Cailou’s problem was him trying to be both relatable and a role model for kids. Role models aren’t supposed to be relatable, they’re supposed to be an ideal that you should to live up to. For example, Elmo isn’t very relatable as a character. What kids are supposed to do is look at how kind and compassionate Elmo is, notice the way all his friends love him, internalize that, and grow up with the message of treating others with kindness. Same goes for Superman. Cailou should’ve either been unrealistically kind and well behaved, or be a realistic toddler and get visibly punished for his actions.
Thats the problem with most new western fictional characters and reboots. All they care about is surface level qualities, all they make is charicatures and not characters
For all the problems I have with Superman being too perfect and powerful, I will always give him that no matter what. He was a damn good attempt at a good role model, even if not appealing to me personally
In a realistic world, Cailou will grow up as the 20yo youth who recklessly drove his car which ended with him fatally running over a pregnant lady, but somehow he managed to be bailed out by his dad, while Rosie is now an antisocial highschool student who suffers anxiety disorder and has trouble in communicating due to the constant abuse by his brother and negligence by their parents.
Something that's funny, I've heard about parents contacting Netflix to have Caillou blocked on their accounts so their kids can't select it, with Netflix apparently acknowledging that this has become a popular request.
Don't forget that they also made several episodes that attacked their critics. A great example is The Return of Slade: where they tease one of the best villains of the original animation, then they make a stupid quip and make it an episode about how adults shouldn't be watching things for children. Which I think is the worst thing you could even joke about. Parents should know what their children see. And the very reason people would watch the show is to introduce what they loved to their kids.

The target demographic certainly doesn't hate it, the show is really only hated by people who like the old anime show of it. I don't watch CN much but from the shows I have seen, it's a better show than most of the ones on that channel. (Before you mention one of the very few good CN shows, I didn't say all of them just most.)
I work with autistic preschoolers and one of my kids a few years ago acted like a complete brat, throwing tantrums whenever he didn’t get his way, and being mean to his peers. We spoke to his mom and she told us that he watched “nothing but caillou”, which we thought because he would repeated Caillous lines from the show in a sort of scripted way , even when he tantrum. We literally told her to cut out Caillou, and start disciplining him whenever he misbehaved (she really wasn’t doing that at all) and his behavior improved a lot afterwards.

Caillou was a bad example for kids. Unlike Sesame Street and Clifford The Big Red Dog where they taught kids manners, all Caillou ever teached was how to be a spoiled brat. And it's mind blowing to see he never faced any consequences for his behavior not even 10 minutes in the corner.

D.W. may be annoying and willing to mess with Arthur, but at least she gets punished more than Caillou. 6 times at least sent to her room and at least once grounded for a week for breaking a frog statue and a vase. She was also grounded for a week for watching a restricted television show behind her parents' backs. In fact, when the Tibble twins imitated violence in front of D.W. the end result is why she earns my sympathy more than Caillou.

When I was a kid, I didn’t trust Caillou because he was bald, so I didn’t watch his show. Now that I’m an adult, I've learned to judge people based off the fiber of their character and actions rather than their appearance. Now I don’t trust Caillou because he’s a huge b-
It's so weird how bald kids was pretty common as a character design, like in Ed, Edd N' Eddy. They weren't role models either but at least they were fun and was clearly meant to be "Don't be like these characters" since they always got their plans backfired.

