    wow dude! you've pretty much nailed most of the checkmarks that made the old style so iconic!
    things I noticed:
    - less flanderization/ slap-stick style of animation
    - spongebob's compressed head shape
    - eugene krab's thin eye sockets
    - no exaggerated gross ups
    but there's also things that I'd like to point out next time you make more spongebob animations! including:
    - bubble transition
    - more cartoon sfx (blinking noise)
    - bubbles floating out of things (cuthulu book)
    - balanced color grading (it looks a bit red)

      @BlackBlood74 День назад +11

      I was also impressed. I'd say the book ghost looks a little more modern too. The animation style, I feel, would have leaned more toward a ghost with a trailing tail vs the bubbly one. Also, there are some more spooky ghosty sounds the original spongebob used. I think in the episodes with the flying dutchman.

    It's so difficult to define what the magic is in old animation, and the version you made. Don't know if its the nostalgia, or the fact that you can sense that the assets are physical. As much great modern animation there is out there, I always feel like it's missing that extra something that bleeds it all together. Really inspiring work you've done here

      Good point. There is something missing in all digital. There is some feeling when i touch real canvas. I just cant draw digitaly. Its nice and all. But its nice to discover how far you can push some techniques!
      Also. Digital is not an item. Its not real. Its digital pixels. Ones and zeros. And even if you print anything, its always different depending on what printer, what ink, what paper. But created physical art, is a real item! That can be digitized. But its already, a thing!!!

    • @jacobhargiss3839
      @jacobhargiss3839 5 дней назад +47

      I can sum up that missing element in 1 word. "Subtlety". With the modern animation, the little imperfections are lost, everything is cranked to 100, all of the colors are vibrant all of the time. In the older animation, the expressions are neutral, the backgrounds are often neutral, the line work is softer, etc, etc, etc. Its like the difference between having a normal conversation and talking to a drug addict.

    • @justinaudiovision
      @justinaudiovision 5 дней назад +9

      So true! Very much like with movies shot on film; theres something about the imperfections and limitations of a physical medium. Especially when watching a movie in a theatre that still projects 35mm/70mm film. It's like your looking through a window into the very moment when the picture was captured, embodying all of the imperfections and wear that the reel of film has sustained over years of use.
      To some extent, overly sterile and clean digital animation falls into a similar category as AI art for me. It feels dehumanised, devoid of imperfection.

    This perfectly captures the old spongebob I loved so much. It had that bit of groundness with how you'd think people would react if all this absurd stuff was considered normal but the general plot from an outsiders in perspective is just absolute chaos. It took itself seriously enough, but not too seriously to where they could just pull random things out of nowhere and act like NOTHING AT ALL was weird.

    I think what's understated here is, in my opinion, how well everybody absolutely nailed specifically the Season 1 feeling. Even down to Mr. Krabs just walking into the kitchen more lowkey feels so specific to Season 1

    This was beautifully done! One thing I notice about authentic-looking "simulated cel animation" is that they include the "xerox lines" thay appear behind painted cels that don't lay flush against the background during the photography process. It's that little natural drop-shadow thay occasionally shows up in old cartoons.
    It's interesting to note that much of what we think of as "authentic" in this case are actually the subtle imperfections that were left behind during the editing process.

    This is the most impressive recreation of Season 1's animation I've ever seen.
    The clever idea of using digital lineart as a reference for the cel animation is astonishing to me.
    Absolutely stunning.

    IM SPEECHLESS
    The video has a great pace, you manage to give some information on how animation is made vs how it used to be made, you got some amazing artist to work on the proyect and the final result is very very very spot on. Congrats dude this is pure gold

    That's incredible! I especially liked the use of a greenscreened person, I always love when spongebob would completely break the animation format for a quick joke, and that one works wonderfully. I think the only thing that could improve it is adding a very slight blur that can be seen in old spongebob, I'm not sure what caused it, but old spongebob never quite felt entirely in focus.
