I made a documentary on PopCap itself if anyone's interested. I tried to take as much of the criticism as I could so there's no overextending or straying too far from the topic displayed in the title, as a lot of people have been having grievances with the fact that this retrospective video goes over the full story. Check it out if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/dPZfvkuZ0AY/видео.html CORRECTIONS: PopCap were *technically* the ones who had complete control over whether or not to add microtransactions in PvZ 2. EA just published the second game while giving PopCap a massive incentive to make a lot of profit, causing them to descend to greedy methods. Something I had also forgotten to include was the input of George Fan. He was the one who implemented a lot of character into the first game, and his lack of involvement for the second game could be a possible reason for why the game has a different (not necessarily worse) feel.
I still play Garden Warfare 2, the graphics still hold up very well, maybe even better than some current games. There's also so much variety in characters that it can keep you busy constantly. Still very unique and fun. The game just has problems with the amount of players is all, I usually end up matching with the same people.
Everytime I would play PVZ as a kid It would freak me out hearing the zombies. I was too scared to play it sometimes. What scared me the most was when the zombie’s would enter your house. Hearing the “NO” scream haunted me as a kid.
Man Garden Warfare 1 and 2 were one of the biggest games of my childhood. The story and interactive world in GW2 was addicting me. I just wanted to adventuee and collect all the secrets. Truly two gems, but i dont wanna talk about battle for neighborville. Some nice ideas but the execution rough
I think the reason Garden Warfare was well recieved was that, despite the feel changing massively, it was still a "tower defense" game in spirit. It's jsut that now, you control the towers instead of a omnipotent builder. This especially applies once you start strategizing in the game. That could be a reason why Garden Warfare was well recieved, but Heroes is forgotten.
The original Plants vs Zombies game got me through so many hours of waiting on my car getting serviced, DMV, hospital waits, and everything in between. I'd have to say it's one of my favorite games of all time.
It’s not dead. They just took the franchise in a (unwanted) different direction which made the fans stop caring about the new entries. That doesn’t mean that the other games don’t have players, in fact there are new players in almost every lobby (even gw1) (on xbox, sorry for the confusion) Edit: grammar (thanks to @Flanigmo) and the bit at the end
Dude the first PvZ game got me through all sorts of tough times. During my childhood I was in and out of the hospital and all I can remember is playing PvZ on my dad's phone.
Your video is still accurate if you remove the EA part, though I imagine they still played a role in some elements in the games. I agree eitherway. I used to think PVZ was a franchise known for not having a bad game, I enjoyed all the games, until 2019 came around with BFN and PVZ3. Ironically, I think Popcap didn't do enough for the franchise and separated their fanbase too much. Consoles and PC were part of the original success, there is nothing wrong with the Garden Warfare games, but for tower defense fans, they were left in the dust. To this day, there's still not a traditional tower defense pvz game for these platforms. Hell PVZ1 isn't even available for modern console platforms, except xbox backward compatibility. Merchandises of the franchise also declined immediately, for a game that has a similar appeal to Pokemon- Popcap never took advantage of it; you can only buy chinese bootlegs of the characters. Plants and zombies are perfect for marketable plushes, they could've had a good source of revenue with this and establish more of a stronger connection to younger audiences collecting them. There's so much Popcap could've done but I think being slow and failing to take advantage of things (except microtransactions lol) is what left them in this position. For fans of the franchise, there's little for them to stay around for because of how slow popcap been for the past years. That's probably because Popcap has so many restructures in the past year.
PvZ 1 was the first PvZ game I played but I have always loved PvZ 2 more, even after controversial updates. I love the extra content to do after Adventure Mode. I actually bought a PS4 simply for Garden Warfare 2 and I had no idea what type of game it was. If it wasn't for GW2, I might never have gotten a console. GW2, despite being different, instantly became my favourite game and replaced PvZ 2. I have loved all the PvZ games made, even BFN but I feel that BFN is to blame for many problems. Getting rid of variants made BFN like any other shooter and the overall design for the game was a downgrade. I think that in order to revive my and many others favourite franchise they need to make GW3 and build upon GW2 and listen to player feedback. They also need to make desperate changes to PvZ 3 as right now it is pretty meh and won't be enough to bring back the franchise.
Yeah Popcap could have gone the Rovio route with marketable plushies and merch in general as i think that's what keeped Rovio alive during the 2016-2021 era of angry birds
People often forget PvZ:Heroes exists, but imo it did a great job with its artstyle. It mixes nicely the respective artstyles of both PvZ (cartoonish but weird and a bit gritty) and PvZ2 (softer cartoon), and then adds a dash of super hero comics art to make it its own unique style. And it fits pretty well! The new plants/zombies fit well enough, while the returning ones take cues from either PvZ1, PvZ2, or other sources like PvZ Adventures (the weird facebook game?)
I remember playing PvZ1 and 2 and absolutely loving them! Then I got PvZ Heroes and it wasn’t too bad, it wasn’t really my type of game though. I hope they add more to the PvZ franchise, I love plants verses zombies and so do a lot of people.
@@shanthegamer21 I didn't play a whole lot of other PvZ games outside of the DS version so im pretty biased, but it was always one of my favorite PvZ games xD
I loved that part of the game, yeah you could spend money on packs but I played the game and grinded the coins to get the packs that gave you characters or parts of characters
when it was announced that plants could level up in pvz 2, I was very excited, but later I realized that it was probably the worst thing that could happen to the game, not only because of more microtransactions, but also because it removes more solids as a game and as an initial concept with which it had to end.