It would have been nice if when Cailou had a melt down, his parents actually sat down and talked to him about why he blew up and how he could have reacted differently, and administered a punishment appropriate for his age and the scale of his mistake. If we contrasted with how Cailou thought things would turn out in his imagination with the reality of what actually happened. Instead we just got meltdown after meltdown with zero consequences. I'm convinced AOK's Cailou the Grown Up series is exactly how Cailou ended up.
Same. There was something that made my stress vein pop out, but because I was like 2 and had no concept of channel changing yet I had to wait it out until something like Dragon Tales or Clifford came on. If not, then surf to Blue's Clues or Cartoon Network.
Shit I'll be real here and just say that I liked Caillou as a child. Listen be honest guys. A large part of children had to like this show for it to be successful. Think about it like this though. Your a kid who doesn't know what is good, so a child getting whatever he wanted seemed like heaven lol. Thank god my mother and father weren't dumb enough to just let me act like that character. Now I look back at it in disgust. God it kills me to think that I liked this as a child, but your very impressionable as a child so it makes sense. For some reason Caillou actually taught me a lesson at one point. Whenever I was a child I was afraid of bees and I would always freak out. But I was watching sprout one day and I saw this episode of Caillou where they told me to stay still whenever a bee is near me and they won't sting me, and it actually worked. I learned something from Caillou. True story.
I just found out in a compilation video that in the reboot, Caillou's parents are actually disciplinary and ground him whenever he did something wrong. It's a miracle that a reboot of a preschool with worse animation and voice acting than the original actually fixed a problem that everyone had with the original.
I have witnessed Caillou hate in person. I saw this kid and his mom at the library recently, and the kid pulled a Caillou book off the shelf. The mom told him no, because all Caillou does is whine and throw tantrums. I laughed and agreed.
I had someone in my church put an anti caillou petition on Facebook. That left me confused, as the show was pretty much dead for years at that point. I asked why in the comment section, and she left a rather long reply about how “cailou is a bad influence for children.”

My Headcanon for Caillou is that he had cancer so his parents let him get away with anything he wanted because he wouldn't live long. The episodes have the haze around them and have the grandma narrator because she's telling back some of Caillou's favorite experiences to him while he's on his deathbed.
They're still terrible parents in that scenario. By indulging their terminally ill child, allowing him to be a brat and bully their other child, they're allowing him to use his disability to treat others poorly. I wouldn't be surprised if Rosie were to look forward to him dying.

First of all, _please_ watch your language! Second of all, it's okay for him to be bald, it's not that big of a deal... Third of all, he originally wouldn't tend to face any _mild_ consequences, such as violence and life-termination. Fourth of all, I really love him no matter what, I have already said it. He may be acting spoiled because he oftentimes didn't get what he really wanted, but that's still okay! It really doesn't matter to me about his childish behavior. The concept of having a very flawed child that learns lessons over time is a solid idea, but the show really does not handle it well. Caillou rarely gets comeuppance for his constant misbehavior, he never really learns important lessons. Its not even really his own fault, the parents are just way too kind to him...I'm all for caring and loving parenting, but there is definitely such a thing as being too nice.
Thank god I love Horrid Henry more than Caillou! It’s because he has considerably more character development in comparison to the rather badly executed Caillou.

I think what really bugs me about the show is how Caillou bullies his sister lowkey and his parents barely do anything to stop it. Its like these people want Caillou to turn into a male karen when he grows up.
I know a kid like Calliou in real life 😔 He’s a good kid at his core, but his parent isn’t interested in being a parent and disciplining him. I feel sorry for him honestly.
I've got a similar situation going on. Kid's smart beyond his years, but the lack of discipline makes him do things that I'm surprised he isn't bullied into the next dimension for. Especially the way he's being conditioned to treat women due to his role models in that regard. There isn't help for it really, spoiling and not disciplining your kid isn't seen as abuse as it's technically not harming their physical well-being, even though it will once they get old enough for their misguided view of the world to start having consequences.
And therein lies the problem. Cailou has TWO parents who don't seem interested in laying down any rules. (throw a tantrum and you get sent to your room. Complain about dinner, no dessert) No discipline in the home is bad for parents and kids.
Oh dear gawd...I remember my now 21 yr old son watching Caillou when he was four...and him looking at me when Caillou was a BRAT and saying “why isn’t he in the time out chair 🤨? I’d be in time out if I did that”. I was never so proud.
That's why I never watched the show as a kid, I couldn't understand how he was such a brat and got away with it and the show just annoyed me and made me mad. It was the one show where both I and my mother agreed that it was bad so I never watched it unless someone else was.
Some of them even grow up and make self absorbed RUclips videos, while standing in front of the camera blocking the video and shouting about what a big brat Caillou can be.
I think the reason Caillou's so infuriating is because he's written perfectly. Perfectly as in he is a perfect representation of a spoiled little best with shitty parents.
He's opposite Charlie Brown. Chuck is a really decent person that takes on all the responsibility on himself and things never work out for him, but he's forever optimistic. Caillou is selfish, wants everything his own way, and he always gets what he wants with no consequences.

