  • Chris Ashworth records a series of 1950s Indy Cars at Michigan International Speedway. This was a vintage racing event that was associated with the Concours d'elegance of America, where these cars were on display after this event.
This event was incredible! I got to wander in the pits and the garage area. You will hear these cars starting up right from the tailpipes, and you will see them driving on the track from the pits.

Yes, but those cars were deathtraps in the 50s. 14 of the 33 drivers who started the 1958 Indy 500 eventually died in crashes within 10 years or so. Sunday's big crash would be unsurvivable back then. But the driver walked away !

Damn it I need to get to one of these vintage Roadster events before I leave the planet. This one is at IMS and I was there for the first Indycar race in 1981. In 2007 at the Rolex Reunion at Laguna Seca the featured car were Roadsters which I attended as well. My first 500 was 1957 when I was age 12.

I think the red one is a small block Chevy, but I wasn't there. My guess is that tire and track speed restrictions, and the desire for self-preservation prevent the drivers from opening up the throttles on these cars. The Novi s "screamed". I was fortunate to have grown up close to the IMS in the 50's and 60's so I had many opportunities to cover my ears when the Novis took to the track.

Born and raised in Indy. Unfortunately too late to see these open wheel roadsters race. I would love to drive one sometime. Not real fast, but fast enough to get the feel. I believe that Indy and F1 in the 50's - 70's were really the days of gladiators of racing. It is sad when a driver dies in a crash. But imagine how alive they all feel while in a race. I was a paratrooper in the Army. Jumping, especially at night with full combat gear is a rush. I believe that they give somewhat the same feeling.

The # 31 car is a 1957 Kurtis craft roadster originally driven by Andy Linden and owned by McNamara/Kalamazoo Sports. In 1958 owned by Smokey Yunick and driven by Paul Goldsmith. The #7 is a 1958 Kurtis craft built with independent front suspension it was driven by Johnny Thompson. The #1 car is A.J. Foyt's 1964 Indy 500 winning car ( Chief Mechanic George Bignoti ) a Watson roadster. All 3 have Offenhouser overhead cam 4 cyl. engines. The #82 car is THE first chevy V-8 powered (also fuel injected) car to run at Indy in 1960! Incredible cars all.

Scott Golden - By 1964, we're talking 155-160mph avg qualifying speeds. AJ's roadster was the last front-engine to win at Indy, and was already up against quicker rear-engine cars that year, (not to mention getting through the horrendous early-race accident that killed Eddie Sachs and Dave McDonald).
#1 was the peak of roadster development, driven by one of the most bad-ass drivers to ever sit behind a wheel.

I wanted to have Bill autograph them and get his photo with them to document them but sadly he passed away before I could ask him. He was track manager for many years, among other things. Being a long time resident of Indianapolis, I actually recognize most of these cars. The red one, I believe, was entered in the 1959 500 but was not qualified. It had been assigned to Ralph Liguori . It was a Maserati powered car. The yellow number seven was driven by Johnny Thompson to a top ten finish in the 1956 500. The white # 1 was the 1964 winner piloted by A.J. Foyt.

My folks and I would go to Milwaukee the week after Indy in the late '50s. All of the big names were there. We sat in the start of the home straight-away coming out of the #4 corner. Coming around that corner to the green flag was the greatest sound. Most of them were Offenhauser's.

Absolutely fantastic. Thanks for including some good track sound, which so many vid's like this do not.

I just realized : the period videos in black and white and no sound with these cars did not do them justice.
These cars are impressive in sound and looks

That Corvette engine has practically no inertia at all! Love the way it grunts and immediately silences once you lift the throttle.

These cars are impressive in the same way as a steam locomotive, but the British came along in then sixties and demonstrated the benefit of advanced design, light weight and putting the engine in the back!.