The leveling system for me give it a fresh new layer of gameplay. However, leveling up the plants was very grindy. I calculated that it'd take 5 to 6 years to level everything (and this wasn't even including masteries). Somebody else posted online something similar, so I wasn't that far off :\ I played the game for 3.5 years on and off, had A TON of fun with it, but had to delete it out of sheer frustration and disgust.
Upgrade system killed the game. Because when you upgrade basics plants like repeater to 3-4, there is literally no level to not be beaten. It ended in a child game
Yeah, I was excited about that because the Chinese version had level ups since much earlier, and seemed super cool, especially when I liked grinding for gems and pots at the infinite gauntlets, and later worlds were just pretty tough for most plants, but it turned out being another kind of grind altogether in the international version, you didn’t get anything from beating levels, you needed to get seed packets, that were only found as specific rewards or randomized in piñatas, I tried to get my plants upgraded without spending money, but got tired of that very quickly, it sucks how limited it is if you don’t spend a lot
@@ZephyrKit theres literally nothing better than Winter Melon... AOE High damage with frost effect.. I liked the butter corn as its the only combat plant that stuns when you dont have that frost shroom..
Upon release I remember PVZ2 being really bad. It’s gameplay was great, however the levels were atrocious. The map was like a maze, and you had to buy keys to unlock the rest of the levels. I was so happy that it was completely reworked to be linear
To not mention it was painfully difficult by comparison with PVZ1. Now your plants get levels, which give them more damage and perhaps more importantly, sun cost cuts. Back then I remember the game being a TON more frustrating than it is nowadays!
@@anasnaufal3144 Don't get your hopes up too much. The leveling system is atrocious, and some challenges REQUIRE you to either have high level plants or plants you purchase with cash.
I platinumed all of the PvZ games on PlayStation & my god Battle for Neighborville was such a slog to get through. Really wish we’d get another Garden Warfare.
I remember that once Burger King did this really weird little yellow device that let you play plants vs zombie in a very dumbed down version with pea shooters only. It was kinda cool.
Honestly I don't care who hates it and stuff, I just know that it's one of the best games (yes, nostalgia definitely got contribution) I've ever played. I played it uncountable times with my sister as a kid and the memories hit hard. Used to play it with dad as well. The soundtrack is gold too
I do have alot of nostalgia for the first game, but i recently played the second aswell as gw2, and they were not actually that bad. While the second game does require you to spend $150+ to unlock everything, it still has enough content to be fun. And as gw2 does have paid stuff, its only for cosmetics and plant variants. The plant variants do change some things about how the plant works, you can still play the plant. Plus, you get a good amount of coins for doing things.
@@trollsansofficial There should be a time stamp for the part where we finally learn that Torchwood can remove fog after 306225326435 years of playing the game
Something important about the first game: You’re constantly unlocking plants which either solve a problem which has just been introduced, or make it easier. You get potato mines to deal with Pole Vaulters, and then afterwards are rewarded with the Snow Pea as an easier method of killing them. You get the Fume Shroom telling you it can go thru screen doors, and immediately are faced with screen doors. After you struggle to kill miners with starfruit, you’re given the more effective Split Pea. I could go on with literally every time you get a plant. Yes, some plants are more useful than others, but every time you get a plant, it’s helpful for the very next level
Absolutely. PvZ 1 has at least 1 or 2 plants that can foil each special type of zombie, thus allowing for options. Another example would be blover replacing either cactus or plantern. Although you have it backwards about starfruit since you actually unlock it after split pea.
You got that backwards, after struggling to beat miners with split pea, you get the more effective starfruit. Anyways there are some cases where you get a zombie that counters the plant you got instead. Pumpkin is obtained right before you face the pogo stick zombie, against which the pumpkin is utterly useless.
Pvz 2 also doing it, you will get fume shroom to counter jester, magnet shroom to counter king, perfume shroom to counter dinos, citron to counter robo-cone, etc. But yes, pvz gw, pvz gw 2, pvz heroes and other games that comed after pvz 2 (including pvz 3), does not doing it.
It feels very disingenuous to me to say that EA had no role in the downfall of PVZ. In addition to George Fan being laid off due to visionary differences, there are also two interviews (can’t link in the comments of course) that suggest EA played a heavy role. One employee said that the CEO of EA at the time brought up the idea of “rentable plants” because of a suggestion from his child, and another employee said that they suggested making two different PVZ games, one closer to the spirit of the original and the other with more monetization. That employees idea was disregarded, and they were taken off the PVZ2 team and later asked to leave the company.
EA not only killed the franchise, they killed all of Pop Cap which was the best casual game studio in the world IMO. PvZ, Peggle, and Zuma were all amazing games casual/arcade games.
@@Weaver_Games EA wouldn’t know good game design if it hit them in the face, of course they don’t appreciate having one of the best studios in the world working for them…
Watching this makes me want to play the first PvZ. I remember how popular it was in high school. We all crowded around whoever was playing it at lunch time.
I think this is one of the better videos talking about pvz and what “killed it” even tho it’s not that dead, but I feel like he should have talked about pvz gw2 and pvz hero’s a little more. I think a video talking about angry birds would be interesting
I can definitely agree that I could have (and should have) gone into more detail about the game design behind all of the games after 2. The issue is that I only give myself one week to make these videos, and that means I have to spend more time on some parts and less time on others. I got bored of writing the script by the second half so I somewhat brushed over the shooters and heroes. I’ve actually never played any of the shooters besides the first one and that definitely shows. It at least explains why I was unable to actually “review” them. So I instead just went over the impact those games had.
