  • I made a seat hoop for this bike some years ago, made it so it fitted a aftermarket cheap cafe racer seat. I decided to weld a new seat hoop on top of the original one. I thought it looked decent at first, but the seat was quite hard and the seat hoop was a bit low on the bike. The part where the shocks are bolted to the frame was very bulky. As time passed by I became more and more dissatisfied with the looks of it. I finally decided to redo it.
    In this video I am starting the process of redoing it all. Starting from scratch. I have spent more time on planning this time ( • Honda CB400 cafe racer... ).
    This time I have built a new seat hoop that I think fits better to the bike, I even built the a pipe bending machine to make it ( • How to Build a Pipe Be... ). I will have to make a new seat later that fits to the seat hoop.

    00:30 Jacking the bike up
    01:30 Taking stuff off the bike
    02:08 Measuring and taking more parts off

    05:15 Cutting off the old seat hoop
    07:00 Preparing the new seat hoop
    09:00 Test-installing the new seat hoop
    11:00 HELP: Did I cut too much?

      I am soooooo glad to hear that 🤩 I do learn a lot myself from watching others RUclips videos, nothing makes me more happy than hearing that my videos can provide some inspiration or skills😊

    Well, if us telling you that you cut it too low makes you do another video where you correct the work, yes! Hell yes you cut it too low 😂👏🏻👏🏻 really great video Mr. Felgen 😆🤩 and damn that bump in quality is so great to see 🎥 another great video! I really loved how you showed the bulb of the leverer in the frame when adjusting the bike 👌🏻 these are details that elevate your productions as well 🎉 cheers

      Haha, I don't really need this as an excuse to make another video - I have plenty of video ideas as is, I don't need more of them 😬😂🤣
      These small details are fun to include (the leveler), glad to hear you still can notice video quality improvements. I guess I need more time with the Panasonic LUMIX S5ii before I am fully comfortable using it, but it's getting there i hope 😊
      Have a nice trip home from Denmark!

    It looks good as is. If anything lower the front a very small amount. Keep the Tank and 'blend' it in. To my mind the original tank fits in with the overall concept. Good stuff!!

      I'm glad you support the idea of keeping the "strange" fuel tank 😊 It's not the classic styled cafe racer tank, but this is a bike from the 80s and I've finally decided to keep it and I will try to make the bike look like a cafe racer brat / scrambler hybrid motorcycle - as if it was made in the 80s.

    I thin kit looks good, maybe an extra cm higher at the end could do, but if you leave it as is, it would still look great. Nice to see some progress.

    yes you are overthinking it
    it flows as is and the lift at the back will change the look massively so for my money it's right
    right for this stage before the lift :)
    have a great day :)

      Yea, I guess when I come to the point that I ask myself if I am overthinking it - I have probably been overthinking for quite a while😣
      Thanks for your thought! 👍👍👍😊

    Great idea to 3D print a jig to use as a hole saw guide. Yes, there are dedicated hole saw jigs for tubing sawing, but how often would you use a very expensive tool.

    • @kihestad
      @kihestad  11 месяцев назад

      Yes, and it worked very well. The problem for me was the hole saw itself, it was very worn and had not very much precision. I will buy a better quality hole saw next time and see if the result gets even better.

    The line of the new seat hoop looks great to me. However, my only motorcycle experience was with a Triumph 650 Bonneville hardtail chopper. Not easily compared to a Cafe racer.

    Personally I think it looks good but I find there are 2 aspects to look out for the height of the rider (you don't want your knee's round your ears) and the other is if you like it if you like the way it looks then do it, just make sure you have enough clearance for the rear tyre not to clash with the seat.

    • @kihestad
      @kihestad  11 месяцев назад +1

      I will absolutely consider this. I have already lowered the foot pegs to get better riding comfort, and I will not have a super-slim seat. The tank is quite bulky so I think a "fatter" seat will work. The shocks has approx 6cm travel, at an angle I guess the real travel is max 10cm. I'll make sure I have enough clearance for that. Thanks for the tips! 👍

  • @DifferentRides
    @DifferentRides 11 месяцев назад +1

    what is going to work the height is where you will weld the brackets for the rear shocks , all good there!

    • @kihestad
      @kihestad  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, that is actually a very good point! I have setup the bike as it was originally with the swing arm at it's lowest position, but I notice I can lower it if I want.
      Thanks for the tips! 👍

    For me its the fuel tank the problem. The loop is good.a mojave style fuel tank will look great.