Ironically Robot Chicken did a sketch parodying Caillou called Kaiju where it's a Kaiju from Pacific Rim in the role of Caillou, and it has a version of the theme song written and performed by Weird Al!!!

Accurately portraying the child is a good thing, that's something to respect about the show. Refusing to bother with addressing that makes it the most hatable show in existence.

To be honest, I used to enjoyed Caillou as a kid and now I understand everyone hates Caillou and why Caillou ends up such an unlikable spoiled brat and failed to be a decent role model that young kids can related to him. That's bad parenting and bad child learning in animated kids show.
A perfect example of Caillou done right is Horrid Henry. In the show, Henry is a bad behaved child, torturing his family and friends, and always getting in trouble. However, unlike Caillou, Henry, in one way or another, gets some kind of Consequence for his actions, thus teaching kids if you acted like Henry, you'd know what would be in store for you.
That’s why partly why I like the first 3 seasons of Horrid Henry. Season 4 and beyond however is terrible because the episodes are either boring or turn ludicrous. And Henry isn’t even that horrid in those seasons. Which kind of defeats the purpose of the books and the series if you ask me.

@@kattozilla74 it’s pretty normal for kids to go through that, because since they’re maturing so fast, a four year old’s interests are vastly different than a two year old’s, and so on. I’m 22, and stuff for teenagers feels like it’s for babies now too.
I've heard many, many accounts of why people hate Caillou. What always aggravated me about these accounts was that they rarely, if ever, mentioned how he NEVER gets in trouble, which is the main reason why I hate the show. Thank you so, SO much for bringing this to attention!
Peppa Pig has a very similar problem to Caillou; almost no discipline given by the parent characters. Caddicarus specifically tore that show a new one for that reason and many others besides.
I've heard some claims that "Horrid Henry" is worse, but least Henry gets punished for his actions. (At least from what I've seen) Cailou gets off scott free for *pinching his sister* with only a mild scholding from his dad.
I grew up watching caillou and turned out fine. I only throw tantrums and throw myself on the ground screaming at the top of my lungs until I get my way twice a day instead of every single time things don't go my way.
Hell, even Barney was a better show than Caillou. At least Barney sent the message that you should be kind to everyone and take care of each other. Caillou just sent the message that it's okay to be a brat.
More than likely, the shows creators are the "you're never in trouble" types of people. The ones that believe disciplining a child is harmful to their growth and would call CPS if they saw you putting your kid in line.
Considering his greatest moments were in The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, and those made-for-TV movies, especially Ghoul School, yeah, I can agree that he's more likable than Caillou
Scrappy Doo may have been brash and impulsive, but at least he's got good intentions and his heart's in the right place - even if it gets the Mystery Gang into more trouble sometimes
Great video...in all fairness, it seems like Caillou's behavior not only improved later in the run (aka the "yellow shirt" era), but he also learned from his mistakes, such as the episode where he and Leo make their friend Clementine cry after calling her "stupid", then after Rosie picks up said term, Calliou's mom sets him straight, and he subsequently apologizes to Clementine.
I once read an article about the fact that basically every baby and toddler is a narcissist. In the first years of a kids life they just are aware of their own needs and emotions. They throw tantrums because they cant understand when their needs and emotions are not met. This first years is when they learn the concept of things consequences of action (touching a hot plate hurts for example), empathy and other social skills. They learn that not only their needs and emotions exist, but that others have the same feelings too, and that they can influence other peoples feelings (making them happy with giving them a hug etc.). So parenting basically means to train their kids NOT to be narcissists, which is kinda the default setting for toddlers. By not raising your kid, and setting boundaries or praising good social behavior you are basically allowing your kid to stay a narcissist, so they will eventually fail to understand why life around them doesn't work the way it did then they where little. So they have to gradually learn from their surroundings and hope to cope some day. Furthermore enabling a toddlers negative behavior like seen in the show will very likely actively make them narcissist as adults. So yeah, that kid is gonna be a serial killer lol.
Narcissism only seems like the default because the majority of Westerners are genetically inferior as a result of their civilization's consistent worship of power and cancerous demand for growth. Let children be themselves and figure out empathy on their own because the ones who can't should not be allowed to reproduce in the future.
Manny from diary of a wimpy kid us a good example of this. He uses fake emotions to manipulate his parents, blackmailed Greg, and once turned off all the power in the house except the power in his room DURING A BLIZZARD, putting his entire family in mortal danger, and then excuses it by saying he did it because no one taught him how to tie his shoes. Shoes that DON'T EVEN HAVE FUCKING LACES. How did he turn off the power? He used the circuit breaker. Yhen there's the time he broke Greg's console by putting a cookie inside it, and he uses his age as an excuse, saying "I'm onwy thwee". It's even said that Manny breaks Greg's stuff ALL THE TIME.