Aheenghaaa!! I love angry birds toons and the random crossover/genre swap games...sadly they stopped support but they treat the newer in my oppinion worse games like thier favorite child
It makes sense for Plants vs Zombies to die, only half of the game was alive to begin with (joke) But in all seriousness, the game has a reachable limit in which it will become boring. You just keep playing with 10 million coins and try breaking your previous high scores. *It's already impressive how long its popularity has lasted.*
I love the 3d shooter versions of this game but when battle for neighborville was released the only problem I saw with it was that there were not different versions of the characters like ice, fire, camo etc
In the almanac, it says that zomboss is trying to conquer his local place of smh. Moreover, we can see chinese zombies in the bottom of the achievement section. So it shows that there are more and different zombie groups and bosses all around the world. I think it would be fun to have a game that we can travel the world with our seeds and save people from zombies. We could find new seeds too. We would learn more and more about how Zombies first appeared and who's responsible for that and the last boss would be the one who created zombies. Yes, most of the fan theories says that Dave and Zomboss have a big role in that but what if they wouldn't? What if the one who created bloom and doom co. is someone different than we thought?
This would be awesome. Oh wait… it’s run by EA. Jokes aside, it’s a good idea in my opinion. Just sucks that it’ll never happen since pvz2 needs to die
@@puro9284pvz 3 as a sequel has failed, as we've seen from their initial launch. It was so awful they cancelled the entire project not long after. I don't suppose Popcap is caring much about pvz 2 at this point, just milking whatever's left and nothing else at the end.
I'll be honest that when I played PVZ2 back in 2013, I just fell that the magic that made the first game so special (I played the hell out of it on X360 and DS) was gone. Granted, this was around the time I began middle school, which was also when I realized that everything just didn't feel _right_ like it used to.
I actually loved PVZ2 and back when it came out I played the hell out of that game. Each world felt like a new experience and where quite fun to explore. (Except beach day, I still got PTSD from how GOD DAMN HARD IT WAS) and the bosses offered good chalenge. Sure the increased variety of plants meant that some where uterly useless, like the peashooter but I didn’t realy cared that mutch about it. Also removing the purple lants was ofr me an upgrade because I hated that system. You wree alreday extremelly restricted by the a,ount of plant you could take in any given match, and they serevd to further restricted your ‘deck’ and their ice age long cool down was enougth to earn my scorn. So I would say good ridence. The only real downside is that I was almost required to pass by the pirate world in order to get the dragon mouth (back then it was one of the most broken plant in the game) as it single handedly made game so much easier. I stoped playing it for a while (I got bored like I always do) and tried to return to the game at one point. And by that time paid plants and mastery level had showed their ugly heads. Man I miss the older game, defenitly not what it used to be.
PVZ2 was great gameplay-wise, I finished it a few years ago for the first time and I still don't get why wasn't it released to other platforms. Back when it was released you could only play it properly on expensive tablets, which killed my hype instantly because i wanted to play it on pc.
I still play the original garden warfare, one issue I’ve seen in recent times is everybody only plays gardens and graveyards because of the amount of coins you can get from it (10,000 average as apposed to 7,000 average) if you want to play any other modes you have play mixed because that still has players
Garden Warfare and GW 2 were amazing. I spent hundreds of hours playing those with my brother since both had split screen. GW was probably one of the best multiplayer games on the ps3.
The release of Garden Warfare 1 was probably the absolute peak of this franchise. It's been almost 10 years since 2014 and I STILL find full g&g lobbies throughout the day. Testament to how great of a game it is.
PvZ definitely played a role as an inspiration for the game design of Arknights. One of the events in Arknights pays homage to PvZ in one of its stages (DH-EX-4) which looks exactly like the the pool stage.
I would say, pvz played a role in the inspiration of the td industry as a whole, making other dev's give it homage too. besides, arknights has other homages to other games as well, long before even DH came out. It just really fit the event. especially since the new debut character for then, Chalter, has that 3x2 tile range, similar to some plants in the pvz franchise, especially close to snapdragon from 2... and y'know... she is a dragon :)
3:45 that game mode was still the most traumatic experience I ever got when I started playing it, imagine a swamp zombie just popping up out of nowhere and you never realized you just lost.
I to this day wonder why Dave was placing his mold colonies in our yard in the second game. I never thought of it till sometime this year lol. Also I always found Zomboss's note rather chilling the first time I saw it when playing the ds version, so I think it was a nice introduction to his character as definitely being different from the other zombies, that difference being what gives him the grasp over his underlings.
I play PVZ BFN pretty often and I absolutely love how ridiculous the character pieces are. It's a great incentive for me, personally. Knowing that my ridiculous looking chomper shows up on screen when I annihilate some one in team vanquish brings me great joy.