    • @kihestad
      @kihestad  11 месяцев назад +1

      Fair enough! I have considered to swap the tank to a more classic / traditional tank, I even made a poll about it (keeping the original tank got most votes 😵 ). I have decided to keep the tank (at lest for now), but I do agree - a classic tank would probably be easier to work with 😌

    I'm curious about the suspension sag/travel, but otherwise I think it looks good.

    • @kihestad
      @kihestad  11 месяцев назад

      I better take a closer look at that before I continue. The shock travel length is approx 6cm, on an angle I guess it will be more. The clearance is approx 10cm now. Thanks for the tip!

    I think it will look fine once the end is bent upwards. I'd check and see how it looks with some weight on the bike, It's gonna squat a little. If you haven't already welded it, you might think about drilling and plug welding the joint seeing as how you have that inner pipe there.

    • @kihestad
      @kihestad  11 месяцев назад +1

      That is a good advice! 👍 Probably best to spot weld first and test it with weight on the bike before the final weld. The springs are somewhat soft so it will definitely squat 😁 I have planned to but/edge weld the pipes, so I am not sure if plug welding is really needed? Perhaps it adds extra strength? It's not much work, so maybe I'll just do it. Thanks a lot for good advices!!! 👏👏👏

    • @BruceLyeg
      @BruceLyeg 11 месяцев назад

      In my opinion it will be just fine without the plug welding but it wont add any weight, just a little strength. I've always been of the thought that it you can improve something (even if only slightly) and it isn't at the cost of something else (such as weight) then do it. The extra work is minimal with your skill level and time shouldn't be of any significance.
      I suppose that was a rather verbose way of me saying it's perfectly acceptable as is, but could be ever so slightly improved with not much more work, but whatever you do with it will be the correct decision. You're a skilled, talented, intelligent and sometimes even humourous. Go with your gut

    It looks great! I don't think you cut too much! Just lower the front some more to compensate if you did.. 😊

    • @kihestad
      @kihestad  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, I have actually considered lowering the front a notch more. That is quite easy, and reversible as well if it turns out to be too low. Thanks for the tip! 👍

    Are you going to drill and plug weld the frame, hoop and supports to tie them to the inserts? Then coplete the but welds around all the tube joins. The new line looks good to me, just make sure the ergonomics fit you. IMO I would change the tank as i'm not a fan of that shape, you know straight away what the donor bike was.

    • @kihestad
      @kihestad  11 месяцев назад

      I will only edge / but-weld the pipes.I have grinded the ends to 45⁰ and will leave a tiny gap before welding. The weld will fill the gap and go into the inner tube as well. This way I can grind down the weld seam to get it flat without weakening the weld.

    i think it looks good...i would concentrate on rear suspension travel...putting an incline on the rear most part of the subframe could help you out here.

      @kihestad  11 месяцев назад +1

      I have planned to tilt upwards the rear part of the hoop to fit a fender there. I'll do some testing to make sure it's room for the wheel under the seat hoop when max compressed. Thanks for the tips 👍

    Another nicely made episode. For my money the loop height is correct, and maybe looks a little low until you curve up the end. I'm assuming you are keeping the rear shocks the original length?

    • @kihestad
      @kihestad  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks Ryan ☺️ I have bought new shock but they are replica of the originals. I might have to extend the upper bracket on the shocks, as the original shock mount is a bit low and I probably want to put the new one in the 'corner' where the diagonal pipe meet the horizontal one.

  • @BriSouth
    @BriSouth 11 месяцев назад

    Looking good! Have you considered dropping the headlight and bars a smidge to better align with the straight profile? Also, changing the subframe construction of course changes the angle of the rear shocks so they no longer mirror the front forks. Possibly lengthen the swingarm (or move the upper mounting points location further forward) to change the rear shocks angle to once again mirror the front? Thanks for the videos, I enjoy watching your progress!

    I think the height is good. It seems to follow the line from the bottom of the tank. I'm interested to see how you bend the back of the hoop.

    I think if you are going to swap out the tank with a flat bottom tank then I think it works well, especially if you’re going to kick the tail end of the hoop up. If you’re going to keep the current tank I would raise the the back end half a centimeter.

      Tack så mycket! 😊 Tires: Front: 110/80 - R19, Rear: 120/80 - 18 - both are Michelin Anakee Wild. Remember to check width of your rims if you consider wider tires than what is original. My bike has "Comcast" rims, width: 2.15". Older Hondas have "Comstar" rims, they are not as wide and it might be that these tires are a bit too wide for them. Not sure how wide the rims the Suzuki has, better take a look!

      @@kihestad thank you so much. I’ll check the wheels more detailed. I really want Continental tkc 80 tires, I hope they will fit. I’ll keep follow your series from the first Honda episode to the last.