Legends say that there was a sequel series to Caillou made right around the same time as the actual original series. It shows Caillou as older in elementary school and also his friends but Caillou has a different name in the sequel series. I think he changed his name to Eric Cartman or something, idk.

This is accurate. Susan Heffley (Manny's mom) let's him get away with everything, and is an overall terrible parent, and Hank Heffley (Manny's dad) is basically a deadbeat.
Yes, but Caillou is just an average little kid. Manny is shown to be smart and cunning for a 3/4-year old and is arguably a lot worse than Calliou is. At least Caillou doesn't misbehave in every single episode (even in seasons 1-2). Hell, he even tries to redeem himself on very rare occasions. He whines and complains quite a bit and his parents don't really do much about it most of the time. They're good and well-meaning parents, they're just way too lax with discipline and structure. I'm not saying "go whip your kid when he talks back", I just wish for them to at least teach their son (and daughter to a lesser extent) a lesson and then move on with their day. I'm not a parent and I don't fully understand how parenting small children works, but hey, at least I tried my best. Still, I find Caillou to be a bad influence for kids because they might copy some of his whining and tantrums. Now back to Manny. OK, Manny is arguably worse than Caillou is in terms of behavior. Remember that time in "Cabin Fever" where he purposefully locked Greg's Net Kritterz account and deprived the entire Heffley family of heat and warmth because no one taught him how to tie his shoes? How about in "The Getaway" where he ruined the football game in favor of his favorite TV show? Or when he made imaginary friends just so he could get out of trouble and earn more treats? That boy knows exactly what he's doing; he's not your average little kid.
Meanwhile on Child Abuse Island (Hell Grizzly Tales is just Goosebumps but make it child abuse) there's Horrid Henry whose parents hate him just for being a normal 10-year-old
To be fair most kids try to insist they aren't babbies the moment they learn to talk. I remember my little brother (6 years younger) would scream at the top of his lungs he wasn't a baby anytime he so much as heard the word directed at him. So that part of his behavior makes sense as children are often desperate to be treated more maturely.

I'm a psychology major and have read Dolto's writings about children, I've lost count of how many of my teachers and colleagues in the child psychology field LOATHE how Caillou spread misinformation about Dolto's writings.
I'm not a psychology major, but I'm pretty invested in the subject, as I suffer from mental illness. This doesn't surprise me that much: Media outlets in general have a super bad track record of accurately portraying things related to the field. :X
@@MASTEROFEVIL while it is true that in a nutshell Dolto wrote about how children's bad behaviour stems from a lack of knowledge in articulating negative emotions and feelings, the show never goes into how important it is for parents to communicate with their children, it's not about letting children blow off steam, it's about guiding them though those negative emotions, but you wouldn't get that from the show.

I've actually worked with parents who have an autistic kid and were shocked to learn that, what's worse was that their response to learning that their kid was on the spectrum was, and I quote: "but our kid doesn't act like Rain Man". It's a good thing they taught me composure and how to be even tempered in college, because I wanted to roll my eyes out of their sockets when I heard that.