The main issue I have with PVZ 2 Compared to 1 is the pacing was absolutely terrible in 2 compared to 1. And I have played through BOTH of these Games PVZ 1 had a nice formulaic progression through 5 worlds before you beaten the main story, then you had the extra content to do which is all optional but required if you want to beat everything that changes up the gameplay from 1 to 100 at times, and its put in such a nice package where you can pick up and play these mods whenever you feel like it. The only thing I wished is that Some of the minigames were treated the same as Vasebreaker and I Zombie, instead of Exclusive to minigame. Stuff like Zombotany, Portal Combat BeGowled, Walnut Bowling. And I wish there were endless Survival of the other 4 Worlds other then the Beach World. It was a nice time playing although compared to 2. it was on the short side for major content. PVZ 2 on the other hand I feel fell from grace hard. At the start of the game it was planned to be an evolving series where the game would add more content as time went on which isn't bad at first. and for a start it looked really promising. with Ancient Egypt, Pirate Sea's, Wild West & Far Future having really good balancing both in Levels. Plant Placement Mechanics and Ideas. and if anyone would say PVZ 2 is better for these 4 worlds then I would agree with them. However then the Dark Ages came out and while I like the idea of world and its gimmicks. its also a bit too short of a world which makes sense for there's to be only 5 plants to obtain. However, then for every other world. they would have 5 plants to unlock (Neon Mixtape Tour has 6) for a 32 Level Worlds. It got stail very quickly, not to mention the actual worlds themselves having insanely bad pacing throughout in the levels. I think PVZ 2 failed at realizing what mechanics were added into the game when making these worlds. because on the chance the player plays in chronological order. They would get a good feel for the overarching gameplay. However the problem is with how the game originally handled worlds. and that is with after Level 1-16, you would get a Key. this Key lets you unlock one of the worlds for players to play on and you can choose any world to play on and in any order you like. all you would have to do is get through to the half way mark in these worlds and get another key. theres a lot of customizability to work with here, so you shouldn't have worlds that drag on for so fucking long without anything new with the game like the other worlds I just mentioned. this would essentially force the players to play in a certain order because I think most people would want to play a 25 Level world where you unlock 7 new plants for free. then to play a 32 level world where you unlock 5 free plants. and then the change to the Keys made things worse imo. Now after 1-16 you get all the keys for every single area. and while this initially sounds nice. the problem is now players would feel like tip toeing around the game in order to select what plants they want, taking a lot of the challenge out. not to mention Microtransactions which weren't that bad for the first 4 worlds. past then it went from pretentious to fucking unreal. The new Minigames weren't as creative this time around. the Old minigames weren't elevated much at all. Survival was better but I would consider it something different then survival because it plays more focused on a rougelike more then evolution. Arena was a complete nightmare, The Seed packets were the definition of a joke. The only reason this game isn't dead is the creators KEEP, ADDING, MORE, PLANTS.... like seriously WHAT THE FUCK. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY!?!?!?!?!?!!?!. If you're going to make this many Plants fort Seed Packets. Maybe Make some extra fucking worlds maybe. because something like this does not keep a game alive. it kills the game in more ways then 1. and they don't even have the same fucking art style. they make wayyyy to many unnecessary updates to PVZ 2 where Heroes has More to offer at this point and the game was completely abandoned after the Triassic update (which honestly could have just been combined into 1 update and have both Evolving and Dino Roar Mechanics thrown in) The Power Ups feel more like a Band-Aid, rather then fixing the balancing of the gameplay What in the fuck are the Mints The CHINESE Version of PVZ2 was an overall better experience The Ads. (And no. turning on airplane mode doesn't change the fact the adds exist in the first place. equally important to note why you need wifi on a phone to begin with.) Theres a lot more I could go into but this is the gripes I have, not everything is bad. like I think having Gemium plants are a good thing to the game where you can buy them at any time. I just wished you couldn't buy Gems so you would actually have to work for them and that to compensate for this. the prices would be a bit cheaper The Zen Garden had a better purpose inside of this game The First 5 Worlds are generally pretty good But going past there. Theres not a whole lot that PVZ 2 actually did that aged well compared to the first game. and called people Nostalgia-Blind is showing you have no actual argument against someones claim. However if I had to choose, I would prefer playing PVZ 2 then PVZ 3 anyday
The first iteration of pvz2 was actually way less predatory. I had a lot of fun with it, until it completely leaned into the microtransactions completely.
i mean, you can still play it without anyicrotransactions, i recently started playing, refusing to level up plants and it has been a smooth sail, im on far future day 20 for now.
WHERE ARE THE MIDBOSS STATUES?! WHY ARE THERE SO MANY PLANTS THAT DO THE SAME THING?! WHY ARE FREE GEMS 💎 NOW USED TO PROMOTE SHADY ASS WEBSITES?! WHERE IS THE MUSIC!? 😭😭😭😭😭
I remember being in the hospital and going to the computer room to play plants vs. zombies when I could. Still remember that room and view outside the windows.
no, it genuinely was popcap. ea isn't responsible for microtransactions, popcap planned it from the very beginning and multiple former popcap devs (INCLUDING BOTH JOHN VECHEY, ONE OF THE CO-FOUNDERS OF POPCAP, AND GEORGE FAN) confirmed this. if i linked the google doc with a bunch of quotes disproving the ea claims, youtube would auto-hide my comment, but if you do want to see it, please lmk and i can send it over discord or something. if anything, ea boosted the franchise and we wouldn't have had most pvz games without them also, for ads, literally just turn off the wifi. i'm not going to defend modern pvz2 but 2016 pvz2 (when modern day came out but before leveling and all of the scummy stuff) is leagues better than pvz1 imo
I really want to emphasize how great the Garden Warfare franchise was until Battle for Neighborville 'cause I'm pretty sure it formed part of a lot of our childhoods. The first Garden Warfare was, for me, the first ever shooter I ever got to play in console and ultimately made me fall in love with that Plants vs Zombies was as a whole. My parents were extremely restrictive with the content I consumed as a child and forced me to play games only according to my age, and Garden Warfare was the closest thing I got from a shooter like Call of Duty or Halo, for example. Garden Warfare remained somewhat friendly for my age, and I remember making a lot of friends back then and even use the public voice chat just to have fun and it was AWESOME. It was very addictive, there were so many gamemodes, and the maps felt dynamic each time, either as a plant or as a zombie. I really didn't care too much about customisation, but the diversity from plants and zombies was for me the cherry on top. I have so many fond memories with the game that I would even consider play my PS3 once again only to play Garden Warfare for nostalgia. For Garden Warfare 2... that's when I felt the game fell flat. Way too many plants, matches fell over saturated, mechanics shifted a lot, if not entirely, and all the maps really didn't click with me. The first game was so simple yet so compelling, keeping you hooked even after hours of playing and the simplicity from its formula made it enjoyable for a younger audience, but as for the sequel, it felt a bit TOO much for me as a kid, and since haven't given it a chance to try it. Nonetheless, it was a huge success and took a very important part on the boom the franchise had on the modern console era. Seriously, if you haven't played Garden Warfare, play it or look up some videos about it on RUclips. It was very fun and was a very crucial part for me on my gaming experience and would recommend it to anyone. Thank you for the deep insight on the video for the rest of the games!
