chris Amon was the only driver on the track for about 15mins. You could hear all the gear changes etc and you knew what part of the track he was at. The crowd were silent, listening to every note. The car came into view exiting Wehrseifen, revs high as it left the tarmac over the little jumps around Adenau bridge. The queue for bratties and beer didn't move. As Amon then drove past and headed towards Bergwerk, there was a standing ovation for a few seconds, then everybody went back to listening for the section from Bergwerk to Karussell. Sounds like bullshit, but it's what happened. Best sounding race engine I've ever heard.
Epic story and experience I’m sure- Wish I could time travel to that day and place.
I can fully believe it...
I was at Silverstone British GP 94 & 95 - the Ferrari V12's had a similar effect on the crowd (though I did like all the different engine configurations).
94 being better sounding because they had half a litre more capacity (3.5 vs 3.0) before tightening of the regulations.
I would agree. One of the best sounds.
And it's french !
that's how an F1 car should sound !! 😁😁
I cracked up when the guy in the beginning unhooked the battery as it died. His little spin as he walked away and hooked it up again 😂😂😂
He's been there before😂you can almost read his thoughts!
The way he walked round with purpose like "that's quite enough of that" 😂
This is the sound that the GMA T.50 keeps reminding me of.
Same here
Best sounding engine bar none.
I agree and I have watched motorsport for 54 years. I’m convinced however the RUclips videos don’t quite do the sound justice. I suspect because the videos are of historic cars which are no longer revved to the limit. The best sounding cars I’ve ever heard are, in order:
1. Matra MS120
2. Mazda 787B
3. BRM V16
The Ferrari V10 enthusiasts of the 1990s don’t realise what they missed!
@@richardwarren4830great list you have there lol. The BRM V16 is at the top for me. Fierce sounding exhaust note
Days of my youth when the V8/V12 kicked ass. Today, well, let's not even mention it...
Glorious sound…beautifully captured.
Same time: I was at from 1969 till1976 on Flugplatz. Even th eMatra sound was the mos exiting ever!
Glorious. F1, please note, this is what excitement sounds like!
The best sounding engine! Ever!
Probably the best- loudest- and scariest sounding F-1-engine ever....👀👽
What a glorious noise! Great video my friend, thanks for posting...
Such a beautiful video which brought back wonderful memories of covering Canadian GP at Mosport Park. The sounds from the Matra are locked in my old memory banks as they could be heard miles away from the track. Well done
One of the greatest v12 ever
Why on earth would I want to exchange that with any sort of electric garbage.
This sound give me smile 🤗
5:16... divine! even the doppler effect making it higher-pitched!
very beautiful sound
Great video, I do like how you didn’t cut shots as the car went out of view, but kept it running to capture the sound. Nice touch that.
You could hear it no matter where you were on the track so it was quite hard to cut it😅! It feels like a crime
Chris Amon , when asked about the sound of the Matra , replied that it was a glorious noise , but that half the horsepower exited with the exhaust .
He also said that at the end of the ' 72 season he met with the Director of the Matra racing program who asked him if he thought it worthwhile for Matra to continue in F1
and he replied " Not with that engine . "
Curiously though , it's the engine he used in arguably his best ever drive in F1 , The "72 French GP at Clermont Ferrand . From pole position to basically last after a puncture , he drove back throught the field to finish 3rd . The headline in the local paper the next day read " Congratulations Mr Stewart , but THANK YOU Mr Amon ! "
Amon said that it was after this race he realized he would never win a Grand Prix ....
Awesome sound orchestra of sound
50 + years ago racing cars were way more awesome and exciting than nowadays 4 wheel robot vacuum machines 🤣😅😂
Sdd dessa maquina! Tem um som e visual muito legal!
Un suono meraviglioso! 📢
And that Bentley GT3 car sounds monstrous too
Sweet-----brings back memories, but the mesmerizing hushed whir of those electric engines these days is hard to beat. lol
oh my gosh i love it
Great looking and sounding car
Very nice sound
If only modern F1 cars sounded 10% this good.................
This IS a grande posting, mes amis. BUT, if the truth be told, the sounds produced on a street circuit, such as Long Beach, are mind-boggling and visceral !
Nice video sounds very nice
This video makes me recall C.Amon as a poleman at Monza GP at the wheel of this car.
Perhaps in the year 1971/1972.The average speed on the fast lap was 252,00 Kmh or so,for sure the fastest ever recorded at Monza back then. The engine sounded so high pitched and exciting yet melodious at the same time.Valuable upload Sir !
P.S.The driver in your video seems pretty skilled to me.
1971
@@hmdwgf Thanks....🏁
Awesome
It’s not MS 120 D but MS 120 C. What à sound !
Great capture! Thanks for all the hard work you do in bringing this to youtube. It still baffles me that they let single seaters and tin tops out together at Donnington.
Track time isn't cheap.
I think it's just to maximise track time for everyone. It is still largely popular, although I have to say seeing a Citroen C1 on track with things like a Lotus 78 does produce interesting results!
The "Tiffosi" will never admit to this publicly, but, deep inside they know the Matra 12 engine had a more beautiful sound than the Ferrari 12. And to the unbiased ear, this is ululatingly.obvious. In Polanski's 1971 documentary film "Weekend of a Champion", it was so clear when a Matra went by, because the sound was so distinctive.
Humanity is devolving.
Second best to the BRM V16 ! ❤❤❤
He’s no Amon or Laffite but it sounds wonderful.
Laffite drove the Ligier Matra, Amon and Beltoise were team mates when i first saw the MS120 at Silverstone 1971.

Thank you Terry.
You were indeed blessed to be present then.
J'ai travaillé dessus an 2004
I'm sure they want to cancel the historic F1 weekends cause cars like this one reminds them the embarrassing sound modern engines make.