Heck there are full grown adults in the world who cry like they're 2 (expect the vast majority of them are too prideful to do it publicly). Additionally crying is a key way to relieve stress. Cailou’s problem was him trying to be both relatable and a role model for kids. Role models aren’t supposed to be relatable, they’re supposed to be an ideal that you should to live up to. For example, Elmo isn’t very relatable as a character. What kids are supposed to do is look at how kind and compassionate Elmo is, notice the way all his friends love him, internalize that, and grow up with the message of treating others with kindness. Same goes for Superman. Cailou should’ve either been unrealistically kind and well behaved, or be a realistic toddler and get visibly punished for his actions.

Don't forget that they also made several episodes that attacked their critics. A great example is The Return of Slade: where they tease one of the best villains of the original animation, then they make a stupid quip and make it an episode about how adults shouldn't be watching things for children. Which I think is the worst thing you could even joke about. Parents should know what their children see. And the very reason people would watch the show is to introduce what they loved to their kids.

The target demographic certainly doesn't hate it, the show is really only hated by people who like the old anime show of it. I don't watch CN much but from the shows I have seen, it's a better show than most of the ones on that channel. (Before you mention one of the very few good CN shows, I didn't say all of them just most.)
I work with autistic preschoolers and one of my kids a few years ago acted like a complete brat, throwing tantrums whenever he didn’t get his way, and being mean to his peers. We spoke to his mom and she told us that he watched “nothing but caillou”, which we thought because he would repeated Caillous lines from the show in a sort of scripted way , even when he tantrum. We literally told her to cut out Caillou, and start disciplining him whenever he misbehaved (she really wasn’t doing that at all) and his behavior improved a lot afterwards.
Because the tv execs are sociopaths that’s why!

It would have been nice if when Cailou had a melt down, his parents actually sat down and talked to him about why he blew up and how he could have reacted differently, and administered a punishment appropriate for his age and the scale of his mistake. If we contrasted with how Cailou thought things would turn out in his imagination with the reality of what actually happened. Instead we just got meltdown after meltdown with zero consequences. I'm convinced AOK's Cailou the Grown Up series is exactly how Cailou ended up.

But I was watching sprout one day and I saw this episode of Caillou where they told me to stay still whenever a bee is near me and they won't sting me, and it actually worked. I feel bad for Rosie Like she's trying to spend time with her brother and play with him. But Caillou is just a brat and keeps on being mean to her.
My Headcanon for Caillou is that he had cancer so his parents let him get away with anything he wanted because he wouldn't live long. The episodes have the haze around them and have the grandma narrator because she's telling back some of Caillou's favorite experiences to him while he's on his deathbed.
They're still terrible parents in that scenario. By indulging their terminally ill child, allowing him to be a brat and bully their other child, they're allowing him to use his disability to treat others poorly.
I wouldn't be surprised if Rosie were to look forward to him dying.

The concept of having a very flawed child that learns lessons over time is a solid idea, but the show really does not handle it well. Caillou rarely gets comeuppance for his constant misbehavior, he never really learns important lessons. Its not even really his own fault, the parents are just way too kind to him...I'm all for caring and loving parenting, but there is definitely such a thing as being too nice.
If anything, Horrid Henry pulled this off more efficiently.

I've got a similar situation going on. Kid's smart beyond his years, but the lack of discipline makes him do things that I'm surprised he isn't bullied into the next dimension for. Especially the way he's being conditioned to treat women due to his role models in that regard. There isn't help for it really, spoiling and not disciplining your kid isn't seen as abuse as it's technically not harming their physical well-being, even though it will once they get old enough for their misguided view of the world to start having consequences.
And therein lies the problem. Cailou has TWO parents who don't seem interested in laying down any rules. (throw a tantrum and you get sent to your room. Complain about dinner, no dessert) No discipline in the home is bad for parents and kids.