One of the reasons neighborville wasnt popular is cuz it removed variants and was not different from gw I think everybody was expecting alot more but imo its still a decent game
Gw 1 was a good game for me cuz I’ve been playing the franchise since the first game came out and I was excited that there’s a 3rd person game for it and it was really fun, so was gw2 it was fun aswell with the new zombies, plants and everything and people still play it as of right now. For bfn it’s alright I didn’t knew they came out with another one I wasn’t really caught up but it’s a alright game Ik there wasn’t a lot on bfn but I gave it a try. I hope they can focused on more of these games
i understand what you mean about gw1. it was also my childhood. the nostalgia plus it being a great game is what i love about it. between april-may got into the gw series again. went from me going from gw2 to gw1. gw2 is too overwhelming and campy but is still a great game because you have more options. gw1 is just great! it's just the lobby's with no one in them which is sad to see.
I agree with everything here. Even the fact that I couldn't play most fps games (like halo or cod) so I played pvz gw1 a ton. Then when gw2 was released, I ended up playing that even more with friends and still do since that game made it more appealing to me and my friends for the new playable characters and most other things it added. Even to this day we do fights in backyard battleground, but bfn just sucked I played it q couple of times on switch and pc but yeah completely lost its charm.
@@H3ATHYJ i don't know what they were trying to do with bfn. it seems that it's more of a dumbed down version of the garden warfare series for kids. it's sad because i feel with the downfall of bfn, EA might not approve a gw3 (if there was any plans for it)
for someone who enjoyed playing the original pvz on mobile when it came, to enjoying the garden warfare games, i hope they make a pvz remaster or even a polished pvz gw game again, i truly believe it was the most fun i had playing a pvp game in a while during those times
I think what killed the game was that EA regarded the group of players that played the first PVZ as a collective group of gamers overlooking the exclusive groups that exist within the group. Making the sequel a mobile game only alienated the PC and Console players. I played the first game on PC then was forced to switch to mobile for the sequel. I had to improvise and force the game to run on a PC. The sequel was great and better than the first one content wise, but the whole idea of playing a mobile game on my PC was too much to ignore and the magic was lost. Only went as far as PVZ2.
Tbh plant vs Zombies will always have a special place in my heart, I remember playing CO OP mode with my cousin in pvz 1 and it was so much fun, it really has changed so much and when I got pvz neighborvill (whatever it’s called) it really made me sad that it wasn’t the same as the first pvz gw
I kinda feel like the first game did everything this simple concept had to offer. Some gamea aren't ment to be like Call of Duty or Genshin Impact with all the hype and success. Some games are good as they are and get a little lucky with a balance of virality and well made, simple gameplay. Sometimes things are better left alone, a concept that's sorely lacking in 2020's.
I think you’re correct bc the originals simplicity is what made it so special and it was lost in the sequel. Like if pvz2 was scaled down in content and scope then I’d be a lot better
The nostalgia from this video bro... I remember playing PvZ and PvZ2 a few years back and it was pretty entertaining until i stopped due to the P2W plants and like you said the levels get repeative so i cant really find the fun and just decided that it was time to let go of the PvZ series
I remember when pvz2 first released and it was perfect to me but the years of popcap adding more ads, premium plants, changing the order of the worlds, and removing the music and the fun minigames left it a soulless shadow of what once was a great game.
Its better lmao, nothing i remember got removed, only some things slightly changed. You can play the whole game without microtransactions or leveling plants, leveling is there for the arena and Penny's pursuit which can be totally ignored. And there are more worlds and plants now more content = better
@@Narko_Marko they removed the old keys system, now progression is completely linear Stuff like arena and seediums were made more grindy since now it takes more crowns to unlock the monthly plant (from 400 to 500) THEY REMOVED THE YETI
@@harryvpn1462 noooooo the Yeti :( I think that new progression is better since you cant get op plants while still in anicent egypt, but i miss the harder levels after zomboss battle, ive seen someone play them from the event menu or something, is that possible or did i just see a mod?
@@Narko_Marko a lot of mods enable them back, but now once you beat the game, every 2 weeks they appear in your quest log for you to complete Also, travelling to other worlds to get more plants to help you in your current world was a big fun factor of the game for me
I know it's never going to happen, but I want a Plants vs. Zombies Trilogy Bundle for modern systems (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and mobile). It would come with a 'Definitive Edition' of PvZ1, with all the achievements and minigames from the mobile version + Versus mode from consoles, a PvZ2 Definitive Edition adapted for PC and consoles with no ads and premium plants being completely free + the two China-exclusive worlds being available for all regions, and finally PvZ3 when it eventually releases fully. That would be a great way to "revive" the franchise and alienate new and old players, but of course EA doesn't care about all of that so they'll continue to be as scummy as they are now.
There are 5-6 exclusive worlds in PVZ2C, and they can't use them because of a mandate (also they have many bugs and glitches) Also, how will they handle DS/DSi exclusive content from PVZ 1
tbh i had a good experience playing pvz battle for neighborville, especially the mushroom ninja character was great and the many puzzles/secrets in the golden gnome hunt
For me PvZ2 is still one of my favorite. Yea it has its own problems but the boss battles in this are amazing. One of my favorites is probably from Neon Mixtape Tour as that whole world is pretty unique with its whole music mechanic. Also it sucks that Battle For Neighborville is the only PvZ shooter to come to switch. I recall watching some gameplay for Garden Warfare 2 and it looked so fun but I don’t have an Xbox, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t typically play shooter games
Kinda sad that it ended up like this, especially with PVZ2 effectively just becoming a game with very little other content to do besides grinding for seeds or going through the Penny's Pursuits attempting to win with very little post game material outside of those and a seedium plant. This game has a place in my heart even if I reluctantly tolerated its boring new content for a few years and me getting Origin solely for PvZ and Insaniquarium (which I greatly regret now). China's a bit better at new content if it weren't for the fact they literally can't code at all.
Unpopular Option, but I think PvZ Heroes was one of the best games in the series, as it had a lot of really fun elements and variety. I still play it to this day and rarely ever find myself not having fun with it.
Same, been watching a dude who made his channel of of GW 1 and 2. He beat the first game is onto the second. Every time I have the urge to tap the damn sun.
15:05 Honestly, PvZ Heroes isn't half bad. While it's heavily lenient on pay-to-win. You do get regular packs if your participate in the tournaments. It's kinda fun and I had a phase with it where I would play the events daily to get the week's event plant. It can be quite the dopamine factory when you can set up a ridiculous combo with your cards.
GW 1 and 2 were so good. Definitely my favorite shooters of all time. I played a good amount of B4N but it just wasn't the same. PvZ 1 was also my favorite tower defense game, and I couldn't really get too far into 2 bc of the microtransactions and it being mobile. So pretty much everything you're saying here lines up for me
There’s one part of misinformation in this video, you CAN remove ads from pvz 2. Making any purchase into the game completely removes forced ads from you
I think what killed the franchise was how they dragged the series through to many games and made it to repetitive. What they do is they release a new game, but instead of having new features, well it may have at least a couple features but not a lot, you get bored of it and go off the game. What this game needs is new features and to bring back old features from the older games to the newer games. Because I don’t think that PVZ3 game is lasting very long. (Time until it dies and no one plays it)
I'm 28 and PVZ was a good part of my childhood, however I gotta say something maybe not that liked, especially with nostalgia. PVZ was nice and a ton of fun. Especially without internet it was one of the best games alongside Age of Empires 1&2 and CS 1.6 Portable, however 2 was where I spent a majority of the time. Not that I spent little on PVZ, but I spent so much time on PVZ2. Since I played it so much, I also went through multiple parts of it's history that allowed exploits, meaning I was not really troubled by pay 2 win plants because I managed to obtain them without paying. 1) There were more levels. Yes, they were repetetive, but being a mobile game I wouldn't pull this one out just to play instead of gaming on a pc. Well, okay, eventually I did because it was so much fun, but if you pull it out 2-3 times a day on the train or toilet, you are not really bothered by the levels not giving a big boost. 2) They had a ton of super fun and creative levels you just didn't have in 1. Also some incredibely frustrating and stupid ones, but beating them felt so good. 3) My favorite part: the weekly competition. Now this is where exploits come in. Here you would compete until you lose. I don't remember how it worked, only that you were playing for a streak and then rewarded based on your placement, which was given based on your streak level you reached. You were deemed to fail, but there was a bug in the game that would allow you to continue forever. I sadly don't remember it. In fact, I think I created a Reddit account ONLY for that purpose, let me scroll through it. --> I was wrong, but here are some of my posts: The fights were against bots. Right, now I remember a lot. This might sound bad, but it was actually good. This meant you were also in brackets with a ton of bots and would often end up winning if you figured how to get high streaks, which felt very rewarding. Just imagine thousands of player competing for a top 10 reward. Regardless, reading on it you had to pay gems and I remember the bug involved not paying gems or rather earning more than you had to spend. The bug involved going infinite and while you only earned a few of them (I think like 1 or 5 every x rounds) this would mean you had infinite attempts. 5) My main issue was ads not showing up. Believe it or not, that was a post I made on Reddit and I do roughly remember it. Ads were integral to play more and they wouldn't load for me.
I saw this game on an internet ad back when pvz1 had just sprung up on pc. I garbed my grandpas laptop being I was there at the time, and took my first search. That night sat playing till the dawn and never even made it to the pool area due to game development not being completed up to that point. I could be completely wrong but it felt like it could have been a flash game or on flash games. But I just remember the iconic cattails that I was always hyped to get even to this day are my favorite plant to date. (Which sounds weird to say) needless to say this game is extremely fun and is still worth playing, not for the graphics at all but the simplistic game play mechanics. Wow I ramble
Honestly I still love pvz bfnv. It's a great game for me. Granted, I enjoy the turf takeover mode the most. But some of the time based multiplayer modes that change every week can be fun too. I like the games simplicity, true I wish there was more but as a simple shooter it's fun.