Oh dear gawd...I remember my now 21 yr old son watching Caillou when he was four...and him looking at me when Caillou was a BRAT and saying “why isn’t he in the time out chair 🤨? I’d be in time out if I did that”. I was never so proud.
That's why I never watched the show as a kid, I couldn't understand how he was such a brat and got away with it and the show just annoyed me and made me mad. It was the one show where both I and my mother agreed that it was bad so I never watched it unless someone else was.

i am extremely happy my mom banned me from watching this show, because i could've became an absolute brat, who threw tantrums, whenever i didn't get what i want.

To be honest, I used to enjoyed Caillou as a kid and now I understand everyone hates Caillou and why Caillou ends up such an unlikable spoiled brat and failed to be a decent role model that young kids can related to him. That's bad parenting and bad child learning in animated kids show.

A perfect example of Caillou done right is Horrid Henry. In the show, Henry is a bad behaved child, torturing his family and friends, and always getting in trouble. However, unlike Caillou, Henry, in one way or another, gets some kind of Consequence for his actions, thus teaching kids if you acted like Henry, you'd know what would be in store for you.

I've heard many, many accounts of why people hate Caillou. What always aggravated me about these accounts was that they rarely, if ever, mentioned how he NEVER gets in trouble, which is the main reason why I hate the show. Thank you so, SO much for bringing this to attention!
Peppa Pig has a very similar problem to Caillou; almost no discipline given by the parent characters. Caddicarus specifically tore that show a new one for that reason and many others besides.

Great video...in all fairness, it seems like Caillou's behavior not only improved later in the run (aka the "yellow shirt" era), but he also learned from his mistakes, such as the episode where he and Leo make their friend Clementine cry after calling her "stupid", then after Rosie picks up said term, Calliou's mom sets him straight, and he subsequently apologizes to Clementine.
I once read an article about the fact that basically every baby and toddler is a narcissist. In the first years of a kids life they just are aware of their own needs and emotions. They throw tantrums because they cant understand when their needs and emotions are not met. This first years is when they learn the concept of things consequences of action (touching a hot plate hurts for example), empathy and other social skills. They learn that not only their needs and emotions exist, but that others have the same feelings too, and that they can influence other peoples feelings (making them happy with giving them a hug etc.). So parenting basically means to train their kids NOT to be narcissists, which is kinda the default setting for toddlers. By not raising your kid, and setting boundaries or praising good social behavior you are basically allowing your kid to stay a narcissist, so they will eventually fail to understand why life around them doesn't work the way it did then they where little. So they have to gradually learn from their surroundings and hope to cope some day. Furthermore enabling a toddlers negative behavior like seen in the show will very likely actively make them narcissist as adults. So yeah, that kid is gonna be a serial killer lol.

Shoes that DON'T EVEN HAVE FUCKING LACES. How did he turn off the power? He used the circuit breaker. Yhen there's the time he broke Greg's console by putting a cookie inside it, and he uses his age as an excuse, saying "I'm onwy thwee". It's even said that Manny breaks Greg's stuff ALL THE TIME.

Legends say that there was a sequel series to Caillou made right around the same time as the actual original series. Yes, but Caillou is just an average little kid. Manny is shown to be smart and cunning for a 3/4-year old and is arguably a lot worse than Calliou is. At least Caillou doesn't misbehave in every single episode (even in seasons 1-2). Hell, he even tries to redeem himself on very rare occasions. He whines and complains quite a bit and his parents don't really do much about it most of the time. They're good and well-meaning parents, they're just way too lax with discipline and structure. I'm not saying "go whip your kid when he talks back", I just wish for them to at least teach their son (and daughter to a lesser extent) a lesson and then move on with their day. I'm not a parent and I don't fully understand how parenting small children works, but hey, at least I tried my best. Still, I find Caillou to be a bad influence for kids because they might copy some of his whining and tantrums.
Now back to Manny. OK, Manny is arguably worse than Caillou is in terms of behavior. Remember that time in "Cabin Fever" where he purposefully locked Greg's Net Kritterz account and deprived the entire Heffley family of heat and warmth because no one taught him how to tie his shoes? How about in "The Getaway" where he ruined the football game in favor of his favorite TV show? Or when he made imaginary friends just so he could get out of trouble and earn more treats? That boy knows exactly what he's doing; he's not your average little kid.