12:37 There IS actually a way to get rid of ads. If you buy anything they go away. Still a crummy thing, but if you really want to get rid of them, just buy something for 99 cents.
i actually like pvz heros although it does seem unbalanced sometimes with the zombies having a turn for tricks and cards that are really good for a small cost, but it is fun and tomboy sunflower is best
We have a little bit of Hope with plants vs zombies 3 because they're adding choose your plants to it so we have a chance who knows it could be revived
What I want for plants vs zombies Remastered is the art style from PVZ2, as I love that art style more. It gives more characters to the plants. As well as adding all the different game modes that got left out. This would be a nice direction, and maybe if we are lucky, they’ll have a port for each console, Mobile and pc, while still giving us 10 seed slots in mobile.
this is what Im saying, PvZ2 is a great game because it had the concept of time travelling and you can do so much with it. And yes, the animation of PvZ2 stands out for me
Plants vs Zombies Adventures is probably my favorite of the PvZ franchise besides the original. It was available on Facebook Games on 2013 but was closed on 2014 which sucks cause I actually did love the game as a kid.
As an ongoing PvZ fan, I still love it and it's the best game. Hands down. I've finished many achievements and Adventure 1 and 2. PvZ 2 does not capture the same magic. At all.
PVZ 2 is (no, WAS), an incredible game at launch. New plants, worlds, music, new zombies, difficulty, everything was great. The only problem was microtransactions. And because it was EA, they went in the wrong direction, worsening this already good PVZ part 2. It's kinda sad.
Easter egg: In PVZ 1 theres three cheat codes heres The codes "Future" It gives the zombies future glasses (not all of them) "Mustache" It gives the Zombies mustaches (again not all of them) "Trickedout" it gives the Lawnmowers a different Look (it doesnt work with Pool lawnmowers and Roof lawnmowers)
I made a documentary on PopCap itself if anyone's interested. I tried to take as much of the criticism as I could so there's no overextending or straying too far from the topic displayed in the title, as a lot of people have been having grievances with the fact that this retrospective video goes over the full story. Check it out if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/dPZfvkuZ0AY/видео.html
CORRECTIONS:
PopCap were *technically* the ones who had complete control over whether or not to add microtransactions in PvZ 2.
Oh, alrighty then. This actually makes a lot of sense on why they did this in the first place.

The new plants/zombies fit well enough, while the returning ones take cues from either PvZ1, PvZ2, or other sources like PvZ Adventures (the weird facebook game?)

when it was announced that plants could level up in pvz 2, I was very excited, but later I realized that it was probably the worst thing that could happen to the game, not only because of more microtransactions, but also because it removes more solids as a game and as an initial concept with which it had to end.

18:59 TBH, despite being an official game, it looks like a fan-game.
@@T3rr0r626 i will make a pvz game that is also a persona game and dr zomboss becomes a good guy.
You got that backwards, after struggling to beat miners with split pea, you get the more effective starfruit.
Anyways there are some cases where you get a zombie that counters the plant you got instead. Pumpkin is obtained right before you face the pogo stick zombie, against which the pumpkin is utterly useless.
I honestly want gw2 or gw1 to get a massive update(no pay to wins) that could revive the game and possibly the franchise(and the yeti boss hunt)

The issue is that I only give myself one week to make these videos, and that means I have to spend more time on some parts and less time on others. I got bored of writing the script by the second half so I somewhat brushed over the shooters and heroes. In the almanac, it says that zomboss is trying to conquer his local place of smh. Moreover, we can see chinese zombies in the bottom of the achievement section.
Ah of coz it must be in the middle school right...when things "dont feel right" anymore
Of coz
PVZ2 was great gameplay-wise, I finished it a few years ago for the first time and I still don't get why wasn't it released to other platforms. Back when it was released you could only play it properly on expensive tablets, which killed my hype instantly because i wanted to play it on pc.
Yeah man, I also played PvZ on the Nintendo DS.
I still play the original garden warfare, one issue I’ve seen in recent times is everybody only plays gardens and graveyards because of the amount of coins you can get from it (10,000 average as apposed to 7,000 average) if you want to play any other modes you have play mixed because that still has players
as someone who played pvz for childhood im ashamed to never noticed the different amount of lane in world 1 and 3
Garden Warfare and GW 2 were amazing.
Fellow arknights enjoyer 🤝
I would say, pvz played a role in the inspiration of the td industry as a whole, making other dev's give it homage too. besides, arknights has other homages to other games as well, long before even DH came out. It just really fit the event. especially since the new debut character for then, Chalter, has that 3x2 tile range, similar to some plants in the pvz franchise, especially close to snapdragon from 2... and y'know... she is a dragon :)
Greetings fellow Doctor!

Aside from the gameplay, the sound design for every level is just a masterpiece. Like it fits the visual aspects soo well.💎
3:45 that game mode was still the most traumatic experience I ever got when I started playing it, imagine a swamp zombie just popping up out of nowhere and you never realized you just lost.
PvZ was a big part of my childhood, and I’m sad that they took it in a direction that nobody wanted.
And I have played through BOTH of these Games
PVZ 1 had a nice formulaic progression through 5 worlds before you beaten the main story, then you had the extra content to do which is all optional but required if you want to beat everything that changes up the gameplay from 1 to 100 at times, and its put in such a nice package where you can pick up and play these mods whenever you feel like it.
Arena was a complete nightmare,
The Seed packets were the definition of a joke. Maybe Make some extra fucking worlds maybe. because something like this does not keep a game alive. it kills the game in more ways then 1. and they don't even have the same fucking art style.
they make wayyyy to many unnecessary updates to PVZ 2 where Heroes has More to offer at this point and the game was completely abandoned after the Triassic update (which honestly could have just been combined into 1 update and have both Evolving and Dino Roar Mechanics thrown in)
The Power Ups feel more like a Band-Aid, rather then fixing the balancing of the gameplay
What in the fuck are the Mints
The CHINESE Version of PVZ2 was an overall better experience
The Ads. (And no. turning on airplane mode doesn't change the fact the adds exist in the first place. equally important to note why you need wifi on a phone to begin with.)
Theres a lot more I could go into but this is the gripes I have, not everything is bad. like I think having Gemium plants are a good thing to the game where you can buy them at any time. I just wished you couldn't buy Gems so you would actually have to work for them and that to compensate for this. the prices would be a bit cheaper
The Zen Garden had a better purpose inside of this game
The First 5 Worlds are generally pretty good
But going past there. Theres not a whole lot that PVZ 2 actually did that aged well compared to the first game. and called people Nostalgia-Blind is showing you have no actual argument against someones claim. However if I had to choose, I would prefer playing PVZ 2 then PVZ 3 anyday

no, it genuinely was popcap. ea isn't responsible for microtransactions, popcap planned it from the very beginning and multiple former popcap devs (INCLUDING BOTH JOHN VECHEY, ONE OF THE CO-FOUNDERS OF POPCAP, AND GEORGE FAN) confirmed this. if i linked the google doc with a bunch of quotes disproving the ea claims, youtube would auto-hide my comment, but if you do want to see it, please lmk and i can send it over discord or something. if anything, ea boosted the franchise and we wouldn't have had most pvz games without them
also, for ads, literally just turn off the wifi. i'm not going to defend modern pvz2 but 2016 pvz2 (when modern day came out but before leveling and all of the scummy stuff) is leagues better than pvz1 imo

3:42 agh! stop reminding me of that...thing
It's painful. I know
I really want to emphasize how great the Garden Warfare franchise was until Battle for Neighborville 'cause I'm pretty sure it formed part of a lot of our childhoods.
@@H3ATHYJ i don't know what they were trying to do with bfn. it seems that it's more of a dumbed down version of the garden warfare series for kids. it's sad because i feel with the downfall of bfn, EA might not approve a gw3 (if there was any plans for it)
I got the flying gorrila ad while watching this video and was the first time i got happy i got an ad. Great vid tho
I believe the worst offensive in the series was locking certain plants from the first game behind a paywall on PvZ2
Honestly, they should've just made everything locked behind a paywall achievable in one or another way without making it pay to win
As someone who only played both original games on mobile and garden warfare 2 on console this is really interesting to watch and learn, nice video 👍

for someone who enjoyed playing the original pvz on mobile when it came, to enjoying the garden warfare games, i hope they make a pvz remaster or even a polished pvz gw game again, i truly believe it was the most fun i had playing a pvp game in a while during those times

Keep dreaming. No single true thing spoken.
@@nithraliabrawlstars6541 I'm making a pvz game

And there are more worlds and plants now

@@Narko_Marko a lot of mods enable them back, but now once you beat the game, every 2 weeks they appear in your quest log for you to complete
Also, travelling to other worlds to get more plants to help you in your current world was a big fun factor of the game for me
I know it's never going to happen, but I want a Plants vs.
There are 5-6 exclusive worlds in PVZ2C, and they can't use them because of a mandate (also they have many bugs and glitches)
Also, how will they handle DS/DSi exclusive content from PVZ 1
funny enough, PvZ is on Xbox, so that's one good thing
Maybe ur going a bit too far with mobile
Sir, you are living in the perfect world, come back to reality where everything sucks and EA is stabbing pvz constantly and killing it slowly
@@DamageMaximo Well, actually EA just published it, PopCap is the one who has and always had full control over PvZ
tbh i had a good experience playing pvz battle for neighborville, especially the mushroom ninja character was great and the many puzzles/secrets in the golden gnome hunt
The original PvZ was amazing. What made it a true classic is the music. Definitely made it the best mobile game of all time imo :)
What if Pop Cap added a garage level to the original game? This level would require plant pots; sometimes Dave's car blocks some lanes. W or L
Unpopular Option, but I think PvZ Heroes was one of the best games in the series, as it had a lot of really fun elements and variety. I still play it to this day and rarely ever find myself not having fun with it.

--> I was wrong, but here are some of my posts:
The fights were against bots.
Winter Melon canonically has anxiety, and that's honestly really relatable.
3:33 thats called "Bungee Blitz", a hidden minigame, which is the only canceled minigame to be in the game

I like the games simplicity, true I wish there was more but as a simple shooter it's fun.

this is what Im saying, PvZ2 is a great game because it had the concept of time travelling and you can do so much with it. And yes, the animation of PvZ2 stands out for me
@@pyrokatarina i love the pvz 2 graphics too, the plants are adorable and animations are polished and smooth
At all.
I agree and for me the reason is obvious: the original music is gone after the original version. The lack of that music ruins everything.
@@vikramparmar8093 The music in PVZ2 is hit or miss. Far Future slaps, but some of the later worlds are kinda ass.
